- Nostalgia-Ween comes early with this Re-Edit of the cult classic flick, Event Horizon. Does this film deserve all the recognition it gets?
Event Horizon is a 1997 science fiction horror film directed by Paul W. S. Anderson and written by Philip Eisner. It stars Laurence Fishburne, Sam Neill, Kathleen Quinlan and Joely Richardson. Set in 2047, it follows a crew of astronauts sent on a rescue mission after a missing spaceship, the Event Horizon, spontaneously appears in orbit around Neptune, only to discover that a sinister force has come back with it.

Had to Re-Edit this one to get rid of restrictions on the video. Give it a watch and let us know what you think of Event Horizon. Does this movie deserve being a cult classic?
Yep
Yes
Hey Doug love all the work You and the channel awesome crew do I'm just wondering are you still gonna be doing the twitch/UA-cam Streams Cause I really enjoy those It's cool to see you play video game video games and stuff like that Just wondering would really appreciate a response And also you remember it So we don't have to And we greatly appreciate it
Doug you have hair again lol. But seriously that sucks that you have do this.
What had to be edited? Deffo annoying for you, awesome for me having this back in my feed. GREAT episode on a classic (yes I love this goddamn) movie
I laughed out loud whenever the Captain was like "we're leaving"... "fuck this ship" just because it's a totally realistic reaction and so rare in this kind of movie.
I would say, it is basically. Great idea, mediocre execution issue.
TV Tropes calls this, "Reality Ensures"
Very much a logical reaction! LOL!
That and "nuke the sight from orbit" only reasonable way to handle that bullshit
People in the theater I saw it in lost it at "we're leaving"
*Watches log of what happened to the previous crew*
Miller: "We're leaving."
My favorite sensible reaction in a horror film.
Kinda like the guy in the first "A Haunted House" farce film, where the guy is like, "NOPE!" throws everything in the van and bolts. XD
That part is so funny!
@@kdusel1991 Because it is actually reasonable. And horror movies make us used to dumb.
This movie is a great depiction of 40k Warp travel. Which is to literally make a portal through hell to travel around the universe. It's far from safe and often ends up in ships getting lost for a long time, only to show up randomly in real space, now infested with demonic bullshit all over.
And how is that portal opened? With a machine that no one alive understands, of course. Maintained by a choir of singing cyborg infants and howling slaves chained to the floor. But how does it navigate the hell-space? A blind mutant also begins screaming while opening up the wound on his forehead revealing a lidless eye and he searches for a light cast out from the decomposing corpse of the most powerful psychic human that ever existed. What happens if the shields flicker during the travel? Obviously demons will materialize within the ship and slaughter everyone while giggling and that's getting off easy (no pun intended for you Slannesh deviants). Don't worry, if you die from a regular workplace injury, your body will be thrown out of the nearest airlock with a mumbled prayer and your pockets turned out first. And even translating from the hellspace doesn't mean you're safe- it's so inaccurate you may appear inside a star. Or a planet. Or another ship. As far as schedule, it could be days later. Or decades later, anything in between. Hell, you can even travel back in time, because that particular hellspace can be really big-time fucky. But should you arrive in one piece and near fellow humans, you're just as likely to be blasted with a torpedo the size of a nuclear submarine because the admiral was 'jumpy' and the helmsman in charge of communications was just executed at his station for failing to salute a commisar in time.
40K is so dark and twisted that it's comical.
It’s not a 40k
@@MrAjking808 I never said it was.
@@MrAjking808 actually they wanted to make a 40k movie but gw wouldn’t sell them the rights. So we got event horizon instead

@@LordCrate-du8zm That was intentional, thoug. Also, Astartes was pretty darn good too.
I agree with fishburne. "Fuck this ship" and blowing it up is the only rational response after witnessing that.
Yeah. Mimetic Monstrosities are no joke. Actually would have skipped the leaving part though. Runs too much risk of spreading the mimetic contamination.
15:21 I remember a lot of people said that Event Horizon was a better DOOM adaptation than DOOM (the movie) itself, and I frankly agreed

Haha! Nice.
Underated comment!
Such a bummer that the original version of this movie has been lost forever. This movie NEEDS a remake with the original idea of it actually seeing the light of day
There's an article online that describes some of the lost footage. It's some seriously messed-up sh@#.
Remake it with David Tennant in Sam Neill's role.
I feel like the line for gore has already been pushed beyond this threshold, though. There's plenty of movies out there now far gorier than this one was meant to be. Though, it would be interesting to see the original cut. Are you sure it's lost forever?
