So they literally touched nothing except the screens and lenses, this seems like a pretty low effort "upgrade" that leaves some very glaring flaws in place. Agreed. Seems like they didn't even try with this one. Just slapped new displays in there, new lens design, and painted the main shell black. For a next gen headset, it looks pretty weak.
It's so frustrating. I've waited for this announcement to decide on my upgrade from my OG vive. And the fact that I even consider to choose between the Index, a 1.5 year old HMD and this one is just sad.
@@minecrafter0505 I would try it out before making your mind up. VR headsets work different for each person as we have different eyes and head sizes. I am owner of HP Reverb G2. And I decided to try out Valve Index recently. The tracking and controllers are superb. But the resolution, common, I cannot play in Valve after HP G2. So I thought it would be nice to have superb tracking and resolution. And here we go, I ordered HTC Vive Pro 2 which, in my opinion, has it all in one.

In about 10 years time when they release another one :( They still can't make Indexes, controllers and particularly basestations quickly enough and they're still selling at the original full price, so I can't see why Valve would bring out another headset when their current one is so sought-after. They also must make a fortune from users buying basestations and knuckles for use with other headsets. They're in a very strong position and have no need to bring another HMD out for the forseeable future.
@@vtidsvr4674 I have a small amount of hope that a company isn't just after profits but wants to innovate and create some amazing technologies, and thus would release a much better headset sooner, regardless of their other predecessor performance. Part of why I give kudos to oculus quest 2, they basically said fuck the history of the quest 1, we need to release this better version to get more people to VR, all at a financial loss.
@@alexkennedy5133 Valve is a business - It's mostly just about profits in reality. FB also gave a huge middle finger to PCVR though. They weren't interested in pushing that further, becaue they went down the mass-adoption route. So you can see it from both sides. Yes they've pushed standalone VR to new limits, and at an initial financial loss (purely the hardware) but they had a 'Rift 2' ready to go and then at the last minute they dropped the project in favour of standalone. 6:10 This is not *as much* of a problem if you use SteamVR and OVR Advanced Settings to calibrate your VR headset. For example, my recommended setting for Valve Index as someone who previously owned an OLED original HTC Vive is 130% brightness in steamVR, and in OVR Advanced Settings: Red 100%, Green 100%, Blue 94%. Brings some of the vivid color back that I missed from OG Vive.
For anyone playing Blade and Sorcery, the Vive wands seem to be easier to use for rapid swordplay (basically the entire game) rather than the Valve Knuckles.
So far i could hear the mic is "ok", the position of the mic is the main issue, that generates the pop sounds. When you look on other headsets where the mic is build in and than compare it to the vive position it is pretty clear what the problem is.
@@MintRobin That's why you should search for a small community, so you can play with them instead of random public users, who this days often are a problem in online games, not only VR.
One of the best reviews of vive pro 2 on UA-cam, especially with a microphone comparison. Speaking about vive pro 2 itself, even tho the upgrade from the original vive pro isnt so spectacular, seems like its easily better option than both valve index and G2, especially for the ppl who just starting with VR. Im think im another one that HTC catch and gonna oreder it in next days. And i rly hope that wont be a waste of money...
I know you touched on it, but in your experience how does the sweetspot/central area of optimal clarity compare to that of the G2. I know it depends on face shape/eye depth etc but for me the G2 was unusable because of the peanut-sized central sweetspot with blurriness elsewhere. Thanks.
Yeah, I'm very annoyed by some aspects of my G2, sweetspot being one of them. I preordered a Pro 2 only to get rid of the G2 asap. I still have an Index, but the visual clarity of a higher res display is addictive. I just can't put up with loss of connection, weird USB behavior, poor build quality, bad software and atrocious FOV anymore. As long as the Pro 2 gets rid of these issues, I'm already happy. All I hope for is an Index replacement with higher res.
@@_kev_ I own an Index and I basically see the Pro 2 as an Index but with higher res. I don't notice the higher refresh rates on the Index so I'm happy with 90hz, and I prefer on-ear audio. The mic does sound pretty disappointing though! My only concern is the sweetspot size and also how much of an improvement will it be over the Index when I'm running a 1080ti (can't get hold of a 30 series). Worst case the sweetspot is crap and I return it and continue with the Index and CV1.
@@_kev_ I'm in the same boat. Love my g2....... When it works. I honestly troubleshoot more than I use it. Wmr is a joke and the things constantly disconnecting, screen going black, sound not working, cord popping out due to its 40mm thickness.. it's not a fun experience for the best clarity. Not worth it. My oculus quest 2 literally never fails and was half the price.
I did personally pre-order the Vive pro 2 while having resold my Valve Index. But the reason are: I had spare light-houses and Vive controllers left behind. I have a Quest 2 for gaming (although not a big gamer). And will be using the Vive Pro 2 for 3D VR modeling and other work. I'm hoping on top of improved resolution to get a lighter comfortable headset and that does not get as hot over long work sessions.
Many thanks for the Review Mike! As an owner of the OG Vive Pro + Index + Base stations + Wireless adapter. I can't wait for the PRO 2. The reason I am buying one is exactly that! BUMP in resolution and FOV. Also having the ability to play in Wireless mode without any VIDEO compression (ulike Quest 2) and swap batteries on the fly (unlike Quest 2) it's a no brainer for me. Looking forward to the Vive Wireless Adapter update as well ^_^ As for games, I am mostly looking forward playing (and developing some AAA VR game mods for games that actually have proper graphics like HL-Alyx).
