I’m sure someone has already touched on this, but that aromatic tree at 16:12 is a Myrtle tree in Oregon, also known as California Laurel in CA and also called pepper wood. The dried leaves are called bay leaves.
Those of us from The Southern Oregon have always been told/and say the Oregon Myrtle wood and the California Bay laurel are two different trees. Scientist say they are the same. What are you going to believe science or folk lore? :) What Matt found was Bay Laurel.
This tree is actually called a bay leaf tree.
I saw them and my first thought was that they might be a White Oleander bush but wasn't sure since they have similar leaves even to a weeping willow
Your reply is on top. Ive never seen California bay laurel hiking but as a landscaper (we love Latin) it's Umbellularia californica . . . as apposed to store bought Laurus nobilus or "Mediterranean bay laurel"
@@michellerondinone9398 I also first thought of Oleander
you should find out if the government took areal photos of the area of Edd's mine. In my area the government takes aerial photos every five years or so going back into the fifties. Like Edd said, when lost the Golden Nugget 40 years ago it was in a field with no trees. So the problem with his memory may be that so much has changed that he can't recognize any of his land marks, because they've all been grown over. If the aerial photos exist, there's a good chance the Nugget will show up in it and it would be a lot easier figure out where the mine is in relation to it. Plus any roads that where recently used, at that time, could probably be seen in the photos, even if they're just dirt roads.
Ive been riding my mountain bikes in the same places for decades. Many of our remote trails completely disappear in the spring time. The way the mountains have changed over time (especially in deep canyons) is amazing. We're close to the San Andreas faultline too. Ive ridden to it in several places.
Going back to a place you were familiar with all of 30 years ago might be incredibly disorienting.
Even the mulberry tree in my front yard has grown 5 or 6 feet since I moved here 26 years ago. Now I feel old!
I'm a geologist in real life and I've been on several of these wild goose chases. One time we ended up having to call in a helicopter rescue for an elderly professor and several students near Las Cruces, NM. The older the prospector the less likely you'll find the spot. Facts.
I’m from Las Cruces😀
@@Desert_sky575 I think they renamed it but it used to be Aguirre Springs
In California were there not laws in the 1980's that you need a permit for a gold mine?
It seems to me that there should be an old map from the state that shows all the gold mines in production in the 1980's
I appreciate Matt's comment and attitude about rattlesnakes - that they are more beneficial alive. Thank you Matt. That's not to say I don't get spooked when I see one - you bet I do! But Matt did the right thing by leaving it alone and expressing a live-and-let-live message.
That all aside, rattlers are the most cordial of snakes. They'll at least tell you you're pissing them off. Other snakes just do their weird motions and expect you to notice them as they do so while camouflaged. Rattlers will almost always audibly tell you you're pushing your luck, which is quite polite of them. They also get rid of vermin which I'd rather them do than have to try how to get rid of rats and mice. So yeah, if its not trying to advance into your house unprovoked and for some reason trying to attack your family and/or friends like a cult B movie, rattlers are pretty chill.
Well I agree with all those points, and I'll add one as well. The dnakes are in their home, and Matt and Co were invading it, and second point, and im a canadian bushman, if you kill it you eat it. And use everything thay animal has within your abilities when you harvest it.
Came here to express the same sentiment. They're highly misunderstood, but are very beneficial to our ecosystems. It's very unlikely you'd ever get bitten. If you do, it's unlikely that it envenomates you. If you are envenomated, it's highly unlikely you'll die from it. In a nutshell, I'm more afraid of getting struck by lightning on a sunny day than dying from a rattlesnake bite. Just leave them be and they'll be on their way in a hurry. I'm far, far more afraid of moose.
Until they bite your dog on the snoot then they suck…dog lived.
LOL about moose! I was on a narrow trail in Grand Teton NP, in the dark, and very worried about grizzlies...singing to announce my presence. My headlamp created eyeshine 15 feet away. Then...I hear a rush of something toward me. It was a young MOOSE!@@idahomike
Matt while looking for Ed's lost goldmine you found a small tree that you did not know and you asked if a botanist could identify it. You found Umbellularia californica or Oregon myrtle or California laurel. My name is Bob. I work for the Rogue-Siskiyou National Forest in Medford Oregon, I love your show! I watch every episode. I also watch Fab Rats, Robby Layton and Casey Ladell. Keep up the good work!
