I fear this will end badly. Everyone will just eat meatballs and heal without food. Shame, because the old crops looked like a good addition to a main base without being too grindy.
You can literally place 1 plot, plant NINE seeds, then forget about it. 9x the crop, with only the occasional de-weeding/boss kill. The only downside is that certain plants take longer with seasons... but that's still 4x the crop harvest with 1 plot. They designed this to be as non-intrusive as possible if you don't want to change how you farm.
this changes nothing to players who didnt farm before, and in my opinions only improve the experience of those who did before. old farmign style was just a handicap to characters not warly and wurt.
TBH the new farming is too grindy as it seems, it's very resource effective, giant plants are actually pretty easy to come across with minimal input, and it looks very cool overall

I legit gasped when beard said wickerbottom is getting nerfed the fact the she can only grow 10 RANDOMISED plants definitely needs to go not cool klei 😤
I think people are missing the point, in a game called DON'T STARVE, having infinite food seems kinda OP, 10 plants is in fact too little and not being able to aim it (yet) sucks but the nerf is well deserved
**Cries in 48 advanced farms** for real tho,I really love that they reworked the farms as they were underused due to the shear ammounts required for just 1 plot!and I love that they removed the disease mechanic!
So this update makes farming a full time job. Not sure how I feel about this tbh. I can see just about as many people ditching this entire system as I do people getting into it. At the same time tho, deeper and deeper complexity levels HAVE shown to be extremely useful for a long-term niche fanbase, which I always love. t. Terraria
Personally it feels like Klei is trying to make DST more like Stardew Valley at least in the farming aspect of things. And I don't think this is particularly great for the game. Yes, it does make farming more interesting and different from just planting seeds in the ground/farm plots and then letting them grow by themselves, but in my opinion it could've been left this way, or maybe just tweaked a bit without overhauling the whole system. Now, my impression of it is that you'll have to work much harder to get a yield from your crops, and it will be more time consuming overall. And while that may be ok in the context of a game where it's centered around farming, DST is not centered around farming as much as it is around survival in general. So my initial impression isn't great, but hopefully that'll change in the future as Klei tweaks things
I have the same feeling. Everyone will just abandon farming (except for mushrooms) and eat meatballs all the time. RIP Warly, he will be stuck forever farming.
didn't he say you could forget the new parts and just plant them as though they were like before? you can still just let those crops be, and get the same outcome like before.(exception is Wickerbottom.) the update just makes it so you can do more and get more, like the lunar island, you don't need to go there, but making a boat allows for the lunar trees bushes to be found.
Agreed. Farming will be much time consuming, and how are we going to explore? they can change, yeah, the way of farming, but I dont think this is the best way. need to have someway to be automatic. the only part that I like is the giant crops and that you can display them. I like to decorate. this could have more effort, but the rest, no
The fire nettles can be used for winter when you start to freeze keep it in your inv then when your gunna overheat just put it in a bundle wrap or in chester
now I get the feeling that we will go to the moon with something like a giant plant or to some other higher "level", I mean if that's not the case don´t you guys think this update is a little off place ?
As someone who's a pretty avid gardener, this is pretty realistic, and since I like wormwood this does make me happy but damn now there are so many resources required to make the various instruments/formulas etc (and I don't play caves cause my computer can't handle it) that this just feels a little bit overwhelming. Exciting to try but also, it's such a big change man idk how to feel abt it.
From one side this update looks fun and refreshing. But on the other, it looks really time-consuming. I never thought that I need a farm overhaul. It was enough for that kind of game. Now it could take too much time, especially for solo players. I hope they make some balance changes on the way before the full release. Maybe farming wasn't fascinating, but it was easy to use. I hope it doesn't get too complicated with that ground elements stuff, tending crops, and watering. Maybe I'm wrong and it's lots of fun. I have to wait when it officially comes out and then see :P
@@pilky_boooi It is literally the same tho, plant seed in plot and wait. If you want to optimize it then yes but you don't even need to optimize it to make more food easier than before.
