I tragically lost my mother during the covid pandemic, and I didn't have the chance to say goodbye to her, Joy's story touched me deeply, I finished the episode in tears but very happy to be able to watch such a beautiful story, Merry Christmas to everyone!
My mother died before that time due to cancer and even so I got to see her one last time before she died (luckily my father was there so she didn´t die alone) the ending still made me cry because I loved her so much and especially during the holidays I think of her. If there is an afterlife I hope I get to see her again like how Joy did in this story. Merry Christmas and have a wonderful time with your loved ones.
@@timlemmens1087 And there probably wasn't a star seeded by Villenguard there that greeted Jesus. A story has to have enough creative freedom to express itself (and the meaning of the location would have been slightly muddled if it said 6BC)
My father died 3 weeks before Christmas just after his birthday. Not long after, my mother died Christmas night. Holidays are a bummer in my family for me but this episode will restore a lot of faith.
Is it wrong that I enjoyed the year of the Doctor being on Earth more than the main story plot? I love the moments of the Doctor trying to live a normal life in his endless adventures of roaming around all of time and space, whether it is in comedic stories like The Lodger, with the Eleventh Doctor passing off as a flatmate, or in darker stories like Human Nature/The Family Of Blood, with the Tenth Doctor disguised as John Smith living in early twentieth century England and having a future with Joan Redfern. Even the Ninth Doctor remarks how he never had a life like the couple who were to be married in Father's Day from how they met.
So many little moments. Joy throughout. Very creative. If I hunted, I might find something to not like, but I’m not interested. Definitely one of the best of the specials.

Joy's story had me sobbing... it really hit close to home. My dad was dying in the hospital around christmas 2021... i caught covid while visiting him & missed the last week of his life. I'm glad Doctor Who touched on this topic. It was/is still so life-altering for many people. While this episode was a bit heavy i loved the concepts included w/ the doctor slowing down, the time hotel, making friends, seeing the hobbit door, t-rex, Joy bringing hope/joy to the world, Trev's help, & Anita's opportunity, etc.
I love watching the behind the scenes of doctor who! Joy to the World was such a brilliant christmas special and I loved the character of joy! Anita was amazing and I hope we end up seeing more of her! Merry Christmas! ❤️❤️🔷🎄😊

Intriguing concept with the case, emotional ending, lovely sequences between the Doctor and Anita. Creative way that the doors are used. The rest of it was alright, but nothing special. But I enjoyed it, so that's the important thing.
Australian here , my mother was in an aged care home about 800 metres from my house and she was dying and I was not allowed to see her because of covid restrictions , the last time I saw here was 6 weeks before she died on 22 April 2020 . so this episode hit me because I felt guilty that she died without me being there .
I just watched the episode and it is great. It is completely insane but so very wholesome. My favourite character this time was Anita, played by Stephanie de Whalley. The characters' relationship to the Doctor actually beat the main storyline of the episode for me, simply because the two actors had such great chemistry. I think Anita would be a great choice for a future companion. That being said I also enjoyed Joy played by Nicola Coughlan quite a bit. Well, this was nice. And now I will be waiting for the next episode.
Did anyone notice the song "the stowaway" from the david tenannt christmas special "voyage of the damned" near the start when we first see the inside of the hotel in the background instrumentation? Thats my favorite christmas special and i literally screamed
It's a fun story but that door has never been mysterious to me because I grew up in a big family. When we (rarely) stayed in a hotel we needed two rooms that were next to each other. Then the people in both rooms would unlock their side of the door and it would be opened. You can only open it if both sides are unlocked.
Such a good episode. Nicola and the actress that played Anita were wonderful. I wish that Joel Fry's character hadn't died, but seeing the conclusion of the his and all the victims' stories was really touching. The ending had me crying.
Doctor Who always does. I can't think about Rose, Jack, Donna, Amy and Rory, Clara, Billie or any of The Doctor's companions stories without tearing up and nothing else gets me like that.
In the last year I lost my partner and wasn't there for him at the end because I ran out of the physical and emotional strength to be there. Will always blame myself for it but know he doesn't, just as Joy's mom never blamed her.
Watched the episode last night. Waited for Ellie from @WhoCulture to give me her ups and downs. Heading to watch it again! The Doctor and Anita were perfection 👌🏾
It had everything, glitz and glamour, high budget action but also so much heart and every every character had a great character arc that you could emotionally invest in and break your heart. Brilliant stuff and brilliant performances all around, Nicola Coughlan absolutely breaking my heart, as well as Steph De Whalley.
@clayyoda5611 Honestly that part was really weird cos it legit led the whole plot unfolding simply cos they made those jokes xD Episode was fine though I enjoyed it nonetheless
It began slowly, at times I felt bored, later picked up. Very sentimetal, references to COVID time deaths and being alone are the kind of things usually written into TV soaps. Not my favourite modern episode, I share comments by others that Anita was a ray of sunshine.
Steven Moffat delivered once again.❤ Loved the Weeping Angels reference. Sometimes it felt off a bit, but it came together beautifully in the end. We need Anita back. ❤When it was speeding through that one year at the hotel I'm not gonna lie, I was a little bit... Annoyed (?), but by the end I wanted to see more of her. Hey @Doctor Who nice Christmas special there! Steph De Whalley was lovely, would love to see her back in episodes! ALSO, do inform higher ups: I have a suggestion for next DW actor; and that is Greyston Holt. I know it's kinda unorthodox for a viewer to suggest one and he's Canadian, but was just watching "A sweet Christmas Romance" on telly and I think he'd be great for the role. He has that DW feeling, and amalgam of several doctors of the past, but could make his own stand out(there are elements of it in that movie I spotted him at, if you'll watch).
One of the best Christmas Specials of recent years. Proof of Moffatt's genius and how much RTD is no longer able to uphold the expectations of writing WHO.
DW NEEDS Moffat back. No one, and I mean NO ONE writes for the Doctor as well as he does. RTD deserves all the credit for bringing DW back, but his writing is silly and has no depth. Moffat knows how to take us on an emotional roller coaster.

BY the time the mistake was realised they'd already been counting years up from "1AD" for almost 1500 years - a bit late to change it all up.
I thought so too but after looking into it I think they used the date of the Epiphany or Three Kings Day, which is at the end of the twelve days of Christmas. It’s supposed to be the day the three wise men visited baby Jesus following the Star to his location since we don’t know exactly how long before or after Jesus’s birth the star actually appeared. The bible never makes that bit clear only says the wise men used it as a guide. If they’re going by that date and keeping December 25th as the date of Jesus’s birth then it would already be into the new year after his birth when they visited and the Star was visible. So basically year 1 if Jesus was born in year 0. Not sure if that’s how they came to that conclusion for Doctor Who but it’s my best guess. 😂
