  • Hello lovelies!
    I wanted to share how I created my own version of Golden high flow acrylics. You will need the Gold Airbrush Medium. This works best with fluid acrylics. In this video I used both a heavier acrylic paint and a more fluid paint, just know that you will need to apply more of the airbrush medium if your paint consistency is heavier.
    Thanks for watching!

    Good tips,...you can make your qwn airbrush medium with a mixture of 50% matt or gloss medium and 50% distilled water..of course you can use tap water but using distilled water will keep your paint fungus free and you wont get that funky smell that you get from long term storage...I have been airbrushing almost 40 years now so I do know this recipe to work.

    Nice video. However, I would like to point out a few things just for clarity for those watching. What you are actually doing is extending your paint, a.k.a. making a glaze. Because you are using the Airbrush medium to do so, it is also thinning the paint to a High Flow consistency and making it able to be sprayed depending on the ratio. This is a great way to save money and something that Golden also recommends for their other color lines if cost is an issue. For instance you can extend Golden Heavy body Acrylics with their Regular Gel Gloss/Matte/Semi-gloss with out effecting the paints consistency. The important thing to remember and one of the reasons the High Flow cost more, is that it is high end paint and Golden has packed as much pigment into the formula as it will allow. When you extend your paints with mediums and gels, you will lose some of that potency and effectively reduce the amount of pigment per ounce in your mixture. If you extend it enough you will have effectively created a glaze and your dried paint film will be more translucent or transparent. Absolutely nothing wrong with doing this, just a personal choice on pigment load vs. cost savings.

      DONNA MAY-BRUNET You can also add dry pigment to increase the load yourself. Caution because all of these formulas will have a maximum load before the paint breaks down and that won't be obvious at first. It'll develop cracks and fade after it drys within a few months or so.

    I read on another site, they suggested to rinse out the applicator tips so the paint won't dry up inside the tip. And they also suggested placing a small piece of plastic wrap over the bottle opening and then screw the applicator tip on top (after washed and dried). Thank you for your video. I plan to make my own too, and this will help.

      +Chele Rutan A little bit of vaseline around the tip of the applicator & around the top of the bottle will keep the tops from gluing shut too & allow you to open/close your tips(caps) very easily.

    I don't know if you have a MIchaels there, but in the Wilton Cake Decorating section, they sell empty 6 oz bottles that all have a red nipple thing on them to keep them from drying out. I do marbling and use these for my mixed up paints. It only shows them in a 2 pack on the website, but I bought them in a round tub of either 16 or 18 bottles. They use them for candy decorating

    Add some flow aid and put a marble in the bottle. Works like magic. Flow aid need to be diluted 1:10 to 1:20 then add that to your mix.

    Hi & thanks for tutorial! I have been looking for a way to do this! I want to use them with liquitex pouring medium- which states "use with" soft body or liquid/inks acrylics. I didn't want to invest in a bunch of soft body or inks yet plus the cost is crazy! I finally figured out after much research that using the liquitex airbrush medium ( I'm use mostly liquitex products) with acrylics would work. I don't know how I missed your UA-cam! Damn! Anyway, I found it on Amazon $13.00 & it arrives tomorrow, can't wait to try it! Some people say to just add water, I'm my humble novice opinion, the density of paint color is comprised, problems with paint adherence & cracking. I have numerous examples.......trust me! I tried Flow Aid but I think I screwed it up so I'll also try that again. My only caution is that shaking paint & medium creates a lot of bubbles so stirring is the best route unless you don't mind the bubbles. Otherwise you have to wait a few+ days for bubbles to dissipate. Check out some "Pouring" tutorials they are really beautiful, messy but amazing & fun! Thanks again! ✌🏼

    I like that you are experimenting with the airbrush medium, a lot of acrylic painters use it instead of water for general thinning and brush soaking as it will not break down the polymer binders in the paints, but understand that diluting soft body paint with airbrush medium does not make a paint product with the pigment load equal to Golden's high flow acrylic. It is also a matter of pigment amount, not just how the paint flows. .Happy painting!