@@arthurtaylor2593 It wasn't just gore, it was the extreme sadomasochistic nature of the imagery that got it cut from the original. The original print was lost in the aforementioned salt mine flood, but there are rumors that a VHS of the cut content exists. Unfortunately the person who owns it refuses to release it.
They wouldn't do it justice, though. They'd pack it full of CGI effects on a micro budget. No real screenwriters, just interns and the actors would all be under the age of thirty. We would get completely robbed of the Clive Barker-esque theme of the movie entirely because hey, we gotta' sell it in China. So, it couldn't be supernatural anymore, because China won't show a film with ghosts in it. Hollywood would have to make two totally different movies in order to market it to Asia and without those Chinese dollars rolling in, they'd never bother.
The idea wasn't that hell was in space. The idea was that in trying to find a way to travel through space more easily, they accidentally created a shortcut that goes through hell.
"Hurr-durr, what if warpdrive went through hell?" That was the ENTIRE thought process behind this movie. There was nothing else.
"Hell is but a word. The reality, is SO much worse!" - Doctor Grier
@@Alondro77 Just saying "hurr-durr" is pretty lazy criticism. "Hurr-durr, what if some Italian dude made a bunch of crime? That was the ENTIRE thought process behind Godfather".
C’mon Doug, the crew was a RESCUE team. They’re not scientists and shouldn’t be expected to know theoretical physics.
And the liquid floating around was coolant, not water.
The movie is surprisingly good with all the censorship The studio did to the film. people like to shit on the film because they don't like to be introspective and actually think about what they are watching. for instance when Peters gets scared alot of people don't scream like banshees when they get scared it's mostly a quick yelp or gasp when people are genuinely scared. another thing is how Captain Miller after seeing what happened to the the crew of the Event Horizon he just deadpan says "We're leaving...fuck this ship" is the most human and logical thing to do for a person in his position regarding everything they know in the situation. it makes sense when you realize there is nobody left to rescue or even any bodies to recover.
That does not make this movie less sucky
@@collinsnider4179 In what sense?
Do we know it was coolant? I just thought the term "deep freeze" didn't mean the actual temperature inside the ship, but rather a colloquialism for the condition it was found in.
But they acted like they knew almost nothing about space travel. Like, right now, what's the lowest university degree an astronaut can have before going up into space?
These re-edits make me appreciate your work even more. Years ago, I found your channel while stuck at home due to RAI cancer treatments. Take time to heal. We'll all be here when you get back. ☺❤
Oh shit sorry you had cancer at the time.
The best theory I've heard about this movie is that's it's secretly a Warhammer 40K prequel. (Apparently the director is a fan.) The dimension the ship went to wasn't so much Hell as it was a realm of pure psychic energy and chaos full of gods of chaos, known as the Warp. It's a pretty terrible place to go, but is always visited whenever someone wants to travel faster than light. (So it's not so much that Hell is in space, but rather most people will go there while in space because FTL tech. I mean, it's usually not a good idea to go past light speed while in a planet's gravity well.) Over time, technology known as a Gellar Field would be developed so that anyone travelling through the Warp would not be influenced by the chaos beings in there on a psychic level. Thus no tearing out of eyes and such. But sadly, this movie depicts one of humanity's first encounters with the Warp, and they learn a painful lesson.
I love this.
The film also works, I think, as a Lovecraftian story as it has many parallels with his writing; a fear of space & the unknown, a belief that technology or humans would eventually breach other dimensions or draw the attention of extra-dimensional beings that are overtly hostile to human existence, and the running theme that humans, both as individuals and a collective, are horrifyingly ignorant to and insignificant in the scope of the greater universe.
WAAAGH, we don't need no stupid Gellar field
its just futuristic Lovecraftian horror, pretty easy to see why it has a cult following, epically with sam neil in it, as he has been in things like in the mouth of maddness
He was damien thorn in the final conflict as well.
A major part of its cult following comes from Warhammer 40K players. The movie's events and lore rather strongly lines up with the tabletop game's own lore and setting regarding the Warp.
It's so much so that folks like to joke about it being a prelude to Warhammer 40k.
I think about dead space too
It's funny because it can be a Warhammer 40k movie with the first travel in the warp
Yeh. That is basically it.
@@TheRezroit’s not tho lol

I don’t care what anyone says. This movie is one of the scariest I’ve seen.
Yes, it does have a cringe curve. But silent hill 2 out of context is cringe. But if you’ve got the lights off and it’s 11pm. It’s a good watch.
The sound effects in the final confrontation are straight out of 1950s Batman though. WHO the hell did that?!
Edit: to the person below saying I’m scared of the movie. No, I was when I turned it on tv, not expecting a scary movie and got something that did make me jump.
