It wasn't just a pipeline construction site, it was an old silo where nuclear missiles were being dismantled. Kind of the entire reason Renard stole weapons grade plutonium. The idea was to blow up a pipeline with a dirty bomb, making it look like Renard was just being a terrorist, but in reality, irradiating the region where competing pipelines went through so that Electra had the only oil pipe in the region. It's the entire plot of the movie.

Obviously embarrassed to admit that, it's never been spoken of. Anyway, it's not in even the earliest video release.
But as you say, it may also be a kind of Rorschach Test, where people see or feel what so should be there. I actually didn't mind the tarantula thing (I had one for many years). I mean the whole point was that some exotic venomous creature was to kill Bond. Back in the sixties before the Internet most people probably weren't aware that there wasn't a species of tarantula that wasn't poisonous. They likely just thought spiders were creepy much like people do today. I mean it could have been a random snake designed to achieve the same effect (which they did in Live and Let Die).
Plus I thought the orchestral stabs while Bond was crushing said spider was pretty creative.

In defense of number 9: I was under the impression that Dr. No found SOME way to weaponize the venom inside this particular tarantula. It’s not like they grab a tarantula out of a pet shop and dispatch it on bond, also Bond’s reaction (feel free to correct me) would be understandable considering as far as I’m aware, Bond is resting at an island that doesn’t typically have Tarantulas and as such came to the conclusion that this might be a death trap.
Honestly it would’ve been more pants shitting if it was a snake sent to poison him but oh well.

As for M (in the shape of Judy Dench) getting out and about in the field, Bernard Lee's M sinned equally bad, if not worse, in Moonraker.
Bond has reported to his superior that he has found a secret chemical lab of some sort, where he has witnessed the death of two scientists due to a minor spill of an extremely dangerous substance.
And what does his superior do? He makes Bond bring not only himself but also another government hotshot (Sir Frederick Gray - played by Geoffrey Keen) to the lab. They punch the code to open the door, and all three just briskly walks right in to where they up until that very second was absolutely certain laid a secret laboratory that had suffered a deadly chemical spill...!!

I would argue that the windsurfing scene didn't deserve #1 for the same reason the Slidewhistle was. Because I really believe that had the windsurfing scene been REAL, real stunts, real people, real water, real ice (obviously I don't expect the producers to go scouting for the largest surf in the history of mankind or to even create one, although it IS Bond). Doing it for real would have turned it from one of the worst moments to possibly one of the best moments.

In the original novel version of "Dr. No", it's a giant toxic tropical centipede that crawls on Bond while in bed, rather than a spider. Those huge tropical centipedes are extremely lethal to humans, so the tension of that scene actually makes sense in the novel. I assume they changed it to a tarantula in the film because a tarantula is much easier to acquire than a giant tropical centipede, and a tarantula is a lot safer since they aren't lethally toxic like those big centipedes.

I have since thought, if we did not have Bond's brief moment at snowboarding, then we would not have had this champion, and snowboarding itself may have become relegated to perhaps one of history's passing fads like hacky-sack or trolls are from that same time. I have a strong feeling that the only reason Christmas Jones was in TWINE at all was to have a girl Bond could be in bed with at the end. That's the real issue with TWINE, as good as most of it was...it had a split personality. The makers were dipping their toes in the idea of a more serious Bond, which Pierce Brosnan did pull off admirably, but pre-Daniel Craig, they weren't ready to take it as far as it might go, so we still have the quippy ending with Bond in a girl's arms. You'll notice that none of Craig's first three Bond movies have the "Oh, James" ending...you know, where Bond's in the arms of some woman making sly sexual double-entendres. By that point, the new people in charge were willing to push the envelope and try something new. Just imagine how much more effective TWINE would have been if its makers had been that daring...there would have been no Christmas Jones, and the ending would have been Bond and M consoling each other over a drink, each affected by Electra's betrayal. In short, somewhere in TWINE is a Daniel Craig Bond movie trying to get out.

I forgave a lot of crap over the years with many franchises (you don't grow up watching Doctor Who avidly without some advanced degree of the willing suspension of disbelief), but that windsurfing moment was so unbelievable as to be insulting.
Doctor Who managed the same feat with "Kill the Moon", where the moon itself turns out to be a giant egg that hatches and immediately lays an identical moon-egg in its place. (And I don't care if that is a spoiler for someone, you should be thankful for being spared any need to watch that monstrosity.) It really kills a franchise to have those running the show be that insulting to the audience - I stopped eagerly looking forward to new Bond films until "Casino Royale" thankfully redeemed the series (although the personally unwatchable "Quantum of Solace" made me leery again), and I stopped watching Doctor Who as soon as each episode dropped after the whole moon bit. That faith-shattering aspect is why I would rank the windsurfing bit as an uncontestable number one worst Bond moment.

I was too going to make a Doctor Who reference and then I changed my mind thinking that most of the viewers will be American and not that familiar with Doctor Who.
So I suppose I have three points I wish to make.
      1. Yay fantastic another DW fan who also is a James Bond fan.
      2. I agree with your views on Kill the Moon - what a shocker. I mean Who was never that great with the Science but this was an all time low.
      3. I also share you view on the windsurfing. Woeful effects even for that time considering the budget these movies got allocated.
I mean as much as DW is derided for it's special effects, they only in the 60's and 70's had a production team consisting of about 12 people and a budget that barely
would have covered the lunch breaks (if they were even provided). DW for its pathetic budget and intense scheduling actually pulled off some amazing effects for the
time it was aired. It's just that we tend to remember the worse. The 1960's I think only had about 8 staff work on the show EIGHT!
Anyway with sincerity and no sucking up I found it a treat to read your post as it echoes all my thoughts as well. Cheers from Australia

I think the spider scene was actually pretty damn good and genuinly frightening. I don't really mind the fact that tarantulas aren't that venomous, because just about every movie has similar factual errors, just don't think about it too much. Besides, there are similar looking spiders who actually are dangerous, so you could always pretend it is one of those species

Yes, I totally agree. It is clear in that scene that Bond HATES (read H-A-T-E-S) big spiders, and yes some people can be allergic to the bites and yes you can actually die if U are really unlucky. But the main thing is, NOBODY wants to take a bite from a thing like that - or would U?

About Number6 - I have to agree that it was a bit ridiculous that she went all the way to Bolivia or Russia to have a little conversation with Bond, and even more ridiculous to go to Italy to interrogate Mr.White, but it can all be explained -
1)Bolivia - she went there personally because she wanted to take control of Bond and she could not do it behind her desk. Sending agents to take him home would not work, since he is the best agent.
    2) Italy - Mr.White is a part of a mysterious organization, which manipulates and finances terrorism, but MI6 does not know a thing about them, since M is the head of Secret Service she maybe had to take the lead and do it herself. Take account of the fact that she thought it was a totally secret base and that Head of MI6 had to do more than just sitting by the desk.
    3) Russia - She was afraid Bond was unstable. I dont know, russia is hard to explain even for me :(
    4) Die Another Day - it was a matter of international security, head of CIA was there and since M probably wanted to be well informed and in control, she could not have done it through a phone.

The jungle chase in Octopussy is also pretty bad. It contains moments such as Bond escaping from a tiger by telling it to 'sit', and Bond swinging across the jungle yelling like Tarzan.