    • @carter3534
      @carter3534 8 років тому +3

      Another thing aritsts may want to consider is that Golden high flow acrylics also penetrate and adhere to substrates much more effectively than a soft bodied paint that's been diluted with airbrush medium.

      So do you know of any way to avoid buying the high flow acrylics? I've tried these for marbling and they are perfect but I want to try re-create this type of paint myself as it is for a commercial idea. I've tried adding diluited liquitex flow aid and golden high flow release to heavy bodied acryclic paints but it hasnt produced the same results :-( any advice would be greatly appreciated!!

    I have a tip so that you do not need to use more of the medium. If you add a little water at a time to make the paint liquid, you can then add the medium one part to one part paint, and it will run better. But this is a great video thank you so much!

      If you have flow medium, then of course you can use it. However, this video was using airbrush medium and so I commented towards the use of that. Medium is not cheap, and water is the most essential to getting your paint right. Now, that is also using heavy body acrylics. If you are using Liquitex paint that is soft body, you would use less water. But use what you have. Also, flow medium would work better with heavy body then soft, because it is made to force the flow. If you use flow medium with soft body, it could turn more watery than you want, even if you lessen the water used. Air brush medium is something you should have in your tool box anyway, because it also aids in making your own sprays, and flow medium will not work for that. Air brush medium is just a great tool. And her video was a really good one, so I really should not be the one telling this. I just know that medium of any kind is not cheap, so water is your best friend when mixing. You just do not want to use to much of it if you do not need too. Flow medium used with soft body should be less water then with heavy body though, so if you use the flow aid, keep that in mind depending upon the paint your using. I hope I could help.

    • @chelfyn
      @chelfyn 8 років тому +7

      +Zyzyzx Zyzer f you use too much water and not enough medium, then the paint will not create a stable film, and will fail to bond to the surface. You can use maybe a little water to a lot of medium, but it's not worth trying to save a little money and ruining the paint chemistry.

    • @kelymknowles1
      @kelymknowles1 8 років тому +2

      +Chelfyn Baxter Absolutely! The problem is it is really easy to add too much water and not even realize it until your painting starts flaking away. For me, The extra $.50 or $1 worth of medium is not worth potentially destroying all of my hard work so I agree w/you all the way. Save the water for clean -up and try to stick to only using medium.

    The consistency was fine... You needed to mix better and longer plus a heavy body paint from liquitex has a different binder and good pigmentation. You could mix some water tru the mix to get it more like the black

  • @cinderblockstudios
    @cinderblockstudios 9 років тому +6

    It should probably be noted (and you kinda did), that if you're using a low quality paint mixing the the airbrush medium it can cause adhesion problems on certain surfaces. Additionally student and craft paint has a lower pigment load and won't have the same vibrant color or tint strength as professional acrylics. I'm sure your method is good for your crafty projects, but for a larger more in depth piece this could cause you some problems.

    Not sure if anyone mentioned this but if you add 1 ml Flow Aid per 60 ml of mixture it will allow the paint to run even smoother and self level. I found this tip out when searching for ways to save a buck making my own airbrush medium. (2 parts Distilled Water, 1 part IPA (99% rubbing alcohol) and 1 ml retarder and flow aid per 60ml mixed) so 40ml DW 20 ml IPA 1 ml retarder and flow aid. This is also great for making washes.

    • @Elizren
      @Elizren 7 років тому +1

      Zathamiel your statements sounds interesting but a little confusing please clarify, i get confused when you say retarder then flow aid, are these two separate products.

    • @Zathamiel
      @Zathamiel 7 років тому +3

      retarder is (slo - dry fluid retarder) it lengthens the time it takes to dry to reduce tidemarks from drying. and flow aid, is to reduce surface tension allowing it to level better and recede into the nooks. together you pretty much get the airbrush conditioner. when you add it to the distilled water IPA mixture. And this can be used to thin down most anything unless the alcohol reacts poorly with that paint.

    • @owls381
      @owls381 8 років тому +3

      +Bolli24584 You don't want more than 30% water mixed with your acrylic paint. This is why you use the airbrush medium. The airbrush medium allows the acrylic paint to still bond with your canvas/surface. Water breaks down the bond, and if you use too much, you'll notice in time that your paint will begin to flake off. Who wants that when we spend hours and hours on our work?!?! Airbrush medium is the way to go for flow!