@@user-tg3jl1mt4e but the process takes way longer and if you want to profit from it you have to go into the complex parts also it was easier you had to get a seed and wait or use poop while the new farming needs you to water them, fertilize them (with the right fertilizer), use good crop combos, get rid of weeds, harvest them in time or fight a boss AND IT ALSO TAKES MORE TIME Stop saying "It iS LiteRalLy faStER aNd EasIeR", because it objectively isnt
im not gonna act like i understood the half of the process but one thing i like is that now farming is actually a job now. you can be a farmer and just hang around the base if you want.
I love this! Always wished there was a game that'd have realistic farming, and to think DST of all things is implumenting it, I'm so happy! Now that they're working on vegetational foods, they could really make jams or some sort of fermentation with Pear's jars available, to make Wurt player's lives easier, tho those new big crops might just be the solution
i think the update makes the game more interesting, well for me personally. I play with my friends alot and in any game we usually have jobs. One of my friends always does cave stuff and mining. one does fishing stuff. And I usually do the farming stuff. So based on my play style it seems like it will make the game more enjoyable and also more of a challange then just "plant crop, harvest crop", plus I am a wormwood main so of course im gonna like it lmao.
Seems like gwtting specific seeds from birds is going to be a lot more useful now if you're going to be planting things in cycles to get the best results
And i just played music for plants in The Spiritfarer and here we are. Also I love that Wormwood gets more and more OP. Even if I knew he is a God since the start.
Had legit fears going in about how intricate it could be but instead really liked the new system upon trying. They still manage to do better compared to the past when ignored caring. Before, how used my yields from farms was mostly dependant on bird; if it gave me enough seeds I'd make food with the excess; now I don't feel bad using the yield and mostly happy plants give a seed alongside the crop; in-season plants even give 2 specific crops. And its really great that they reward attending and overall making me actually farm crops that I wouldn't due to their seasonal and nutrient interactions is amazing.
@@J040PL7 well as much as I love this update they made farming a bit more tedious now unlike the original farm plot these cant be left alone cause of the flies just imagine every spring when u plant like 40 dragon fruit and come back at the end of the season to harverst them all in 1 go but since u didnt tend to them "EVERY SINGLE FAKING DAY" the chance of getting a big fly for every single plant is like 50% == meaning u really have to pay attention to the plants now compared to the original so less time doing other stuff in the end well just abandon farming once more and go to the meatball/pierogi rabbit farms once more Hopefully they would atleast make the farms have a bit of independence and not need Too much care when the update fully releases
Honestly, this update overall seems great, getting rid of the egg loop makes gathering food through non farming methods a bit trickier, making plants be more worth it overall. That being said honey is still op as hell making food a non issue the moment you find some bees and the rewards for all the farming don't seem to be big enough to bother with the more complex aspects. Basically, this is a survival oriented update which I like but it is unfinished and needs serious tweaking to work in the end.
Researching the plants take soooooo much time. I once spent a week tending to the garden, day and night (game time). So much time wasted waiting for plants to grow so that you can research each stage. And I didn't even get to research all of the plants since the seeds are random.
Oh, that’s actually a lot of cool changes. Gotta be honest, I didn’t like how farming worked in Don’t Starve. I know this is going to change but still, the major overhaul to farming is cool to me. Plus, it makes Wormwood more useful and that is frankly great. ...granted, I don’t play DST myself much unfortunatle, but still.
it's like they wanted it to be even more inefficient. farm plots were expensive for sure. but at least if you had some plots made once, you could just plant the seeds and forget. now they want us to put extra work into it and in a server where there are only one or two players, this will really time consuming and most likely it will be ignored.
im not a youtuber but i still think farms are good i mean i think the others always think that NEEDS to be a main way to get food but i always see them as passive food gettin that are save on the farms for later like i was goin in the caves and after i came out all food is like almost rotin but my farms are still have there food on it and i always knew if i come back to base im saved always
I mean, compared to how he was before?! Before he could plant anywhere without worrying about fertilizer and watering and crop combinations. Now he can do the same but his wild crops won't ever have a chance to become big unless they are on plots. In fact, I think it's the opposite. This update made Wormwood obsolete.
@@TheBeard777 Yeah, but this update is the perfect chance to make Wormwood the perfect farm main with little effort, a perk like "Loves his plants and his plants love him" that boosts growth times and crop yields of plants he takes care would be very nice
@@TheBeard777 Did you keep the thing it dropped in your inventory? From what I've seen in the video your temperature constantly went up when holding it.
