- Budget EF K-Swap, Part 2: A K24 for less than $300?
By Brian Gillespie
The long awaited for Part 2 of our Budget EF build is here! In this episode we show you where we go to pluck an engine, then we do some modifications to the engine in preparation of mounting the engine. Robert (Hair Force Jaun) shows off more hairdos than Cher at a Vegas concert. Last we build our own low profile shifter to fit under the center console of the CRX so we can keep a the interior looking stock and clean.

Nothing but Hondas. That’s exactly what you’ll find at VTEC Academy. Not because some of the other automakers’ cars that inherently drain the life out of the driving experience bore us, but because Soichiro Honda’s passion for motorsports and his company’s ability to express that in the machines they produce make a whole lot of sense.
VTEC Academy is a place for Honda fans who feel the same way and who seek the most accurate technical information and commentary to continue that very legacy and make whatever Honda it is that they drive just a little bit better. And faster.
The editors and contributors of VTEC Academy are some of the industry’s most experienced and trusted, which means the informative, unique perspectives you need are all right here. And, like you, we’re also obsessed with Hondas.
So, subscribe to our channel and hit us up at vtecacademy.com or, if you’re into social media, you can get your daily dose of VTEC Academy on Instagram, Facebook and Twitter. We’re always on the lookout for cool and fast Hondas.
Finally some Honda guys who are just about the info and content. Not about rambling or filming their face more than focusing on the cars and tech.
Subbed!
CK_32 this is why we do it! New updates are in the way.
VTEC Academy how much to install a b16 or b18 on my single cam crx
VTEC Academy I live in yuma
I like how brian says.. Your about to be schooled.... And that's exactly what he does. Thank you brian for all that you do in the Honda community... God bless you and your family...
i know I'm kind of randomly asking but do anyone know of a good place to stream new series online ?
I've been saying it for years that you could use the shifter assembly from that accord with K-series motors and it would be a better option then the plastic RSX shifter assembly! ;)
That shifter plate adapter is an Awesome idea. Metal is the way to go for any application👍👍
Bill Heckner it’s quite sturdy.
Brian was my tennis coach like 30 years ago. I’ll never forget the day he told he told me he can no longer coach me because he was going to make motor mounts for Hondas. I thought he was fucking crazy until I swapped a b16 into 92 hatch back and had to get the mounts from his company. Then I see him on pinks and all over the scene. Dude could predict the rain and weather and is probably one of the smartest coolest humble professional people I’ve ever met! Long live Brian G
Is this Ronnie Black?
One of the few hybrid forums still around. Thanks hasport for everything you guys have done over the last 20 years
So happy to watch this!
Honda Street Garage Yeeeeah, boi!
Dammit boy!
@@VTECAcademy I know this episode is a little older but want to know if Brian makes that bracket for the accord shifter? I really want to buy one. Please let me know! Thank you. Love you guys content!
These videos are great! I like using the buddy club Rsx shifter because the weak area is reinforced. Had great luck with that and it's low cost at 100 bucks. Then you can always upgrade stuff with Mtec bushings..etc.
Kudos to you guys for the forward thinking of that plate. I like seeing some ideas to improve on just the normal swap stuff. Nice work.
Met rob back in 2010 when he lived in SV! Great to see yall again
Really good stuff! The content, narration, camera work, editing, music is stellar. Super educational and fun to watch.
Lack of Focus thanks!
That plate is bad ass! Im legit just wait to see how this build comes out to try doin one
I used a Hybrid Racing no cut shifter on my old krx before and it worked great. I never did have any of the interior pieces on it though. But I don't think there would have been fitment issues, though I can't say for sure. I love the adapter plate though. Anytime there is more options for the consumer I think it is better. Keep up the great work!
Speechless. Bravo
cb dreamer Thanks!
I’ve been waiting for this very video for a while keep up the good work hope to see part 3 SOON!
Love the shifter plate, iam working on my sons 91 ef it has the whole swap from a 2003 accord k24a4 and the accord transmission had to rework your hasport mounts but made it fit.
I was just given one out of a 2008 Accord and everyone is telling me that it's the worst one to do how was yours coming along?
They were telling me that I can't achieve the power because of the different internals and head on it and that it wasn't real VTEC
Brian you are my idol. I mean really. I so wished I lived near you guys. 1. bc you have tracks nearby. 2. So you could help me with my turbo EF Hatch B18. NC doesn't really have tracks like the West Coast. Maybe one day I'll find enough land to start my own...lol. Wishful thinking. Keep up the good work guys.
Brian Howard Thanks! Build that track!
