As a 51 year old who's only been running for a couple years, I can say that, for me, the pros outweigh the cons! Danny, may I ask how many miles you were running in prep for your very first Marathon? Im a year younger than you, not a natural runner, but am currently running 3-5 days per week and extending the distances now that I'm only 12 weeks away. I work very long shifts (14 hr days and nights) and find it hard to routine. Any tips would be awesome, thank you

Get on a running plan that will help build up your endurance. 12 weeks is enough time, but I have to say that you have a tough schedule! I quit smoking a couple of months back and started walking to take mind off it. Then I thought I'd walk a marathon a month ago and broke it down into 3.3 mile laps spread during the day with little bits of running included. For some reason I didn't do 26 miles, I ended up doing 33.5 miles instead 1st time (which was potentially very stupid). Increased amount of running and used interval timer and done 3 normal marathons since. 2 marathons in 3 days recently (mostly walking). Hey Coach Nate! I ran two half marathons last year and I´m planning to run my first marathon in June this year. Thank you for the excellent content! It helped me a lot !
After running a dozen marathons and several triathlons over the last 20 years, my run schedule has taken a back seat to cross training. I still enjoy running but in context with strength training, swimming, cycling and Racquet sports. I feel fitter and healthier than ever at 67 years old.
Don Mann Cross training is important to prevent injuries and keep you running longer. The rule of specificity says you have to run to be a better runner, but you can’t run at all if you’re injured! 👊🏼

I've done many halves, and thought that the pandemic would be a perfect opportunity to very slowly build an aerobic base for my first marathon. Motivation is key and this video helps!

I just completed the CIM for my marathon debut. I loved everything about it. I’d done half’s, 10ks, 5ks, even ran track in high school and college. Back then I considerEd the mile and two mile long distance runs. Now I don’t even feel warmed up until 3-5 miles into a long 🏃♀️. I’ll CIM again and I have a few 10s and half’s on the calendar along with some cycling events. Should be a great and active year..
There is a great local marathon called “That Dam Hill” in September that is my target for my first marathon. It’s just a two mile loop course but people will be running half, full and 12 to 24 hour ultras at the same time.
Sunshine Smiles Thanks! It’s a local tradition so there is a lot of spirit around the thing. Especially the idea that there is this climb up and over a small dam every loop. It’s very low key and do it yourself. You can even set up your own aid station along the loop so you don’t have any nutrition or hydration excuses. With all that it is also a certified BQ!
I was training for my first 21 km race and I had to quit because of my health. Currently I'm doing running sessions between 5 and 18 km one day after other. I'm 59 .
I'm 59 too. Have done two half marathons and will attempt my first full marathon at the end of abril. Currently at about 35 miles per week and will peak at 45. Best of luck. We can do it!
The friends part-- quite true! It's hard to make non-runner friends understand why you won't show up at weekend or late night get togethers because you need to train, or that you can't drink with them anymore. Yes to having running buddies (and other disciplines) instead. Getting my friends and colleagues to get the running bug is still a goal for me. Completed 4 full marathons and one ultramarathon so far, and with a half and full coming up in the next 2 months. Wish me luck!
The piece about getting into other sports is so true. Crossfit brought me to running a Marathon, and I doubt I’d have held up without mixing in strength and body weight work. I haven’t lost a toenail yet. I feel like I’m missing out.
I was talking with a non-running friend and she asked how can I possibly talk about losing toenails like it’s completely normal 😂. Training for a marathon influenced me to make decisions on how I can improve my performance. Hence, it has helped me eat healthy foods, avoid junk foods, quit smoking completely and get enough sleep.
Ran my first half marathon in October (Scotiabank Half in Toronto) and running my first full FULL in April (Waterloo Marathon). Your videos have been extremely helpful and amazing motivation for my training!
Ran my first marathon in November (Osaka Marathon) and it was fun. Didn’t properly train for it and limped in, but I finished. Going to run a few 10k’s and half marathons before I try it again. I’m gonna keep running until I can’t. Btw, I’m 52.
Reggie McKinnon Great attitude! I think you’ll be amazed how much easier it is when your adequately trained. Not easy! Never easy! But definitely easier! 👊🏼
There are competitive 5k runners who have no intention ever to run a marathon. (If a 5k is too easy, you're not going fast enough!) If you like half marathons, do them and be proud of your accomplishments!
Totally told like it is, thanks for another great video. From own experience absolutely worth trying at least one full M, and you will want more marathons afterwards too, and see some real health benefits. From a sports pov a marathon requires a lot more fine tuning of your effort compared to for instance a half where you can still be pretty much in "go for it" mode, very cool experience.
