Brant, I fished on quite a few military bases/installations with my Dad when I was a military dependent and later as a military officer (now retired) and everyone of them had some sort of warning sign that warned civilian boaters not to approach the installation's shores or structures within a certain distance (sometimes 200ft and sometimes included some sort of threat of prosecution). Additionally if you check on most navigational charts, there are map symbols that indicate the military off limits areas or stand off distance that vessels or aircraft have to maintain around some military installations.
It seems like it depends on who you talk to when it comes to a military facility. Most of those guys don’t mind as long as you are respectful. But with no signs or boundaries… how are you supposed to know ?! That was probably the biggest red I’ve seen ! Great video

When you put in at Navy Point on the other side of NAS Pensacola in Bayou Grande, the restricted areas show up on my nav chart. Never thought to look at my chart on the bay side. Though, from working on NAS previously I knew boats were not to come near. We were told to tell them they have to move out or to call base security if they don't. BTW, I have 2 flounder honey holes on NAS to hit fishing from shore.
If the base has a 200ft rule, it would be too easy to post signage along the shore stating that. I briefly checked their Morale/Recreation website and didn't see anything. There were no marker bouys for marking the 200ft line. If it's a security thing, it should also show up as a security icon on Navionics. I suppose in the end, it's better safe than sorry.. or ticketed.
The fishing distances from military installations mostly became a big thing after 911. I live in Norfolk and we used to troll for stripers in popular spot next to the navy ships. Can't do that anymore. We have to keep 500 ft away now.

Hey Brant, don't know if you'll see this, but my dad was actually stationed at NAS Pensacola, the base you were fishing at, for around 2 months. got to fish from the dock, and saw several boats getting stopped and moved. I would call the base and ask them about how far away you have to be. Seems like you should have to post signs. I know in many states you have to be 100 feet away from a pier to fish. Florida doesn't seem to have that rule though. 🤔
NAS Pensacola has / had a 500 foot exclusion zone around the shoreline. The port security guys will confront you. There used to be buoys out there (post 9/11) to stop folks from getting close, but if you are authorized to be on base, you can fish from the shore. Fished out of Sherman Cove a lot back in the day...
Yeah, it's still on the charts. It's not uncommon for the average service member to be unaware of the exact nuances of the legal restrictions. Whoever the boat operator previously encountered either didn't know how to enforce the restriction, or wasn't actually tasked with enforcing it beyond communicating that a restriction is in place. Which is why sometimes it's wise to just leave before someone is called who does actually know how to enforce it.
Hey Brandt, love your content! Check out NOAA coastal chart 11383 and it clearly shows the exclusion zone surrounding NAS. Just think about what a terrorist could do with a 10# satchel charge from the beach. Keep up the awesome videos. Cheers
They come up with guns here. They are being nice they have bouys around the base if you pass the buoys they have speed skiffs with mounted guns so make you leave. They store ammo here so. And have a underwater submarine docking.
there was 3 people on the base ? what do they do if you are at MacDill ADB in Tampa Bay...Centcom HQ ? bogus ego maniac? maybe they were actually doing something classified ? i know a couple places in Va. where they have stuff going on but do not draw attention to themselves ...who knows?

All vessels and craft, including pleasure vessels and craft (sailing, motorized, and/or rowed or self-propelled), private and commercial fishing vessels, other commercial vessels, barges, and all other vessels and craft, except vessels owned or operated by the United States and/or a Federal, State, or local law enforcement agency are restricted from transiting, anchoring, or drifting within the above described area, or within 500 feet of any quay, pier, wharf, or levee along the Naval Air Station Pensacola shoreline abutting, nor may such vessels or crafts or persons approach within 500 feet of any United States owned or operated vessel transiting, anchored, or moored within the waters described in paragraph (a) of this section. The Commanding Officer, Naval Air Station Pensacola, or his/her designee, or the Commanding Officer of a vessel of the United States operating within the said area, may grant special permission to a person, vessel, or craft to enter upon the waters subject to the restrictions aforementioned.
