For those wondering I believe the tattoo translates to "with great potential" or "great with power" But that's just a very brief search online.

After getting a few tattoos, the best comparison is to an “electric cat scratch”. You mainly feel the vibration and then the precise sting. That said the pain goes away almost as soon as the needle leaves the area, and then it’s just a bit sore.
DUDE! That's exactly how I described it. Basically a neverending cat scratch though certain areas are much less painful. After 5 hours it started getting BRUTAL though. My artist did the shading first and the linework last so by that point the single needle work was KILLING ME, especially cause he was going over the same spots he already did.
As soon as it leaves the area it feels like a sunburn that got slapped.
Depends on who you are and where it is I guess, but this is probably the best description. I’ve been shot with a tattoo gun without any ink (I was curious but had no intention to get a tat nor or any ideas at the time, probably not the most responsible thing to do but it was all done safely so yeah), and it felt how you describe, but I’ve heard a lot of people say it feels completely different, usually when they get specific areas tatted like boney areas and the face.
But yeah, perfect description from what I’ve experienced.

My first one on my forearm I'd describe as getting a back scratch from somone with nails a little too long

I just have to mention how gentle the tattoo artist was on Jason. It did not look even remotely painful at all. I've been hammered on by a tattoo artist and it is not fun at all, but I'm glad that Jason had such a pleasant first tattoo experience!

That explanation of why tattoos don't fade is incorrect, I'm afraid.
First: the ink should not go into the fatty tissue below the dermis. If the tattoo artist is trying to do so, they're going too deep and causing their canvas unnecessary pain. The ink should go into the dermis, as it did with Jason.
Then it's time for the immune system to do its part. Every puncture of the tattoo needle(s) alerts the immune system. The ink is a foreign material and needs to be disposed of, or encapsulated to prevent any harm. Both macrophages and fibroblasts absorb the ink particles. A lot of these cells then go back into the lymphatic system and the ink they've absorbed is disposed of. But a lot of cells remain in the dermis, with the ink inside them. This is the ink you can see. Once these cells die, they're absorbed by new cells, ink and all.

His description of the feeling is pretty spot on imo. My first tattoo is in almost the same spot and it was basically as described. A bit of vibration from the tattoo gun and the slightest poking feeling where the needle was.

The pain gets worse if you get something bigger and/or more complex where the tattoo artist has to pass over the same area more than just one time, like shading or working with several colours.
Especially after couple of hours and the artist stop for the lunch break. You begin to build a scab and it goes right back into it after the break. Ouch.
also areas close to bones tend to be more painfull as a whole then areas with alot of fat, so i imagine getting a tattoo on your shin is alot worse then one on your calfs for example
Magnum shading needles are some painful things together with the pushing or dragging effect to get the ink in at the right level. That was the only part of my tattoo that made me wince and feel like my bicep was being carved up like a chicken.
I find that after 4 hours of wiping the raw wound, that paper towel tends to be the worst. Not a problem with smaller tattoos, but with big ones it feels like your skins being wiped off for the last half.

when i got my tattoo i initially had trouble with the pain, but then i noticed that the artist tattooing me had an old picture of president jimmy carter on the wall. so i focused my attention on it and it did help me deal with the pain and put me in a very zen like state.i guess i have to give thanks to jimmy for helping me get through my first tattoo.
In my minimal experience, pain is also dependant on the one doing the tattooing. Several months after getting a less than satisfying tattoo, I went to a different artist try to fix it.
The difference in pain was night and day. The first was bad but far from unbearable, but the fix barely felt like anything at all.
When I asked about it, the second artist said something like "Different people's skin will take ink more easily than others. A lot of artist will really dig in, ensuring that the ink will stick regardless of the person's skin condition. It's not wrong, but it's not always necessary." Apparently my skin takes ink relatively easily, so a lighter touch is acceptable.
I actually got my first tattoo recently and yeah that describes the pain it depends on your pain tolerance but like a shot if you don't think about it you will be fine

I liked how it felt. Its hard to describe though, one time a friend asked me and I told her it "hurt but in a good way" I told her I couldn't describe it any better than that
I have three tats so far. I plan on getting more. The arms don't hurt so much and other places hurt a lot. It comes down to pain tolerance and where your getting the tattoo.

had a really good family friend that did all of my father and mother's current tattoo work, he's since left the business due to financial concerns (basically the guy couldn't ever do the work for what he felt was a reasonable price, he always didn't wanna charge a lot because of how much he enjoyed it) and it's really fascinating to see how similar the general attitude of the artist is regardless of who it is or where they're from
Tip your artist; if you start to get the "itch" to get another, you'll be glad you did. It's always good to build up a relationship with your artist that you really like the style of, and if they're skilled, they'll often work with you to create a unique piece.

