  • Trying a new way of decluttering! In this video, I decide to declutter EVERYTHING first, then determine if anything needs to be pulled back as KEEP. Making a sweeping decluttering decision - declutter it all - saved me from 30 mini decisions!
    Decluttering one drawer, one cabinet, or one space at a time makes it easier to manage stuff on daily basis. To start decluttering, I empty out the space, decide what I want to keep, then evaluate the unchosen items for decluttering, donation, keep, or trash. Join me as I declutter, organize, and clean one drawer and one cabinet in my kitchen today!

    For folks dealing with similar situations consider seeing if your municipality, city or county has a "hazardous" waste recycling program. Here we have one that accepts all the items shown (except rags, gloves, empty bottles) as well as painting supplies, light bulbs, and batteries. Some of that is in a "store" so others can use the items (free). A great place to start if you're considering using some of these before spending money only to learn it doesn't work for you. Keeps it out of the landfill, too.

    • @andreakissinger2165

      I came here to say exactly this. Even if it does end up being thrown out, hazardous waste facilities are theoretically supposed to dispose of it in a more responsible way than the landfill.

    You persuaded me to abandon fancy window cleaners. This week I cleaned all my house windows, using warm water, dish soap, and vinegar. With a little polishing up at the end with kitchen roll, it worked a treat. Cheap, safe, simple and effective.

      I can't wash most of my own windows..They are up too high (like two and three stories) and I am old and short. However, all of the window washers we have had wash them have just used soap and water and squeegee. One especially liked Joy dish soap...,

    My mom used a steam cleaner on everything in the house, when I was heavily asthmatic as a kid. It replaced dusting as well as disinfecting, as the hot steam would bring forth all the dirt and dust, ready to be vacuumed without more dry dust in the air. And all without any chemicals added.

    • @janego2018

      She used together with a cloth on couches, mattresses and carpets, too. Brought up all the dirt and killed the mites that often cause asthma. I should totally go back to her way of cleaning.

    Hey Erica, I can absolut relate to make life easier, when it comes to asthma.
    Not only cleaners, also cosmetic, candles, essential oils and some sort of cuttings from plants can be very triggering.
    And yes, ofcourse the weather, allergens + dust in the air outside or inside can also have an effect.
    I absolut appreciate that you are doing yourself and your kids a favor with going it of stuff which harms you.

    If you have a recycling center nearby, they likely accept all of those cleaners in the hazardous waste disposal.

    I'm switching out my microfiber cloths with old cotton towels...cut them up, fold them to the size you want, a couple layers, zig zag edges. They are really good at cleaning. Dark towels show less stains.

    • @fbz2415
      @fbz2415 7 місяців тому +1

      I also use old towels to dry the dishes, these are all white so are easy to wash

    • @EzAnderson
      @EzAnderson 7 місяців тому +1

      Yessss!!! So I always buy white towels - I hate the idea of there being yuck stuff disguised by a dark colour and then me touching the yuck and I hot wash them every week and when they get holes in them I cut them up, zig zag stitch the edges and get a few more years out of them as cleaning rags. And because they’re 100% cotton I then cut them up into tiny pieces and put them in the compost. Makes me feel so thrifty

    • @beans4853
      @beans4853 6 місяців тому +1

      I try to buy only cotton clothing, and the perk of the is, when they retire (torn or stained) I cut them up into new rags that clean so well because they're already washed through and cotton!

    Love this!!! Your choices are so much better for the environment too! At least some of those toxic cleaners go down the drain to our water supplies. Many people are unaware that few water reclamation centers do anything to remove chemicals and many pump the “clean” water into local waterways and onto the land. Way to go Ms. Erica!

    I am using up EVERYTHING - YOU!! turned me onto that book and I will use, once I weed out everything - when the $ is tight I just can't throw it out. I love that glass cleaner but know it is chemical central! I even use the hand sanitizers - all I bought during the 2020 panic - to clean the floor or counter and out it goes. If HORRIBLE smelling or old, I have held for our local hazardous waste disposal since as I use I have room to stash the items for now. Great job, as always, Miss Erica! 😊💞👏👍🙌

    I used to have a cleaning job and we would use a well wrung out damp cloth for dusting which always worked well. No cleaning product needed if it’s just dust on a windowsill. Same with glass it doesn’t always need a cleaner, water and wipe with a cloth and then buff with a different dry cloth after works fine if it’s just dusty. Vinegar and water and then buff after if a little more grubby. The buffing part with a dry cloth is what really makes it shine.

    Im a professional cleaner. The easiest, cheapest all purpose cleaner is; chose a dishsoap you like, put a squirt at the bottom of a spray bottle, fill with water, thats it. Can use it on everything including glass. I use this method for work and home. Be careful with vinegar, its acidic acid and will eventually ruin surfaces and seals especially in the washer. People have a tendency to overuse it.

