100% agree with the comparison to Ross Brawn! There's a 0% chance James wasn't making mental notes of how Brawn handled people and development at Honda/BrawnF1/early Mercedes, notably the importance of having a long term plan. A point you made very well with his approach to driver development.
This team is going to be so interesting to watch over the next 3-5 years!
I'll admit that when Vowles was first appointed at Williams, I thought he would only be there to be a yes-man to Toto with Williams ready to serve Mercedes' every whim given all the "Valtteri it's James" moments. So colour me impressed at the fact he's standing his ground and enabling Williams to start rebuilding their reputation and equal kudos to Dorilton Capital for continuing to back the team even with the major investment needed for the modernization of facilities.
I'm so relieved to hear this. I want the Williams academy drivers to have some hope and that Mercedes won't just slot who they want in that team. James has a lot of good ideas and talent and I'd love to see Williams back to some glory on their own.
Besides, Mercedes would be lucky to have such an amazing rookie.
Honestly, I think Antonelli would be a better fit for Merc from a team chemistry standpoint. I think Alex and George would be too Lewis/Nico where George and Antonelli would likely be more Lando/Piastri...
Of course, it all comes down to personality chemistry but I just think there would be a better starting point with drivers at different points in their careers.

@@dannylagangonzalez6832 Remember, Lewis and Nico were very good friends also. Everyone (myself included) considered Lewis a step above Nico, until they were in truly equal equipment.
I actually like Alex and George quite a lot and would hate to see them possibley repeat what we've already seen at Mercedes. I also have doubts about Merc's ability/willingess to effectively manage equal drivers.

Agree. He’s got far more Wheel Knowledge than others that are basically just fan channels catering to less knowledgeable and/or new fans. Don’t get me wrong, that’s fine for them, but I want to listen to someone with much more in depth knowledge. I don’t need to listen to questions I already know the answer to. He’s also not British biased like the big established UK F1 media channels.
Mark Webber did really a great job in 22 in not trusting Williams and Alpine in giving a 23 seat to Piastri. To seek a solid seat for Piastri for 23 he had to explore what available, and the 23 and beyond McLaren seat was absolute master stroke.

I have become a fan of Williams since James took the helm. I love that he is putting the emphasis on Williams Jr drivers. They need their own Identity.

I don’t think Georgie Russell has what Toto wants as the Merc team leader. He’s too emotional and lacks, in my opinion, that “oomph” to push himself into what he needs to be to do so.

He had some pretty big chokes when in the hot seat last season, and he will be moving to a much hotter seat. There’s an argument to be made that he made those mistakes because he was too focused on trying to one up Lewis, but there’s an equally compelling argument that he’s just become a whiny choke artist
The new williams identity will only be possible if they stay on course, and i think James can do this. I'm excited to see them as a real competitive team for the first time in my fabdom

Unless Mercedes offers them a lot of money or a severe discount on parts, they will not accept other teams drivers. They have O'Sullivan and Colapinto. Only Haas doesn't have a junior program.
I think Vowles is especially hesitant to "confirm" Antonelli for a Williams seat in 2025 because he promised Sargeant a genuine chance at F1. with Vowles essentially saying "okay, I'm gonna give you a clean slate, do your best and prove to me (and the world) that you deserve to stay in F1" it would be a huge blow to Sargeant's confidence if Vowles promised his seat to Antonelli *before the first race has even started.*

In Mercedes I would put Antonelli in the car in FP1 at Monza, but next to Russell, Hamilton is out! As Russell, asked if I can give up my seat for FP1 the answer would be "no, ask Lewis.
Each driver has to give up his seat for 2 FP1 sessions. Antonelli will probably take two and Vesti will get the other two at merc.

It would be REALLY funny if red bull yoinks Kimi while Mercades stays confused, similar to McLaren ganking Piastri. It is worthy of note that Mercades had their eyes on Max too at one point iirc.

TBH, James has made my respect go up daily since his move to Williams. I had kind of thought of him nearly exclusively as the "Bottas, scoot over please" guy for a while (though of course I knew there was more to him rationally) - but time and time again he has proven to be careful, rational, and measured at Williams and with the driver academy, logan, etc.
I'm happy to see, as you said, a potential new Brawn in the field. I hope he stays a while and stays on a positive track :)

This is expected of James behavior last year saying he did not want any driver for a one year deal. The biggest piece of evidence that Vowes want's upward movement is the fact that Williams denied Lawson for Sargent. None of us would sensibly say that Sargent is better than Lawson. But Vowes wants consistency and to develop cars and drivers for the long term. These are the biggest reason I am on the Williams hype train.
Yep. He's also fair and the advocate for young drivers. He'll give Logan a chance and only part ways when it's clear the data isn't looking like it's improving.

Personally, if Kimi does become f2 champion, i think he needs to sit out a year to get a feel for a car then come in. I think Williams needs stability with upward trajectory right now, and JV knows this.