I do wish there were more questions about how to choose your tattoo artist -- red flags from a customer point of view, etc. That's really the first thing I need to know before getting a tattoo.
Hit me up, I’ll do my best to answer whatever questions you have.
I'd say customer reviews are number 1. If the reviews aren't overwhelmingly positive go somewhere else. Second go in person and talk to someone. Good tattoo shops have staff that are helpful and knowledgable. At the same time have a look at the shop cleanliness. Waiting area should be tidy and clean, if you can see workstations they should look tidy as well. It should smell sterile like a hospital. When you discuss your with your artist make sure they engage with what you want. If you have a specific design in mind a definite green flag is that they really get into talking about it, maybe having suggestions, they ask questions. This shows that they genuinely care about the work they are doing and will put care into the end product. If instead they are very nonchalant about it in a manner that suggest they really dont care, that could be a red flag suggesting that they aren't going to put the care into it that it deserves. But sometimes this may just be their personality, my first tattoo was buy a guy who was quite direct and straight to the point and the resulting tattoo was fantastic, so again go back to step one, because a bad tattoo artist will have bad reviews. Another red flag is an artist who is rude or snobby about your choice of tattoo. At the end of the day it is your body and you decide what goes on it. Suggestions and tweaks are definitly helpful, such as cleaning up lines or making adjustments so that the piece will heal nicely and look good years down the line. However, never stick with an artist that acts sobby about the design itself.

To those curious. Imagine a cat scratch with vibration for outlines, and really warm prickly feeling for colouring.
Boney areas, tendon areas, inside of your elbow, and thin skin areas like elbows are going to be more painful.
So start with fatty arm areas or even where he got his.
The markers we use in the OR have an ink called gentian violet. It stays on the skin pretty well despite rubbing down with a prepping solution to make the surgical site "surgically clean"; reducing amount of transient flora found on skin surface - you can't sterilize living tissue.
The only way we can get the ink off is with rubbing alcohol. Though only time that happens is when we're having to change the incision site parameters

I swear to god, gentian violet is the purple devil. It’s definitely the same stuff on the back of thermofax sheets. And back when purple tattoo pigment was a rare novelty, on at least one occasion, Sailor Jerry convinced people that a handful of gentian violet crystals was that pigment… only to melt them out of existence and stain that other tattooer’s hands with a solid spray of isopropyl alcohol.

I’ve been wanting a tattoo for years now and I’ve changed my mind on what I want a couple times but I’ve finalized a design I want. And I haven’t gone through with it for a couple reasons but I’m at a point where I have the money, self autonomy and I don’t care about any criticisms anymore so I’m hoping to get it done right before my birthday next month. So this video is very timely for that 😅

Your adrenaline will run high, and you'll overheat.
If you're feeling hot or faint, it's perfectly okay to ask for a 5 minute breather.
Go to the bathroom, ask for a cup of water...etc.
Something will jump out you at one point, not like a serial killer jump out, but something will jump out. The knowing & seeing of the tattooing process diffuses any worries about the tattooing itself and hearing it be described in various pain relatable terms is good and is one less obstacle to think about. After that, it's just the cash and design. As for my tattooing, I'll describe it as being shaved with a blunt, electrified razor but the shading was like being carved like a chicken, unpleasant but passable. Like a number of comments have said, you can take a break, drink, stretch limbs and deep breathe anytime you need, just ask as you need to be comfortable.

@@reggiep75 oh absolutely. I’m getting it done by a friend so that should help ease a lot of anxiety. It’s gonna be a relatively small one on my forearm and from what I’ve heard that area feels like your arm hairs getting pulled repeatedly which sounds like a drag but nothing too bad. I’ve had deep tissue massages and acupuncture done before which were uncomfortable and painful to an extent so I feel like I’m ready but it’ll be a new experience for me so fingers crossed

Have you thought about merging the two together? Maybe the eyes of the firebug symbol as the warlock symbol, or merging the "eye" of the warlock symbol as the head of the firebug, then making the spikes above merge with the firebugs flames, and then adding the bottom points at the bottom, or something. It's hard to describe the image I'm thinking of, but those two symbols do have similar shapes, so they could work together.
Of course, if you did do that, you'd have to then commit to playing a firbolg "firebug" warlock.

@@r1w3d A friend of mine hired me a couple of times to design tattoos for her. She had to shop around for a shop with artists she though would do it justice. Each time she found one, they were booked up so she had to get an appointment in advance for the first but the second they were like "Oh, just stop by any time after 3pm" or something.

