An Abandoned Classic Mercedes, an old Ural Motorcycle, and a Great Coffee in Costa Adeje, Tenerife!

  • We headed off to try and find a few bits for the Bonneville, so we stopped off in Tenerife’s China Town.
    After that, we rode along the coast to a great little spot called Soul Kitchen- great coffees, cakes and sandwiches!
    We saw a number of fantastic vehicles, including a motorcycle and sidecar that I’d never heard of- a Ural. I also looked at some popular bikes in Tenerife, as well as a few old cars, including an abandoned Mercedes from the 1970/80s!
    And we stop off at the coast and see where many of the camper vans choose to set up as their base- it’s a really eclectic mix that looks a bit like the scene from an apocalypse movie- fully loaded up vans with roof racks and people living in them, possibly long term.

    Freddie, I love all the little gems you’ve found in Tenerife.
    The Panda is a great fun car that originally was meant for farmers and people working or living out in the country side, and it is super reliable and incredibly easy to repair.
    THe Ural is a bike I have been after for years now. I think they were originally Russian military bikes. THere is a guy somewhere in northern United States who rides his every single to to work including in the snow during the harsh winter days of the US Midwest.
    The Vespas are everywhere in Spain. I live in Seville, and they are absolutely everywhere. Modern, old, and anywhere in between.
    Finally, the Mercedes. My very first car was a 1979 Mercedes 300D, gifted to me by my uncle. It was light blue, with matching hubcaps, and matching velvet interior.
    Glad to see you and Monica are enjoying your time there.

    Glad you are enjoying Tenerife- it’s a gem. Can’t wait till you hit Teide and the north of the island.
    With regards to your brake fade, yes a fluid change will help. However, it’s mostly down to technique. 1.Don’t comfort drag your brakes they will get hotter and hotter including hubs which will retain the heat. 2. Brake when you need to brake and let off completely when you don’t need to brake this will aid cooling. 3. Another main point - use the engine to do the braking on long decents. 4. Alternate pressure between back brake and front so the front doesn’t have to work so hard. Hope this helps - safe riding dude.

    Haven't seen all the comments, so I may be repeating a lot. The Ural is a Russian built MC, now enjoying a resurgence in USA. It's been around since the second world war, when Germany signed the non aggression pact with Russia, one of the requests was that they allowed the BMW boxer engine to be made in USSR, enter the URAL. Used by the Russian Military for decades after.
    It has now, become almost a cult following around the world, and has many Adventure weekends, where the bikes are put through their paces in Rivers, off road tracks, and anywhere else they can find to test the bikes n extreme conditions.
    There are quite a few videos on this chanel dedicated to this wonderful machine.

    I know I'm way late to the party but you mention someone recommended changing fluid to 5.1 which wasn't the problem with you brakes although it would fix it. Brake fluid absorbs water from the atmosphere during its time in your brake system and it's the water that boils, forms gas and thus compresses. New dot 4 will fix it even in Tenerife. Also pads worn very thin will transmit more heat into the caliper so can be a factor. Great videos as always Freddie.

    Back in 1987 or 1988 we took a Seat Panda up Mount Teide, we just followed a track and kept climbing! we were 5 up and the little car just took it in its stride. The tracks got fainter the higher we got but amazingly the panda took us to within a short walk 500m or so of the rim of the crater. This tiny car climbed about 10,500 ft up the volcano with 5 adults on board and it wasn't even the 4x4 version! Perhaps you would like to recreate the adventure?

    The abandoned Mercedes-Benz that you have taken in your video, according to a mobile application that I have installed on my phone and that identifies any license plate that you consult, is 24 years and 9 months old. It was registered on January 1, 1997.

    During the 1930s, when Germany and Russia were allies - that brief moment before WW II - Russia acquired the plans for the German BMW, and started production of this BMW-hybrid under the name of "Ural," often with a sidecar. After the War, Russia kept producing Urals from these BMW plans, while Germany BMW continued evolving. So the Urals were stuck in the past, reproducing the best bikes of the 1930s. BTW I live in Toronto, Canada, and there are at least two Urals cruising the streets. They are army green, not pretty turquoise like this one!

    I believe the Ural bikes come from Russia. As the styling hints they were copies of the 1930s BMWs. The leading link front suspension is to make the steering work better with a sidecar. When I was a lad they had a left hand side kick start, which was ok for a continental sidecar, but rather difficult to kick start with a British sidecar . (No electric starters in those days). They also did some models with drive to the sidecar wheel for off road use. I once saw one on display that had been used by the Spanish Police, not sure but I think it was in Jerez or Seville. Interesting looking bikes.
    Have you ever tried riding a combination (bike and sidecar)? I bought one once (Honda CX500 with a Watsonian single seat sidecar). Horrible to ride. Once I removed the sidecar, the bike gave me years of good fun, including trips to southern Spain and also to the south of France.

    That was a Benelli TNT135, like a Honda Grom. That would a great bike for zipping around the island.
    Edit: Well, in the USA it's a 135, this one is the 125 (probably due to EU moto license segments), but same idea.