I was a civilian government employee and we had free range to fish on any and all military property. If they are on military property then they are active or civilian. Unless they are doing active drills or procedures then the water is open to the public. Especially if there are no markers in the water.
If it's a Karen yelling at you to move away from her private dock, go ahead and tell her you want the smoke. However, if it's the military telling you to step back. Thank them for their service and keep it moving.
Actually if it was Pensacola Naval Air Station you were off of then the restricted distance was 500 feet and that is contained in CFR 33 CFR § 334.778.
I used to flounder around the base all the time. Then they started running me off. Now I heard the markers are gone I was thinking about trying it again. Wish I knew the answer
You know Brant sometimes people feel and think that this is their pier and they don`t want you near it, put a - Sign Up, and this way I don`t have to hear your beautiful voice screaming a couple of hundred feet away, that`s what we call a D- Head! in NYC and I`m sure in other fishing areas also where you find characters like this one. Otherwise a nice video. UA-cam told me to change the wording 5 times on my comment they said it wasn`t friendly, I`m tired of getting banned for two days every time they feel it`s not appropriate language that I use, Hey Brant do you use Rumble?
Are you keeping any of the fish you catch? All my life we fished the Chesapeake Bay and filled our freezers. I don’t know what it’s like to catch and release!
I work on that base the coast guard has one set of rule when it comes to that but it's a navy base and they have a different set of rules when it comes to it it's a lot
I’ve been through this before. UNLESS there’s a VISIBLE sign out THEY CAN’T STOP YOU. It’s tidal waters so idc what someone says from the dock. Tell them to GFC
People on here saying the restricted areas are on Nav charts. USCG rules are different that land rules. e.g. USCG can pretty much do anything for any reason so beware.
Correct. The nautical chart for NAS Pensacola shows multiple restrictions (500 feet is the actual distance they are supposed to stay away). Signs would be nice, but uniformed service members yelling from shore and/or their own vessel work just as well. I wouldn't be surprised if the USCG, Navy, or someone else was trying to hail them on the radio too.
That because they don't wont you to catch their fish I used to fish it all the time the Coast guard had no problem with us fishing all around there so it's just the people don't want you to catch what they think is their fish
Having been employed by the government in the area of security of the United States, it's not fishermen of fish they are concerned about, its fisherman pretending to be fishing for fish but really fishing for information/intelligence on our military activities they are concerned with. Laws or not, you have to sympathize with their aims if you like your country. Lots of other places to fish, why not make the job of our military folks easier and safer and our country more secure?
If I were you, Brant, I would try to investigate that further to find out what the exact terms are as far as being able to fish there. Obviously not everyone at the base had the correct information to give you on what their exact rules/terms were. I do believe though that you did the right thing by not getting into a confrontation with them, because they probably have the right to detain you and that would have just messed your day up completely. But like I said if it was me, I would probably research it at a later time. If you do, keep us updated and apprised of the situation. BTW, would you mind saying what military base it was? Otherwise, I really appreciate everything you do brotha, take care and GOD BLESS!
No signage no restrictions. What exactly do these clowns think they did before the days of gps? Nothing on a paper chart either. Yeah remember those? I bet these people complaining cant read a paper chart. Great channel btw. Keep up the great work 🍀🐟
Actually, it is on the paper charts (11383 specifically) and even if it wasn't, it's written under 33 CFR § 334 and you can add it yourself. Not every law requires a sign to be posted.
Yep shoreline fishing is pretty relatable. I just wish the snow and ice would melt so it would look more like Florida here and i could relate to being barefoot on the boat . Florida looks real nice.
Yeah, you weren’t hurting anything and you were being respectful. That said, it is a military base and the mere fact you were filming might be an issue. Or the possibility they’re dropped something dangerous near the shore. All kinds of unknown factors.