Looks like you revised your metal base plate to utilize the original captured nuts , nice. I was looking at your first design and saying to myself; why didn't you just use the mounting options already provided by Honda. Really nice work, I dig it when people make the extra effort to keep stuff "looking" original while being all juiced up.
What a genius idea on the shifter box! Brain you kick ass🤛🏾
It’s like the engineers knew what we were going to do with them.
@@VTECAcademy love it
That’s shifter worked great keep up the work guys love the videos learning a lot thanks
Ktune shifter no cut beennout for years works in crx just fine👍👍
zosophnkey we think you meant KTuned no cut and it is great, but not most budget piece.
Hahah that intro though. Now I want to see Dave and Pete do the same thing with your shirts
itsToon YESSSS!
Imma gunna buy some shirts right now to troll you VTECers real good :D
David Pratte Cross the border so they won’t be so expensive. I think the shirts are $45 CDN.
I'm looking forward to K20 Fit!
K SWAP THE WORLD! I love this stuff!
Make that plate Brian!!!! that would be great
Always with the good content, you go brian.
Everytime I watch these videos.. I get sad because this is all I wanna do in life lol is fabricate and do kswaps, but in reality. Working at honda is fun and u learn but I wanna learn the things you guys do lol. TEACHHHH PLSSSSS
Good stuff Brian, love seeing "mass market" Honda engines being used up for performance, can't beat the price!
Great video. Thanks for sharing all your Honda knowledge and tips
Great video, looking forward to the next part, when they’re all out i will seriously consider putting a k20 in my ef
Wow what an awesome channel. As a Nissan owner Honda is my arch nemesis but I like your videos so I’ll subscribe and turn notifications on as well.
Ahahaha! We can all get along. Thanks for watching!
Make the plate! Great video, love watching the stuff you guys do.
RE the upcoming content part at the end: K20C1 swap into an FC3 Si? (just an idea that I've been wanting to see done) Or just mods to help out the new L15 motor? Lol. :)
My high performance background is American V8 all the way but now that I’m older and more practical I’m starting to look at something like this.
I have always been an old school hot rodder at heart and what I am seeing on this channel is way more traditional hot rodding than the typical bolting on parts out of a Summitt catalog.
Like Jesse James said. People who bolt a bunch of store bought parts together are more like cake bakers following a recipe than they are hot rodders.
Most of the fun is trying to make something different.
Love the videos! Watch them all!!
If you make the shifter plate, I’ll be one of the first to buy it😁
First time seeing this channel & video, I knew this was here in Phoenix! I was like dude that place looks so familiar lol good video, definitely subscribed!
u guys are so talented and knowledgeable
young feezy thank you!
I was like Phoenix AZ! I know exactly which one that is. Got me all gitty
CaptainVillanueva1 Ahahah! It’s a great spot!
Nice video watching from Australia 🇦🇺
I was at a rock show and some random dudes confused my shirt for Vault-Tech. VTEC Yo!!!

You know Hasport does make it right?
Brian Gillespie well y’all make it now y’all were just talking about it when I posted that comment a year ago lol.
Yes
Where can i buy the shifter plate I already have the mechanism
Please make the shifter setup..👍👍👍🤙
It’s like the old guy knows what he’s doing ..
I’m subscribing to this shit!!!
Please make that metal plate !!
Ta Kumi right ! With the lower mounting points on the mounts and that shifter plate you can run stock hood and interior without bringing to much attention
I want one as well
I can’t wait for it to be done 👌🏻💪🏻
brian is a genius
Great stuff Brian!
That’s k24 looks like the k24a1, I hear they don’t have good Vtec.. are they still good to try and build on? I know someone with a 2004 Honda Accord and his has the same engine
Julio Lopez they’re great if you’re swapping it into a lighter car and are on a budget.
VTEC Academy nice, so it would be perfect for a 92 hatch? I want to make a eg hatch awd with a k24 but I was scared the k20a1 wasn’t good. And eventually boost it 🤠
Nice fab work
A car guy favorite place to go !
Love watching your channel!
3Guys Garage thank you!
That shifter is on point! I need one in my ef! Great work!
I wanna work with u guys! Omg! I go to that pick and pull all the time! Love watching the videos!
Come join us on Taco Tuesday at Dos Gringos in Tempe and introduce yourself. We're usually there from 5:30 till 7.
Patrick Candler Me too! Good 'ole Pull N Save....formerly Ecology Auto wrecking 😁
You should have bought the entire motor and attached everything to it then get your buddy to buy it saving you plenty :) I love the custom shifter mount, It would have been better to put a ktuned shifter they're amazing.
Please make that shifter plate for the krx community! We would more than appreciate it!
