I am definitely a noob at chess, but today I had a game where I sac'd the queen to win a bishop and a knight and because of this move I later had the open diagonals around the enemy king and developed rooks first as black. In the end I blundered the mate move cause I had 10 sec left on the clock. But I checked for the correct move and it was indeed a mate. Oh and also because he took my queen with his own queen across the board she got stuck in a corner and never left it afterwards. :D
Lol yep. On move 1 the eval bar for stockfish goes from 0.0 after white plays D4 straight into +1.7 after black plays E4 so you already know it's a great opening.
Man I love Eric Rosen, I think his approach to the game is a lot of fun. For a mere mortal who is not aiming to achieve any fancy titles but play chess exclusively for fun, I find him to be the best source for discovering fun and perhaps a bit arcane ways to play chess. That is in no way to diminish his qualifications to teach serious chess for players who are attempting to become titled players. But yeah, I appreciate the hell out of him and his content.
Not really, if you are performing open heart surgery on a kid for example, it would be really hard to have fun without doing something bad. I challenge you to find me a way to do it.
I got so tired of seeing the Englund in blitz that I made a point of sitting down and learning the lines. Now I look forward to seeing it and banging out the responses to it so fast that the Englund player gets disturbed and slows down.
I can really see this opening being invented by someone who missed that after Bxc3+ you can block with knight and who just thought they were winning a piece
Don't know who you are, don't know why I'm here, haven't played chess in probably 30 years. Found this incredibly interesting, soothing and calming voice, thought process behind each or potential move. Have subbed and look forward to watching more videos 👍👍
It’s honestly not a bad opening against lower rated players. I absolutely loved this opening from around 1000-1400. I still play it from time to time as a 1700. Definitely very underrated
There's a nice trick after 4.Qb4+ white can play Nc3 with an "oh no my bishop" and if black takes on f4 white can play Nd5 with a fork on the queen and c7 pawn.
You can, but after 7. ...Kd8, 8. Nxa8 Nxe5, black reclaims the gambited pawn and white's corner knight is as good as dead the moment black gets a chance to move his b pawn. possibly taken by the queen, but even better if black gets the chance to finachetetto his bishop in the process of attacking the knight, supporting the queen already on the long light sqaure diagonal. And until then, that knight isn't going anywhere. gaining the rook isn't worth the effective loss of both the bishop AND the knight.
You said bishop d2 was probably the best move, but isn't knight c3 better, because after queen captures bishop there is knight d5 with an attack on the queen and after the queen moves to e4 or smth, the knight just takes on c7 with a fork on the rook? It seems the engine also suggests this.
Can you please make a video showing the traps and theory around the Englund Gambit! Would be really nice since not much is available on youtube about the opening.
I once got 4 minor pieces for my queen. I allowed my opponent to take my queen b/c I had a forced line where we would end up trading queens and two pieces. But my opponent got greedy and thought he could keep his queen so I wound up trading my queen for all of his bishops and knights. He resigned two moves later.
11:24 White seems to win material after *15.Rc3* (15...Nc3 16.Qa1 Re8 17.Qc3 Nd3+ 18.Kd1 Nf2+ is unclear), but Black might have a strong _zwischenzug_ in *15...Re8!?* after which there are mating threats in some lines based on *...Nd3+*
at 11:10 wasn't there a way for black to take the b3 rook without losing his bishop? if the sequence went Ne3, Qe2, Nc2+, Kd1, and Nd4 forking Queen and Rook? edit: obv he'd lose his kngiht but rook is worth more to take
It must be great being that good at something. Look at this guy, so chill and passionate about this game, utterly demolishing the average joe and making it look pleasantly simple in the process
11:23 castling is bad no? Rxc3 Knxc3 Qa1 should just be winning after knights are pinned, and if the knight on c3 moves the white queen takes knight on e5 and can't be pinned on e8 bc its mate
I have a line for you move 7. When Qc3 white moves Rxb4 takes bishop. You remove the defender on the queen so bishop can take without loss of your queen and ends with the knight under threat instead. It evens the baord
Can someone explain why at 17:46 white didn’t go king h1 instead of sacrificing the queen, it doesn’t seem like there is a way to checkmate white from that position
10+5 is really nice I love to play it! I need to calculate some times and since I don't really know theory much and can't really see sacrifices that easily it's a sweet spot of thought and intuition for me.

2:57 the best move here is actually to knight to c3, giving up the bishop, if black takes, you can fork his queen with the c2 pon and win the rook
No, it’s not actually. In the queen sacrifice position white has +3 advantage, but if you give up your bishop for the rook huge advantage will be gone
I really enjoy your calm demeanor under time pressure !!!
I LOL'd when he said "or triceratops" 🤣
His insanely calm approach... God he is so impressive!!
Huge respect to Aman for bringing this unbeatable variation in Englund Gambit.
at 2:25 can't you do knight c3, blocking the queen and then after queen takes bishop we do knight d5 trapping the other rook with knight c7?
I don't play the opening, but I think it's roughly equal since black gets two pieces and the e5 pawn for the rook, so yeah I guess that's a move