That shrub you like the smell of is California Bay Laurel (Umbellularia californica). Closer to the coast it gets very large. Has a lot of other common names too, and in North Bend, Oregon the wood was briefly used to make coins, which are technically still legal tender.
I live in Reedsport Oregon just north of Coos Bay and north bend
Also can use it in cooking replacing bay leaves.
In Oregon, I believe they call it Myrtel. The seeds can be roasted like coffee beans and have a taste like mocha.
I was off road this weekend and harvested my years supply of califonia bay leaf.
It makes a great tea
Classic line: "We got flashlights. We should have brought these from home but we don't have any because our wives didn't help us pack." Love it!
Seeing what you all do for Ed and what he does for you is amazing! He makes me miss my dad, who I lost a couple of years ago at age 89. He had amazing stories about what he lived through and did growing up. Hope to meet you all and Ed someday!
How is it that Ed looks twenty years younger when he's in the woods looking for gold with all his best friends? It's a mystery.
Nature can improve man - man can not improve nature.
_Barry Goldwater (He made that comment after he signed the bill to build Lake Powell)
Nature does wonders
It’s that gold fever bro. It’s really a real thing. 😂
Yea, it's something that I notice in my dad as well. Gotta keep cajoling these old folks to keep adventuring.
@@SegoManyikes, I’d hate to live with that kind of anti human bias.
An airline pilot, a nuclear engineer, and a tow truck driver walk into a bar....
You'd think one of 'em would have seen it.
And they've all called Matt for a tow
Ed. Don’t feel bad. My wife got the mine when her folks passed. My wife had not been to mine in 30 years. I researched info. We went on two hunts before we thought we found it. Her sister had been there 5 years ago so she got us there. I bring a rope. It’s only 35’ but it helps bring others across. Her “mine” was buried 15 years ago for insurance reasons by a dozer. Hikers were going in.
Matt and Tom's interactions are just the best. I love seeing these two spend time together and talk
Ed is an inspiration to all old people. I just turned 79 and actually met Ed, I can tell you he makes me go out and do more in my golden years. Thanks, Matt, for your friendship with a great man.
My best bud's dad just turned 79 yesterday. He is still working full time and he is in great shape!
Loved Ed's alligator joke 😂
Adam 12 Episode 26, Season 1
Reed told joke to Malloy.
Been around at least as long as Ed!
So a Chihuahua is just an alligator😂
Technically a "short tailed alligator"@@sharonnicholson3393
I remember first hearing it in the 70s in Ft Lauderdale 😂..as I recall it was a ugly yellow dog!!that got killer😅😊
Ed has some great friends to try this hard to find the lost mine. The Morr crew are some of the best people out there. And I love Matt's stories.
I really hope they succeed
Well aside from how amazing they are, it also makes for some great viewing.
I'm always impressed with Matt's cardio. He can out work, amd out hike all his crew. The man is truly a king amoung men.
@@goodbyemr.anderson5065 yea all while talking to camera and singing!
You could say that was a different kind of offroad adventure for Matt and the crew .
What a beautiful area you were in there Matt .
13:53 Your little rattlesnake friend there is a Northern Pacific Rattlesnake (crotalus oreganus oreganus) or a Western Rattlesnake at the species level. And Matt, you are completely right, they aren't something to be afraid of and they are better alive then dead. In fact, they're more deadly when they are dead, their bodies when dead can completely freak out and you can actually still get bitten and the venom will still be active even after death.
I'm still laughing at Ed's alligator joke. 🤣 I love how Jake smiles no mater how dire the situation, and how hard the hike. He has a solid gold attitude, and is probably my favourite member of the MORR crew.
Was a good one 😂
It must be an old guy joke, my grandpa used to tell the same one!
Strangely enough we tell that joke in my country too. And it's an old one too here.
That “Buckmaster” Johnny-Boy is professionally a pilot still blows my mind.
Also, never stop including the “there’s a buck” clip and introducing him as Buckmaster!!!
You guys are true friends to ED. We all love you guys for what you are doing for him. Not to mention how much fun you all are having looking for the Gold.
Hi mat, the tree you saw is called a bay leaf tree. People used to use them for flavoring and as a preservative, and it can also be used for medicine.Hope this helped.
I was thinking eucalyptus.