God damn, that was slick!
I got a k24k20 in my 91 EF
I like these R&D videos! Man Brian you’re so creative. Keep it up, looking forward to this series.
Is the New style shirt that Brian is wearing available? Thanks VTEC Academy for the vid
If you order a shirt from Hasport, that's the one they send.
Will do,Thanks again! Great videos
Can you please make another plate and ill buy it
That plate for shifter It s sweet!!
The cables that you used from what car they coming from
RSX
VTEC Academy thanks!
I wish east coast junkyards were that nice.
Old school accord shifters just tripled in price
billy bob 😂😂
I would believe it if Brian claimed to be Tim Allens brother
My wife says that too.
Do you guys make that shifter box assembly!?!?
More videos!!!!👍👍
The best on youtube
did you ever make that plate for the shifter????
ok I have a question cause I want to swap k20a2 into my cox and someones selling a auto k20a2 for cheap and I wanted to know am I able to buy the auto motor and trans and just slap a manual trans onto the motor
Are you sure that it's a K20A2? We've only seen the A2 in manual cars. Unless somebody swapped their A2 into an automatic car.
VTEC Academy I wish there was a way to add a picture of post on UA-cam cause the add says k20a2 with auto trans the say they took it out of an rsx but the motor and trans only $500 that’s why I was interested in it
Hmm... for $500 it’s worth checking out. You can look at the engine to see if it is a K20A2.
So happy I'm not the only one now that knows the accord sifters of the cb7 era are superior to those plastic ones I did it on my 98 accord as well hey Brian login the modified speed academy shirt too love that you know them and also wanted to let you know now that your using that shift box you should look into making a throw shortening bracket look it is as short throw for that year accord and just make or weld your own bracket on all your doing is raising the cable on the right a little making it feel way shorter throw but not too high or else it is too much of an angle for the cable just cut the old tab that holds the right cable to the shift rod off and weld it as high as the angle of the cable from your mount you made will allow and your shift throw and feel will be dramatically improved I promise you I should try I know it sounds ghetto but it can be done right and reliable mine has been working for 3 years now slamming gears once I actually perfected it I tried to make the throw as short as possible and made it too high and it didn't work well now I have a nice workable smooth angle to the cable but higher then stock and it definitely feels money
love the channel, love the info. With all the K-series engines you guys throw around, I gotta ask, where is the DC5 love? keep up the great work!
I have a DC5 project car. It will get a supercharger and all sorts of goodies.
If you do end up making that shifter plate, what do you think the cost would be on it?
I love what you did with the shifter! Do you think the stock 91 rt4wd shifter assembly would work with a k swap?
I could be modified to work with the Accord, TSX or 06-16 Civic Is transmissions.
you need a 1/2 in drive Milwaukee impact it will make ur life so much easier. i have two it will pull them 32mm axel nut right off
1:11 Flying saucer? UFO? Over the young guy's head?
Argeny Sandoval it's probably a commercial air liners. The yard is close by the airport.
👽
$284 for a k24 from a crv WOW nicee 👍
Love this new style! Wish we could find this many motors and stuff in CA haha. They go FAST!
Honda Vlogs They’re our there, but you gotta be quick! So many resellers.
Truth!
YEAH! this is the kind of swap i'm really interested in! :D
Keep up the good work on the videos. Will the 90-93 accord shifter work with the 6 speed transmissions? Thanks
Such amazing info you guys share!!
Hi . Sorry for the dumb question . I can only find a 5 speed shifter . Can you still hook this up to a 6 speed trans ? Thank you very much .
is there away to order that plate?
Great job !!
K tuned no cut shifter fits the crx. I have one in mine and the centre console fits perfect 🙂
Awesome footage thank you
Love to k-swap My CRX my Prius I need my ABS pump I try to do it myself and no bueno you need one of those shot tools to fix it with the computer on it Toyota
I want to K swap my EF SI hatchback. Any information or tips you can give to a beginner? Are you making the shifter plate for EF for sale? Might use the same 1992 Accord shifter.
Did y’all make sure to use a K24Z? Or just any K24? I heard the Z is better than the A’s but I can’t seem to easily find a Z, and if there’s not much of a difference I’ll just use an A
17:21, whats that hondata shield right there.?
The car had an S300 P28 and OBD1 conversion before we got ahold of it.
Did you fabricate any more of the shifter brackets?
Found it www.hushperformance.com/product/k-series-shifter-plate
I would love to have a plate for a k swap in my 99 civic ex coupe
Would you share the file to the shifter would love to print it out and try it
Are you gonna make that plate for sale?
Yes, Hasport will.
Good video, I just wish you could put more content more often