I mean it certainly helps characters lile wyrmwood or Warly who spend more time around the base but on the other hand the old farms were nice in that you could just slam the seed. The more care the more reward. I like it because i enjoy the playstyle but i can see a lot of players not.
I think Wicker's book should just have a reduced radius, for instance the radius of the birds that land after using the bird book, but should still grow every plant within. That way growing dense farm plots is still a valid tactic as Wicker.
@@TheBeard777 That'd be even nicer. I never got to play the Forge but I'd like all her spellbooks to be targetable, especially the lightning and tentacle ones.
I think what they should do for wickers applied horticulture is that you can select an area on screen that gets effected by the book like an aoe attack in the forge
I like the update, gives wormwood better usage. Adds a whole mechanic if people are interested in completing researching all plants, and with it being totally optional shouldn't hinder anyone outside of the nerfs / loot table changes
That's sad they killed Wickerbottom. Also they probably didn't rework disease because they would need to make new sprites for all the new diseased crops.
Maybe you're still right? And the giant fruits could be used to feed a giant? Either way that uptade was quite big, have a lot of new things to learn or forget about out
Actually, I think this idea was in the works since the Gorge event, we got a look at an alternate, more natural looking farm. I think the crops even had growth stages? I think some of the new crops have potential as decoration imo
oh cool, the mini-boss that serves as punishment for not tending to crops can give an item that will tend your crops for you actually wait, I think that might just be Klei's way of helping players who are struggling to take care of crops
I’m glad klei finally got the memo concerning disease. Having to go out and dig up some more grass tufts and saplings is just busy work. Even the noobest of noobs can press a button while holding a shovel. The egg loop didn’t matter much anyway, you can just make the eggs you need and leave the rest as meat. Looks like a fun update but it does bother me ever so slightly that we can now have a container of water in our inventory yet still don’t need to drink water
Beard 777. The fire nettle does do something. If you get prick by the fire nettle for a while your temperature can raise up to 80 degree. Eating the fire nettle can also raise your temperature to 80 degree as well. The Spiny Bine weed is the worst. You must dig it out immediately otherwise when you decide to harvest other plants around it. A ring of spiny bine will constantly encase you, and you will lose health constantly unless you removed it.
@@TheBeard777 I believe you weren't affected by the two plants is because you were a wormwood. Wormwood is uneffected by these two plants. Try testing the beta in multiple different characters. Willow for example has a higher tolerance to the fire nettle unlike other character which could spike to 80 degree and overheated for about 1-3 minutes. You should also inspect the watering can a little more and find out that it not just for watering plants but putting out fire on structure and flammable object; However this isn't as effective like a water balloon or flingomatic since you can only put out fire one object at a time.
I've got a few things to say, -Firstly, how will this affect old worlds with the original farm lands & seeds? -Secondly, this update makes me very excited, revamped farms seems so good to me! -Thirdly, I now have a use for the chestful of beefalo horns on my webber world! (spiders and mating beefalos do not mix.) -Finally, do you think other insects like bees and glommer herself will affect things in the future?
Reworking farming is so cool though? Nice to see they aren’t to afraid to rehaul stuff! I’m very curious if the giant food mechanic might give us a beanstalk to the moon someday?
New update looks amazing, adds to the king's combo, and so far is a little update to wormwood so it has me excited.( if the fire needle doesn't affect wormwood then pig men and bunny farms got a lot better. ) Edit: now I want food cadipults, killing dragonfly with a giant tomato seems really funny

I agree. thankfully, mushroom planters and bull kelps exist. I will just stick to meatballs and pierogis.
this changes nothing to players who didnt farm before, and in my opinions only improve the experience of those who did before. old farmign style was just a handicap to characters not warly and wurt.
TBH the new farming is too grindy as it seems, it's very resource effective, giant plants are actually pretty easy to come across with minimal input, and it looks very cool overall
I’m getting some good ol’ gorge vibes, which was my first event. Happy time.
Hope you enjoy it!
Same :0 I LOVED that event
Im so happy they did a farming rework, I almost wish it was in solo so I could play it.
