Michael Andretti has said that during his discussions Gene Haas has said he doesn’t care about running at the back, it works for him. That was in the latest video from the race. You also have to understand that he will not give up the prominent spaces on his cars that are needed to run his own billboards. So title sponsorships are going to be difficult to obtain. When Gene Haas said he needed to do something about the performance I think he is just doing damage control. His real problem is he can no longer hide the truth but he will do his best to pretend that Haas is a racing team. We talk about what will Andretti bring to the sport? Well what does Haas bring to the sport now Steiner has gone? I think Gene Haas is a smart man that has gamed the system. I just do not think he cares about what F1 is. F1 should be about every team trying to reach the top and competing. Not just taking advantage of its viewership.

I feel that Guenther was the glue that really held that team together. In the racing aspect, he wasn't best placed but in the managerial aspect, he was the reason many of Haas' employees stayed loyal to the team. Now he's gone I can see a brain drain happening within the team, knowing that Gene may well sell the team off to the highest bidder where there may be no safety net for them to land on if and when that happens.

Personality wise, Gunther Steiner was the modern day Eddie Jordan I think. He's got that unusual likable personality that's a contrast to the very serious other team managers. Gene Haas has never struck me as being particularly interested in F1. I remember before their first season I read an interview where he was more interested in thinking of F1 as a business opportunity and he's not that interested in the sport itself. This is coming out more and more. He seems so far away and frustrated by the whole thing

It really does seem like Gene is all about the marketing side and promoting his own business...but with each passing year and a failure to really evolve whilst the other teams are in some way, it's becoming more obvious he's not into F1.

I don’t know. I kind of feel like he didn’t have the mindset innovation. I don’t think Haas has reached the cost cap but it should be up there. Gunther is more suited as an economist for the team to get advertisers. Having an engineer run the team might be what it needs.
The way that he was let go wasn’t it though.

    • @LawVS

He seems like a guy, Guenther, that can get things set up; then he needs the right people around him to take his initial work and evolve it from there. You want him to begin with and then bring a team around him to assist him. Him as a manger, rather than a boss, would be excellent.

For me it always made sense if Binotto joined Audi for their engine project as he worked in the engine departement at Ferrari in the past. But he would probably be an interesting name for the engine programs at Alpine or RedBull.
But also Sauber doesn't really have a real team principal yet and it begs the question why that is. I mean Alunni Bravi is just in a weird position and seems more like a spokesperson than anything else and it is clear that he will have to step down again at some point in the near future. Either they waited / are still waiting for someone (Binotto) to return from gardening leave or they just keep the position vacant and let Audi do whatever they want to do with it. Also Binotto was born and raised in Switzerland so that would be a match.
Well f it. I will just predict now that Binotto will be the new TP at Sauber as soon as he is able to sign with them. I mean why not? He has the experience, was probably not as bad as the media made him out to be and Sauber has a need for a TP after such a bad season. Also Hinwil is probably a very good place to be right now. I mean they can't really do worse, have a lot of upside in my opinion with the investments coming in and there is still the fact that Audi is joining in 2026. Could be a great place for his redemption arc. And if Audi still wants to place someone else in that position from 2026 onwards, they could just give him a 2 year deal.
And imagine, Binotto going from Ferrari, the sports most historic and prestigous team, a place where everybody is so proud to work for an institution that, since centuries, is building the worlds most iconic and beloved race / road cars, a place where the employees wear the prancing horse on their shirts as a badge of honor to the marketing shitshow that is the "Stake F1 Team" right now. I get where Gene is coming from. He never seemed like a man with great ambition, just wanted a solid midfield team with the occasional shining performance.
So his idea of buying as much as possible from a front running team and outsourcing the rest with just having an on track team sounds fine. This is the model Helmut is pushing for at Racing Bull AT.
Having two wooden spoons in 3 seasons is also unacceptable. We don’t know the conversations between Gene and Gunther, but things had to change and maybe there was a compromise on the table Gunther didn’t want to accept.
I think next year they can take it to Stake F1 and maybe even Racing Bull AT.

One thing I think people aren't considering re:Andretti buyout is that if that happens, he wouldn't be the 'savior' of Haas's staff. If anything, he'd be making a large majority of them redundant. Why would an American IndyCar team with GM backing have a technical facility in Maranello? An office in South Carolina? Even the Banbury office would be on the chopping block, as it's simply not big enough to host a proper F1 base. The only reason Andretti has to buy Haas is simply to get his foot in the door, their facilities are of absolutely no use to his prospective team and a buyout would probably be a disaster for most Haas employees, especially the Italian ones

Finally Steiner has been let go. It was about time. Although, yes, Haas has to thank him for lasting so long in F1, but after so many years of underdelivering considering the equipment they had (especially in 2019 and 2022), it was time to give someone else the chance. Especially in 2019, Haas had a very fast car, but they somehow still managed to finish in P9 of the championship.
However, like we say in the German speaking room: The fish starts to stink at the head. Another big problem is Gene Haas himself. We have a cost cap, so it makes sense to go close to the cost cap. Of course, Haas' wish of being efficient is good and has to be followed even with a bigger budget. But if there is a chance, go to the limit. It will benefit everybody.
Another problem is that everybody else is blamed, but Haas doesn't blame himself. In 2019 it was Rich Energy, in 2020 it was the drivers, in 2021 it was the car, in 2022 it was Schumacher and in 2023 it was Steiner. However, nothing helped and there were so many other problems that weren't adressed and that were not solved for years. The team still doesn't know how to setup a car that doesn't burn its tyres within 3 corners. The team still has many pit stop errors. The team still has many strange strategic decisions. Haas doesn't know where to improve the team and it seems he doesn't care either. You can't solve problems if you don't care what the problems are.
I wish them the best of luck.

Never understood what was in it for the Haas company business, which is making and selling CNC machines and tooling for the metalworking industry. Those products are sold by specialized sales people and bought by metal industry top managers, who don't care about marketing by publicity but only look at the price/performance bottom line for their investments. Main competitor companies from Europe and Asia (the names of which you've probably never heard) would never put money in a platform like F1, but instead sell their products through specialized channels, metal industry trade fairs, etc. The automotive industry, energy drinks producers and others have a totally different business motivation when they free up the necessary budgets to get maximum exposure in the F1 circus.
So all I can think of it always was some sort of a hobby for Gene Haas, or just vanity.

Everyone's assuming that Haas will sell in the future. I don't think it'll happen, he's had ample opportunity to do so over the last couple of years with Andretti looking for an entry.
With the F1 team's troubles and Haas' troubles in the NASCAR Cup Series over the last couple of years (literally carried by Kevin Harvick in terms of drivers (Stewart-Haas Racing is a four-car team), and Tony Stewart's long-term interest in continuing his part-ownership of the team has been questioned, though I think that's quietened down a bit and SHR have put up some fighting talk ahead of the new season), Gene Haas is certainly having an interesting time right now.