California Bay Laurel, Umbellularia californica
Still use bay leaves in cooking.
My mom always used bay leaves in cooking. I recognized them immediately when I moved to northern CA. Fun fact is the leaves stay on the branches forever if you cut them, and movie greensmen often use cut branches for that reason.
The best story is watching Matt and Tom smile and have a great time together with friends!
Life is hard. It's cool to see a bunch of great friends & relatives just having plain simple fun and adventure ❤️
I really enjoy Tom as Matt’s Duo on the channel. He’s such a perfect balance to it all.
It really has turned into
_"Matt and Tom Find Ways To Get Lost, Build Stuff Together, and Reminisce Show"_
And I love it.
For sure!! Tom is awesome!!
I agree. They kind of remind me of the "sesamestreet" for grown ups. :D
Tom and Matt are fun to watch , but a poor substition for Lizzi
Tom has come along way, when he first joined I wasnt so sure but he can hold is own.
I love all of the different characters and people we have been introduced to through Matt’s channel - Trevor, Rudy, Lizzie, Skeeter, Randy, Tucker, Tom Tom, Jeffe, all of Matt’s Children and Wife…. you can’t forget Ed and then the other channel off shoots… like Fab Rats, Robby Layton, Mis Adventure Lab, Skeeter build….. Rory and his awesome Crew along with Merlin’s crew…. All of these people owe Matt a big thank you - We are thankful for Matt-and all the enjoyment his channel has given us! I would love to see Lizzie start a channel on her Ranching life!
Yall are a great group of people to try and find Mr Ed's gold mine. I am sure that he is so grateful for it. Glad Kolby is ok
You've gotta have dreams, and this dream has kept Ed alert and interested for years. I'm just glad that he didn't take the news too hard!
I would like to take a minute to thank the camera peeps and the editors of the show. Y'all are really doing an amazing job!
👍🏻 especially the saga of the orange
I like that someone made that fake newspaper to tell the Lower 48 legacy story. They didn't have to do that, but I appreciate that they did. I stopped and read it all.
For the second time, the'lower 48' is the term that we Alaskans use when referring to the contiguous United States. Google it. I'm sorry, but somebody fed you a line of crap.
As always, a great video. Ed is truly a legend. We were in Hurricane the middle of Sept. None of the crew were there, but Jodie and Greg were very gracious and helpful. Greg pushed, pulled, and drug my wheelchair around the lot, so I could see all the vehicles. Thank you both very much ❤. (And tell Matt you both are a great asset to his team.). It makes me believe there are still many good people in this world! 🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸
Glad to see you wearing protection while hiking.
Being prepared for anything.
Yes BUT You Are In The Communist State Of Falicornia And Wearing Protection Or Even Bringing It Into The State Could Be Felonious Especially If You Had To Use It! But Better To Be Alive And In Trouble With It Than Dead Without It
I love the bear spray that Matt’s carrying 😎🦾✊🇺🇸
The narrow leaf makes me think its a California Bay leaf tree. Very aromatic and useful to keep bugs out of your long term dry food storage (Flour, oatmeal, etc).
I was thinking sweetbay magnolia. They should go back next May and see if it flowers or fruits!
That was my thought. Looks like bay leaf.
Came here to say Bay Leaf.
Myrtlewood (Orygun), Pepperwood (NW California), also called a Bay Tree (California).
Pepperwood
More "field trips" like this, please! Recoveries are great and the builds on Sunday are awesome but there is something about the human relationships of fun and kindness that makes this channel unique and worth the watch every single time. It is a blast to see where you eat and who you meet and all the "try"s and antics that you being us along for. Appreciate all your efforts and the amazing crew (+ pilot Johnny). God bless you all!
We love you Ed ❤ Matt and crew I hope you go go back again. That’s awesome that you all went and did that.
You are awesome. We all need stories like this in our lives we can learn a lot from the older generation. Stories true or not it was the experiences that matter most and recording them for the future for the next generation to learn from.. Makes me miss my dad Thanks for sharing
It's sad that you didn't find Ed's mine. I grew up in Nevada City and know the area you were searching. As a kid my father and I hunted deer in and around the little town of Washington, up the Yuba River to "Lost Canyon" where the trail ends. There were many mining claims along the river and a lot of test tunnels into the canyon walls. We wouuld always go into them, even scared the h--l out of me. I'm sure all of those have been caved in, sometimes on purpose. Thanks for the scenes I remember, and taking me along. I'm in my 80's now, so this was the only way I can get down there now.....