Do you not have DST? If you don’t it’s only $5 on Steam until December 1st. Please get it while you can
@@rubles88alvarez83 or he can wait for Christmas and get 2 copies of it for the same price ^^
I bought it in that way one year ago. Maybe steam will repeat this promo
@@rubles88alvarez83 I do actually! I have every installment except Hamlet which I’m getting tomorrow! I just prefer the original don’t starve experience.
Ok great for you pal
Same, I hope someone mods solo to have certain things from newer updates, because itd be rad in shipwrecked and hamlet
I feel like they should’ve made a touchstone for wormwood with the new farming update.
Like a leafymeat effigy?
@@emergency.jergens yeah pretty much
I legit gasped when beard said wickerbottom is getting nerfed the fact the she can only grow 10 RANDOMISED plants definitely needs to go not cool klei 😤
klei just said they will re-adjust that because everybody was complaining, as well as a wormwood buff
Yeah but 2 paper 5 seeds and manure is easy to find so i get why they did that.
@@piw3327 yeah I dont mind that they made it more expensive but making it worse like nah
I think people are missing the point, in a game called DON'T STARVE, having infinite food seems kinda OP, 10 plants is in fact too little and not being able to aim it (yet) sucks but the nerf is well deserved
@@PauloHenrique-it7vw But you don't need wickerbottom to have infinite food though. I think the nerf is pointless tbh
**Cries in 48 advanced farms** for real tho,I really love that they reworked the farms as they were underused due to the shear ammounts required for just 1 plot!and I love that they removed the disease mechanic!
Every update makes me so happy because when I eventully make a proper schoolhouse esque world it'll be so cool to have these plotd
*Me*: letting the forget-me-lots grow because I thought they were flowers and then realizing they were weeds 👁👄👁
So this update makes farming a full time job. Not sure how I feel about this tbh. I can see just about as many people ditching this entire system as I do people getting into it.
At the same time tho, deeper and deeper complexity levels HAVE shown to be extremely useful for a long-term niche fanbase, which I always love.
t. Terraria
I thought this was a mod review for a second
Some of the assets are from the gorge which had a different art stile
This will be more of s nuisance to players, I'll wait for a mod to come out to restore farms to the previous ones to be honest.
didn't he say you could forget the new parts and just plant them as though they were like before? you can still just let those crops be, and get the same outcome like before.(exception is Wickerbottom.) the update just makes it so you can do more and get more, like the lunar island, you don't need to go there, but making a boat allows for the lunar trees bushes to be found.
Agreed. Farming will be much time consuming, and how are we going to explore? they can change, yeah, the way of farming, but I dont think this is the best way. need to have someway to be automatic. the only part that I like is the giant crops and that you can display them. I like to decorate. this could have more effort, but the rest, no
Why would I even bother with farming if I have Moon Island food - stone fruits and kelps. I would use them as a vegetable filler for my pierogi.
I may be a person who doesnt enjoy fun, but the last updates sucked, in my opinion, because they are changing base mechanics too much
It's literally faster and easier. lol
@@UA-camAccountMan no it isnt... how could this be easier than just: put seed in farm, wait or fertelize for big speed, that is it
@@pilky_boooi It is literally the same tho, plant seed in plot and wait. If you want to optimize it then yes but you don't even need to optimize it to make more food easier than before.
@@user-tg3jl1mt4e but the process takes way longer and if you want to profit from it you have to go into the complex parts
also it was easier you had to get a seed and wait or use poop
while the new farming needs you to water them, fertilize them (with the right fertilizer), use good crop combos, get rid of weeds, harvest them in time or fight a boss AND IT ALSO TAKES MORE TIME
Stop saying "It iS LiteRalLy faStER aNd EasIeR", because it objectively isnt
I believe this patch should be optional farming would take so long that it is no longer survival game is harvestmoon together
im not gonna act like i understood the half of the process but one thing i like is that now farming is actually a job now. you can be a farmer and just hang around the base if you want.
Fire Fronds are actually good at keeping you warm during winter
r.i.p. egg loop, you'll be missed forever
i think the update makes the game more interesting, well for me personally.
Sounds like fun! Hope you all enjoy it then!
