My favorite part of this line is that he was LITERALLY born into this. His birthday marks the day his father died to save his crew. It's a legacy that followed him around his whole life, and now here he is accepting it and deciding not only that he can live up to his dad, but now wants to follow in his footsteps even as he takes control of his own life. He belongs on his ship with his crew, and has come to release that he wants to be there even without his dad's shadow.
That line was the best part of the film and can't believe it wasn't in this video.

I love how this movie combined with the other two Kelvin timeline films showed a subtle advancement in one aspect of Starfleet technology: starship evacuation.
In Star Trek '09, we see that the USS Kelvin used shuttles for their evacuation, which was successful enough to save 800 lives. However, Star Trek Into Darkness showed the danger of relying on shuttles for evacuation when the Enterprise was falling to Earth. Not everybody could get to the shuttlebay, which had shuttles crashing all over due to the gravity systems failing. This movie had the Kelvin pods, showing us that this Enterprise was refitted to have more easily accessible escape craft that contained the necessities for survival in the event of landing in unknown territory.
I would add a win for how Uhura discovered Krall's identity: with her ears. It was a great scene, and a callback to how she became a communications officer in the first place.

Agreed - her specialty is alien language in the academy so she has an ear for dialects, it makes perfect sense she'd pick up on Krall's speech tells

I really like that this channel exists. As much as we all like to criticise films, it's great to have a different, more positive perspective on some of the more under-rated movies of the modern day.

Should've given them a point for making it so that Uhura was the one that recognized Krall's voice in the video. If it was anyone else I would have a problem with it. But Uhura is a communications expert which means she was either trained or learned over her years of experience, on how to listen to a file of crowded voices and be able to isolate a specific voice from it. It also helps that she spent the most time with him.

I absolutely LOVED Star Trek: Beyond for one main reason: It was ORIGINAL. It was a NEW adventure for these characters we've come to love. Star Trek (2009) and Into Darkness, while both are awesome, are still only reboots.
I can't decide which of the 3 is my favorite, but if some Star Trek fanatic put a gun to my head and asked me to choose, I'd probably say Star Trek: Beyond.
Doesnt make it Trek though. They just slapped Star Trek across the front to pull in those that have never seen the original shows or anything.

1:11 The reason for the change in visualization is due to the advancement in the theoretical physics of actual warp travel. This is what NASA believes warp travel would look like.
Except warp travel will never exist. It is theoretically impossible for anything with mass to move faster than the speed of light.

To my knowledge, the most current "Faster than light" traveling model that could theoretically work, is using a shitton of energy to inflate the Space behind the ship and minimize the space in front of the ship. By doing that the ship itself does not move faster than the speed of light, just the space around it moves. So 1:11 is actually a pretty good visualization of that Concept. The Reason we are very for away from building a "Faster than light" drive like that today is the insane amount of energy needed to bend space like that.
@@cookieSchaedel that might be possible, if we can someday master dark matter. I'm pretty sure it won't for the next few generations, but hey, that's what movies are for, right? To allow us to dream about things that will never be true in our lifetime.

@@atharvadeshpande6907 "master dark matter". That is not really something you can say ... Dark matter is just matter we can't observe. An alcubierre Warpdrive would require a negative energy density which would either require an impossible amount of energy using the Casimir effect or Matter with a negative energy density. As dark matter has mass (it's the only thing we know about it) it must have a positive energy density and is therefore not usable in such a situation.
Another cool thing about the use of Sabotage (and why Kirk's line once it starts playing is extra hilarious): It's the song Kirk plays when he takes his step-dad's car on a joyride in the 1st film.
I WAS JUST GONNA SAY THAT. Too bad he didn't give it a win because the moment the song started, Kirk's smile said it all that he recognized it!

Exactly what I was thinking. It’s like I could picture in his eyes when that song comes on him remembering that moment in his past and getting rejuvenated by it as the two moments were so similar.
For 32 you should have mentioned how Scottie didn’t even use an escape pod, he escaped and piloted himself in a photon torpedo.

Photon Torpedo are _smaller_ than that. It's the Advanced Long-Range Torpedo, the same torpedo made by Khan (I wonder how _Enterprise_ still keep at least one. I thought all were destroyed inside the _Vengeance_ ?)
@@Barri2410 it was probably the one that they opener up and had removed the cryo tube from. Thus it would have no worth to Khan and he wouldn't care about retrieving it.
I absolutely loved Jaylah. I especially give props to the movie for introducing a new female character and NOT having her be Kirk's love interest, or anyone's love interest. Sure, there was some chemistry between her and Scotty, but it felt more like a friendship that could potentially lead to romance (if Jaylah comes back, which I hope she does.)

