Lambs ears, pollinators love their flowers.
You are an amazing wealth of knowledge! Such an inspiration! Thank you!
I love that blue on you. I especially think the the darker blue flannel is perfect!
Thank you Lisa! I am loving my new finds, I got another great flannel and a lovely button down dark olive shirt. My garage sale find clothes and my homemade ones are my favorite articles of clothing :D
I love your blue & white plaid shirt! Great find!
Nearly all the flannel shirts you see me wear in my videos I got from garage sales. A lot of the T-shirts as well.
Hi Heidi, God is good all the time❤❤❤
Great finds!
I have to share I too hit a garage sale today and scored a dehydrated first 5.00 an old small size yolk( for horses and a crank radio!!! Woohoo!!!!
Nice!
Whew.......I'm always exhausted after watching everything you do!
adaisychain5 Me too, Heidi tires me just watching her LOL
adaisychain5, me too. Then says she has to get busy making something else & then 'oh I want to make soap too' !!!
adaisychain5 hahahaha! I say the same thing! So, I’m thinking that when we all clean up our diet, get off presc meds, eat herbs and take tinctures etc that Heidi takes THEN we will also have all the energy she has‼️I’m sure hoping that’s what I have to look forward to🤣😁🤣
You always have such great videos....I enjoy them all....I also like to watch Starry Hilder because she is back to eden gardening like you.............blessings............MINDY
Hi Heidi, So much wonderful information. I have to watch these a couple of times because I learn SO much from you. I wanted to share that I took your advice and cut back all my mint. Wow!! Such a good idea. It’s coming back so thick!! I am drying some of the mint and using some of it to make an apple mint vinegar...inspired by you!! I have to share that my hair has never looked so good since I started rinsing it with vinegar. Thank you so much for that tip!! I am anxious to make some of the nice variety of vinegars you talk about to see what scents I like the best for my hair. Oh!! I meant to ask you...do you ever grow purslane or portulaca (spelling?). I gather you can eat them and they are high in Omega 3. There has been a lot available in our area but I have only grown it for it’s beauty but now I am thinking I should make better use of it. Any thoughts you have are greatly appreciated. Have a great week. Love, Mary ❤️😘❤️
That is so great about how those things are working for you and I very much appreciate you sharing that with me. I have not tried purslane yet and am not sure it even grows around here. Not a lot of succulents that like this area but I should keep an eye out for it
My mom has been getting me candles from a second hand store (non-profit) on senior day for 50% off. She gave me about 10 lbs for $3. When we went to the coast, all their wood was wet. We used my lint/wax fire starters, wow! they were fantastic! Thank you! 👍💗
Nice! That is so cool! It has been very cold here even for our area in June, so I have been using these thin wafer Patrick made this last time for starting the fire and they have been working just as well as the thicker ones.
I need to make us some, thank you!
Garage sales here are mostly just clothes, nothing else except occasionally furniture. You probably already have one, but if not, you might grab a salad spinner at garage sales-great for quickly spinning off water after rinsing to speed up drying. Also gives upper arms a workout if you get the right kind. 🙃
Wow, I need to rest after all that ! That rhubarg mango vinegar looks so beautiful !!! Saturday we found some great yard sales. We went to one that belonged to a Mennonite family. It was around 2 pm & everything was 1/2 off ! We bought a hand crank 'Marga Mulino' (Marcato) grinder/mill that was made in Italy. It was used by the lady's mother for grinding small batches of grains like oatmeal, etc. She didn't have the book or any other info, so I will be looking it up. We paid a whopping $1 for it ! I'm hoping I can figure out how to adjust it to grind nuts, too.
O wow! What a find!
Wow is right ! I looked it up on line. Amazon lists it 1 for $95 & another that looks just like it for $363 !!! I am still trying to find a manual & cleaning brush for it.
ellen fisher you might need to order book from manufacturer but it'll still be cheaper than both those prices. Lol
Your knowledge is endless and I learn so much. I feel like a sponge lol.
We used to use the callbacks and shower bags every weekend when we used to race motorcycles. They are both so handy
I can't wait to try to dehydrated wooly lambs ear. I've grown it for years. I did not know it's benifits. I'm getting more and more interested in drying herbs. I've dried peppermint for years as my Grandmother did. Thank you.
I love Black tea too. I'll have to think about getting the herb for that to grow.