      Certainly here in the UK we pay quite a bit more than the US and they def have better ranges than us..BUT 1/2 of the joy of being an artist is experimentation and it's amazing how what we have in our kitchens doubles up as art eqip,For instance over here those GelliArts gel printing plates are hideously expensive and I've achieved some great effects from printing off one of those non stick rubbery heat proof baking sheets and they come in huge sizes,same size for an A3 would be over $80 in the UK..Also I'm a vege so use Agar Agar but gelatine would work ,if made up double strength in something like a photographic tray or even a baking tin tray with a lip edge ,then pouring the gel mix and refridgerating it makes the best print tray ever esp to use high flow inks and layering stencils etc ..just place paper or even cotton fabric on top and it works a treat.Also that polysterene sheet stuff that comes inside nasty cheap frozen pizza boxes if it's inscribed with an old biro or stylus,or cogs.wheels etc are pressed into it..again if inked up with acrylic on a child's foam roller and a medium and some burnished off to give definition with a rag or cotton wool buds if thin cotton is place on top and pressed to get air bubbles out then effects similar to an etching plate can be achieved..The Agar plates if cleaned off and stored in fridge can be used 50+times..Yep I'm 50 soon ,still poor as a church mouse but have learnt a few 'hacks' as kids say along the way:) ..Sorry it's long but it's good to share techniques xx Sophie ps if you are from the US sorry about my English ..well English spelling;)

    if you want to save more money try diluting your acrylic with plain water. i always buy thick acrylics and dilute them to get the consistency i want for each project and i haven't had any problems yet.

    Part of the trick is to get a high denticity pigmented paint, a artist level 3 type paint. This applies also to refilling paint pens too. Craft paint doesn't come close.

    Hi Serena Bee Creative!! I was just at an art store yesterday and asked what I could use to make high flow acrylic paint. The lady who works there told me to buy Golden's GAC100 Acrylic Primer and Extender. Will this work because it's not the one your using. Just curious about this choice this lady suggested to me. I didn't ask her about your Golden Airbrush mix because I just saw this video you made after I was there. Thanks in advance for your advice!

      @@owls381 Absolutely correct. All acrylic paints are slightly different so ymmv, but as a general guide, *_no_* acrylic paint should be diluted beyond an absolute maximum of 40%, as it will break down - if not immediately, then a few months down the line.
      And nobody wants that... 😔

    Golden is a professional artist quality acrylic paint. It is supposed to be thicker and is thicker than any other acrylic paint that you will find in your hobby or craft store. It also has the highest pigment load. That is why you pay more for Golden products. All of their products are Archival or Museum Quality.

      All paint is archival if kept out of direct sun light. I have ink drawings done as a kid that are over 40 years old that still look good. The ink was not professional level ink.

    Have you tried using pouring medium instead? I feel like if you are looking for paint to run maybe that will work better.
    I don’t want any paint to run, I am looking for a medium to make heavy body flow/movie easier/ better WITHOUT making the paint lighter in color/more transparent. Because glaze, flow aid, gloss gel and all those mediums that are made for making it flow better, they all make the paint more transparent…
    So, now I am looking at pouring medium and airbrush instead. But I won’t use an airbrush And I won’t do pours. I just want the one who maintain the paint the best.
    How big of a difference in color did you see in real life?

    Golden has much more pigment and has almost no binders just one simple polymerbinder , its very simple ..the secret is pigment powder, propyleen glycol (no glyserine that makes t sticky) ,kodac photoflow and pledge floor wax...., first disolve the pigment in water and alcohol 99% let it stand over night then ad the rest . Kodac photo flow just 3 drops together with the pledge floor wax that is by the way almost the same as airbrush medium Then the glycol,, the photoflow makes the water and fluids more wet and t runs better over paper and canvas the pledge has a little wax polymer in t that acts like a binder ...dont use prefab paint for this that wil not work u wil see the acrylic binders that in highflow are not useful .Then ad water to get the right flow . that is as close as it gets with household items.