Star Trek Beyond was the first movie to make me feel sad for the extras (red shirts in this case) dying. Each death, even of characters that had no meaning and were just there to take up screen space, felt impactful in this film

It's not just that the song they use is called Sabotage. It also goes back to the first of the reboot films when little Kirk stole his stepdad's car. The song Kirk plays? Yup, Sabotage. :) "That's a good choice."

Anton was such a huge loss, he had amazing talent on screen and in the voiceover booth and i love that they had that in movie memorial
10:56 -- I nearly whooped in the theatre at that line. THAT WAS CLASSIC JAMES KIRK. CLASSIC STAR TREK. I mean, you'd have to be devoid of all joy not to see it. Pegg and Jung nailed it so well.
I love how Pine's Kirk starting to look and behaving more and more like Shatner's Kirk by each movies. The similarity is both 'scary' and awesome. I just love James Tiberius Kirk so much.
Also this is probably my number one favorite from the reboot. ST '09 is fun and exciting. STID is still awesome (and fun!) People seriously need to give this movie a break.
"Jayla is the best addition to this cast" EXACTLY!! I love her.
One of my favourite details of the film was Kirk and Chekov escaping in 'Kelvin pods' i.e. escape pods for the command crew, fitted to launch from the bridge. As far as I've been able to find, they're something unique to this timeline and make complete sense, given what happened to the USS Kelvin and her captain. Kirk only mentions their name in a throwaway line but I loved the parallel.
Four years later and i still can't believe we lost Anton to such a freak accident.
I'm so glad you mentioned admiral raan. I adore her voice and it's so distinctive.
Dude... Watch the show "The Expanse", if you have not yet. Her voice actress (Shohreh Agdashloo) plays one of the protagonists and is perfectly cast in her role.
She also plays Lakshmi-2 in Destiny 1 and 2, but her role is quite small there.
A lot of you have been saying it sounds like Jurassic Park, and I think you're 100% right. It's actually a very similar scene as well. I thought it was more about the specific notes, but it may just be in my head because the tone of awe and discovery is the same. Very ethereal. Deep down I'm convinced that progression of notes exists somewhere, but either way, Giacchino is the man! And you people are super helpful! Thanks!

Star Trek Beyond was best of the reboots!!!. It was like a giant TOS episode.
TrekVerse and the locations looked really cool. Yorktown was amazing
My father took me to watch this movie in theaters, and aside from some photos and the first fifteen seconds of "the Man Trap," this was the first I'd ever seen of Star Trek. During this movie, the Enterprise gets completely obliterated, and as I was watching the scene in which that happens, I felt inexplicably sad. I had just been introduced to the Enterprise, and yet I almost cried to see it destroyed. And that is the power of Star Trek.
Kind of sad that this series is dead. I liked all of the Abrams movies as a whole, but Beyond really felt like a great step forward for the franchise.
T A B L E : I enjoyed all three movies and have been a fan since 1966 as a teen. I think that the destruction of the Enterprise 1701, in only the third new timeline movies, put me in such a sad state that I failed to enjoy this movie as much as I now do. Each time that I rewatch the new movies, I can better appreciate them. I was hoping for more movies with this fantastic new cast.

It's my second favorite - the first one kind of holds a near and dear place in my heart because I was going through some things in 2009 that were similar to Kirk's. Plus, the movie is just watchable beginning to end. Same as this one. Love how Commodore Paris plays the guiding parent role to Kirk like Pike was in the first two films. I hope she returns in a similar role in the future films.
I still think that Bruce Greenwood's Pike was the most impressive character in any of these films.
I always wondered if the Enterprise bar scene where they toast Chekov was a nod towards Anton's death

It an homage to a scene from Star Trek III when the crew met in Kirk's apartment on Earth to remember Spock who had died at the end of Star Trek II. When they shot it here it was probably written to remember all the crew that was lost in the film but added extra weight when they decided to keep it in after Anton died. Ironically, in ST2 Spock (Nimoy) was behind the camera directing and here Yeltsin (Chekov) was not only kept in the scene but his character was basically Kirk's right hand man through half of the film.
They said somewhere (I can't remember where right now) that the third glass was for Anton
Jaylah is my absolute favorite character. Sofia Boutella solidified herself as my favorite actress with this role. Kingsman built it, Beyond solidified it!
Yeah, and The Mummy kinda ruined it. I mean, she was pretty good in that film IMO, but the film itself sucked.
She's such a fantastic character and I love her unusual speech patterns. "Montgom-e-ry Scot-ty." *Great* addition to the usual gang.
One of the many reasons I love this film was the references to Enterprise. The MACO's, Xindi, Nx class ships, the uniforms, all of it! Really shows this film is a love letter to all of Star Trek not just TOS :)
I hope they make Jaylah part of the Enterprise crew!

