  • This is the review of the LEGO Technic 42141 McLaren F1 race car set that will be released in March 2022, but it is not a model of the 2022 McLaren F1 car. The set has 1432 pieces, and the price is 179,99 EUR/USD. Check out my detailed building review of the set and what do I think about it.

    I'm a big F1 fan, and like technic sets, so I guess I am in the minority saying that I absolutely love this set! It looks superb! I don't mind that it's not the accurate 2022 car, F1 cars evolve from race to race anyway, so you can make a thousand interpretations of a correct model. I like McLaren's last year colour scheme more than the 2022 livery so I don't mind the "wrong" colour scheme either. And when it comes to technic sets, I really don't care about the functions. I buy these sets to be displayed

      I have similar feelings about it! If I just take this set as it is, I think it looks great, especially for a Technic set. Technic sets when based on real vehicles and going for realism are often stuck in this weird middle point where they look close enough but not detailed enough at the same time - I think Balazs talked about this himself in a couple videos. But I think this F1 car does actually look great in that respect.
      I like functions but with this one I don't care, I just want to put it on a shelf. Also I'm by no means a Technic or Lego die hard fan; I only got my first couple sets recently so that's a factor as well.
      And same as you, I actually don't like 2022 McLaren livery all that much compared to this. To me it's actually interesting that this model is different in lots of ways from the real one - it's this kind of alternative history thing. I agree with Balazs that it would maybe make more sense to release set like this after cars were revealed, but I think the real problem is just the messaging around it, having 2022 on the box and all that. The model itself is cool imo and I'll get it for sure. Don't really care if it's true to life :)

    I agree with the point you made in the video - this set is a missed opportunity. They could have either release a fully 2021 car (like they did with SC set) or release this set later in the year - so we could get a proper 2022 livery and more real things from new car. As both F1 and Technic fan I will maybe pick this up at massive discount but still not sure about that.

    As a recent f1 fan and a long time Lego fan I think the fact that it’s a weird mashup of things makes it more interesting, almost like a collectors item, I’ve never built an f1 car in Lego either so I’m still excited for it even if it isn’t the most functional or accurate to the actually car. I think it’s a good looking set and the fact that it isn’t perfect makes it have a great story about all the differences between this set and the 2021 and 2022 cars, its almost like this set is its own car concept separate from the 2021 and 2022 Mclaren cars.

    Not sure if it's already been said, but you can get the steering wheel straight. I had the same problem initially, but you can adjust it by rotating the gear above the steering rack in relation to the steering rack. Note that by the time you realise this (when installing the steering wheel) it is a lot of work to get access to the steering rack gear.

    • @RacingBrick
      @RacingBrick  2 роки тому +1

      You can compensate it by rotating the black 12 tooth gear by one tooth, but since the other 2 gears used have only 8 teeth the steering wheel still won't be perfectly straight.

    This seems like a set that was designed to display alongside the other Technic 1:8 sets, where the criticism has been that the elaborate functions won’t ever be used once they’re completed, as they’re primarily display models. At half the retail price of one of those sets, it might be called a bargain, but as an F1 and Technic fan, I’m not sure that I can justify spending the money on this set due to the inaccuracies and the lack of exciting features.

      If, as you say it's a display piece, then surely the look has to be more accurate. It's effectively an approximation of a generic 2022 F1 car in last year's McLaren colours, it either needs wow functionality or stunning looks, this set is sadly a bit meh on both fronts.

Unfortunately as an older Lego fan re-entering the scene, THIS is my entry point and will be buying one. I have missed all the previous set iterations and I mourn for my loss. At least it is a nice parts pack for my entry into F1 Lego cars and their suspension intricacies. The tires will be a nice addition as well as I have none of these, and I love it's color and shape. I will likely try to stuff motors into it and play with it's tire arrangement with monster truck leanings. Thanks again for your detailed video, and all your insights into the kits that you show!!

    I believe the functionality is great and not lacking like most people are claiming, I mean....do you want it to fly or something? its lego!
    Your issue with the steering can be fixed by changing the orientation slightly of the rod going straight through early on, I also had an issue with the steering not lining up but after re-aligning it the problem was solved.
    Theres too much focus on what this set doesn't do rather than what it does.

    • @RacingBrick
      @RacingBrick  2 роки тому

      As I mentioned in the video, if you are happy with the set as it is, good for you. But that does not mean that your opinion should be everyone's opinion as well. There are other great Technic sets with more functions, even for less money, so this one also could have been better. I already built dozens of Technic sets, and I shared my opinion based on that experience.
      And I won't congratulate LEGO for releasing something with a huge 2022 label on the box that is clearly not the 2022 Formula 1 model, while they could have waited half a year to release a more accurate version. They could have avoided this whole ridiculous process with the sticker update as well, the set won't be available for months anyway.
      About the steering, what you mention improves the situation but does not solve it. Due to the differences in the number of teeth of the gears involved the steering, it still won't be perfectly straight.

      @@RacingBrick I am not saying opinions don't matter, I was just disagreeing with them, as is my opinion. I managed to get the steering wheel lined up perfectly it just took patience, I didn't have a video to build for so I had the opportunity to take my time. Another point about the functionality, if it's lacking so much then please explain what would you like to see included in the set?