The scariest thing of all time that actually broke me to the point nothings scared me since, is the hospital from Silent Hill 3. The devs, knowing it’s the 3rd entry went out of their way to ensure they topped the previous entries (both 1 and 2s hospitals are equally amazing) but 3s…..the transition from normal to hell is god tier. I played it at 2am and it broke me. The game used its soundtrack which was essentially messed up noises to add to the horror.
Youre scared of THIS... Ha. Hahaha. Haaaahahahahahahahahaaaa!

9:22 I wish the addressed this in the movie, and the answer was “he didn’t design it to look like that.” So the entire time he’s commenting “they’ve done some serious remodeling since I was here.”
I once had a nightmare where I 'woke' up like three times. A actually good horror movie is The Others with Nicole Kidman.
The Others is top 5 horror for me. Legendary in my mind. 👍👍👍
To be honest - from the movies I've seen - the 90s and early 2000's were generally weird decades when it came to horror films - they bordered on either really ridiculous, poorly executed or oddly experimental with mixed results. On that note, turning round and saying "fuck this shit" after seeing that video clip is perhaps the most natural and mature way to react in that situation, as opposed t "something killed a buncha people on this abandoned ship in the middle of space - lets ignore the warning signs and carry on checking it out."
18:25 that evil shrug gets me every time 7:58 also the fake out dreams thanks for the re-up load
Its popularity can be summed up in one word... Warhammer.
My husband introduced me to this movie because, to him, it is set in the warhammer universe
Why does UA-cam suck so much that they have to keep re-uploading these videos.
Helen Lovejoy: "THINK OF THE CHILDREN"!
It's still up though...
It's because of GEMINI!😱 Ai DOOM!🫣
Especially considering how wonder bread the comedy on this channel is. At least it _used_ to be better. Now, you can tell who they vote for by all the virtue signaling jokes.
Because they were caught advertising to children, so they blamed the content creators put restrictions on them and then continue to advertise to children.
I think folks have to remember this is the same guy that made Resident Evil and its sequels. I wouldn’t put out hope that there was ever a “good version,” just a longer one.
Eh. The first two Live-Action _Resident Evil_ Movies were alright.
8:10 I used to have those reoccurring nightmares where i thought i woke up but didn't and was still in a nightmare. That sucked so much... even when i finally woke i was never really sure for the first few minutes.
I loved the concept , we always think that going through a wormhole will make the stars brighter and then appear on the other side of the universe, but we never thought that by doing that we could reach hell instead. That's brilliant !
My friends and I watched it for the first time last Halloween. It was really cheesy, and not particularly scary, but we had a good time with it. Also, I’m a big Warhammer 40K fan, and this was partially inspired by 40K, so it was fun seeing something similar to that universe’s take on Hell in a movie.
It was scarier for the late 90s, but yeah... it hasn't aged well. But it's a great time capsule all the same! 🙂
I mean, as we saw from Dead Space and its atmosphere, and early German Expressionism, style vs logic IS a thing.
Like Cabinet of Dr Caligari, no the buildings shouldn’t be jagged, but it was emphasis. Door teeth works, maybe not the hallway and strongly debating the ball.
But mood can be established based on style and not be 100% logical.
Don’t forget about the movie M
You're both essentially referencing film noir, but you're both no less right, imho! I'm no expert, but I think you've nailed the point of those scenes. It's not supposed to be logical, just "cool." Or, better said, "suggestive."
And before you at me (lol), I guess technically Caligari is more expressionism or surrealism (or both), not noir. But, I think it also crosses genres as well. Great film!
@@arthurtaylor2593 yeah. Why the critic was a bit harsh. No the teeth weren’t needed, but added atmosphere. The other things, fair game.
It’s a balance between real vs expression.
I remember seeing it on TV, & it still delivered.
I just remember the trailer showing before Face/Off, to be met by a collective “meh” in the theater. That’s right, that movie didn’t appeal to the refined palette of a crowd that was about to watch f’n Face/Off.
Warhammer 40k fans consider this a prequel to all of 40k
Let's be honest with ourselves. This movie does the ghost ship premise better than actual Ghost Ship.
I like this movie, with all its faults
But yeah, a shame all the edited parts that got lost.
Who knew Re-Edits could be so violent?
Love these re-edits! They're amazing! Hope the fatigue is getting better doug. Wish You all the Best 🙏🙏
You didn't have time to watch it
One reason I think it got popular was the popular fan theory that it was in the same universe as Hellraiser. I'm a huge fan of Clive Barker, so I can see a lot of similarities.
Event Horizon deserves this!
