In this video, I explore the hidden beauties of the Lucchini Gambit. This dubious, but aggressive opening variation was completely new for me and brought to my attention by twitch subscriber gmdillusion. As you'll see in this video, I delve into some of the mainlines and discover some fascinating traps and ideas. This gambit is incredibly rare at master level play, so I think it has great potential as a surprise weapon. Here is the lichess study where viewers can explore the lines further:

We all know what the true beauty of this opening is, after sacking the Queen to promote to another Queen you simply say to your opponent, "Still theory"
Hit'em with the Finegold 😂
“Given that everyone’s learning the Stafford these days...”
*smirks and sips tea*
Why don't you actually try to improve in chess rather than playing cheap traps lmao. Get a grip.

@@TyJoneZs well stop guessing and actually think for a second lmao.

This looks like a good opening against engine cheaters. They'll play the engine top recommendation but in this line the engine is just confused
They probably will Play c3 in the italian
engine does not play ng5 it castles instead saying that the position is equal
Haha 😂
Actually bishop d5 is best notpawn d5 then whiteis not loosing
Just castle - white can keep a significant advantage without having to go into the complications
The engine analyzing this sounds like Ben Finegold. "I don't know who's better. Leave me alone. I'm an old man. Wahhh!"
"We get to a position where we're only down a pawn, with white's king on c4."
Okay, I'm convinced.
JediNxf7 GOD DAMN IT! XD
Yk, this could be a result of a devastating middle game attack but at the same time it could be a description of a drawish endgame lol

Analysed this a bit with Stockfish, if white plays Qc4 on move 19 instead of taking on e5 (13:08), there is an even crazier line where you sac the queen, promote and sac the queen again:
19. Qc4 Nf6
20. d6 Nd5+
21. Kb3 exd3
22. Qxd5 Be6
23. Nc4 d2+ (If we take the queen it's losing because after white takes our queen with the bishop, the rook protects the back rank)
24. Nxe3 d1=Q+ (we still can't take the queen because after Kc2 all the promoting squares are protected)
25. Nxd1 Bxd5 (now the Knight no longer protects f1, allowing us to take the queen with check and promote)
There are better lines for white after Qc4, just thought this one was hilarious.
This is why youtube has the comment section!
HA! You should update the comment to say 'you sack the queen, promote and sack the queen again, then promote again'.
Do you see any poisonous lines for black after this 19.Qc4 variant? I was studying the position, and although the engine gives black an edge I see no way to take advantage for black.
@@peteryonts665 after 19. Qc4 Nf6 the threats are Nxd5+, exd3(followed by Nxd5+ if Queen takes, winning the queen eventually) and Be2(attacking the pinned piece again). Only move for white that doesn't lose on the spot, is to play Nxe4, stopping all the threats, which we will take back with the knight Nxe4+(The Queen sac line doesn't work here, because white can take back with the queen, covering the promotion square). The problem for white is, even with perfect play, the white king is stuck in the center of the board, even though you're still up a piece, the knight on h8 cannot be saved and will be captured eventually, and then there is the f2 pawn, which probably will promote at some point.
LOL I went through your line on Stockfish too. So sick that the Knight takes two queens in a row and white is still losing lol
how ironic that such a crazy position came out the "very quiet game" opening. maybe this should be called the giuoco fortissimo
edit: the move is 4...f5, but maybe it should be notated "fffff" :^)
Fortissimo!
This comment is underappreciated.

@@francismartinevans O-O is an excellent response for white, but the evaluation from Stockfish is deceiving. A line that leads to *at least* equality for black is 5.O-O Nf6 6.Nc3 d6 7. Bg5 Na5! 'Dubois Variation' - more like dubious variation!
I was very confused for a good minute when lichess showed that name to me
12:30 Looks like a GO position
This is such a cool gambit. You look like you're losing for the first half, then start taking everything back with forced moves and a much better position.
Meanwhile in some juniors chess tournament one of the kids plays this abominations after facing the gucci piano and the jury is like 'huh?'
This was super cool to see, I’m gonna try that for sure.
Wow this is amazing! Thanks Eric, very intresting analysis

What a gambit, Eric! Ty for making a vid about it :D
Dude! I was literally trying to look into the Italian Game, Giuoco Piano and Giuoco Pianissimo just recently! I didn't realize this gambit was hidden in the list of subsequent moves! I gotta remember this one!
this was such a crazy analysis
"To put this in human terms" lmfao
Man you have to play it once! Please. That was sooooo epic. Loved it
Just had my first win using lucchini gambit. Thanks, eric
Omg I wish you had the extra stuff into the video, the promote to the knight is insane
Reminds me somewhat of the Traxler Counterattack. Nice video! :)
thanks for helping make chess more interesting and motivating me to try new stuff everyday

Eric, I was able to play this gambit recently. To be fair the first time I played it a messed up the move order but second time was a charm.

I actually played this exact game with my friend.. and he had no idea what hit him ..At the time I did not know a name for this opening.. this was so much fun..
That is a crazy line. Might have to mess around with that.
There was a novel from 1966 Van Goom's Gambit - opponents were dying with heart attack during play ... I think this is it :)
This is straight up insane
What an insane gambit...can't wait fir you to play this in a live game
Pinning from behind is so beautiful.
Reminds me of a Traxler Gambit because after white over extends with the knight we hit with Qh4.
Love stuff like this
I just played this opening in an OTB rapid tournament and won the game against a stronger opponent! Thanks for the video!

Eric, this reminds me of a chigorin game against Victor Knorre in a weird way. Black gambited a lot pf material but just opened up the kingside and butchered white.
I play the Italian as white pretty often. People started using this against me about a week ago and I hadn’t seen it before that. Thanks for posting
You know Eric is gonna like this one when the Line is called Dubious Variation

Dubois is a french surname I believe. It's surprisingly close though to dubious!

I immediately tried it out when I saw it
I tried playing the trap in one of your more recent videos since nobody accepts the stafford at 1400 elo, but turns out nobody accepts the knight d4 trap either. Perhaps this one will bring more luck
Well, not anymore...
I've actually accepted a Stafford gambit in rapid just now, it's pretty fun when you find a way to stop all of black's initiative and stabilize the board. Don't know if I'm able to find those moves in blitz though since I took like a minute to find f3 and c3.
Everyone is wise to the Stafford now. Everyone but Twitch chat, that is.

Throw away all the pieces, sac 1 of everything for a winning position, it's brilliant!
It’s fucking incredible still finding moves in chess that confuse engines
That's so crazy!
It sacrifices every piece, but I'm good at finding gambits that sac the king too.
I really wanna see it in action in your next videos!
Old video I know, but the Rousseau gambit (and of course Lucchini Gambit) is the only gambit I know decently, and with my low rating it surprises everyone. Of course I'm familiar with other gambits, but not to good detail.
Already waiting for a video where this happens in game
So cool!