Why do they cave then in on purpose? Is it for safety, so no one will go into them and potentially get themselves trapped?
The area where they were looking is part of the Tahoe National Forest, which is maintained by the U.S.Forest service, and could be held responsible. There's still some in the remote parts.@@rovers141
Matt, what you do for your people is unbelievable. I know of no other employer that does such things.
I love that you referenced the biggest Ball of twine in Minnesota… I’m actually from Darwin, Minnesota, where Francis Johnson, the creator of that ball of twine lived. I actually met him when I was a kid. He had a really cool museum, and he actually made some phenomenal carvings out of big timbers… Pliers that kept folding out to some crazy length… Hard to explain, unless you see it. The ball of twine is now in a hermetically sealed display building… it is just a o cool that you referenced it! And I love watching your channel!
Surely you've heard the Weird Al song he was singing?
I just love the outing you took us on. On my hiking trip I do not wear jeans as they keep the heat and do not help you cool off, my go to is a light pair of quick dry paints. You all be well. 🇨🇦
One of the best, if not the best, episodes yet. Gotta love Ed. He's the true captain in disguise.
When you took off the knuckle you probably pulled the CV apart accidently in the boot. They can seperate like that easily.
My thoughts exactly. I doubt he was just driving around with a broken CV without knowing it.
@@wirebrush My guess is they trying create a reason for upgrade, it is useful when your significant other is not happy about your spending ;)
It’s jefe makes sense
An outer cv don't fall apart like that.
The inner one does.
@@mrolsen6987 Installing them with a 4lb sledge helps with their destruction.
I've hiked hundreds of miles through the Sierras and its definitely more about the elevation gain rather than the number of miles. Good job guys! 👏
What a GREAT video of your beautiful area regardless of the lack of a gold mine.
Tom Tom has been a great addition to the crew. Anyone that can lift the spirits when you're down is ok by me. AND be funny whilst doin it!
First, Its great seeing Sir Ed so healthy and happy. Second, each and every one of you are good people. I consider you all friends
Ed has been laughing in his sleep sending fools around the hills for days looking for gold .. No prospector gives up their secrets, just wild goose chases LOL
Ed knew where the nugget was, he knows where the mine is!
It maybe sassafras’s.
Ed sending his fools looking for gold lol
That's my theory. Ed thinks Matt and co. need to get out of the dang desert every now and again and see some trees, maybe touch some grass. 'Go find my gold mine' is just his way of motivating them.
Note how Matt galivants around the place while Ed sits nice and comfy back at camp laughing at their antics.
i think he knows where it is, but i dont think he knows how to get to it anymore
As a Europian I'm so impressed by the sheer vastnes of terrain, that is just open to hike and explore. Here in tiny little germany everything is so crowded and you don't even have the chance to explore or get a little lost minding your own buisnes. You will meet someone or make someone angry that your of trail. ^^
Come to America !
Check the first videos when they're looking for the golden nugget, there was apparently alot of negotiations before they could look for the car
You've got a few places like Schauinsland mountain, but I get your point.
You can hike through the alps without meeting anyone quite easy. You can't compare hiking through the wilderness (what they are doing) with following a hiking trail (what you are obviously doing)
In spite of everything else, our national parks are definitely a point of pride. We have 81, 000+ square miles of protected parks. Many are vast open wilderness, while some are as busy as a city. Some are deserts, some are rain forests, some are frozen tundra. It is for future peoples that we protect them. For reference Germany is 137,000+ square miles.
I absolutely LOVE your channel. To the point that I want to start over landing. In order to do so, I ordered a lift kit from ROUGH COUNTRY. I AM POSTING THIS AS A WARNING TO EVERYONE..... I purchased a 4" lift kit for my 84 Ram Charger. I was told that it would have EVERYTHING that I needed. Well, the front sway bar links, the rear u bolts , and shackles all had to be repurchased due to the lift, being more of a 6" lift. So, it is a bit taller, but my husband is a double amputee, and this causes a problem.... Not including the $248 in parts that I had to purchase afterwards. OK, so I called RC directly and even though he agreed that the wrong parts were in the box, he REFUSED to help in any way! We live on a tight budget, and this f**ked me over , HARD! I just don't want any of you to have to go through the extra money, and crappy service!