The movie is loved because of what was clearly there but yanked out of the film by studio meddling. There is so much potential here that the fans give it the benefit of the doubt and see the good movie behind the stripped down "meh"-fest that most people think it is. That and I'm a huge warhammer 40k fan and it's BASICALLY a 40k movie.
love your videos man thanks for the fun
Genuinely surprised how much shade got thrown on this one. Granted I haven't watched it in ages but I remember the zombie/cannibalism scene being the most memorable part. I want to say there was a STNG episode that was strikingly similar to this movie. I like the idea of a space crew going crazy, everyone dying, and an unwitting group of people getting thrown into it and have to unpack the mystery.
It was too much of trying to find fault for the purpose of making a video. There's making fun of faults, and then there's making up faults to make fun of them.
I've had the dream-within-a-dream happen eight straight times in one night before finally, ACTUALLY waking-up. It was one of the worst nightmares I've ever had. Left me really paranoid for a few hours, exhausted, afraid to go to sleep for a few days.
same, it's really exhausting
I've had it about 4 layers deep and when I finally woke up I wasn't sure what was real anymore
You are one of the most passionate channels nowdays
Honestly fuck this ship, we're leaving is a perfect response.
Atleast my response lol
I remember when I first saw the movie, I found many of the horrific spectacles fairly unnerving. Then, the movie copped out to the lamest of all cop-out twists by resorting to the cheap and erroneously cliched "The ship went to hell" approach, and that immediately killed the fear factor for me.
At least Pandorum managed to bolster the horror aspect by coming up with an original explanation that was not only clever, but also made sense.
This movie scared the crap out of me when I was younger. Not a horror movie person at all, and I see the silliness you pointed out but i legit had nightmares…
I don't think I had literal nightmares, but this did freak the heck out of me when it came out. Very good visuals for the time!
No matter what anyone says, Fisburnes line, " We're leaving! ", is such a perfect real response in that moment. Probably because that is what any of us would also say in that same situation. Also I still like this movie. Is it slow. Yes. Is it boring. Yes. Does it make sense. No. Do I love it for some odd reason. Yes.
There is a lot of people that think this is a warhammer 40k unofficial prequel: The story of the first travel through the immaterium before the invention of the Gellar Field.
Thanks for doing this Doug!!
Did you know people like to think that event horizon is a Warhammer 40k prequel
They reshot and rewrote most of Event Horizon because the studio thought it was too scary, too disturbing and too gory. They had to redo the entire film after they finished filming the first time. The original cut has been lost, I believe I heard it was in a fire and the only section of the original cut was the end scene where Fishburne's character saw clips of his crew being tortured in Hell.
"Too scary"... for a horror film? I thought that was the point
Actually it looks like I got nothing. It looks pretty cool.
Ah, old Nostalgia Critic. Always a good time.
U know a channel is good when I watch videos about a movie I have never and will probably never see

Thanks, this is a welcome monday night distraction
I know I got into the movie because a lot of people said it is like the unofficial prequel to Warhammer 40k, and I can’t say I don’t see their point.
I saw this movie when it came out. Walked out of the movie at the end thinking how lazy can you get with all the crap you raided from Alien, Aliens, Hellraiser, etc. There legit was no creativity what wasn't borrowed from another movie.
I actually saw the un-edited version earlier in life. When I saw this movie again later I swore I remembered it being more disturbing then I remembered, because let me tell you, it was NOT like this version. The original version genuinely made me disturbed and think TWICE to actually re-watch this later to see if I could handle it. I do wish they would release it again with no edits, because I do think Doug is right. The edited out scenes DID make it more impactful from what I remember. Though I have to admit this would legitimately become a dare movie to watch if they released an un-edited version.
If I remember correctly, the cut scenes were lost, due to the salt mine they were stored in being flooded.
@@STRAKAZulu Generally we never know. Unicorn scene from Blade Runner was discovered by chance.

Event Horizon scared the shit out of me the first time watching it. The characters are crap, but they got the Alien set feeling right.
And great work on the scetches CA.
The gravity of Neptune at the surface is nearly equal to Earth. There shouldn't be anything floating.
I criticized the Doom movie for not having a portal to Hell, I'm not about to criticize Event Horizon for actually having one! Anyway, space horror with decent production value was hard to come by, and 1997 was the perfect time period for Marilyn Manson-esque edginess.
Oh god what the hell changed? I know in the tarzan re-edit you blocked Clayton getting hung which was stupid
This is the last movie i saw with my dad before he passed away. Mixed feelings on this movie. Always wonder why the last movie had to be this one.