Finally, a framing overhaul! :D
farming sucks for anyone who isnt warly and wort lol, took them long enough.
@@J040PL7 well as much as I love this update they made farming a bit more tedious now unlike the original farm plot these cant be left alone cause of the flies just imagine every spring when u plant like 40 dragon fruit and come back at the end of the season to harverst them all in 1 go but since u didnt tend to them "EVERY SINGLE FAKING DAY" the chance of getting a big fly for every single plant is like 50% == meaning u really have to pay attention to the plants now compared to the original so less time doing other stuff
in the end well just abandon farming once more and go to the meatball/pierogi rabbit farms once more Hopefully they would atleast make the farms have a bit of independence and not need Too much care when the update fully releases
A cool idea for your next video could be which plants go best together to make giant plants like onions and chili’s so we know what’s the best to do
honestly nervous yet excited to try it out. my only qualm is wickernerf, and tbh, as much as it sucks, its kinda fair
Man I hadn't played for like a year and was EXTREMELY confused. Thanks so much
Oh boy, missing a year of this - especially the last year - would throw anyone for a loop. Lots has changed!
I spent literally an hour trying to find the plots in game and then just though “ok let’s go to beard”
And I didn't even get to research all of the plants since the seeds are random.
this'll make being a wormwood main a lot more fun/interesting
The premier garden hat reminds me of thaumcraft
minerman
Oh, that’s actually a lot of cool changes. Gotta be honest, I didn’t like how farming worked in Don’t Starve. I know this is going to change but still, the major overhaul to farming is cool to me. Plus, it makes Wormwood more useful and that is frankly great.
...granted, I don’t play DST myself much unfortunatle, but still.
UA-camrs: don't like farm plots for not being efficient
Klei: emergency meeting
I am not one of those UA-camrs mind you.
it's like they wanted it to be even more inefficient. farm plots were expensive for sure. but at least if you had some plots made once, you could just plant the seeds and forget. now they want us to put extra work into it and in a server where there are only one or two players, this will really time consuming and most likely it will be ignored.
im not a youtuber but i still think farms are good i mean i think the others always think that NEEDS to be a main way to get food but i always see them as passive food gettin that are save on the farms for later like i was goin in the caves and after i came out all food is like almost rotin but my farms are still have there food on it and i always knew if i come back to base im saved always
I personally hated this update in many ways, but what made me sadder was the nerf in the bird, geez what this game turned.
DON'T FARM TOGETHER
#dontfarmtogether
Wolfgang is like: BIG POTATO, MOTHER RUSSIA MY LOVE!
:D
Hahahahah! Yes lol.
I bet he could eat it whole :D
Potato I mean
Wormwood is definitely a relatively strong character now
I mean, compared to how he was before?! Before he could plant anywhere without worrying about fertilizer and watering and crop combinations. Now he can do the same but his wild crops won't ever have a chance to become big unless they are on plots. In fact, I think it's the opposite. This update made Wormwood obsolete.
I know I'm so happy. I never really played him a lot but I'm really excited to now. 😁
@@TheBeard777 Yeah, but this update is the perfect chance to make Wormwood the perfect farm main with little effort, a perk like "Loves his plants and his plants love him" that boosts growth times and crop yields of plants he takes care would be very nice
The only beard video i dont understand...he is talking science and farming...its difficult 😩 i need more guide beard!!!!!
For growing potatoes: plant a tomato plane next to every potato plant 1:1 ratio, and water it every time in ascending phase: 1,2,1,1
I can't believe they did that to my favorite librarian. How I'm gonna survive now?
the art style of the new crops reminds me of plants vs zombies.
I feel like this update makes farming too complex, but I do like the slight buffs to wormwood and I love the wicker nerf.
Beard you should know that the spykes of the new plant gives 5 souls each time you get rooted as wortox.
Cant wait for a mod to revert everything done here back to the OG single player for me
Meet the farmer. . .
Farmer: I grow you to kill.
*tf2 music*
Beard: Fire Nettles are dangerous, don't touch them.
Me in winter: let's get itchy baby.
Careful now though, it could very well be a bug however every time I got stung the heating process never stopped. I overheated until death every time.