Great Garage Sale finds rage! Garage Sales are great! I needed a pair of winter boots and found a brand new pair for $3 at a church sale this spring.
Aloha Heidi, Garage sales are #1 on to-do list when we get back to Washington! Maui garage sales are far and few between and they have the same prices as Ross, as do the thrift store. Prices are high, the stuff is junk, and we found out that most of them happen every weekend! Well a vacation on Maui doesn't require a garage sale when you can go to the beach, right? Wrong, garage sales are essential to health of most of us who live a good life lol Aloha Kim (2 weeks till we go home!)
One time we went into town (an hour from us) and spent the day hitting garage and yard sales thinking we would find some great stuff, especially in the more "rich" neighborhoods. All they had was junk! We did find a couple of things but for all the sales we hit, it was hardly worth the drive in and the time spent. We get our best finds and deals right here in our little town.
Yeah, King County was much the same on.y they had good stuff but pricey with an occasion treasure. I like the wandering around with husband and or girlfriend. I would luv to see a video of you coming and going from a garage sale ;) I really miss the thrift stores, they are so empty here with expensive stuff. My friend does a whopper garage sale in Ellensburg every summer with 5 other girlfriends. Now that's one awesome garage sale! Collectors come from all over the valley. Can't wait to get home where you can travel more than 45 minutes. LoL Aloha Kim
Great find on the Go- bag! I need to look into getting one of those bags. I love thrift stores and around every holiday they gave their $1 sale. Good pickings today!
So glad you use common names!
Another fun video. Thank you Heidi! I would love to know more about colloidal copper. Also, blackberry leaves are suppose to be good for diarrhea and stomach upset for both humans and animals.
You're right those Blues are a good colour for you! You seem to have more of a Summer skin tone than an Autumn so any 'Blue Based' colours will look better than 'Yellow Based' next to your face. The flannel shirt looks great because they're all true blues.
I never thought about using the greenhouse for yogurt! Thanks for the great tip!
I made some from our cedar tree and one from tamarack greens too. They both smell great
I refer the the bags we keep in our vehicles as “get home bags.” They have everything we need to survive long enough to get home if we are stranded while we are out and about!
Thanks Heidi. Always learn something. Had lambs ears when twins were in primary school but the weather here killed them. May have to try again. I'm noticing that many plants needing full sun are doing better this year in partial shade. & partial shade items are liking full shade. Has anyone else noticed this? It's not all just some of them.
Yes! I have noticed this with some of my plants, very odd
Rain Country according to Some of the scientists this has to do with the GSM. The suns rays may feel hotter, too. I understand it has to do with the "cosmic & solar" rays being different than normal. Different plants prefer different spectrum of rays. Like some of us prefer cloudy days or snowshine to hot summer sunny days.
Some of the Homestead channels, here in the deep south, have plants that are usually full sun just drying up and dying, even with plenty of water.
Teena Pittman tell them to rug shade cloths over them and they'll do great. It's known as sun scald.
One of my plants got horribly chewed up by I suspect one of the many bunnies that roam, also chewed on a sunflower! Some of them brought up seed stems already, the others I will need to harvest some! However I need to wait on the woolly lambsears, my sunoven has catnip drying!
I still have yet to try using my solar ovens for dehydrating, I need to some day at least for practice in case my electric ones all bite the dust or we do not have solar power for some reason.
Rain Country it is a constant readjusting so it doesn't get too hot!
Your two new shirts look pretty on you :-D I am still coveting your milk bottle s&p shakers. Your vinegars are ABsoLUTEly BEAUTIFUL!!! I am still amazed at your teas. Where else could you get more bang for your buck out of one plant?!? How in the world would you install a solar shower on your roof? And, how would you get up there?!? I love petting my lamb's ears! It's good therapy ;)
Love & prayers
The solar shower idea is Patrick's, I am not sure exactly what he has in mind there but pretty sure it would involve running a hose in through the bathroom window and to our alternate shower head that is on the opposite end of the tub than the one hooked to our city water. We once had a pump we were running on solar power and would pump water we heated on the wood stove up through this alternate shower head. However, the pump burned up on us as we have yet to get a new one.
That sounds like a really clever idea, and, I'm certain that if it can be done, Pat would figure out how.
