The attache case of FRWL is mentioned in Goldfinger. Aboard Goldfinger's private jet, Bond (Sean Connery) asks the stewardess about his attache case (quite innocently!) "So sorry, attache case damaged when examined," she tells 007. I'll bet it was!

I really hate how the exposition for that particular device is handled. Like, Q's so cryptic and I don't understand why. Does he not want Tanner to know that he has given Bond an explosive watch? I miss the days when it was just "Bond, this blows up" and later on he'd use it to blow something up.

    • @CoRektOh

@@calvindyson Yes. Q wants plausible deniability in the case Tanner rats him out to M. Bond at that point was benched. He was not supposed to be on ANY missions. Even the Aston Martin that was supposed to go to him was reassigned to another agent. Q being cagey about giving him the watch makes perfect sense. He does clue him on to the fact that the alarm is very loud. It has a plastic explosive in it like Moonraker.

Good selection. I'd have probably put Bond's credit card lock pick/rappelling watch in there. Dalton's keyring is good, but I wish he actually used the lock pick. Might have even been great had it not worked and he quips about it being in the 10% this lock pick wouldn't open.

And maybe the device for Bond to breath under water with the story of the army asking how they did it because they thought it was real .
The people making the gadgets are really inventive and sometimes ahead of their time !
And the Golden gun of course even if it's not used by Bond but you put the shoe-knife in your list so why not !

I suppose there could be some debate over what constitutes a gadget, and what constitutes a weapon. There's sort of a blurry line there. But... if you're including the shoe with the knife tip, I think it's fair game to ask: What about Oddjob's hat? It's EASILY one of the most iconic items in the entire franchise. Like the shoe, it's a weapon that is worn inconspicuously as an item of clothing. It most certainly has an impact on the plot of the movie, since it is used to kill Tilly Masterson and is ultimately is responsible for Oddjob himself getting electrocuted. Admittedly, there's no actual mechanism in the hat, but its true nature is just as concealed as the shoe, until it's being used.

I think the main issue with Bond gadgets is that over the decades it has become harder to portrays a gadget we don't already have such as the DB5's map/tracker. Now we are treated (?) to gadgets we know cannot exist - the Aston Martin Vanish springs to mind. TBH my #1 is the briefcase simply because as demonstrated by Q it could actually exist. You don't for example get guns or rocket launchers appearing on a car when there was nowhere they could have hidden, or lasers powerful to cut which /cannot/ exist in anything as small as a watch (power source?), and certainly aren't visible anyway.

I have posted my appreciation to David and Joe across the pond also but you absolutely make up the triumvirate of Bond zealots and I await all your videos with excitement. There's so many amazing gadgets I don't even know where to start when it comes to actually picking a favourite. I do however, have a real soft spot for the tracking device in Goldfinger. It's more the look though than anything else, and the fact it tends to foreshadow GPS! I'd argue that Brosnan has the coolest range of gadgets overall though. Love everything in GoldenEye! The laser watch will always have a special place in my heart and is actually up there as one of my favourites now I think about it, but all of his films had some really fun stuff. I used to love the grenade pen, too. Simply because it was a Parker Pen so if you had one, you'd instantly feel like you actually owned a Bond gadget. My Dad actually got one for Christmas last year and I surprisingly felt really jealous about it! The ring in Die Another Day doesn't get enough credit either, I feel - really underrated! (your impression of Donald Pleasence is spot on btw but also how I imagine Dominic Greene to sound if he's getting ganged up on and having a panicking attack)

Am I the only one who thought it was Blofeld himself who killed Kronsteen with the poisoned shoe all this time? 0_0
Also, the knife shoe was so iconic that even the Joker cribbed it for The Dark Knight.

I love the Goldeneye Piton Gun too. In fact, I have a picture of it on display from the 40th anniversary exhibition in London. The Prop makers modified a Ranger brand paintball gun to make it. I have seen some nice replicas of it in various collections over the years.

An overlooked fact: Bond has his "From Russia" Attache briefcase in Goldfinger too. And he has the D5 in Thunderball. So there actually was a nod to reusing gadgets in the early films.

What I like most about the explosive pen or the key chain is that they don't seem like being created for a specific scene. As if Q had literally foreseen Bond's next live threatening situation and created the gadget change his fate. I guess the laser watch also can be added to those two I've mentioned.

My one problem with the exploding pen; why bother disarming it? If the timer was longer, say 10 seconds to a minute (maybe too long?), I could see disarming it for a bit of intimidation, but at four seconds, my advice to you, arm it, drop it, and run!
Still one of my favorite gadgets. 🖊💥

I can explain the thing with the glasses in A View To A Kill. They allowed Bond to see through a one-way window. Not very impressive, but now you know. Some of the other gadgets I like that weren't mentioned are,
Little Nellie chopper from You Only Live Twice
miniature cameras from both OHMSS and Moonraker
    Scaramanga's golden gun from TMWTGG
ski pole gun from The Spy Who Loved Me
identigraph from For Your Eyes Only (even though I know you don't like that one)
    spike yoyo from Octopussy
Felix and Della's lighter from License To Kill
flash-bang gun and glasses detonator from TWINE

Concerning the Keychain: since it is a keychain, I’m tempted to add a few more add-on gadgets to the device. Not too many, as that would make it cluttered, but one or to more will do. I opt for a laser device and a Morse code signal. 👍

I HATED in Skyfall when Q dissed the exploding pen by making it sound old fashioned and silly (especially since the signature gun he offers instead is actually more stupid- and older than the pen since Bond had a sig gun in Licence to Kill- since signature guns are the LAST thing discreet assassins would want tied to them).
I was alos a little confused when Trevalyn didn't care that Boris was playing with Bonds' pen, since he immediately recognised it as a Q gadget; maybe he was distracted or something. Imagine the hilarity that might happen if Bond just told him "Hey, Alec? He's playing with a bomb".

The effect of Bonds sunglasses in AVTAK is a polarising filter - photographers and film makers use them. two thin panes of polarising glass which, by rotating the filter, largely removes reflections and glare from images in certain light situations. The visual effect would have been simply the camera operator/assistant rotating a polarising filter on the camera lens. I guess the Bond glasses give the same effect and would, I assume, work in reality largely as shown.

If Bond gets a gadget, it will be used to save his life before the end. The trope Chekov's Gun could be renamed "Q Gadget" or "Bond Garget". As Eddie Izzard pointed out, Bond never comes back and says "I've got a lot of shtuff left over thish time Q. I didn't need all thoshe thingsh you gave me."