@@TheBeard777 Ok, I'll be careful. Thanks! 👍🏻
@@TheBeard777 Did you keep the thing it dropped in your inventory? From what I've seen in the video your temperature constantly went up when holding it.

An indirect buff to Wurt.
I like it
I personally love this, farming is one of my favorite things to do in this game. That and exploring the caves lol
Glad you enjoy it!
The fire nettles could also be used as a emergency heat up in winter/spring just bring a healing item with you
In my experience the heating up didn't stop, like, at all. Chances are it was a bug however.
I mean it certainly helps characters lile wyrmwood or Warly who spend more time around the base but on the other hand the old farms were nice in that you could just slam the seed. The more care the more reward. I like it because i enjoy the playstyle but i can see a lot of players not.
As a Wormwood main, I'm excited
I think Wicker's book should just have a reduced radius, for instance the radius of the birds that land after using the bird book, but should still grow every plant within. That way growing dense farm plots is still a valid tactic as Wicker.
That, or just let us aim it with a circular radius like we can in The Forge with spell books. Easy fix there.
Fair point, it could very well return someday.
There was so much stuff, I thought this was a mod showcase...
I think the fire plant could be helpful in winter, also do weeds infect other weeds?
Maybe you're still right? And the giant fruits could be used to feed a giant? Either way that uptade was quite big, have a lot of new things to learn or forget about out
Actually, I think this idea was in the works since the Gorge event, we got a look at an alternate, more natural looking farm. I think the crops even had growth stages?
I think some of the new crops have potential as decoration imo
As a WB main, the nerf to applied horticulture hurts, but I know it was necessary
oh cool, the mini-boss that serves as punishment for not tending to crops can give an item that will tend your crops for you
actually wait, I think that might just be Klei's way of helping players who are struggling to take care of crops
I want there to be a journey mode equivalent of don’t starve where your goal is to research everything and you will be able to have god powers
Thats not the goal of adventure mode.
@@PureheartFisher it's a different mode can you read?
@@blakethepolarbear4223 There are only two modes in dont starve, survival and adventure. Researching everything is not the goal in one nor the other.
I mention that getting pricked heats you up in this video but thanks, friend!
I was literally Wilson when I encountered the two weeds as I specifically said Wormwood is unaffected...
Thanks so much Beard man. This was very informative. So much so as I will lay back on asking you for wall guides for a week.
Happy to help!
>Disease is gone
Somebody turn on that Crab Rave!!
I've got a few things to say,
-Firstly, how will this affect old worlds with the original farm lands & seeds?
-Secondly, this update makes me very excited, revamped farms seems so good to me!
-Thirdly, I now have a use for the chestful of beefalo horns on my webber world! (spiders and mating beefalos do not mix.)
-Finally, do you think other insects like bees and glommer herself will affect things in the future?
Reworking farming is so cool though? Nice to see they aren’t to afraid to rehaul stuff! I’m very curious if the giant food mechanic might give us a beanstalk to the moon someday?
Thanks for testing out the beta for and compiling this into a video. You did all the heavy lifting for us!
Of course!
There is no reason for Wormwood to plant seeds on un-tilled land now. It grows slower outside the plots. They should buff him in some other way.
As a Wicker main im just going to go cry in a corner....
It's not THAT bad. If they make it to where we can aim the spell like we can in The Forge then everything will be okay!
Ok I see, I'm embarrassed to say I never really played the forge through ☺
don't worry, klei just said they will re-adjust the book because everybody was complaining
Man that giant dragonfruit on the thumb makes me think that they have intruduce the shipwreked coffee in the game
Well.. My knowledge about farming is useless now..
But how good that I love farming and get all my knowledge back :)
New update looks amazing, adds to the king's combo, and so far is a little update to wormwood so it has me excited.( if the fire needle doesn't affect wormwood then pig men and bunny farms got a lot better. )
Edit: now I want food cadipults, killing dragonfly with a giant tomato seems really funny
Maybe in a next update, we can plant a magic bean that becomes a giant plant that allows to reach the Hamlet flying islands, idk
I feel like this update assumes you have people at base who are tending to the gardens a lot. I play solo about half the time and like to explore but it's fun when playing with others
This update could be great with a few changes
Thanks!
No problem!