I have often wondered about the water filter system setup for your laundry and shower. I would imagine it might be impossible to filter enough rain water for those things. I bought a filter for the shower head that takes out chlorine only. I'm still bathing in all the rest of the chemicals, tho. I have always wanted a whole-house water filtration system, but, they're in the thousands.
It would be nice but we are in the same boat there, still relying on unfiltered city water for washing with :(
I love garage sales and thrift stores!
Love your videos and rummage finds. My husband and I go during the summer every Friday. It's become our date day and of course we hve to grab breakfast too! Luv your ideas and down-to-earthiness.
Thank you Jodie :)
Love it when you talk vinegar! LOL So I tried for some lilac vinegar when my lilacs bloomed...not too successful as it does not have even a hint of lilac smell. Thought it would make a great hair rinse and lilac is one of my favorite flower scents. My peppermint and lemon balm is outstanding, on the other hand. I swear it always seems ready in just a few days! I am wondering about my citrus (orange and lime). I did add extra sugar later in its process and gave it a lot more time. It still smells just like citrus and no vinegar smell at all...it just seems to be hanging out. Would love to know your thoughts on that if you have time!
Have you tried tasting it to see how tart it is? Also consider getting some ph strips to test it, the citrus smell could simply be overpowering the vinegar smell.
It tastes a little sour but not much. I did have a PH tester but my husband used it for something so that I am not touching it again! Nevermind that story. LOL My plan for the citrus vinegar is cleaning so I may just say it is ready to go...we will see how I feel this weekend about it. Thanks for your input, I truly trust your opinion.
Good info...I love seing your garage sale finds! Thank you!
Hum! My lambs ear died out a few years ago maybe I need to plant some more! Beautiful vinegars. Thanks for sharing your wisdom
Thank you Teresa :)
I always learn something new from your videos. Thank you.
Thank you again for those silicone molds! I used them the other day to make a lot of very cute mini soaps and I plan to make some gummies and chocolates with them soon too :D
Heidi, wow, great finds!!! all of your vinegars always look so wonderful! I cant help but be distracted by your hair tie, is that just leftover yarns? is it braided special? I just love it! =) You always amaze me! PS...my marshmallow plant is only about 2 ft and its flowering...I LOVE the soft leaves!! Is it normal for it to be so short when yours are so mamoth!! LOL....
The hair tie is crocheted (chain stitch) and I make them to match the skirts.
The marshmallow plants typically only get 2-3 feet in the first year but get bigger every year. My huge ones in my garden are about 4 years old. Next year yours should be twice as tall and as full as it is this year
Ok I've grown lavender two years now and don't really know what I'm doing but trial and error are the best way to learn so that hasnt stoped me. I am wondering about the letting it flower after your done harvesting that you talk about. I always wait for the purple flowers to show and then I harvest those ends. Am I harvesting the lavender wrong?
Do you mean the lamb's ear? That is what I thought I was talking about here. It is an older video so I do not recall everything I talked about in here without playing it
@@RainCountryHomestead I think you were talking about the lambs ear but I've heard it said " let it go to flower" about many plants. Does letting it go to flower mean its past harvest or should I get a book because there is lots to know lol.
Did I hear you correctly about having a fire, oh my our heat index is up close to 100 and temps are in 90's. I hate hot weather, I need to move north, LOL. Thanks for sharing the info on wooly lambs ear. I need to get some of that for sure, great video as always my dear friend, blessings
Yep, and I had to build another one today. It is crazy how it is middle of June and I am still having to build fires!
Rain Country Lots of talk about the beginnings of a grand solar minimum. If this weather is any indication, this may turn out to be a fact we are definitely heading toward something like that happening. That is why we prepare for such things, right? I try and do as much as I can, but never feel I am where I need to be....
Rain Country time to lay in triple wood for fire. GSM means more days without sun. Volcano in Guatemala sent ash up in atmosphere that will block sun for 2 years. If others do same we could end up with weather like that in 11th 12th & 14th centuries that led to deaths due to cold & famine.
Now is time to prepare. Things are growing great? Good gather & store all you can.
Edie Boudreau Yes, I have heard many ministers of late teaching/preaching about getting ready for some hard things to begin happening, based on biblical teaching of God's word. We need to be prepared for many things that can happen, so we have food, water, etc to sustain us.
we always have several years worth - this video only shows what we collected this last year: ua-cam.com/video/XsvmsZDpuB8/v-deo.html
Do you ever sell seeds from your wooly lambs ear or pineapple weed plants?