"How much does it hurt" is a super common question, and as someone with quite a few tattoos I think what Michael said about the pain gravitating toward the opposite end of the spectrum from where you start is really sound.
I don't have any tattoos on any crazy painful spots like the ribs (so I hear,) or, I assume, bottom of the foot (that seems unpleasant, to say the lease,) but the best common thing I can compare tattoo pain to is probably a brush burn, like when you fell off your bike and scraped your knee. To me it feels just like that. Granted, I'm talking about tattoo pain after the ink is in and I'm walking out the door, or maybe after an hour or two.
It's hard, in retrospect, to gauge the level of pain during the procedure because endorphins, and I kind of enjoy mild pain because of endorphins. So I wouldn't really trust myself to rate the ante-procedure pain levels, post-procedure, but I can say it's really not too bad. I never quit partway, anyway.
The most important thing to consider is that pain is 100% subjective, and 100% in your head, literally. Studies have shown all kinds of _fascinating_ things about how expectations drastically influence and augment actual pain levels. So your expectations will absolutely affect your experience of that pain. If you tell yourself "OH, GOD, THIS IS UNBEARABLE!" then it's definitely gonna hurt more, just like any and all pain. If you actually slow down and kinda step back in the moment and judge the sensation honestly, detached from the experience, then you'll probably find that it's more than bearable, especially if you're really sure of the design and you really, genuinely like it, and aren't afraid on any level that you may regret it later on down the road. That kind of thing really can influence pain level, surprisingly. Brains and minds and pain are all really weird things that way.

My kinds both got tattoos a couple of years ago in memory of their mother. We flew to Indiana to have them done by their uncle’s tattoo artist. Their uncle passed away three years before that. My son’s was more elaborate and was about a three hour session, whereas my daughters took about an hour.
When Jason mentioned that his Uncle kept saying it, was it his Uncle Ben?

Thank you! I’m more than glad to offer my opinions or suggestions, but my clients are adults and it’s their tattoo to wear. Ultimately in the end of I don’t feel comfortable doing it, I don’t have to, but that doesn’t happen too often.

Much like when I got my first tattoo on the bottom of my wrist, it seems Jason also is a natural masochist in his placement choice. Lmao. I remember my artist being like "is this your first tattoo? And you want it there? You know that's gonna hurt like hell right?" I remember telling him after a couple minutes that it actually felt quite cathartic, kinda like a razor blade dragging across my skin. Ironically enough I was never a self harmer even though I had cut myself a couple times just out of morbid curiosity, but I'm kinda surprised it never stuck with how similar and cathartic the tattoo felt. 🤷🏻♀️

Like many other commenters, I recently got a tattoo (2 months ago at this moment) and I can say that it goes by way quicker than you realize, and hurts less than you'd think. Mine felt like putting an electric toothbrush (one that doesn't spin) against my skin. Felt fine, just got slightly irritating the longer it went on. But not to the point where I ever had to stop. Going to be getting a full sleeve on the other arm soon, so that'll be fun to see.
Best way I can describe the needle on the skin is like a very direct sunburn, mostly just annoying depending on your pain tolerance and how much work is getting done. It never gets any better, you just know what to expect and roll with it
The best way I've been able to describe the feeling of getting a tattoo, is that yeah, it hurts. But it isn't unbearable. The artist I regularly go to, is kinda heavy handed, but he does amazing work. Shout out to Beloved Family. With the exception of my first tattoo, all of my sessions have lasted several hours, with my longest being 16 hours, with a few short breaks for a snack and cigarette.
Honestly, I'd say the buzz of the machine is the most nerve wracking part about it. For anyone that wants a tattoo, I'd say think about what you want, and where you want it. Do a bit of research on artists in your area, and when you find an artist that you want to work with. Talk to them, and listen to them, then get it done.
I haven't done tattoos in like 15 years... It's crazy how far things have come!

The pain depends on the person, also fatty tissues hurts the least, on bone it hurts the most and where the muscle connects hurts more. Then the artist touch is a factor.

I was nervous to get my first tattoo, despite it being my best friend who was the artist. The pain was akin to a sunburn.
It took my family two weeks to notice my left firearm had a sigil on it.