Great video! I've only recently started my journey (to a half) and I'm documenting it on my channel, but your content has been so inspirational and informative. Thank you!
I trained for (and ran) a marathon last year. During that time, I put on a lot of weight, got slower over all distances (in fact, I got so slow that I LOST all my training buddies because I now can't keep up with them), and it taught me how much I hate running. So, no I'm not a big fan of marathons - it sucked all of the joy our of running for me.
Just registred for the 2020 Paris Marathon ... my first on April 5th 2020 ... today just 6 months ... I'm crapping my pants. I'm only used to 10 and 20 k runs ...
I've read about an Austrian man who runs marathon distances literally a few times per week. But he gives himself around five hours to finish it. It's what he does instead of watching TV. I think maybe a lot of the negative results of running marathons comes from running them as fast as you can. But I think if you just take it easy, it's good for you. A few recent studies show that exercise extends your lifetime and that there is no amount that turns you around to shorten your life. I mean, you can be "healthy" and injured, and too often that's me, but still...
Presumeably those 10-12 minute mile paces are comfortable for him as they are long slow runs. Guy is running equivalent of Kipchoge weekly mileage but at a much slower pace. Must be fit as a fiddle.
I'd still say half marathon for health Full marathon because you love the lifestyle. Also most injuries i see are from people pushing themselves to beat a time more than those who just want to finish
Ran my first half yesterday bout mile 7 my legs were shutting down, and my heart started to jump towards my chest. I made it though. Now everything hurts and sore especially my back and hips the most.
Congrats on the finish! Sounds like you were red lining. Don't be afraid to slow down. Slow is smooth and smooth is fast. Try watching some TRE videos about pacing, hydration, strength building, and running form. Best of luck to you!
Congratulations on finishing your race! Since you're feeling a lot of pain and soreness, it'd be a good idea to be doing some gentle movements and mobility exercises. We have a number of videos on post-race recovery on the channel, and here's one to get you started- ua-cam.com/video/0h78a38cX5A/v-deo.html
After 8 marathons, I’ve shifted to just running half marathons. Both the training and the actual race is too strenuous and taxing to the body. Ramping up to LSDs of 27K to 32K - I’m training - takes too much time and takes a toll on the body. On the actual race itself, you take your body to so much strain. Recovery takes a week. Running half marathons is definitely much better. You can survive with 3x a week of smart training and still finish a good half marathon by Sunday. The best news is, the race itself is enjoyable and the recovery is negligible. I think the fitness level of a half marathoner is very good. And you get to enjoy other aspects of life.
Great content guys, coach Nate definitely tells it like it is,I started running in September last year after getting knocked off my bike,Toulouse 10k 44:35 in October.Lea valley London half marathon in December 1:35:15 and have entered the Barcelona marathon on March 10th,I’m aiming for sub 3:30 do you think this is realistic guys?I’m a 50 years old racing cyclist so no problems cardio wise but I’ve had my fair share of joint injuries since September already,
Sounds like you've been an athlete for a while and can run fast. As long as you stave off injuries with strength training and mobility work, that time could be realistic for you!
This toenail loosing thing... is this with everyone? Or is it just dependant if u have thick toenails or not? Or is it just if u work up to your marathon in a short training period!?
@@kiliankraus No idea, haven't done it yet. I would recommend not stubbing your toes, so a shoe with a broad (i.e wide) end for your toes to move around and spread out would be better than something to tight. It still needs ro be a good fit otherwise though. Something with no rise between heel and toe so you can land mid foot, also good inner cushioning that does not pinch will be recommended. Just stuff I have gleaned from videos I have watched. But to be fair feel free to ask others I am new to running.
@@gm2407 ahhh eventhough you're new this was very useful information! Since I'm not really a runner I haven't heard of much of these things before, I just have a marathon on my bucketlist so I'm half curious
@@kiliankraus Start training 1 year before the race if you don't run, you need to build your stamina and endurance before you do it. Got to prevent injuries. There are a few nice videos on training blocks so you can build up to the race.
Cant answer that without having some details of your expereince etc. If you know how long it takes to run say 5 miles, that would be a guide - multiple by 3 say for a rough guide
amblincork thank you. I ran 9 miles the other averaging 10 min miles. I don’t know how slow I am and what to compare myself to. I’m getting ready for my first half marathon in March!
@@thehonestlife3618 Well done - probably safe to assume you will do the half at around 10 min pace but with more training and the adrenalin that comes from running in a race you may do better ! 2 hours /2 hours 10 mins will be a good target for first Half !! Enjoy the experience - first long race is always a great achievement !
Finding your videos super helpful! What advice would you give to rock climbers getting into running? Is it good strength training exercise for running?