    • @RacingBrick
      @RacingBrick  2 роки тому

      @@DeejaySpandex you are totally free to have an opinion about the set, just like I do, and that might be different. The main problem - as I see - is that people rather have opinion about other people's opinion, and not the set itself.
      I already shared in details in the video why I think the set is a missed opportunity. Having only suspension, steering and a fake engine in such a big set simply shows the lack of effort. Functional DRS, lockable differential, even a detachable nose section could add something from a functional point of view that would differentiate it from the $50 sets. Technic should be focusing on functions, and not becoming a lazy platform to build big empty shells that can be sold to casual adult builders with the 18+ tag.

    I am a big Lego Technic and McLaren F1 fan and don’t really understand why Lego couldn’t have just waited until the 2022 car was released or just made it as the 2021 car. It just makes no sense! Surely it would’ve sold a lot better that way. As for the lack of features I’m not too bothered as they won’t hardly get used and the car will just be a display peice.

I really only bought this to display in the mancave and I understood everything with the new regs would be secret however, I wouldn't mind waiting for a more accurate 2022 car or getting a 2021 car. Either way it looks like it will be a fun build and I wouldn't mind displaying it. I do wish it came with slick tires though.

Seeing 2021 livery on a car with SOME 2022 regulation properties, such as the fins on the front tyres etc. I could not figure out for the life of me what year it was supposed to be. After seeing this on discount sale I digged in more. Saw this review and realised all my suspcions where correct, ive decided against this set. Will be interesting once the die hard Lego fans get hold of it and start adding functions. There seems to be a big space in front of the engine to move it forward to make more space for a gearbox, and an actuated DRS will be fun. Not to mention someone will no doubt add body length Venturi tunnels (and they'll probably work better than Mercedes current offer too!!!).

    Big F1 fan and big Lego fan here - I was waiting for McLaren car reveal and video of Dany and Lando unveiling this popped up in my UA-cam and I decided I need to have it. Managed to buy it already and received it on Monday. Last year livery doesn't bother me cause I actually liked it and still have mixed feelings about current one. Car generally meets my expectations - it is 2022 spec car. As for changes they could have done - size doesn't bother me that much but would prefer it on slicks. I think that the idea behind this tires was that this are showdown tires (the tires that team can run for 100km photo session). Suspension setup child be nice if it was modular from the start to easily swap between pull and push rod but it will give me extra fun trying to rebuild it myself. I already have done ideas about improving the design and maybe motorize it. So as a set I would give it 7.5/10. But I hope will bring me more fun trying to reach 10/10. Actually if it was 10/10 from the box would be less fun (that I hope it will be)

    I am a huge F1 fan and a casual builder who loves nice display LEGO models (e.g. Sian, Chiron, but also creatir expert models, like the 911 Turbo) and I can say, I was 100% sure that I will buy this set from the first moment announced officially. F1 cars are simply so rare in modern Lego sets that I could not miss the opportunity. Have to say though, your concerns are absolutely valid and for me they are also quite disturbing. Maybe my biggest problem is with the tires, but the list could go on with the livery, design mistakes, miscommunication regarding the differential lock and so on.
    My personal opinion is that for a pricy set like this LEGO should really add printed tires - new slick tire would also be really nice -, and basically if the 2022 car is impossible to be designed at this point, they should have just go for a classic car. Senna’s McLaren, the 2008 silver arrow, any Ferrari or Red Bull, the options are there with beautiful old cars. And they are unchanged for a time now, so LEGO could have concentrate on the accurate details much more. Or if they want to stick to the very modern F1, let’s simply announce a 2021 version, or wait and announce the 2022 later, when at least the livery is official. As Balazs mentioned, diecast models are also not available from the season start, but when they do, they can be at least accurate.

    As many others commenting here, I am a big F1 fan and a super Lego fan. Honestly, I bought this set as soon as I saw it, exactly for the previously mentioned reasons, and with the idea of exposing it in my office, as at home I have already a huge collection including the Sian (the most difficult lego set I ever assembled), the Liebherr excavator and many others.
    I really agree with all your comments and criticism, nevertheless I still see this set as a must have, because in the end of the day it gives the spirit and the proportions of an F1. I would have loved a more “technic” approach, with many more functions and details, and Michael below is right, maybe a full 2021 Mercedes or Ferrari or Red Bull set would have been much better, but ok, I am having fun anyway , and this is supposed to be the goal, isn’it? :)

    I've just ordered a set and it's on the way. As one of the F1 and Lando's fans, I am excited to build one and display it at home. This will be my first lego technic, so I hope it won't disappoint me. I don't mind about the Livery or design which Lego tried to merge the design and livery of 2021 and 2022. However, there are some features that I wished Lego should have done or given effort to design. The first one is the engine cover. I wished it should have an engine cover piece for those who want to display it as a real f1 car. Secondly, the front wings. It would be nice if there is a feature that the front wing is removable. Third, it would be better if there is a curve on DRS. These are the points that I have seen so far before opening the package and building one.

    I'm both an F1 fan, a McLaren fan and a Lego fan. The reduction in features and increase in cost vs the old generic F1 racing car is disappointing. So is the front wheel choice. I can forgive the inaccuracies due to the timescales of design/'production, but I REALLY hope some modification is possible to flip the suspension to pull-rod up front. I'd swap out the front wheels and tyres too. Overall I like it though.
