“The beard is going to come from the skin” 😂😂😂 no, a hair follicle 🤦‍♂️ it’s built from specific proteins.
Misnomers; oil enhances hair growth- oil helps split ends stick together and creates a smoother looking long hair, and people got bamboozled into thinking it effects a hairs growth. The only thing that effects a hairs growth is steroid medication. Your diet and cleanliness play much more into beard development than any after product. Waxes are amazing for shaping. This guy is a sham.

Recommendation that really helped me is to give it 3 months. Before that point your beard isn’t growing correctly and will look all kinds of wrong. Use the oils like they suggest and struggle through the itchy phase but whatever you do don’t use a razor or scissors to style it. Beyond that point it’ll grow more evenly and you can style it

I carry a super nice stainless steel comb in my pocket to comb out my beard throughout the day. I can vouch for the terrible effects of cheap plastic combs on beards. I've bought expensive beard products for years, but Jojoba, shea butter, and Almond oil are cheap when you buy them online. I can get over a year's supply for what I used to pay for a few ounces of the expensive stuff and you can see the results in my profile photo. I use the oils just like in the episode. I also melt the shea butter and mix in some of the oils to make my own balm, which I then use exactly like you showed in the episode. I skip the beeswax for my beard because it made it a little more stiff than I like, but you could melt in some beeswax with the shea butter/oil mix to make a styling balm if that's to your taste.

I am curious though-combs were the only thing discussed. I'm curious, and when/if the Bearded Savant shows back up, I'd like to know about brushes vs combs. One better than the other, or are the for different purposes? Already learned somethings I should change-I'm open to more!

I’d like to add to this that a good shave will lead to a good beard, use a good soap and a quality razor and take the time to do the hot towel and really treat yourself with your shave. I use either a single edge razor or the old style safety razor with a lanolin soap. I strop the blade because apparently my beard hair is made of wire and it’s the only way I can get it to cut evenly.
But I digress, put in a little effort making a nice shave experience before letting the beard grow and it will save you irritation.

My girlfriend was surprised at the amount of stuff I have for my beard. A comb made from horn, a brush made from boar's hair, several different brands of oil, beard soap with donkey's milk and a lovely mustache wax that smells like peaty whiskey.
However, I've tried balm once and found it way to grimy, or greasy, all throughout the day. Is that just the wrong brand? Is that what it's supposed to feel like? Is that the effect of using too much?

Sounds like your balm was either full of stuff that doesn't absorb readily into the hair and skin or you just used too much. With mine, you can feel the balm in the beard for about a hour to an hour and a half and then it kinds just feels soft but not greasy. (I also live in the Mountain West, so extremely low humidity is a given around here.)

I have been using oil for years now, all thought I don't use it every day like I probably should. I have tried balm before and was kinda meh with it as it seemed to form little balls in my beard latter, which sometimes oils do that too but not anywhere near as much. I have a bone comb from Grimfrost, but I do want to get a wooden comb also. Might actually just make one, would be a fun little project. A month or so ago I shaved down my 4.5in goatee and cheeks to long stubble to reset and grow a full beard back out and maybe try to go with a new style. I'm around 2in now full and think but it seems to stopped growing or at least slowed down way more than it normally does once it gets some length. I guess it could also be me actually paying attention to it and waiting were as before I didn't pay attention to it and I would just realize how long it got. One of these days I want to actually go to a barber to get it styled/shaped and then just try to maintain it for a while before going back, but I'm lazy and driving to a shop and meeting new people is harder for me than just doing it myself.

Yes you can, me and many many others have grown beards with the help of Minoxidil and dermarolling. 1. How would you advise managing a beard and wearing a mask for people with longer beards. I'm in the 6" range and the mask line/smile from wearing a mask all day is rough.
    2. Heat and beards. I have experimented with using a heated comb to help straighten my VERY curly beard and have been wondering if that's just destroying my beard. I like the straight look on me though compared to the curly look

As an research science student for endocrinology (hormones) Id like to mention the effects of minoxidil
No hate towards the dude, I really enjoyed the video so far but I greatly disagree with what he said about patches.
There are a plethora of peer-reviewed scientific papers which show minoxidil can do wonders. If you have a patchy beard or can't grow one id like to suggest reading about it. Not everyone chemically responds to minoxidil but around 60-80% of people will respond to it.
Its used as a simple cream or liquid you rub on your face, it can also be taken orally for general hair growth or certain heart pressure problems.
I do suggest researching it before using it cause it can have side effects. Minoxidil can lower blood pressure and cause acne along with some other possible side effects.
It worked amazingly for me but I don't think anecdotal evidence would hold much validity.
The original hairs that grow will be thin and fall eventually but they will be followed by normal thick hairs. After proper treatment, the accelerated beard growth and new hairs will remain for life without you doing anything and without any side effects from minoxidil.

Tip for folks with very dry beards, as a dry-bearded man with a beard to my collarbone:
If you want a one-stop shop, a blend of shae butter and coconut oil does wonders, melt them together and let them harden again. I'm sure this would work well with coconut oil as well, but this works well for me and I can add scented oils to the blend.
Also, balms that contain lanolin are incredible for absorbing into the hair and feeling great.
Personally, I scrub my beard with just water almost daily to remove any debris, but only hit it with a shampoo or co-wash every couple weeks. Any more often and I experience brittleness and breakage.
    Hope this helps someone!

You haven't touched on the topic of electric beard trimmers (or scissor trimming for that matter).
My favorite and current beard trimmer no longer holds a charge and I'm shopping for another one, or repair of the old one. NONE of the current models do what my old Phillips Norelco T770 can do in a ONE PIECE unit. At a minimun, there are 5 or 6 ATTACHMENTS to be lost, confused, or stored. My T770 had ONE piece (plus the charger). ONE G. D. piece!
Regardless, I have two modes of trimming.
First is "the muzzle" where I trim the mustache, lower lip, and the parts that connect... essentially around the mouth, but not the chin, to a short level (setting 3 to 5 out of 10 on my trimmer).
Second is the remainder of the beard. I like the sideburns shorter (level 5) with the rest of the beard cascading down smoothly from there.
Sadly, with the demise of the battery on my trimmer, I'm left with "Einstein beard" with LOTS of flyaways. Think of Einstein's crazy electrocuted hair sticking out every which way.
I'm NOT gonna combat THAT with a pair of scissors!!! Advice?!

Curly beard is generally speaking a good thing in beard land. Looks fuller and easier to style… from my experience anything that adds heat to the beard is likely to cause dandruff and dry skin.
My advice as a curly bearded guy, oil your beard daily, loose comb to encourage it to be a bit straighter, and if it’s long enough, braiding it can be a wonderful relief and quite stylish. Everyone loves a viking!
      Best of luck

Interesting Jojoba fact: Oil from Sperm Whales was used right up until the early 70's in surprising things like satellites and transmissions because of its properties under extreme high and low temperatures and it only stopped being used once a complete ban on the importation of sperm oil was instituted. This left industry in a lurch and for years vehicles suffered from high numbers of transmission failures due to underperforming nonwhale oil-based lubricants until someone discovered that the seeds of the simple jojoba shrub produced an oil that not only met but exceeded the specifications of sperm oil.