Sometimes I think of how fun it would be to hang out with Matt. This makes me reverse that thinking. As a native to Nevada, I do appreciate that he says Nevada right.
Crunchy peanut butter all the way! Good to see Ed back in the mining area reliving what had to be an amazing time in his life, he looked 20 years younger up there in the mountains! Thanks for taking me along on this adventure!
Jiffy creamy all the way, crunchy ruins the consistency of a PBJ imo.
@@SniffinTrout to each his/her own
Aw. I’m sorry Eric couldn’t make it! He’s one of the best personalities who hardly ever makes an appearance anymore.
Reminds me of the skipper from Gilligan's Island. 😂
Great adventure! Thanks so much for taking us along.
Loved this episode! What a great crew :) and it’s wonderful to see Ed again, reminds me so much of my grandpa :)
This episode was a fever-dream all the way. Those guys are in far better physical shape than I imagined they could achieve pulling cars out of mudholes.
It is possible to do physical exercise outside of work. With that said, they’re either working and fabricating, or hiking around pulling cars out of hard to reach places.
I love those kind of hikes. I'm fat and look out of shape and don't have any problem with those kind of hikes especially at that altitude. I'm used to 10k plus. Thats the good stuff.
Matt seems a little pooped though
Everyone gets caught up in the same day to day loop, so great to see people making memories outside the box.
We should all be doing this.
Gotta have vacation time first
You should be over landing with the jeep
If everyone did this it would no longer be enjoyable. Keep your mouth shut and get out and enjoy it before the woods are busier than the city.
Do you. Enjoy them, do your life.
I used to work in concert production, building stages/roofs/and running sound, we had a killer of a gig every year we called Creek week. Mudfest, super humid 110° heat in the middle of the field just 100% misery. One of my now very close friends started singing "kiss from a rose" by seal and saved the day. We had a hard 3 day build but we were singing that song the whole time and took our minds off of the suck we were going through. Matt singing during this hike made me smile real big thinking of that.
Matt and Tomtom, in South Africa we call that a Naartjie. A soft citrus that you can peel by hand. Our Oranges have a hard shell and you have to use a knife to peel the skin off. Thanks for the great video!! I really enjoy watching each and every one!
We have both as well, regular oranges are bigger and taste better in my opinion.
The orange story is best with both versions. Everyone who has ever been in a dicey situation with Mother Nature will remember a version like Tom’s. But in the moment, they will also remember that it felt like Matt’s version. 😊
We need to see Colby upgraded with lockers for the next hike 😂
When Matt began reciting Weird Al's the biggest ball of twin in Minnesotta, I lost it.
you can tell ed is in his element as soon as you see him on the video! he looks and acts 25 years younger, and so happy to be there!
Wherever you feel discouraged that you're not halfway through wherever you want to achieve, remember this; you're halfway through somewhere.✌️ ~ Matt (Matt's Off-road Recovery)
Tom and Matt remind me of my Best Friend Doyle, I knew him for over 35 years. That Orange story was pure beautiful UA-cam entertainment..... love the content your team provides.
This video was awesome, I hope to get outdoors more often and this was motivating, also hearing Ed telling stories reminds me of my grandpa and his personality and his old stories, thank you for the memories!
Ed always looks 20 years younger when you are out looking for the mines and talking about the mines.
Gold fever is real af.
There have been some significant earthquakes in California since Eds day, like the 7.2 one in '92. If the face of a hill sluffs off during one of those and no one is around to observe it a lot could be hidden. Just a wild hair idea. Also, good to see Tom answer the age old question about what bears do in the woods 🤪
That’s what i was thinking. At one point in the video they are standing on a hill that looked like a bit of landslide
My grandfather was a Coal miner, when he was near the end of his life we would drive around Lee County and Harlan, Ky. looking at old Coal mines. This reminds me a bit of that.
Great adventure video! This channel has such a great variety of off road recovery, including the recovery of Colby from his fall. 😂 In all seriousness though, I hope your knee heals quickly Colby!