Driver academies are a problem for F1. They need to look into how they are regulated.
As for Kimi and Williams, I suspect that Vowles is setting a negotiating position. Slapping Kimi in for year to polish him up for Merc isn't much use to them, but if they could secure a sweet three year deal with some Merc goodies thrown in then it'd be hard for them to say no (all this presuming, of course, that Antonelli impresses in F2).
James is such a good team principal. No being bullied around by bigger teams or playing the politics games, and just focusing on the job at hand. Nice work JV!
In some ways this is great, we don't want the teams to be too connected or beholden to the top teams (like all the concerns around Souless money grab RB being a second red bull owned team), but on the other hand it seems to be harder and harder for new drivers to join the grid and Sauber being the training ground for ferrari, williams for Mercades, and Tauro Rosso/AlphaTauri for Red bull was a great way for new drivers to show their stuff without the pressure of top teams immediately

Good, I'm glad for Williams as an organisation.
They're not there to do as Mercedes or Toto wants, just because they've got a former employee there who they supply power units to.
Vowles needs to do what's best for Williams and it's employees, including the drivers and that's that.
I think if Williams can keep their improvements up with Albon leading and a new rookie could make things massive for Williams. If thats Kimi or one of the academy drivers itll be a team to watch.

As an argentinian, Vowles words give me a bit of hope of seeing Franco Colapinto (one of williams F2 drivers) in that Williams seat eventually (he needs the money, and no one innthis country has it, sadly). James seems really compromised on trying to bring back Williams and that's good, I am not a fan of Williams but they belong to the top 5 teams of the grid, not the bottom 5.

seems like the right decision, not only for it being not fair to bare the brunt of the growing pains for a driver with none of the rewards. But also, Antonelli is currently a midfield F2 driver, which is not good enough for F1. He needs another year to try and get top 3 to prove he can make it with a more powerful car.

Williams will be a top 5 team after the regs change because of James Vowles. His energy into that team, and how he has changed the culture and mindset are exactly what they needed. He told Alex Abon that he needed to start thinking about winning, because Williams is going to be a team with everything a driver needs to win a championship.

There's probably a solution somewhere in the middle of Kimi Antonelli has to get the williams seat and no way he's getting the seat.
It's probably in Williams' best interest to give Kimi Antonelli the seat if Logan Sargeant is showing no signs of improvement and none of their academy drivers have the superlicense points required for F1. A 1 year contract with option to extend on a year by year basis if no Williams academy drivers is ready for F1 seems like a good deal for both Williams and Mercedes.
If Alexander Albon is moving to another team I don't think that Williams should give the seat to Kimi Antonelli. They'll need someone more experienced to replace Albon, someone who can be a mentor to Sargeant. 2025 would be Sargeants 3rd season in F1 but I don't think he would be experienced enough to lead that Williams team next to Kimi Antonelli.
If Albon is leaving i only see 4 possible options for experienced drivers.
- Perez (if his red bull days are over)
- Bottas (if Sainz is getting to sauber early for the audi takeover and Zhou stays on)
- Ocon (if this Ocon-Gasly civil war at Alpine takes place and Ocon gets the boot)
- Magnussen or Hulkenberg ( whichever Haas driver has to make room for Bearman)
Unless Sageant makes significant steps this season I honestly think that one of those 4 next to Antonelli makes more sense for Williams in 2025 then a Sargeant-Antonelli pairing. Williams need someone more experienced then the Sargeant we know now if they want to climb up the f1 team rankings.

What James Vowels is not saying is that he'll keep Logan next year and the year after even if he finishes 20 laps down every race, it's coz' Logan brings in the War Money, with Alex can't but can deliver there're bills to be paid.
Forget Kimi, he wont' sign even if Max wants to sign for Williams.
So don't read too much into it. Kimi has shown decent progress in F2 in this two races and Toto will have to bring him to Mercedes in 2025 otherwise Kimi will be snapped up by any and every team on the grid.
So, it's not about the Telemetry for James, it is cash inflows his decisions are based on.

Toto was right about Albon though. Just have a look at how Checos arrival at RBR suddenly resulted in Honda finding performance with their engines. Besides Albon is backed by the Thai shareholders of RBR...he was conflicted. If Alex retained ties RBR would be holding 25% of the seats in F1.

I have been saying for some time since James Vowles took over as Williams TP that he would NOT offer Williams cockpits to Mercedes’ or any other team’s drivers.
Williams has it OWN drivers academy and JV wants Williams to be a top team and wants those cockpits for long term Williams drivers. This is NOT the resource poor Williams of Claire Williams who would do anything to please Mercedes. Now Williams has the backing of its owner, Dorilton Capital and money. It is going to be much more independent. This is why JV rejected Toto’s pleas to give Mick Schumacher a seat and instead retained Logan Sargeant.
I think if Logan becomes more consistent Williams have a good lineup for a couple of years. If Kimi isn't ready for Mercedes in 2025 maybe i see them putting Mick in for one year in hopes of resurrecting his career in F1.

I am so thankful you brought up Lawson. It is criminal that Dany Ric had a seat in F1 instead of Lawson. Honestly, Dany had his shot with Red Bull, Renault, and McLaren and couldn’t capitalize. AT and VCARB are meant to bring in new talent and they haven’t done it since 2021 and why? A washed up driver who couldn’t hold his own when it mattered. Get Dany out and bring in Lawson.

Absent any legal ramifications from the Williams own driver academy, I don't understand why anybody should think they are a shoe in for any seat in F1. James Vowels should simply pick the driver who did the best in testing - if that's Kimi Antonelli, then fine, pick him. If it's not, pick someone else.
