So not only is this how I found out that Sorin, Imperious Bloodlord, the first mythic foil I ever pulled, was worth big money, but that it ceased being worth big money months ago. Dammit, this is what happened to my copy of Fury all over again
I remember going to a Legacy tournament back in the days where W/B control decks had access to Sinkhole, Hymn to Tourach and Vindicate, unfortunately Goblins was the meta deck at the time and the deck struggled vs Aggro but boy, the deck was insane at locking you out of the game before it even started
9:15 I remember being super excited for bile blight because it was one of the only ways to really wrangle in Elspeth and master of waves tokens when those got out of control. I don't remember it being as effective against relentless rat because they got out of 3/3/ range so quickly, but the master of waves tokens and elspeth tokens (the latter especially) were real effected by that card. She often ran away with the game when she came down
I'm gonna be honest, I really was surprised at comparatively how little points these cards had. Only 118 is less than I expected for a cost with such great cards. I don't think any of these will be making it onto "Top 10 Vintage Cards (Minus Power 9)" anytime soon.
Thank you for putting the music intro in front of you starting to speak in the video. When you had changed it around you were really flexing on my OCD.
I miss playing against storm in legacy, and going turn one Thoughtsieze, turn 2 Hymn, turn 3 Lili of the Veil. You could see their world crashing around them.
Either Zombies or Vampires are usually good. It's a Doom Blade that costs more commit to Black and fails to hit lots of Black creature types and Doom Blade is far better coverage for Wolves Werewolves and Humans. Why do you think Victim of Night is even playable when the Phyrexian one gets around indestructible. Doom Blade might not be the top choice anymore but anything worse than Doom Blade isn't a multi format staple.
@@darthparallax5207 Disclaimer: I don’t think either of them are particularly good anymore. That said: How is Victim worse than Doom Blade? I don’t see it. 90%+ of all Zombies and Vampires are black creatures. There are very few nonblack creatures of those types. Doom Blade can’t hit the vast majority of Zombies or Vampires either, but it also can’t hit any other black creatures, while Victim can hit a lot of black creatures that Doom Blade cannot, considering it can hit non-werewolf Humans, as well as Demons, and whatever other random creatures black has that aren’t Zombies or Vamps. The double-black pips are the only substantial mark against Victim, but viable mono-black decks have existed that wouldn’t have a problem with it, and in those decks, it would be almost strictly better than Blade. Also the werewolf bit is a pretty minor downside, as very few have seen competitive play outside of standard and there also aren’t nearly as many of them.
"Fallen Empires is the worst set ever." "It has Hymn to Tourach in it." "Oh right well nevermind then I guess it's great." "But most of the other cards..." "Yeah, but Hymn to Tourach."
I was sad to not see Sinkhole; based on the Magic I've had to play, in the last eight years, it became one of my single favorite cards, and I appreciated that it was, comparably, affordable to buy, unlike Stripmine, or Wasteland. I accept that math says, but still too bad. Wonder if there is a this list, but blue?
@@WCPFISH I'm more of a mono-green with artifact support kind of guy. It's kinda fun getting just the right cards and dropping a Krosan Cloudscraper on turn 4.
It’s more impressive that it has any points in Modern since Pauper and Modern and all older formats have Night’s Whisper which is easier to cast and the only downside is it can’t be used as a bad burn spell for that last two points of damage which doesn’t even come up that often for Sign in Blood.
huge flavor loss that we didnt get a smallpox reprint in any of the ixalan sets
Brutal.
LOL. And yikes.
Too soon.
@@aerienix Too soon after what? Thunder Junction? would that have been better? lol
@@maoumcdugan after the siege of Tenochtitlan lol
Hymn To Tourache is my favorite black card. The art, costing BB, the effect
Just brutal.
Still holds up in vintage cube
Turn 1: Dark Ritual, Hypnotic Specter
Turn 2: Hymn to Tourach, Swing with the specter
Turn 3: Another Hypnotic Specter
Turn 4: The Rack and another discard spell, and the game is yours
Turn 1: Mountain, Black Lotus, Channel, Fireball
You can collect your Hypnotic Specter :P

Nizzahon picked the best art of the 4 for Hymn to Tourach, respect.
4:05 "deathtouch means it can trade with absolutely anything" First Strike has entered the chat.
First strike, indestructible, damage prevention, protection; lots of creatures ignore deathtouch.

man the art on Sign in Blood makes me flinch every time I see it
Basal Thrull is the best just for its horrifying artwork.
This is completely off topic, but the joke came to me. You often find Teeka's Dragon on Twitch because he has Rampage: Fortnite.

Good old Hymn to Tourach days. Add some Hypnotic Specter and off ya' go.

5:35 a land that enters with *10* ice counters
Very close battle at the top, only 8 points separating 1st and 3rd! The podium order could look very different even a few months from now.
It’s wild to me that Victim of Night isn’t a multi-format staple with a ton of points

NGL I had no idea there was a creature type for Aetherborn
Dude aetherborn Vampire is ANNOYING AF to deal with lol
Most surprising part is that no black knight and that there was only 2 rare cards…with most the list being uncommons.
Nice to see Fallen Empires as the best
I was surprised how many points these cards needed to get on this list. The bars are set high here.
Bloodghast still one of the most consistent and top performers in all of its types
The other funny thing to me about Hymn to Tourach is that it probably has more points than every other card in its set *combined*.
"Fallen Empires is the worst set ever."
"It has Hymn to Tourach in it."
"Oh right well nevermind then I guess it's great."

Where do you get the hi-res background images?
there has been some discussion at the fringes of the Pauper Format Panel about un-banning Hymn in Pauper, but I doubt it'll happen
Sounds like a pretty bad idea to me.
I can remember playing when fallen empire came out, either 4 hymm to Tourach in deck or you are playing wrong
re: 5:35 Dark Depths enters with TEN ice counters, not twenty.
Top ten cards with unique mana costs when?
Ooh. Good list! But it’ll
Probably be an Eldrazi fest.
Definite "unique". There's not really a "unique" casting cost anymore
@@cherry9787 For example: dismember is the only card that costs 1 generic and two black phyrexian mana, so it has a unique mana cost.
I vote for Dauthi Voidwalker at number 1. That card is brutal
Wait... wait wait wait... so the thumbnail card was indeed the number 1???? OMG
Just a heads up, the audio for this episode is a little off and echo-y.
Hey it’s a number 1 card I actually own!
I don't play black often, but when I play a two-black card, it's Nether Shadow.
I rode several buried alive decks (b/w to sprinkle StP and Disenchant) to a LOT of tourney wins.

I actually like The Elderspell & Nightcreep.
You should do top 10 winning colours/colours combination in pro tour or worlds.
Dude the top 3 are in really close contention. I figured 1 would have ran away with it.
STOP THE PRESSES!!!!
The thumbnail is the #1 card!!!!
Does Sign in Blood not have points in Pauper?
Now o want to see two white mana list and compare 😅
As normal, the actual video starts at 2:04
Restricted in Standard huh, never knew that weird
Dauthi Voidwalker is also a cube all-star
If your cube is max power, yeah. If it's max fun I would not want such a miserable card in it.
Dauthi is so abscondantly pushed. Stupid card.
I'm shocked that sign in blood has no points in pauper

Ah yes. Vampire Nightwalk.
Dauthi, voidwalker.
Bile Blight is a better Echoing Decay.
Black knight 💣💥💣💥
Double black swamp

Hymn to tourach is why fallen empires is better than homelands.
Didnt Fallen Empires also had High Tide as well? Thats a very powerful card