Ed, your looking really good. Good to see him healthy. Miss him in the videos
I can’t tell you the joy I get listening to Ed. He reminds me of my great grandfather who was the closest thing I had to a father for a long time. I used to go camping with him and listen to his stories for hours. He passed 10 years ago in his late 90’s. I’d love to meet Ed someday, I really think if they ever met Ed and my grandfather would of become great old friends.
I kinda know the larger area and that is brutal terrain. Snakes, bear, poison oak, a bats and a newt, the full experience I guess. Hope Colby is okay
I enjoy watching your videos. My wife laughs because our cat Clyde lays down next to me and watches your videos with me. I don't know what he finds so interesting in your videos, but he seems to enjoy them as much as I do. When I switch to Robby, Trail Mater, or Fab Rats Clyde leaves. God bless you and all your crew. Take care and God Bless.
Matt , I have been humming and laughing to myself since Sunday when I listened to you “sing” one of my favorite songs. Love that someone else gets joy out of an “odd” song. 😊😊
Matt and Tom are like Laurel & Hardy, and I’m not saying who’s who. But after this episode maybe you two should be doing some stand up comedy, or entertainment skits at the retirement home. The orange story had me in stitches. Oh, and as a side note Matt, you hike in style with the Hawaiian shirt….Love it!
Another fine mess you’ve gotten me into! You are on the money with this comment.
One of the best things in this world is good friends.
Very cool to see everyone coming together to try and fulfill Ed’s dream of finding the mine.
This is corny but he's already struck it rich meeting Matt and his family and friends. If he had a million dollars I bet his life wouldn't change much.
Thanks Matt for respecting nature! I wish more were like you👍🏻
Ed’s lookin really good. Glad to see it! Happy adventuring guys.
That tree is California Bay Laurel. Known as Myrtlewood in oregon. You guys rock!
This hike truly embodies Matt's go-to attitude. Tough but always gets it done!
Not that anyone cares, or even should care, but its been three months since i watched matts videos, watching this one just reminded why regular television sucks big foots dinky. Awesome adventure gents, cant wait till my slow season and i can actually catch these three times a week.
Also, I've said this before in the comments, but matt and his crew are some real beauties. Like kings amoung men.
If Ed just got some gosh darn hearing aids maybe you all could find the mine😅.
Awesome 🎉🎉🎉to see you guys helping Ed priceless memories ❤
Thanks, guys, for a very exciting show looking for Ed's lost Gold Mine. I truly hope you will find it and Ed will be there. Let the memories roll!
The tree you were smelling was a California Bay Tree I believe. Those leaves are commonly dried and sold for stews and soups, great for a roast. Also be sure to update us on the crew's Poison Oak rashes they will assuredly get, I saw a few of ya traipsing through some really BUMMER patches of it.
Yep those are bay leaves that people use in cooking!
it is some kind of Laurel...
Wow, that was a crazy hike. Glad you all made it out safe.
Hey Matt, it's great to see you enjoyed your meal at the Owl Club here in my hometown of Eureka NV! Hope you had a great trip!
Kudos to the editors of this video. Well done, particularly the orange story. Also, Matt singing Weird Al is classic!
I really enjoyed the MORR newspaper thing about the lower 48. I stopped and read it all. A lazy editor wouldn't have put in that kind of effort.
“He’s going to do a lot more good alive than he is dead” is the best advice ever on snakes, even poisonous ones. They have a vital place in the ecosystem. So infuriating when you see people going out of their way to kill a snake, any snake.
Venomous, not poisonous. If you bite it and you die, it's poisonous. If it bites you and you die, it's venomous.
I believe this plant is California Bay as subspecies of California Laurel. If that's it, is is also called Oregon Myrtle (one of the names is Balm of Heaven, interesting enough considering your enthusiasm for the tree). I got this info off an awesome app that I use all the time. It's called "Picture This" and is a worthwhile addition to one's hand held if you like hiking, jeeping or just wandering around. According to the site this bay has use in cooking, but is stronger than the usual bay leaf used in some recipes. The CA Indians used this leaf for medicinal purposes. Love your posts, love my Yankum ropes, loved meeting you in Cache Valley and have watched you guys since you first set out on this adventure.
Cheers,

A lot of tough going, but still no mine. I haven't caught up to Ed yet but getting close. Went back to one of my old haunts from the '60's and couldn't even find a topographical landmark that should have been right there - think time changes the topography in our minds.