So this was less about the "Do's and Don'ts" and all that and more about just the process. So honestly, lots of factors go into tattoos. The main things you should know, is first shop around. If you're in an area that has several tattoo parlors, don't hesitate to go in and chat with some employees. Helps you find out if you can trust them with something that will be on you for a long time, and usually get an idea of their artwork. Also try to have a clear image of what you want, be it a doodle/drawing or a picture. Giving the artist some room for creativity isn't bad but it's better to have at least a solid idea. As for pain, that's subjective but it's also known that certain areas will be more painful than others so just remember that. Lastly the big don't for a tattoo, is a person's name, well specifically a significant other. Relatives who have passed away or your children, is perfectly acceptable and most artists will go through with it no problem. Trying to get your wife/husband isn't great idea, and a girlfriend/boyfriend is even worse.
as a general rule of thumb for pain with tattoo's:
the closer the area your getting a tattoo on is to bones the more painfull it is, ofc there are soft spots that arent close to bones but will hurt like crazy but as i said rule of thumb
i got my first and sofar only tattoo on my chest and im a skinny guy so i could feel the pain go up when it was right above the ribs and go down to a more then manageable level when it was between the ribs, also some advice my tattoo artist gave me: have a good a hearty meal and drink alot of water before hand
Best way I can put getting a tattoo is like having the worst sunburn and then someone scratching it. That's not of course always the same constant feel because a 6 hour tattoo is going to be way different than a 2-3 hour tattoo and fully depending on the location.
I personally think the best way to describe the pain of getting a tattoo is like a light cat scratch, so it'll hurt more on the inside of limbs then on the outside, for example the inside of the forearm where your veins are vs your shoulder

This was interesting to see, as I just got my 3rd tattoo a few days ago. xD
The pain is kind of hard to explain because everyone has their own pain tolerance & also depending where the tattoo is. Also, it depends if the artist is heavy handed or light handed.
I've gotten 3, and 2 of them are probably a bit bigger than 10"x6", one is a black and grey phoenix that takes up most of the top of my forearm and the other is my les paul also black and grey and it takes up a lot of my calf. The 3rd one was my first tattoo ever, a tree of life and its probably 3-4 inches square. I don't care for the one on my calf, my most recent. My forearm is my favorite. Tattoos don't really hurt in the traditional sense, its more like a hot pressure with buzzing, kinda like electricity but more physical. My tattoos are mostly all shader, with a little bit of liner and liner actually hurts. I can sit through multiple hour stretches of shader no problem but as soon as we hit the linework im sweating. There are also just more sensitive parts of an area that can hurt, like i thought the underside of the forearm was more painful that the top, and in the muscle of the calf really sucked at times. But like 80% of my time getting tattooed was chill, just felt like someone was drawing on me a little too hard, just jammin out to metal, talking to the artist. I'd recommend the experience if your health and financial situations allow it.

As for my personal experience with tattooing, I could only describe it as a hot razor blade or shaving your face with a blunt razor requiring more pressure. After 5-6 minutes of the tattooing 'tool' (I'll not say GXN cos of keywords) buzzing away and the dragging feeling I eased into a chill zone and let the outlining continue. My only issue was the magnum shading needles with my tattoo which felt like I was a chicken being carved up 🥴 and took time to get used to.
Getting text is always fun. One of mine is a block of text and I spent a few hours while they kept doing the letters to make sure the letters stayed.
Watching this while trying to find a good tattoo artist for my second tattoo. First being on my bicep and it was super relaxing. Felt like a buzzing feeling with scratching. The scratching feeling went away as soon as the needles left the skin.

I love getting tattooed i find it really relaxing.

I have 3 tattoos one on my chest, one on my wrist and a big one on my shoulder, the chest tattoo was the most painful but my shoulder was the least even though its the biggest, most areas will be more painful then others but I always enjoyed the process like once you get one tattoo you'll want another and another haha

I got my forearm done at the end of August and dear lord that hurt like hell. When I got my upper arms done, I barely felt it (fell asleep in my first one).

Can anyone chime in on this: My gf's tattoo artist gave her that advice to submerge the tattoo soon after it's finished in water as hot as you can stand it. and then kinda take care of it as described by Michael. It seems to have helped it stop seeping very quickly and she (as per the artist) didn't have to cover it with foil as rigorously anymore.
For reference this was a heavy black piece down the calf - so respectably sized.
Im working my way down my arm for a sleeve, my sister is too. Neither of us has ever heard about dipping your tattoo in hot af water. We've always done it the 'old' way as mentioned in this video, only different.
After coming home with the wrap on. You can take it off after about 3 hours and just let it sit. When you go to bed the first night, you lotion it, and wrap it up. Afterwards, you lotion it twice a day for 2 weeks. It's important to know that as with normal wounds, they do need fresh air to heal nicely. Don't wrap it up and forget about it, and don't do that fancy second skin wrap Micheal uses for too long either.
If you sleep with pets in your room. You have to wrap it up every night with lotion.
No (excessive) drugs or alcohol for 48 hours after tattoo.
Maybe the dunking in water works? I certainly don't know, and I know that a lot of tattoo artist have some sort of variation on the "lotion it x amount per days for x amount of days" or, using the fancy wrap that Michael used.
**Also, personal preference** If you're going into any sort of extreme weather, (Heavy rain, hail, snow, heavy winds.) Lotion it, wrap it up,. And never pick up any pets for ~1-2 weeks, as they could scratch your tattoo with their nails.
