I love my Helen Von Stein lambs ear that I have planted around my coral bark maple with Japanese yews and salvia. It gets huge and lush and beautiful. It is one of the best plant it and forget it plants around my garden here in North Texas. Love that you go into detail about the plants in this series so gardeners in other zones know what to expect oof it in their zones. Your gorgeous espalier background is to live for! I am going to try creating one here one day. Will have to watch your tutorials on doing that again! Thanks, Janey!

Thanks for posting. I’m in zone 9b as well but still on the fence. I have a few neighbors with them and most look terrible due to lack of maintenance. I’d love to surround my side walkway but one side doesn’t drain well. I think I’ll wait until next year now that the days are becoming shorter. Plus there’s a hiking trail in front of my house that blocks the sun even more during the winter months. They do look wonderful.

Interesting. I’m going to give it a go. I’m in Scottsdale AZ, zone 9b. It can be brutally hot here, extremely dry … sounds like your story, huh?
I live in a sea of cacti, euphorbias and tough as nails sages. I would be one happy girl if this plant could be happy here. Thank you.

I had lambs ear pop up in my garden because it is a natural wild plant where I live. It is beautiful! Ty for this!
I learned that plants in the mint family have a square stem

I LOVE my lambs ear!!! I let them go to flower as well. So pretty and soft. One of the few things that survived this California heat! 🧡❤️💜💙💚

I’m loving these plant profiles! Helen von stein is my son’s favorite plant, he wants a new one every time we go to the plant store. It just adds so much to our garden, especially with the mystic spires. Thank you so much for sharing, I would have never have thought to add these and I’m so happy I did ☺️ Hope you guys are staying cool in this heat!

Lamb’s ear is so beautiful. You are absolutely right about not planting it if you are in a humid area. I have tried it several times and it rots. I have had some success by growing it in a pot that I can take it in if it rains a lot. Thanks for sharing your knowledge with us. Have a wonderful day.

Hi Janey!! I learned of this plant from you! THANK YOU! 🌱 I now have it in my garden as well. I bought 3 this Spring/Early Summer and it's gotten HUGE!! I've already divided it where 3 is now 4, and I'm going to divide them again this fall and will end up with about 8 just from the 3 I purchased. I love that they are just a beautiful foliage plant without the added work of deadheading any spent blooms.

I agree 100% with this video!! Love lambs ear! It's funny because new gardeners will ask me what plants they should plant and I say start with salvia, lambs ear and lillies (usually daylillies). I live in the south, 8b and mine stands up great even in our humidity. I don't irrigate, just clean it up from time to time and it flushes back out beautiful again EVERY TIME! Once this year, I added fertilizer and it suffered. So funny that it thrives with neglect. Loving this series! 💚

I have my lambs ear plants, planted just below my azalea bushes, in the same bed with blue salvia and peonies. It adds a lot of contrast and beauty to the area. We just had several days of rain (6b, New England) which we needed badly, so I better check to see how my lambs ear plants are doing!! Great video!!

Oh OK, that’s why that wonderful plant doesn’t do well here in my zone 9B, Florida. We have so much humidity it tends to rot very easily. Boo

Same here! This answered a big question I’ve been having!
North Georgia, zone 7B. Not quite as warm as you, but very humid and lots of rain. My Helen Von Stein’s bottom leaves almost disintegrate when we get a week or so of rain. Fortunately they bounce back fairly quickly, so I guess I’ll keep them for another year or so to see how they do.

I love that plant too! (I love most of those fuzzy silvery plants, actually!) How long are you running your irrigation for - you mentioned what type of emmitter but I'm curious what works for your yard since we're the same zone.. (obvs temps & wind will affect that as well.)

I love these and they grow fast. I have two of these flanking my patio in pots. Right now I have shade cloth over them because of this crazy heat. In a pot they like a bunch of water. I love them and look forward to cooler weather.

Janey, I don't think it would like my heavy clay soil and high humidity. I've seen Lamb's Ear (not sure of the variety) in this area that looks terrible, so I'll probably stay away from planting it in my garden. The information you gave on how to grow it, light requirements, etc. was very helpful. Thank you. I hope you have a fun weekend! ~Margie🤗💐🐝🦋

I purchased one earlier this summer because of you and it is fantastic! Just love it and it loves my front flower garden too! It has doubled in size and now I can have 2 plants. I suppose spring would be the best time for me to divide? Hot and humid 7b in MS. We have had a dry summer though.

Here in N Carolina zone 7b they do well in an elevated or sloped bed so that our heavy rains drain away from the roots. It’s a champ alongside brick or rock walkways. It does not bloom here.

I have a different variety that I love as well. Mine has similar sz leaves, as in length but half as wide. I like the flower tho, as do the bees, pretty purple flowers that have a wonderful scent. It comes up in the yard too. I'm in a...don't hate me...rainy area here on the shore in Maryland, very humid as well, mine makes out fine. Guess it's the variety.?
