I've always heard that the base coat can really affect how vibrant a gold layer will be. Can you do a similar video with your top three colors over the top of different colored base coats (say grey, white, and red) to see how the base coat effects the final look?

    • @tylerttinsley
      @tylerttinsley 3 роки тому +17

Came here to make a similar comment. Not all metallics are made to be painted over black. But I would also say that using only the top three is a bad idea because these paints already are proven to be good with black.
It’s likely not worth making another video

Honestly best looking gold I've seen so far is Vallejo model color Bronze. Yeah it's a bit funny how "bronze" is the best gold but it really is just incredible. To my eye at least it registers far more as a gold that has been forged into armor than any of the gold paints do.

@@jpf338 Well I simply apply it with a brush over primer,it's actually insane how well it covers everything, straight up just one thin coat is all you need. As for the latter question I highlight it by just doing some color mixing,so you know adding some shades of green and purple to it as glazes and then for the shadows I just mix the bronze paint with bit of black, any black will do but I use Kimera kolors for that.
If you're not a fan of manually painting your shadows or you're painting many models at the same time you could just use a wash and it would be fine.

Shortly after the war, my grandfather made decorative shop windows by hand. It was not like today that you can order everything. So he did everything from scratch letters, posters, decor of the site itself. From my mother's stories, I know that he was just using the kind of gold you presented from green stuff world. In addition, he blown it with a glass tube on the decorated surface, sometimes mixed with various types of medium. In Poland, we call this product "gold", we can call it a gold pigment. You can certainly get these pigments from any well-stocked artist store. Sometimes the best solutions are those discovered long ago, why reinvent the wheel :) At least when you mix paints in this way, you can feel like Leonardo da Vinci creating paint from a combination of pigment and egg yolk. Regards, a very factual review you can learn a lot.

A little tip I've learned through the years is if you use a metallic silver or chrome under coat it helps gold paint pop and have a more mirrored metallic finish

I've noticed Gunpla and 40k/Fantasy painters rarely use the same brands of paint. I think you'd be really interested in Mr Color's Mr Metal Gold. It's got a really unique feature of going on with a dull finish that you can then polish by hand and it kinda does the edge highlights for you. Downside is that it's really air brush only.

I've noticed this as well. As an armor modeler myself, I was surprised there wasn't a Mr. Hobby or Tamiya paint in this list. Personally, I like Tamiya Titan Gold.

FYI, I believe the wax based AK True Metal range are designed so that they can be buffed for a smoother metallic effect. The AK Xtreme Metal range are their airbrush metallics - just in case you think you still don't have enough gold paint!

To get a dark gold I mix Citadel Retributor Gold with Vallejo Gun Metal Grey airbrush. As both have a metallic edge to them they blend well and give a really nice deep, dark gold effect 😊 love the video and may well be investing in some P3 paints to see what they're like 👍

The Vallejo Metal Color Gold IS silver with green/yellow ink in it, because it uses aluminum flakes or something like that which is why there's like a dozen silvers and just one gold and I think copper.

I actually enjoy the look of the true metals by abteilung 502. Mineral spirits for thinner. But also I used with blend of oils to weather and then highlight. But for a clean look...Def not. you can buff with them which is cool and it smoothes everything out more.

I printed a horse statue yesterday for a friend and she wantedit to be golden. I bought Vallejo Metal Gold because this range is praised by a lot of people (including several youtubers). I painted the statue this morning and was not very pleased with the colour but thought it might be the light... yeah but i guess this gold is not that great

I was surprised at how poorly the Metal Color did, considering how great my experiences have been with their silvers.
More fuel for the fire of my desire to try more Pro Acryl paints, I suppose. :)

He's not wrong though, the MC gold is dull and lacks the lustre of the scale 75 or the pro acryl. A real step down from their MC other metallics.

    • @Tarrasque87

@@theinternetofrandomthings7796 Its a white gold. It uses aluminium flakes like all the other VMC colours and I think that won't allow for a rich, yellow gold.

I love my Vallejo Model Colour Brass (70.801). It may not be named "gold" but applyed with a brush it looks almost 1:1 like Citadel Retributor Armour when applied with an airbrush. For my SoB I use the Retributor Armour spraycan to prime them and if there´s any gold needed to cover up mistakes, I use the Vallejo Brass.

THE BEST medium for the gold from Greenstuff World is to mix it about 50/50 with a 50/50 of vallejo airbrush thinner and vallejo gloss polyurethane varnish.
This is one of the best golds and the only thing better/more reflective/shinnier is a spaz stix chrome over a super gloss black primer with alclad II candy gold over the top (all thru an airbrush) which is hard to do right, a toxic pain to deal with, and only good for larger surfaces or whole models.

Could have used a shot of the paints behind the models +spoons at the end there.
"Which one's your favorite?" I don't know which one it is...
That really dark gold, my first thought was bad, but literally a second later I thought a character with a darker theme, it'd be a way to make it gold without overpowering the rest of the colors.
For a treasury loot, think I'd lean toward one of those orangy golds, with the saturated over color presentation.
