After watching the over the top, catastrophic, mental gymnastic, meltdowns, adults to teens- As each of my kids came downstairs I told them I’m so glad and proud mom they’re not reacting like that because as a parent I don’t know how I would handle that.
Thank you for sharing this discussion. My husband and I have a person in our friend sphere ( mature adult on the autism spectrum) who isn't handling the election well. The person deleted other members of our group when they tried to establish boundaries or express why they made their choice. It's sad when you see people putting political views ahead of friendships and family.
One of my sister in laws is doing this. She's even cut off one of her own sisters. I haven't stated any political opinions to her one way or the other because I know what will happen. But she posts a ton of hateful stuff on social media & I wish I could unfollow her honestly 😅 I think it's incredibly selfish, or self centered. I'm not sure which word to use. People need to see the world on a bigger picture level. Politics isn't all there is to reality. Family is so much more important on an individual level than whoever won the election in 2024.
Amazing discussion as always. I found your balanced perspectives and circumspection cathartic. I've been playing therapist to some of my liberal/progressive-minded friends and family, trying to quell the hysteria. You ladies are right about their sensitive nervous systems. It's worrying. It felt freeing to be less invested than ever in any particular party or politician. It went the way I figured it would, and I'm relieved. I think if anyone is shocked (and many are) they weren't paying attention in any heterodox fashion, let alone having conversations with their neighbors. On a more positive note, I did not have Progressive Women Lisistrata on my 2024 bingo card...About damn time.
What have you found works/helps in your conversations with your upset friends and family? I'm finding a lot of people I know not in a place to interact much.
@deborahknox2433 First, accept that you can only lead a horse to water-- you can't make them drink. If someone if hell-bent on misunderstanding you, logic and reason will not make a dent in their emotional morass. In these cases, I have either had to disengage entirely when it comes to politics or stick to reassurance-- countering claims of impending doom by keeping my calm and making mild statements like, "I think that's hyperbolic/exaggerated," "Well, time will tell," "We survived his first term just fine," etc. Anyone who is more open to discussion may be receptive to more middle-ground arguments, like opposing cosmetic medical interventions for children (as opposed to adults as well), and emphasizing the harms incurred against their pet victim groups (the medical harms as opposed to the social consequences, for example). I have had success with this strategy. I give you credit for trying. It's not easy.
This leaping to hysteria has to be connected with the technology. Humans tend to need more than consensus building, they need a hierarchy with a leader. I worked on a sheep farm one summer, the herd mentality of the sheep, and the pack teamwork of the sheep dogs and the shepherd seems to fit these patterns of behaviour in people.
It was courageous podcasts like this that encouraged/added to the discussion over the last few years, in ways you all may not even realize. I felt fear - real fear- discussing these issues in an open way not too long ago. Now? Not so much. The best way I can explain it is it felt like being gay in the 1950's. Perhaps I'm not explaining this all very well but I DO want to convey that your voices forced the door open. Not everyone needs to be Joe Rogan to have an impact. Every little bit counts:). So thank you
I absolutely do think that the trump 'disgust' people feel is tied to class like Jenny said. I don't really understand this. I was raised conservative, maybe it's just a 'what were you raised as' thing. My dad would talk in crass ways. I don't like that either, but that's what I classified it as in 2016. I was raised middle or low middle class, not sure if you were all raised upper middle, but it does seem like that now. Ironic, bc Trump was definitely not raised lower middle class.
I love this! The mic volume is uneven though and I find myself having to turn the volume up and down between speakers as I listen. Just something to think about from audio perspective.
The closing comments regarding the avoudance of conflict with family members. That sentiment seems to be an echo of the complaint people levy at the Woke. That they refuse to engage or enter into good faith conversations with people who have different views. I am at the moment thawing a relationship with an Anglucan priest. She has come to realise what the concept of Trans can mean for women and I have been gently and slowly sending her links to let her know I am merely questioning assumptions and I'm not part of some imagined opposition.
A Liberal Arts education should equip the Liberal Artist to detect lies. If a liberal repeats a lie as truth, even in good faith, they have failed being Liberal. 🐿
There's always ample supply of fresh faces to corrupt. That's why the left flagrantly lies. The left deliver proximity bias to naive ears so the naive must 'unlearn' the lie before knowing the truth. 🐿
Regarding European Union versus X: If a product is deemed harmful, aren't countries allowed to block them? Isn't this for instance similar to the US wanting to block TikTok? By the way, personally I prefer X to remain available here in The Netherlands as I see it as a very needed counterweight. And when it comes to for instance many European countries (and Canada) not having met the NATO requirements for many years, can justifiably be condemned. But when you as a US citizen start to dictate what we in the EU should do, I am gonna disagree on principle! Also noteworthy, what started a lot of scepsis in Europe was the US Patriot Act. In Europe we value privacy a lot (or at least did in the recent past). As a result for instance, companies can be fined when there is data like of private information due to bad security, or when sensitive information is stored poorly and no actions are done to improve it. Meanwhile the Patriot Act in a sense makes it impossible for US companies to give guarantees about private information of EU citizens not falling into foreign hands, with the US being a foreign nation from the EU's perspective. Although some legal measures have been taken, the current trade in services, with the Patriot Act still in place, are to some degree based on a pinky promise and a desire to maintain good(ish) relations. With kind regards, Roelof.

Please listen to Mary Harrington in her interview on the Unheard pod cast.
Does she have a recent one regarding the election?
@@deborahknox2433 haven't seen one, but I'm not familiar with her written essays on the Unheard site.
