Dr. Karen Herbst properly diagnosed (with palpitation) my late partner who had Dercum‘s Disease after we found her (at the time, in San Diego) because my partner was misdiagnosed by multiple doctors in two different Oregon cities; a neurologist (Dr. Bell at St. Charles in Bend, OR) alleged she had ‘Blue Mood’ (depression from being diagnosed, and operated for breast cancer); that it was all ‘in her head’, and another (@OHSU in Portland) alleged fatty liver disease (claiming she had more fatty tissue around her liver than anyone he had ever seen before, but that it was simply her “new normal”). The diagnosis was a bittersweet relief, but it was nice that Dr. Herbert confirmed what we felt we already knew, when no one else would listen.

I have only recently realized that have had lipedema since puberty. None of the Dr.'s ever addressed it even when all the signs were in plain view, and complaints were voiced. I have never been obese, and always reasonably fit. Yet, when I repeatedly complained about, and even showed photographs of my incredibly swollen ankles and feet, along with the fat folds in my knees that never went away even when I was emaciated (weighing 94 lbs), I was dismissed by my PCP as being "dramatic." Recently, I was diagnosed with lipedematous alopecia. Even with this diagnosis, nobody connected the dots. I am 66 years old, and thanks to this information, I finally put the diagnostic puzzle together.

The very few doctors who even diagnose and treat Lipedema with her level of expertise have LONG waitlists. We need more competent, trained clinicians!

Everything was meatballs, nerves almost completely severed, muscles, etc. My lymph nodes were completely destroyed. I have had lymphedems, lipedema since that time. I was not told about it at the time that I was aware of. I died 2 times. I have increased fat accumulation since that time. All records have been destroyed. 😢 I have lived this way over 20 years.

That’s fine and all but so many of us are in advanced stages and not even able to walk, after being told with disdain all our lives to just lose weight. Or accusing us of lying about our caloric intakes, logs, charts of our eating we showed. Well, many of us did lose weight on lowcarb/keto/paleo… and the disease persisted. It worsens terribly. If we don’t get diagnosed quickly in these later stages, the pain can be unbearable, the decrease in mobility into disability, the progression of Lipedema to lymphedema… all that. We are at the end of our rope and doctors like this are our last hope. I heard this year Dr. Herbst has stopped seeing new patients. Unfortunately there are still so few doctors who even treat this like she does. So many stage 1s have all the appointments that many of later stage are on wait lists of up to TWO years to see a specialist like her. I’m nearing my appointment after a yearlong wait and I’ve gone from walking pretty well with a cane to barely dragging my heavy legs along with a walker. This is life and death to many of us.

@@dorigutman6217 I hear your frustration, and empathize deeply. I would only posit that you are addressing different issues. One is the very unjust, unhelpful bias and stigma against fat people that prevents them from getting the care they deserve whether they have lipedema or not. A second is the overall ignorance or simple lack of experience/familiarity regarding lipedemia amongst general doctors, and the lack of specialists. I am with you on both of these
My argument is one that prevents ever getting to those unbearable later stages. Virtually EVERY photo and video shows an advanced stage. How would life be different if you had known at age 15 or 20? But who is considering lipedema when its almost indistinguishable from normal fat? And then we end up in this situation where surgery is our only hope of relief....

My first lump was diagnosed as a lipoma without encapsulation. But as I've gotten more lumps and they are getting bigger, I've done my own research due to a heap of family members being diagnosed with EDS. And figured my problem is this. Now seeing this video am 100% sure if have lipodemia. My tummy is the same shape too which specialist is best to diagnose this?

Wait....hypermobility and flexibility can be symptoms? I just thought I was weird. I have swelling in my upper arms and legs that will not go away even with diet and exercise and I get numbness and tingling in my arms and legs but my doctors think it has something to do with my back from a car accident I was in 13 years ago.

If you tissue can stretch easily and hold more fluids it’s cumulative and at a certain point if you aren’t doing resistance training the fluid never gets out and basically balloons. The best thing for EDS is resistance training starting slow and gradually increasing resistance. Make sure you sweat , there are resources for resistance training if you have bad knees already thi NG s you can do on a balance ball ect.

Very informative. I wish I had a doctor like you that knows what to look for. What kind of specialist should I see to get properly assessed for lipidema? Also what should one do to get rid of it or reduce it if you find you are retaining fluid? My body has become alot like the patient's in the video in the past year or so. After being on a medication for my RA I gained 20 Lb. which went mostly to my hips and stomach and even after going off it I could not lose more than a few pounds of it. I have never been this heavy in my life!
I have hypermobile elbows and fingers (especially the last joints near the fingernails) and stretch marks but was ruled out on the Beighton Scale by a rheumatologist because I couldn't touch the floor, touch my wrist with my thumb, or touch my tongue to my nose. I've always wondered though whether I might have vascular EDS because I found out later that I have venous insufficiency pretty badly and some sort of problem in my carotid and vertebral arteries that two ultrasounds have interpreted differently; one saying I had plaque, the other just months later saying it's not plaque but thickening of the artery walls. I don't know what to think of it and have an appointment to see a Cardiologist in March to find out more. I have pitting edema in my lower legs which may be fully due to the venous insufficiency but I wonder whether it might be a combination of things.

Hi guys I don't know if I have limpodema but 8 mo ago was dx metabolic syndrome and prediabeties. I also have non hodgins lymphoma. Once dx with zero guidance at 5 ft 7 245 lbs bmi 37 I had to find my way out. I decided on a lower carb, low calorie food intake. I couldn't exercise as I just had a hip replacement. In 8 months I had changed glucose from 6.7 to 4.6 and lost 54 lbs 22 inches. I still have about 25 lbs to go for a medically healthy weight. I do think very strict recording each day of everything that went in my mouth and a quite low calorie restriction at 1000 calories a day and between 20 to 40 grams of carbs is my key. I've increased the calories and carbs to 1300 and 50 g carb a day in July and I'm still losing albeit slower. Good luck everyone being predisposed to diabetes is scary and losing weight takes so much concentration. I hope this helps some 1.

I have had an increase in stress for the last two year and suspect among other things to be in the second stages of Lipedema. I have already asked my PCP two times for a referral, which she keeps denying and using age as an excuse(along with herself) to blow me off. The last visit she was told that all this concerning me, because for the last six months it's becoming extremely difficult to walk and once again she just ignored me and walked out of the office, so don't know what to do to get this referral, which they insist is needed to be seen.

Thats a horrible shame - this healthcare system and these Dr's are completely unfazed -- all the hopps and obstacles we have to go through and demand to be heard and get a diagnosis. Find yourself a new Primary Care, who will listen to you and be open minded to your concerns and ailments, also come with notes and print outs/articles when possible. I'm getting closer to getting a lipoedema diagnosis - finally after 2 years in and out Dr and specialists visits

I'm not too far from Baltimore where there are more knowledgable doctors, but my problem is I have other health issues that make it hard for me to drive, but it's far enough away that I can't ask someone else to take me. I really wish I could find a local doctor who takes insurance. My doctor seemed completely ignorant about it and thought I was saying lipedemia, which is not the same thing.

I just keep being referred to psych. I don't have an issue with being a hypochondriac, I just need someone to care. I have like every single symptom, doc here thinks it could be cancer but I dont. I know its dercums and fibro. I also have lynch syndrome though so.. could be cancer sometime. Ugh life is so sucky.