That would be great, especially since Alive Eve/Carol Marcus didn’t come back which was my main gripe about this film. They made a point of ending the last movie with Kirk “welcoming her to the family” implying she wasn’t going to be a one-off especially when combined with her Prime timeline backstory. I really had high hopes for what they could have done with her character.
Maybe Jaylah won’t result in the same disappointment
For me, this is my favorite Trek film since First Contact. It's not just another rehash of Wrath of Khan, which let's face it, has been the template for three out of four Trek films between this and First Contact. I was tired of it, and it was so refreshing to finally see a Trek film that returns to having big ideas again, and to see a Star Trek film actually about Trekking. Haven't seen that since... well I hate to say it, but Star Trek 5.
As Scotty says in Into Darkness, "I thought we were explorers." It was a question I had been asking since the Kelvin era started. Glad we actually got to see it this time.
I never liked how Wrath of Khan is somehow the gold standard of Trek films, when by all rights it should be Voyage Home.
K1productions Even though Wrath of Khan is my favorite Trek film, that so many of the movies have copied it kind of diminished its impact a little. So yeah, I agree.

I love these movies. The fact they are a reboot allowed these folks to do justice to the original characters, and make them their own. And my god, they did amazing. I love these movies, Chris Pine and everyone did a fine job living up to the original crew and actors in my opinion. I grew up with the original series and Next Generation, and I am just a huge Trek fan. This was what made a friend of mine give Trek a try finally. I have been a fan since 1987 at age 4. He watched these movies, and enjoyed them. He watched Picard's first episode, and was hooked. And he now understands why, after 35+ years, I have so much emotion and excitement from this franchise as a whole. And now, all these years later since this video, we have shows like Strange New Worlds and Lower Decks showing respect and building new story to Trek as a whole! And it is a GLORIOUS time to be a Trek nerd!
I enjoy this a lot more than Cinema Sins... a tribute to what makes the movie great instead of what they got wrong.. it's all about perception.. good job.
The best of the newer Trek movies. I haven't been the biggest fan of this series but still enjoyed them, but this movie really showed me that they really are the Enterprise crew. They've written these people as believable as they were in the show, and in the case of Kirk, I've never felt more he's a starship captain.
Mass Effect reference is always a win in my books.
I loved how respectful they handled Nimoys death in this film, and hope for the same for Anton Yelchin :-(
The Beastie Boys really are always a win! I literally squeed when the Sabotage scene happened. It's good when the guy financing a Star Trek movie happens to be a fanboy of the same band I love the most. Also, I was so happy about the Enterprise references in this thing.
Also a nice callback to the first Kelvin!Verse film, where Kirk was listening to Sabotage while joyriding the corvette.

IIRC, the whole thing is a weird mythology gag referencing William Shatner's brief foray into music which included a cover of the Beastie Boys' "Sabotaaag".
It gets funnier when you watch other Chris Pine movies and find they've managed to squeeze the song in there for him, like in "This Means War"

Dude, first of all, love the CW videos. Got tired of the "other guy" nitpicking everything. Secondly, I also LOVE Giacchino, the score and Night on the Yorktown in particular. Thirdly, I thought the melody was familiar too, but I think it sounds like something you might have heard in an animated Disney movie, so maybe it just reminds me of that? Keep up the good work!

Eric, that's the schtick of CinemaSins. You can't really take him seriously all the time when he says things like, "That's racist," in response to sexist comments in X-Men: First Class. However, I also like having this channel to balance things out. Nothing wrong with either perspective, it's all for entertainment.

One of my favorite scenes in this movie is Bones going, "You put a tracking device on your girlfriend?!" And Spock pausing before going, "That was not my intention."
Also that Beastie Boys song was the one Kirk put on in the beginning of the first reboot when he crashed his step-father's car. So yay for continuity!

I'd have dinged Kirk complaining that he'd 'torn his shirt again' in the opening scene as it's a real nod to one of the stereotypes common with TOS (and also reminded me of Galaxy Quest, which is always a good thing).
More wins need to be added for the Sabotage scene. That was so awesome!!!!!
Beyond is my favorite of the Kelvin timeline. The references to the original timeline were spot on, the tributes really tug at your heartstrings, and the writing brought out the best in the actors and the plot. If they decide to go for a 4th one, I hope they continue that trend.