Hi Katie, I'm a trail runner and rock climber, and it's an interesting and surprisingly complicated topic! Short answer, yes, I think climbing is great for running because of the full body strength and body awareness you gain, and I use it as *part* of my strength training. I supplement with more work in the gym with weights and a lot of mobility work. I generally climb and strength train twice a week and run three-four times, but since I'll be training for a race this spring that ratio might change! I highly recommend listening to episode 7 of the Training Beta podcast that features Steve Bechtel. He has TONS of insight about climbing and training and thoughts about running, as well (spoiler: he claims training for both will never get you to your full potential in either, but if that's okay with you, as it is for me, then go for it). Linking that episode below for you! - Paige www.trainingbeta.com/media/tbp-007-steve-bechtel-training-power-endurance-running-weight-loss/
@@TheRunExperience Thanks so much for the detailed response, I'll be sure to check that podcast out! I want to avoid buying a gym membership at all costs since I can't really afford it, I have the climbing gym and I can run outside but I guess it might be inevitable (:
I'd love to run a marathon this year. My problem is my speed. The military pounded into my mind "fast fast fast" for PT tests. Everytime I slow myself down, as my mind wanders off....i speed up again. I'm gassed way, way, way earlier than I should be. Any tips from people on here on how to "snail it" would be awesome lol.
Last Action Medic Use the talk test. You should be able to sing happy birthday/recite the Pledge of Allegiance if you’re running at a low-aerobic heart rate! Give it a go! It’s a lot easier than running fast! Ref. your mind wandering off: running is, above all else, a mental game. Master your mind and you’ll be able to run any distance! 👊🏼
There is new evidence that running 5K is better for you than running marathons. TED has a talk on the dangers of running longer distances. Why does everyone want to run marathons, other than the fact everyone else is doing it?
Coach Nate, great video, still getting back into it after the MCM. Slowing building up my weekly volume mixed with strength. All good and thanks for the videos.
Obviously it’s not for everyone. Not everyone is an athlete. So the people sayin blah blah knees blah blah. Ok. Maybe that’s you. I know people that have been putting serious mileage in for 20-30 years. They’re fine. I personally can handle multiple marathons and ultras a year injury free. I wouldn’t recommend someone coming off the couch to do that. It takes years of running. Correcting your form. Building your mileage. If you decide your gonna start running and sign up for a marathon and you have no athletic base, then yes your going to break yourself off and it’s going to take a while to recover. Be smart and enjoy your running
In fitness running more than 1 hour is overtraining, you lose muscle its muscle catabolism. Running 5k 3x a week and doing weights training 3x a week is more healthy thatn running 10 -20 kms a day..
There is new evidence out there that running marathons is no better for one's health than running, say, 5 K's and that it may in fact be less good for you. The marathon is an arbitrary distance and has no added health benefits associated with it than shorter distances.
Both non-runners and marathon runners don't live as long as moderate runners. Look at "marathon runners mortality" and "marathon runners life expectancy". That's a downside.
No marathons are not healthy. But as long as they are spaced out and you get enough recovery then it should be fine. Of course i dont know any logical person who says marathon running is healthy

The key seems to be drinking loads of electrolytes, carbs while doing it and eating well.
Wonderful! Congrats on your first marathon!
There is a great local marathon called “That Dam Hill” in September that is my target for my first marathon. It’s just a two mile loop course but people will be running half, full and 12 to 24 hour ultras at the same time.
Good luck... That sounds horrible but that might be the point :D
That's really cool!
Where is that dam hill? Sounds like a good time.
Julie B It’s in London, Ontario, Canada!
Hi, thanks for all your informative videos. I just finished my first half marathon.
Prasad Raut Congratulations! How did you do? Do you have another race planned?
Haha I think the "lost toenail club" is one you could happily skip ;)
Trust me, you're not.
Good luck at Waterloo marathon!
Woo! Good luck in April!
I LOVE THIS! Truth right here!!
My IT bands are my main threat. Using the foam roller every day
I love to run and have completed many half marathons, but I honestly have no aspirations or desires to run a full.
Lyndsay Vegan fellow vegan runner 🙌
Half marathon is a great race distance, no need to run farther!
half marathon is an amazing distance, don't need to step up if you don't want to.
Stick with what inspires you!
There are competitive 5k runners who have no intention ever to run a marathon. (If a 5k is too easy, you're not going fast enough!) If you like half marathons, do them and be proud of your accomplishments!
Great video! I do struggle with the idea that as a runner you can be strong, not just a lean endurance machine. Need to adjust my mindset 🏃♂️🏃♀️💪💪
Ed Collop Strong AND lean is the goal! The strength will make you a better runner! 💪🏼🏃🏻♂️
Running my first half and full marathon in Brighton in feb and April 🙌
Good luck at Brighton!
