Using Tension to Repair Collision Damage With PDR

- In this video we show some more basics of using tension in PDR and auto body repairs. This time we repair a bedside that was damaged in a minor rear end collision.
NOTE: at the 3 minute mark we resume the video after repositioning the reflection and I lost 3 minutes worth of camera footage because I forgot to turn camera back on. So some of the crown work is missing and dent looks suddenly better after that point. I was going to scrap the video but decided to put it up because the rest of the content was very informative.

No you need someone who specializes in that.
Your pretty confident that the glued on pale on the side panel won't let go while ratcheting the tension. Standing back there could result in an injury. Pretty cool though...
@Jazzhog I understand your concern for personal safety, but after all the years that he’s been doing it this way, if there was a potential risk, he would advise the viewers.
Obviously he is using really strong glue, so there’s less risk of it letting go.
If someone were to use weaker, cheaper glue, it would break a lot sooner, with a lot less tension on it.
Just an observation, that’s all.

good video. do you find that peice of wood better than say a metal slapper to take down the crowns? what exactly is it made from?
It's a paint stir stick from Home Depot. I would have used a metal slapper if the buckle had been any worse.
Interested in doing some of the glue pulling myself but i realize there different glues for different pulls how do u know which to use an brands
Lots of variables but many people like Tab Weld glue

I have basic instructions on the pull tabs in one of the videos I don't remember which one though. Nothing on the rod tabs.

I’m interested in all of it, but especially the rig to hold the doors in place whilst applying tension and repairing them.
I can weld, so the fabrication won’t be a problem.

I've never seen this method before. I'm not knocking it by any means but, I fix dents just like this day in and day out. Tapping in highs, working out lows with picks. Can usually fix them in about the same time as this video which doesnt include the set up time for the chains, jack, etc
Hi David. If the dent had happened from a straight on hit then I would not have used tension at all. But it was a light rear end hit that caused this dent and fixing it with tension works much faster in this case. The dent would have just moved around and never got to the level it did with a standard type repair you describe. Total set up time was about 5 minutes.

I wish the camera angle could have shown what was happening a bit better so that I could understand the different steps. I could not see the highs or lows. Perhaps a more oblique angle? Really interesting though.
Ya I've tried everything but white is the worst color to film with. And on doors if I use an oblique angle then I can't see to fix the damage. I put the overhead LED light so the crown would show some but thats the best I could do.

What was it? Why is everything crooked at the finish?
Everything isn't crooked. The reflection bends around minor panel changes that were there from the factory. The repair was 98%

Id love to figure out how to do tension as a mobile tech
You can make yourself a lightweight Euro dozer. Go online. Look it up and make your own. It slides under the car and chains to one side. The other side has the articulating arm with a porta power pushing the arm while the other end is attached to the rail or boxed tubing. It's the way we did it before they had frame machines. You could have it come apart in pieces and assemble it when you are ready. Probably cost you about $500-$1,000 to make including the porta power. 3-5 ton( porta power) will be enough.
Ratchet straps are designed to pull down< for tension

Why not just push the dent and be done in the amount of time it took you to set up like a bodyman
Because of the vertical pressure buckle that I showed in the video. That buckle was caused by a rear end hit not a straight on hit and would never have let that dent be finished.