For the brake fluid use what’s recommended by Triumph for your bike. The wrong fluid will destroy the brake system. Just a bit advice.

    Amazed you’ve never heard of Ural with their leading link front forks - which is a not uncommon modification on many sidecar bikes not just Urals. Never really caught on for solo bikes though Greaves used to have a sort of similar arrangement. They were Russian made originally and since 2022 made in Kazakstan - not the USA though they are sold there.

    Vespas are perfect for that climate yeah. A mate of mine had one when we were 16, and I was always very jealous from my Gilera Runner 50SP which was decently quick but a real chavmobile. You've got a few scooter dealers on the island, including Tifon which I think are official Vespa distributers. When I was looking at moving to the island a couple of years back my plan was to sell my vehicles in the UK and get one of the bigger Vespas on arrival, a GTS300 or something. Perfect sunny climate riding machine, but with enough poke to make it up to the hills too. What a life that would be.

    LML(Lohia motors limited) is an Indian motor vehicle company. It's a company based in my hometown Kanpur, India.

  • @HamRidez
    @HamRidez 2 роки тому

    Morning Freddie. LML were an Indian scooter company who went into a joint venture with Piaggio and LML in the 80's. I think the partnership ended in the early 2000's and LML went bust completely quite recently. It was by my understanding a bid to bring Vespas into the Indian market at a lower cost, although alot of them got important to the US. These old scooters got me into biking at 15 years old. I can say from my experience alot of "purists" avoided them as they weren't true Vespas. But the only difference is where they are made and badging as they used all the official tooling and machinery etc. Interestingly Servetta in Spain had a similar deal with Lambretta in the 50's and made lambretta bikes in Spain under the Servetta name. They are usually immaculate if you can find one due to the warm climate and lack of rain but just as unreliable and maintenance intensive as any other lambretta. I've seen a few of these in mainland Spain myself. Bit of knowledge for you anyway.
    And i'm with you on that the older vehicles in other countries are so fascinating. Even in France all the old diesel Renaults and Peugots look completely at home. In the UK it seems to be a race to the newest, most efficient car which is quite sad really. Just another reason to live motorcycles as you can be really unique. Have a great Sunday.

    Urals are great, I'll echo others in being surprised you've not heard of them before. They're a Russian brand that's been around basically forever making reverse-engineered BMW engine bikes. They're mostly known for the sidecars, though they do have normal bikes too, and they're still making basically the same bikes today, albeit with slightly modernised engines with fuel injection and so on. They even make two-wheel drive versions for better off-road and Winter abilities (bike rear and sidecar wheel). They're rough and agricultural but I'd definitely like to own one some day.

    Another great mini adventure ❤️ I have to admit that I hadn’t heard of Ural until I saw a classic bike in Prison Break. Initially I thought it was an Indian, until the actor said it was a 1950’s Ural. Named after the Ural mountain region.
    I think that Mercedes Benz is an early 80’s SEL model. Although not sure without looking up. Bit of trivia - Mercedes was actually the first name of the daughter of Emil Jellinek, who was one of the company’s founders 👍

      Just a thought mate….. Before you change the brake fluid, have you checked your current brake lines and callipers are rated for the different fluid? I know my dyna will only take Dot 4. I’m slightly dubious that a warmer outside temperature would have that much effect on braking. I trained as an hgv / bus driver and brake fade was always a result of riding brakes, especially while going downhill. That’s why hgvs have engine braking systems

    • @FreddieDobbs
      @FreddieDobbs  2 роки тому

      @@bikeroffthebeatentrack This is eye opening- thanks so much for sharing this! I'll stick with the standard grade brake fluid, and I'll start using engine braking much more- the truck/bus brake fade as a result of riding the brakes is absolute golden info- I won't forget that!🙂

    • @bikeroffthebeatentrack
      @bikeroffthebeatentrack 2 роки тому

      Another thought occurred after my last comment….. so if your pads, discs (or rotors depending where you live in the world) are in good condition, then firstly I’d check how old your fluid is. Brake fluid is hygroscopic (absorbs water over time), meaning it loses it’s effectiveness. If your fluid is murky and dark, it could probably do with a change. I know HD recommend a brake fluid change every 2 years. Brake fluid comes in small containers as once the seal is broken it should not be stored for later use. If your fluid is good, then I’d check the calliper pistons. They need regular cleaning as they get gummed up with brake dust and general dirt, meaning they lose their effectiveness. Finally it may well be your lines need changing. Over time the stock rubber lines deteriorate meaning they ‘bulge’ rather than push the fluid to the pistons. If this is the case then it may be time for stainless steel or braided lines. Tbh these should be fitted as standard on higher quality machines eg. Triumph, HD etc but they don’t as they’re more expensive. Hope this helps 👍

    • @FreddieDobbs
      @FreddieDobbs  2 роки тому +1

      @@bikeroffthebeatentrack Thanks so much for this. I think you're spot on because I haven't changed the brake fluid once in my 2.5 yers of ownership of the Bonneville! I'll also give the calliper pistons too. Thanks:)