I really dig that you embrace _all_ of Star Trek, not just particular bits of it. The thematic and tonal variety among the various series and movies is part of what makes it awesome, to me.
Honestly, my favorite thing about this movie was that Jaylah was never forced to go down to underwear in this. In fact, no women were. It's nice that they finally learned that T&A with no point is actually bad, but a strong, capable woman is something to be admired and focused on, but not sexualized.

I'm not a huge Star Trek fan. I mean, I like the new movies, but I've never seen the old films or shows and frankly, I don't want to. Nothing against them or fans of the old Star Trek, I just prefer the new movies

What was also great about the Beastie Boys was that it was a great callback to when Kirk stole his stepfather's car in Iowa, which tidbit, his stepfather, then, was played also by Greg Gunberg - an excellent bookend between Kelvintrek 1 and Kelvintrek 3!
I think the music was a bit of an adaptation of the Jurassic Park theme tune. IDK it reminded me of that at least.

What i love about the kelvin timeline is that even though the Enterprise gets damaged and eventually destroyed in beyond, they keep it as the constitution class, only refitting it pretty much every movie

Each of the new Star Trek films has been my favourite after a first viewing, this one was no different. You really picked out what was so great about it, and I love this channel :D

I really liked the whole captain's log, the exhaustion from the endlessness and vastness of space because as much as I've always fantasised about space travel but I really felt it.
I'm probably in the minority where Enterprise was my fave series and this film referencing so much of ENT timeline just makes me happy

I really think Enterprise got a lot of flak the show didn't deserve. I really liked it, flaws and everything.
Enterprise just had too much to live up to, and people spoiled by fortunate circumstances comparing it to Trek shows of a different generation.
This movie actually rewrites the Enterprise timeline as the NX-01 is the first ship in star fleet to reach warp 4. Additionally they skipped building a warp 4 engine and went strait to developing the warp 5 use by the NX-01 and other ships of its class for the next 10 years. Lastly at this point star fleet only had the resources to build one ship at a time at 2 year intervals. That star fleet ship could never have existed in the prime timeline.
All that being said yeah I liked Enterprise, I just hate this movie. (And that Beasty Boys Song was irritating, I just can't stand yelling like that in music.)
This is your least favorite of the trilogy? Would've figured you'd think this was the best. Which film do you think holds that spot?
The first one I believe he said in the review of 2009 was his favorite, and it had a lot going for it. I think people just try to create things against it to try and put it down. 2009 was essentially a coming of age point where Kirk had yet to become the leader he always was, and it was showing that growth. Unfortunately, Into Darkness seemed to follow that. Beyond was definitely finally settling them into the roles and demonstrating them as the characters people remember but also showing they are still very much their own characters separate from the originals. I am left wondering how they will replace Yelchin, I can't see them making a new Chekov, at best maybe like a sister or something filling his shoes, but it is still sad knowing that the Chekov we have grown to love will no longer be around.
+Terra Silverspar A few friends and I discussed the Chekov question. and if not in an offscreen incident, then whatever big bad of the next film, if they destroy something of importance, it would be best to say Chekov went down with that location. be it a ship, a station or whatever. But out of respect of the actor and the nature of this being their own thing, it would be best to send him off in as good and noble a way as they can manage.
They can just say he transferred to the Reliant. He doesn't have to die within the universe IMO.
As for replacements there are sevreal characters in TOS who were recurring and might fit the bill. There's also Saavik from the films that might be interesting or bring Jaylah back if a reasonable amount of time has passed in-universe. Comic characters could also be bumped up. Or simply invent a new character especially (looking at the Hollywood landscape) if that's a minority character. The options are endless.

