Not quite, Eric played bishop to d3, threatening mate in 1, which white can parry with Qe4 check. If it was black to move in the position you mentioned it would indeed be mate in 1 though.

The rook checks so he has to respond to that first and if he plays Kd7 he blocks his bishop after which black plays Nf3 and there's no mating threat.