Absolutely loved Ed's Alligator Joke, Ed tells it in perfect timing. The orange story, got me more confused, since Matt bought Clementine's and not Oranges :) but both stories are funny, and I can relate to Matt if you are excited for some liquid and food and then you get shot down :)
Way the go really enjoy the channel
Great Weird Al song. I had forgotten about that song for decades until you started the first verse... Then it all came back...
Without question, the most wholesome entertainment available.
Just perfect
This was another great production. I've come to realize, after recent hikes to fly-fishable waters, that getting around in the mountain west, the least bit off trail, is extremely difficult, dangerous, and surprisingly treacherous. Early, non-native wanderers had a tough go. It's as tough getting around here as it is in the forests of the PNW. I'm always thinking, "How did they get anywhere?" Ever found yourself in a fen, feet from dry ground, wondering how to close the gap? I found a few books on "wetlands", and zeroed in on bogs, fens, and swamps. They need respect, not filling. You guys stayed on dry terrain, only suitable for passage by hunched over, tough hide bears. Tree branches are brittle, sharp, and everywhere: let alone their poisonous leaves. It's murder getting anywhere. And then you're in a fen.. Congrats on surviving: you all look like you were recovering in the lot. Colby should get his knee fixed: If he doesn't it will get its revenge after he hits 60. I often think early adventurers were permanently screwed after accidents like that.
You're not wrong. The PNW, especially closer to the coast, west of the mountains, has some of the thickest, densest forests anywhere. In spots, you literally can't go a single step without negotiating at least a couple obstacles. Anything from branches, jagged rocks, uneven ground, BLACKBERRIES... good lord the blackberries.
If youre ever in Central Colorado do I have a fly fishing hike for you
You're right! I live in western Wa and you can't see more than three feet, if you're lucky, through our woods. And, yes, ugh, damn wicked, giant, twisting and climbing blackberries ! Stephen King should use them in a horror story !

Blackberries are no joke....I accidentally rode a dirtbike into thin air into a blackberry thicket about 15 feet below..... I was just a kid, but I knew my young life was over....Amazingly, I landed on my back and didn't even get the wind knocked out of me.
The pain began as I realized I was hung up in blackberries probably five feet off the ground.....It took me hours to escape. My jacket and gloves were shredded. I was bleeding almost everywhere except my head (helmet) and feet (boots).
The true misery began when I went back the next day to find my bike and remove it...... That took all day...My friends left me to my own devices after about an hour. I have always been gifted with having friends smarter than I am.
@@bobsullivan5714 I've only grazed the berries from outside the patch, crash landing in them from above sounds treacherous.
Ed's version of sending the kids out to go snipe hunting.
Have a 2017 Highlander from 0 mines. Best SUV and not VAN I've ever bought lmao you guys are all amazing! Keep up the great work.
I like Matt's version of the story. More of a plot, & filled with drama, & ends with a lasting suspense.
The aromatic tree is most likely 'California Bay Laurel' aka 'Oregon Myrtle' (depending on where it is found). It also has other names like 'spice bush', 'mountain laurel', 'Headache tree' and 'balm of heaven'.
It's aroma is due to the chemical umbellulone (a chemical known to induce headaches, hence one of it's names).
I scoured the comments for this thank you😂
@@shilohstore6086 I had fun trying to identify it. In fact I'm still 'down the rabbit hole' with some of the articles I came upon.
I feel a bit guilty accepting the thanks for something I enjoyed doing, but you're very much welcome just the same. Glad to be of service.
Best wishes to you and yours.
@@shilohstore6086me too. Lol!
It is a Bay Laurel, we have them here in the coastal range of Ventura County.
Umbellulone does not give the leaves their aroma. California bay trees smell very similar to other bays which don't contain it.
It just gives you headaches.
Wow, that's some heavy duty bushwhacking you guys are doing...talk about dedication! I'm getting itchy just seeing all that poison oak! As far as the orange story goes, let me offer the old John Ford quote: “When the legend becomes fact, print the legend.” 🙂
As a life long Nevadan, thank you for educating the rest of the country. 🤝
Yup!
It wore me up just to watch this video. I can’t imagine what it was like to actually be there. I can say it’s better you than me thanks for filming this!
Man I need a group of friends like you guys. Thank you for sharing the adventure. And as far as the parable of the orange goes... Mat wins. You never let facts get in the way of a good story.