Tor Berggren I don't know about endless, I mean it's pretty obvious that the actor, at this point, can never really come back. As much as I hate to say that, so I just hope they do something respectful like they did with elder Spock.
When I saw this in a theatre and it got to the end credits with the text tributing Nimoy, I smiled. He'd lived a long life and they honored him beautifully. And then the next text read "and for Antin" and I started to openly sob in the theatre because he died so young ans pointlessly. And I started sobbing again just now when you made me realize in hindsight what the Absent Friends toast meant. Damn you.
I really like the camera work with the team meeting shots because it revolves around the group, which implies cohesive discussion and collaboration.
When the beastie boys song started I just got pumped in the theatre
I really like Beyond. All the crew felt more like the original cast but their own version.
Something that I think deserves more recognition is the attack on the Enterprise and how it really highlights the main crew for me.
Chekov and Sulu commandeering the ship in sync, with the wisdom of they've learned from their captains. Not needing the captain to function in emergencies, to the point that Kirk felt safe enough to leave HIS ship in their hands.
Spock identifying the intruders (aka identifying what's wrong and then reporting it to his captain, like the good commander he is)
Bones running around the ship administering emergency first aid to injured crew because he is one of the senior medical officers most qualified for on-the-spot treatments.
Scotty, staying in engineering and giving advice till he was forced to flee in a very creative way. Outsmarting men 100 years his senior with nothing but his wits.
Uhura hearing about trouble and going to deal with it, being a good lieutenant by helping her captain and fearlessly sacrificing herself when the option was provided to her (Like back at into the darkness)
Kirk, of course, being the captain and doing what he has to in order to ensure his ship can continue functioning. Without forgetting the bigger picture while still finding time to hide the artifact with Syl.
All around, I've never really been as proud as I was in this movie for the crew's capabilities and synergy as a group! Even more so than the fight against the swarm! Because it shows that, even apart, they are still one crew. Knowing their place and what they can do.
I’m so happy I’m not the only one who felt that this film was like one more chapter of the original series. Reading everyone’s favorite moments and how they enjoyed the film. It makes me feel like we were all in the same movie theater. I love this channel.
Totally adored this film. My favorite of the three and my favorite film of last year. Can't wait for the next one. Such a great cast and it's a shame they all won't be together again. RIP Anton

As someone who grew up on newer Star Trek I love d that they included the Xindi reference in this movie. I was like finally someone acknowledging that that show existed.

I love hearing about Star Trek from a real Star Trek fan. I'm a hard-core, die-hard, Star Trek fan and I have loved the reboot movies, as I have accepted them for what they are, an alternate timeline. This gives them so much flexibility to go forward. I want to see them reimagine the mirror-universe, or a City on the Edge of Forever story, or perhaps bring back the Doomsday device, the Constellation, and Commodore Decker, or hell, even visit Talos IV. I look forward to more from this crew and will miss Anton Yelchin as Chekov.
The song used at the end to stop the ships was the same song from the first movie when Kirk was in his stepfather's car.

Hey I just want to say thank you so much for formatting you videos with an essay at the end. I'm working on a lengthy project for the book Frankenstein, and I found your comparison between Charles Xavier and Eric to be a great base. I compared the differences between Frankenstein and his monster with their environment as they grew up. And I ended with the fact that they ended up the same way despite their vast differences.

This really was the *best* of the New Trek movies, and the most like Original Trek. The classic episodes were full of starship captains who had crashed on an alien planet and altered either its destiny or their own. They should have made this movie instead of "Into Darkness", a movie that all but squandered the goodwill of old school Trekkies. "Beyond" was the best 50th anniversary film we could have hoped for.
Amazing movie Star Trek Beyond is a movie that surprised me with how awesome it was and I praise it for staying true to og Star Trek Simon Pegg should have wrote these movies all along I love this trilogy but this one has the best writing

This was my favorite out of the three reboots so far. I actually felt some Star Trek pedigree in it. My main plus came from JJ Abrams no longer being involved in it (correction: as a director). I just did not like him as a director. All his films felt same-y, and he was terrible with the lighting. This one just... felt better, for some reason.

8:35 hitting terminal velocity is the equivalent of being in the vacuum of space (where the effects of gravity are not felt, although space it not a true vacuum), maybe they had to trick the engines into thinking they were in space in order to turn on. That's the I saw it, since they specified they had to hit terminal velocity.
This is my favourite of the reboots, because it is the closest to the Star Trek I grew up with (TNG, DS9, Voyager). The first one was all style, very little substance. The second had far more substance than the first, but was still predominently driven by style. This has amazing style, but it is the substance that drives it more so than anything else.
This was easily my favorite of the NuTrek. Mainly cause it directly connected to Enterprise. It got the characters right. And it felt like a really good stand alone episode. I genuinely cried because of how they handled the passing of both Nimoy and Yelchin.
I hope that if they make a 4th film, they market it better and include Ayla (SP?) as a firm replacement while Chekov is off screen serving on the new USS Reliant. No need to mention him other than that, he's first officer on a ship that in this new timeline won't be taken over by Khan.
I am curious if certain world ending events will still happen though. V'Ger and the Whale Probe are still going to happen in this timeline since nothing Nero did would have altered their missions. You have to ask yourself, if Pine Kirk goes back to 1986 Earth to steal some humpback whales would Shatner Kirk also be there? Can the 6th Kelvin movie be a crazy Back to the Future 2 scenario where both casts are in the same past period? Obviously they would need to use Tarkin tech to do it, but in 8 years that won't be an issue.

I thoroughly enjoyed this movie, but my favourite part, hands down, was the dedication to both Nimoy and Yelchin at the end.