The people who really like this movie these days are the warhammer 40k guys. It’s practically considered cannon 😅
Looks like a touch of the Warp to me.
It’s actually one of my favorite movies ever. I just love this. Watched it so many times and never had enough.
What's different in this re-edit ?
Hell in Event Horizon wasn’t “in space.” It was an alternate dimension like in DOOM. and as with DOOM it corrupts anything that comes into contact with it.
You can say whatever you want, but that was a scary movie, that movie gave me nightmares.
7:47 clip that Critical Drinker uses
I love how the captain goes from "I don't believe ANY of this!" To "The crew is dead. Your ship killed them." After Justin tried to make his nightmare visions stop by launching himself out the airlock
I rather enjoyed the movie. I'm not a horror person, don't really like that genera very much. So I guess this movie wasn't really scary, but it was creepy, which hit a good balance with me. I also enjoyed the design. I like the almost alien gothic design because it's so visually interesting. I don't think seeing something like the Enterprise's warp core would fit the vibe very well. I mean think about it, a brightly lit, mostly white room with a tube in the middle... oh scary...
Even in the future, the taps still leak.
I like this movie and I am not even sure why. Maybe because it puts the whole hell stuff in a place you can't just get away from. It also feels kinda cosmic horror, which is cool.
I mean, there are weirdly few (good) horror space movies that don't just throw aliens at the characters.
It also is scary. I mean, not in a jump scare way, but the atmosphere and uneasy feeling it builds are pretty good, I think. Despite some of its issues.
I wanted to see this movie when it was released in theaters but I was busy with college courses. I’m so glad I didn’t waste my money (or more importantly, my time!) on this flick! Thank you, Nostalgia Critic! 😊
Well then that's your fault for missing a gloriously cheesy film.
This is still my favorite opening to a video yet
The way Fishburne goes out at the end is rough, has to spend the rest of his existence in the hell dimension. He really made the ultimate sacrifice...😭
Fun fact about the film and it’s creation. It was as primarily inspired by Warhammer 40,000 by the creator of the film’s own admission (particularly it was the writer of the film).
Particularly (while he personally never gave details) the inspiration mostly comes from what happens when the Gellar Fields(a type of protection shield) fail when traveling through the Warp(aka *Literal* Hell on steroids and the *only* means humanity has of Interstellar travel).
And it is so much like 40k that some see it as a (unofficial) 40k prequel when humans first invented the Warp drive, but didn’t invent Gellar Fields yet, and this was what prompted their invention.
The Goofy sound effect at 10:05 ---> chef's kiss
They do travel in herds.....
The opening to this video is still one of the funniest things in NC history to me. It cracks me up every single time I see it.
Nostalgia-ween in March critic you shouldn't have
I don't even remember this review, can't wait to see it!!
I enjoyed this movie a lot, especial after I read a theory somewhere saying that Event Horizon takes place in the Warhammer 40k universe and everything that happened was humanity's first travel trough the warp XD
I mean, it's not awesome but out of the 50 sci-fi or horror movies that have a cult following that I don't understand, Event Horizon DEFINITELY isn't on that list. Its ideas are better than the execution but I feel it is a fun watch. Mostly to enjoy, partly to roll your eyes at it. I've seen many folks call it the greatest sci-fi horror movie ever and I feel that is pretty hard to defend. I think it's 'spiritual successor' Pandorum is a better movie overall.
1:22 That’s a way to start off a video if I’ve ever seen one.
Event Horizon is my second favorite Warhammer 40k movie.
This film has some great funny moments. Laurence Fishburne's acting out of his goddamn mind in a film that can't meet his level, Cooper is out here having the time of his life, and the immediate "fuck this, we're leaving" but the best one is that the end credits song is Funky Shit, which made me laugh so hard I forgot it was supposed to be a horror film
I just watched this movie on sunday - I love when neil is crawling through the vents and the part then the shockwave hits the ship - the cigarette never leaves his mouth the whole shot - it cracked me up
This is one those movies that I always had a love/hate relationship because even though the plot doesn’t make a lot sense, the 3 premiere actors: Sam Neill, Laurence Fishburne, and Jason Issacs give just such amazing performances that I watch movie annually just to see them all preform on screen together… this movie has one of those, “what if Pandorum was bad” qualities… where the main characters give intriguing and compelling performances but also no amount of talent, acting, and skill can really make up a bad plot…
This is basically "Hellraiser in space".
Ahhh! The 'old ' Nostalgia Critic when he used to rant and rave and carry on like a lunatic! *sigh* Boy, I miss those days!!
I kinda wanna see this movie being rebooted. I feel like the idea could be interesting if reworked