Use to boat that area while living a short time in Fairhope, Alabama. The intercostal toward Pensacola is beautiful. Sandy beaches everywhere and the blue angels (name ??) would be practicing over us while having a shore lunch. The fly boys like to drop down and check out the ladies. Your tax dollars at work.
When the complainer is armed with automatic weapons and you're armed with a fishing rod, I'd defer to the complainer. That's where the "pick your battles" comes into play.
I know when I was on base no one can just seat there outside the perimeter since it is considered spying I may not be using the right words but even fishing is an issue like they say planty fish in the sea get lost and got fish somewhere else
It absolutely has to be posted with signs and or buoys to be enforceable! 33 CFR § 334.778 states otherwise. No signs or buoys are required. It's on the nav charts and regardless, once warned, it absolutely can be enforced. People should ignore your comment.
@@JH-wd6dp Nah, criminal courts don’t work that way..I’ve been in the business 29 years.. just ignore whomever is shouting on land, it’s not a warning if you can’t hear them. Florida sure does have that rule but I don't think a lot of the people can read
That is a good video fishing!😍
there was 3 people on the base ? what do they do if you are at MacDill ADB in Tampa Bay...Centcom HQ ? bogus ego maniac? maybe they were actually doing something classified ? i know a couple places in Va. where they have stuff going on but do not draw attention to themselves ...who knows?
They guide is right. If there are no signs or buoy's marking the boundary, you can fish anywhere.
Not true on government bases. The boat captain is responsible for knowing. It will be on the charts he uses.
Not true, it's up to the captain of the vessel to know beforehand.
It would be nice if the military protect our borders like that.
Yeah Dude. You should check before you go fishing the shores and waters of a US Military Installation. If you were indeed in Pensacola Bay and waters contiguous to the Naval Air Station, Pensacola then the law is as follows:
Restricted Area:
(a) The area: Beginning at a point on the northerly shoreline of Grande (Big Lagoon at Point 1, Latitude 30°19′42″ N., Longitude 87°21′06″ W., proceed southeasterly to Point 2, Latitude 30°19′27″ N., Longitude 87°21′03″ W.; thence, northeasterly, paralleling the shoreline at a minimum distance of 500 feet offshore, to Point 3, Latitude 30°19′48″ N., Longitude 87°19′35″ W.; thence, maintaining a minimum distance of 500 feet offshore or along the northerly edge of the Gulf Intracoastal Waterway Channel (whichever is less), continue to Point 4, Latitude 30°20′00″ N., Longitude 87°19′03″ W.; thence, maintaining a minimum distance of 500 feet offshore for the remainder of the area to: PT 5, Latitude 30°20′31″ N., Longitude 87°16′01″ W; Thence to PT 6, Latitude 30°21′11″ N., Longitude 87°15′29″ W; Thence to PT 7, Latitude 30°22′26″ N., Longitude 87°15′43″ W; Thence to PT 8, Latitude 30°22′39″ N., Longitude 87°16′08″ W; Thence to PT 9, Latitude 30°22′17″ N., Longitude 87°16′09″ W; Thence to PT 10, Latitude 30°22′18″ N., Longitude 87°16′35″ W; Thence to PT 11, Latitude 30°22′09″ N., Longitude 87°17′10″ W; Thence to PT 12, Latitude 30°22′15″ N., Longitude 87°17′19″ W; Thence to PT 13, Latitude 30°22′07″ N., Longitude 87°17′48″ W; Thence to PT 14, Latitude 30°22′25″ N., Longitude 87°17′53″ W; Thence to PT 15, Latitude 30°22′13″ N., Longitude 87°18′54″ W; Thence to PT 16, Latitude 30°21′57″ N., Longitude 87°19′22″ W; Thence to PT 17, Latitude 30°21′57″ N., Longitude 87°19′37″ W; Thence to PT 18, Latitude 30°21′49″ N., Longitude 87°19′49″ W; (a point on the southerly shoreline of Bayou Grande).
(b) The regulations.
(1) All persons, vessels, and other craft are prohibited from entering the waters described in paragraph (a) of this section for any reason.