Woohoo!
thank you@@PoetWithPace
Thanks! Very helpful!
Im away from drinks and smoke, i think that is pros
Gosh Coach Nate, you sure made it sound inviting there at the beginning! 😂 I do love how you guys tell it like it is.
Thanks coach Nate, am doing my first marathon next May.
Thank you!
Thank you so much! And good luck with your training leading up to your half :)
Once you go ultra you never go back. Go long go dirt!
Mike Lawson Yep, there is something very satisfying about running long! And something a lot less painful about running on dirt!
Wow absolutely spot on, everything nate says is sooo true! 👌
Exactly, a marathon does not have to a target - it can be a road to better me
Great video and info! Thanks for inspiring me to start my own UA-cam channel and make RUNNING VIDEOS !! 🔥👌
enjoy youtube!
Alex Race UA-cam is a blast! WTG at becoming a content creator! 👊🏼
Thanks Coach Nate!
"lost all my toenails" and yes lol that is very relatable. Still aiming for that distance though, just making adjustments :D
😂
I just lost three of my toenails and blisters too 🤣🤣🤣
Plain answer to a plain question...is not healthy...but it is definitely a challenge worth to try...and addictive too.
When someone doesn't tell you actual health benefits of marathons. But he did cover valuable points.
Mental health is still health.
Thanks for another great video! 😀
i agree!
Just registred for the 2020 Paris Marathon ... my first on April 5th 2020 ... today just 6 months ... I'm crapping my pants. I'm only used to 10 and 20 k runs ...
Can I call myself an athlete now?
Me after finishing my marathon 😅
Yesssss! Congrats on your first marathon! I’m still trying to muster up the courage for a marathon, currently training for my first half in April :)
oh yes!
Definitely!
If you finished a marathon, you're an athlete! Congratulations!
Awesome advice guys
Even after 1 marathon and some half, still asking my self am I a runner?
Definitely a runner :)
Sound advice as always Nate :-)
It is just trauma. Stub your toes enough it happens. Don't need to be a runner for it to happen. Nails grow back just got to guide them.
@@gm2407 is there anyway of avoiding it cuz damn to seems painful
Would anyone like to share what a descent or average time or goal time looks like for a half marathon run?
@amblincork thank you, I REALLY appreciate your feedback!
where did you film this? It looks wicked familiar
- Paige

@@TheRunExperience Thanks so much for the detailed response, I'll be sure to check that podcast out! I want to avoid buying a gym membership at all costs since I can't really afford it, I have the climbing gym and I can run outside but I guess it might be inevitable (:
When you try it already then you already answer your question
January 22, 2019. Running marathons year in, year out, for decades is not particularly healthy. A handful as a bucket list are fine.
Thaaaaaanx nice effort
I’m running 5ks. Is it healthy?
There is new evidence that running 5K is better for you than running marathons. TED has a talk on the dangers of running longer distances. Why does everyone want to run marathons, other than the fact everyone else is doing it?
Right now i can't even run 20-30 miles a week due to injury. Running is extremely hard on the body imo.
fitness and health is two different things.
Yes.
Coach Nate, great video, still getting back into it after the MCM. Slowing building up my weekly volume mixed with strength. All good and thanks for the videos.
Faulty mechanics in the system, lol. Yes, I found a few but keep running. Strength training has helped a lot.
Yes it does!
I think it taxes your body too much, ortho, cardiac, vascular, etc......halt is my max runs.
Depends. Training can be healthy. The marathon it's self can seriously injure you.
Have my first half marathon in September bring it on #iamarunner
you're gonna crush it!
The Run Experience I will let you know 👍
In fitness running more than 1 hour is overtraining, you lose muscle its muscle catabolism.
"dude"!
thought i'm the only one who gain weight because marathon training :D
Cameron Hanes runs a marathon a day, I'm sure once every couple of months is fine.
No, it's not healthy. That's why we should stop telling people that every person can and should do it. In my opinion.
Yes I trained 4month i ran a marathon in November if I had to do it again YES I DEFENDED DIABETES AND HIGH BLOOD PRESSURE
Hell no!
If Oprah and Al Roker and do a marathon, so can I dammit!!
No
A gate way drug! LOL!!!
That intro-music is terrible!!
What? Alien body doesn’t look awesome?
science says it actually destroys your heart and knees
Quit it with your ads on UA-cam, I don’t even run...
u break the body down to much to be healthy not worth it
First
waste of time: dont watch, he doesn't cover any health benefits...
Healthier then being fat