I have sold from my woolly lambs ear but do not have any available right now. Had not thought to save any from pineapple weed but I will see what I can do this year
Love your videos, thank you!
Thank you Meshelle :)
I need to get out and harvest more lemon balm and spermint...I have tons of it ahain
Stachys byzantina saving for copy paste later
I'm diabetic, can't have caffeine. Blows my sugar up.
Where do I find green or white tea seeds. Thank you Heidi
Green tea, black tea, and white tea all come from the same plant: Camellia Sinensis. All these teas have caffeine in them so it may not be the best choice for you. I recommend you stick to herbal teas
I have a question and hoping you can help. I have dehydrated chives but can I dehydrate the chive flowers too? Thanks in advance for you help
Yes, from what I was able to find. I have yet to grow chives so I have not tried it myself
Denise Wall yes. I have. And clover flowers.
Thank you. Since you can eat them, I thought they could be dehydrated as well.
Denise Wall you're welcome. They're great to toss in broth when you have a cold & can't taste anything as you get just enough onion flavor.
On rhubarb and fruit vinegar do you just use the stalk, like you would for pie? Or can you use the leafy parts?
Just the stalk, the leaves are toxic so I do not recommend adding them.
Hi, when you spoke about your bug out bag I remembered you said you were going to add a small sewing kit, did you ever add it , I forgot to ask.
Not yet, the bag stays out in the truck so out of site, out of mind.
Rain Country I keep envelopes from mail and a pen or mechanical pencil in pocket. Write down thoughts when get them & lists for next day each night before transfer things need to remember in order need to do. It really helps me. Of course this is how I've learned to function post head injury/concussions/ TIAs.
When is the best time to plant the Lambs ear seeds...I got seeds to grow it and I dont know if after the first frost? wait till spring? never planted it before...help Heidi 😵
It all depends on your own area and climate, it can vary greatly. I always start new herbs seeds indoor in late winter or early spring
@@RainCountryHomestead in South central Pennsylvania, 6/6B area
How do you grow lambs ear? Seeds?
I started mine from seed. I sold quite a few packs on my Etsy store but they sold out so I plan to try to save a lot more seed this year.
Where do you find the Camilla japonica
I would suspect a local nursery. Ours was already established when we bought the house over 30 years ago
Would you sell some herbal tea blends?
I might, it really depends on how much I can put up this year.
Is it still safe to pick lamb ears if it gotten wet and possibly have fugus.
Around here it rains a LOT so it is not uncommon for our lambs ear to get wet and yes it is safe, but if you know there is a fungus growing on it, no, I would not use it
@@RainCountryHomestead Thanks
Do you tincture or extract the lambs ear?
No, I have only used it for teas
Heidi, have you ever used the wooly lamb's ear as toilet paper? If yes, was it an okay experience? I hear the same thing about mullein but have also heard that wouldn't be a good experience. What do you think? I have the same issue with lemon balm. It spreads like crazy but seems to go kinda bad in our intense summer heat in Virginia.
Yes, I have tried it as a toilet paper replacement several times, it is very soft and works well.
Thank you. I will grow it, then. I appreciate the tip--I believe YOU. I really appreciate the projects that you do and your teaching. I use these 10 by 10 super-absorbent microfiber cloths by the Rag Company or something that I get on Amazon as cloths for #1 and I can tell you they work fabulously and I've saved some serious money over toilet paper for #1 over time. Take care. @@RainCountryHomestead
@@countryfrau8328 I simply use flannel squares from excess fabric I already have, they work great. I do not even bother to hem them, I just rip them into squares.
I tried that but even with cutting with pinking shears I just had too many little threads. No question your way is the more frugal route. I also bought a metal hanging rack with a zillion metal clips (I exaggerate) on it that I use to clip them on to dry. Saves a lot of room on my drying racks and I don't have to flip them to dry etc. Just an idea for you if you are laying them on wooden dowels to dry. Thanks for your feedback.
@@RainCountryHomestead
@@countryfrau8328 After a few washings, there is little problem with threads

Hello 👋🏼 just wondering if you got the 📦 I sent?
I did not get to the post office at all last week but will for sure being going later this afternoon. I will message you once I get it (if I don't have a brain cramp! haha)