Nice ones.
I was a civilian government employee and we had free range to fish on any and all military property. If they are on military property then they are active or civilian. Unless they are doing active drills or procedures then the water is open to the public. Especially if there are no markers in the water.
Brant - what kind of line and lb test are you throwing for that small light plastic?
10lb braid with a 15lb fluoro leader.
You can fish the river here, but if you fish too close to the shipyard where the build military boats, you're greeted by a patrol boat with a 50 cal.
Can't keep the boarder secure but that dock is!
Biden will protect him and his people but not the people he serves
Border, English much?
All of my boarders are secure. I collect rent every month for the rooms they rent. Thanks for bringing your sense of grammar to my attention.
I would contact the base public affairs n discuss the two separate encounters to get it fixed for everyone
If it's a Karen yelling at you to move away from her private dock, go ahead and tell her you want the smoke.
However, if it's the military telling you to step back. Thank them for their service and keep it moving.
As a vet.... dude was probably not liked. He was a karen and blue falcon
No. One owns water. If you aren't out of water you are good to go.😊😊😊😊😊
I'm former military. I'm surprised that the military boat didn't tell you to keep back.
Actually if it was Pensacola Naval Air Station you were off of then the restricted distance was 500 feet and that is contained in CFR 33 CFR § 334.778.
What pole and reel are you using. I've been looking for a light tackle setup. I fish along the Pensacola area when I visit during the summer break.
I used to flounder around the base all the time. Then they started running me off. Now I heard the markers are gone I was thinking about trying it again. Wish I knew the answer
I understand your point, but you like me and most people respect and act accordingly with authority!
What kind of setup are you using in this awesome video?
You have an uncanny ability to reel in the biggest catches!
Raised near a military base on the great lakes..and we knew to just give them the room they wanted. There shuld have been a sign..but
I work on that base the coast guard has one set of rule when it comes to that but it's a navy base and they have a different set of rules when it comes to it it's a lot
Brant u the man appreciate all ur videos 📹 🙌 thanks for bringing me great fishen tips 😀
Appreciate it
I've noticed on the last few episodes that your change the oil and filter notice is on. LOL.
You clearly aren't a threat 🙄 or kind of pirates, but you weren't aware about the restricted area ,so turn around was best options.
That's Pensacola NAS.
It should be posted
Have you done any fishing lately with bananas for bait??? Great bait and great snack!!! ❤❤❤
next time you're in fort walton beach lets get up and fish. got a center console we can go on
Yep shoreline fishing is pretty relatable.
Personally I would use voodoo shrimp
Awesome video bro, the cart at the end, was that the one you refurbished on a previous video?
When the complainer is armed with automatic weapons and you're armed with a fishing rod, I'd defer to the complainer. That's where the "pick your battles" comes into play.
I know when I was on base no one can just seat there outside the perimeter since it is considered spying I may not be using the right words but even fishing is an issue like they say planty fish in the sea get lost and got fish somewhere else
200ft tell that to the fish lolol
It absolutely has to be posted with signs and or buoys to be enforceable! Especially Military Bases and Government Installations on LAND, they’re all posted.. and that’s exactly why the Marine Police don’t enforce it there, (it’s not posted) **You should’ve ignored whomever was yelling at you.. Former USCG, 29yr LEO..
If the Police show up and advise to leave then fine obey them. Definitely not an unidentified subject on shore, that’s not a sufficient warning.
@@spinfish1434 More poor advice. 29 years of leading people to get jammed up it seems.
@@JH-wd6dp Righto 🙄
This had happened to me multiple times here lol
Same dudes at that fire house and all lmao
You were a charter captain in Pensacola. You know better than to fish that close to the base, you can't play dumb about that one. This shit is clearly done for making a video. But hey, what do I know? 😂😂
I think officer Karen needs to go finish his paperwork lol
Huge red
Interesting question?
I don't believe they own the water. No signs or buoy's to let anyone know. Beautiful fish.