I use a homemade isopropyl alcohol cleaner for pretty much everything aside from my kitchen counters as it can etch the stone. I also removed all things with fragrances from the home. Hoping that more people come to this conclusion like we have! Great work & I enjoy this type of video.

    Erica I loved this video I've been going through the same process but haven't got to the cleaners yet I'm going to try the Dr Bronners. I also swapped out paper roll for organic bamboo terry towelling cloths, I'd resisted this for a while thinking they wouldn't work. I made about 15 and really only needed 3 maximum. I made them in cream then regretted the choice of colour . They rinse completely clean I can scrub our old rayburn with them or wipe up tomato based sauces and they rinse back to cream immediately and they dry quickly and never get smelly. I would 100% recommend trying them. xx

    I would like to comment on that bottle that you put aside after you put aside the brillo pads. That is the best spray bottle on the market. Not the product inside but the bottle itself is made so that the tube that is inside runs down the inside of the bottle right where the liquid is and the sprayer is really high quality. It always works and works for years and years, refill after refill . Mine was a 409 bottle that I've had for probably 10 years but I've used it with homemade concoctions for probably at least 9 of those years.

    Looks great! My only concern would be storing heavy things I use often in a high cabinet. I would personally prefer to have those things under the sink or in the closet with the vacuum, or even in the bathroom or garage. Maybe because I’m a shorty, I just never put anything in a high cabinet that I need a stool to see, that would hurt if it fell. I keep my paper towels up in those. 😬

    I’m an Aussie so I don’t know what the Brillo is. But if I have a pot that has burnt food etc on the bottom I just use bi-carb soda and either a microfibre cloth or a scrub mummy. It works great with just a little elbow grease 😁

    Great job switching to not only environmentally safe but health safe cleaning products. I was thinking you could clean out and keep a couple of the bottles to use with your home made products but you already have what you need. The only thing I would change is using microfibre clothes, they are extremely bad for our environment. Maybe read up on those and make a decision for you 😊. Love the ending of your video and time with your son.

    Sal suds and water cleans just about anything. I don't like baking soda as I find the residue is annoying to get rid of. Isopropyl for sanitising. Ecostore unscented washing powder and that's it. I have read that scented candle, reeds and plug in scents are extremely toxic and apparently we should go easy on essential oils too. Nothing like soap, water and fresh air. Great grandma knew😊

    I sometimes watch those women who go in and clean these horrible gross houses for free and they use like three cleaning products and most people with fairly clean houses use 25. And your example of the leak under your sink, which is a common thing, is why those hoarder houses get irreparably damaged.

    Erica, congratulations on getting all those extremely toxic cleaners out of your house. So many people buy these products which are often so bad for your lungs, nasal passages. eyes and skin; especially anything found in an aerosol spray canisters. It is far better to use simple natural products and often far cheap as well. I agree with you that it is amazing how much you can clean around your home with baking soda, soap, vinegar, lemons, salt and water.

    Have you looked into Force of Nature cleaners? I have been using them almost exclusively for over a year now. You make your own cleaning solution with a plug in ionizer device + tap water+ a capsule of the Force of Nature cleaner. I get mine direct from them, but I have seen them at the Container Store as well. Besides that, I have my Dropps for laundry, Dr Bronners castile soap for hand soap refills, and Sals Suds for just about everything else (one drop in my carpet shampooer is all I need. it's crazy).

    I only use the spray away on the outside windows. I also could not breathe using it indoors. You made me laugh so hard a few times. I have a really hard time with anything perfumed. Most of what I use is unscented/fragrance free. I use branch basics for most cleaning but have a few things I have not been able to part with because nothing works as well to me.

    My husband has asthma and I can't use that window cleaner or anything Mrs. Meyers. Her products might be more natural but the scents are overpowering. Anything in a spray can is worse, I switched to lemon oil from furniture polish. To me burning scented candles, Glade plug ins, or any room freshener sprays are even worse for asthmatics.

    Every time I buy a product *most* people love like in UA-cam cleaning vids, it’s awful for me. I cannot handle the smell for most and they cause me to cough horribly (Method disinfectant spray I’m looking at you). Just as a tip - magic erasers while probably not nontoxic, work wonders on light colored walls and don’t smell.

    Have you ever heard of or looked into Norwex? I have very few cleaners in my home now (and I make those as well). I use Norwex cloths for windows, stove, floors, mirrors etc. Please take a moment to search them. I wash my windows with water and dry them with a window or polish cloth. No smells at all. All I use is water as they contain "baclock". *BacLock is an antimicrobial agent solely intended to protect and self-clean the cloth by inhibiting growth of odor-causing bacteria, mold and mildew.