1. The Wireless Adapter does compress the video, but instead of h.264/h.265 it uses a custom codec which is much less efficient, but also a lot faster. The result is lower latency (but still not equivalent to wired), comparable artifacting and *terrible* resolution (about 3/7 the resolution of the Quest 2). 2. Using the Pro 2 with the wireless adapter is just dumb - you'll be limited to a resolution straight out of 2017 with a promised upgrade to 2019 resolution. If you're OK with that, why not save a ton of money and buy a Cosmos Elite instead? Or why not save even more and just keep using your original Pro? The nominal resolution will be the same. Sure, you lose 1/3 of the subpixels, but you gain the beautiful inky blacks of OLED.
@@hellterminator Interesting. I have both the Quest 2 and the Vive Pro with the Wireless Adapter. I can clearly see macro blocks and resolution problems on the Quest 2 via Link or Air link but no such issue on the Wireless Adapter (unless the emitter is blocked or the signal drops in quality). I couldn't find the spec for the Wireless Adapter regarding the Vive Pro and what is the max resolution it supports, but with the naked eye, I can see a bit lower resolution, but not as low as the Quest 2 resolution. (This on an i9 9900k and RTX 2080Ti). Comparing both of the them SBS, the wireless adapter clearly wins in terms of quality and performance (and actually being able to change the battery). However a lot of people don't care or have the same high standards ^_^ (Just The Wireless Adapter is as expensive as a Quest 2 after all, but you can clearly see the benefits). The only negative I have is that it requires a PCI card so on my Desktop Replacement Laptop I can't use it :( at least not with another external PCI to Thunderbolt enclosure which is bigger than the whole Laptop....)
@@Helifax19 Were you perhaps running low bitrate on the Quest 2? I usually run 100Mbps h.265 and while the image is a bit softer than my Index, I can't really see blocking, but before I upgraded my AP, when I had to run at 30 Mbps, there was very visible blocking. As far as Link goes, something's definitely off about the image and it does block for a second when the scene changes completely (e.g. going from menu to game), but other than that, it's not blocky either. But to be fair, unlike Virtual Desktop, I haven't spent any time tweaking it, so maybe it could be improved.
@@hellterminator I tried everything from 150Mbps to 300Mbps and auto now with the v28 software. It was always adding a lot of GPU overhead to do the encoding which resulted in best case scenario with macroblocks, worst case scenario with frame stuttering longer than 1 second.. v29 seems to have improved this greatly though! (I just checked! So perhaps they did more tweaks there for the 120Hz mode ?! )
@@hellterminator i went back to my og vive for a little bit and the blacks werent a reason to stay.... reading the contents of a pill bottle in alyx is worth the loss in blacks for me. also the zero screen door is probably better then the almost no screen door with the pro ?
1:50 Seems like the Vive and Vive 2 both have the mic in the same spot. Just an open tube leading directly to the mic diaphragm, at 90 deg to the mouth which is spitting wind into it. The mic itself sounds GREAT if you're not spitting wind into it. Too bad they made that hard without modifying it. But the mod is simple... a felt furniture pad over the mic hole. That's it. It acts as a plosive filter and you instantly sound MUCH better.
This is exactly what I was hoping to find before that discount expired! Thanks Oasis for helping me confirm some of the suspicions I had about the headset!
@@VadimZverev His wasn't the best though, he measured fov wrong. I saw him comment on r/vive that he did fov per eye, not both eyes combined, so once you add those numbers together and subtract overlap I think you get around 115 fov. Personally if a review doesn't know how to measure fov, he's not a very credible reviewer. Unless you only have 1 eye like my partner, in which case his fov calcs were great.

Great job with this review, it was very easy to watch it from the start to the end! I haven't had the opportunity of trying it, but more or less from outside, I had the same impressions. The lack of PC VR content may kill the market of high-end headsets... unless PSVR 2 comes to the rescue
i dont know why people have a problem with the original vive wands, ive never had the rings collide, they have sub-millimetre tracking, ok battery life, and im fine with the track pad. the only thing i'd change would be the grip button bc its a bit hard to depress.
I don’t use the microphone very often but that was the dealbreaker for me. It’s pretty pathetic they didn’t fix that. I think I will stick with my Valve Index and G2 until the Index 2 comes out.
@@x32i77 yeah but why? its not like the vive pro 2 is very good especially when its supposed to be next gen. Even if the display is nice its held back by the god awful mic and controllers
Good review! Always seems like HTC is doing too little too late for them to get ahead. Excited for what Valve has to reveal though, hopefully getting some official news soon!
As my Valve Index gets older I get a really, really big issue: Other newer headsets coming out aren't worth the upgrade. If I would just have bought something less good I would have a reason to upgrade by now, but no I have to keep the great Index for longer.
I am interested in getting this headset separately. I got a secondhand OG Vive from a friend, and I am having some complaints about the screen in it. I've noticed that this headset however is fully compatible with the rest of the setup I already have, so it would be really nice.
I'm interested in the resolution and FOV upgrade over my G2, as well as kicking Mixed Reality Portal to the curb. But after this, I'm going to hold off for the Index 2, if that ever comes out. Sure, the Reverb G2 can be a pain to get working, especially in a mixed setup with Index controllers, but it's not bad enough to justify that small of an upgrade, as well as that much of a downgrade in terms of microphone quality. Seriously, HTC, what gives? This is your flagship headset, and it sounds like a $2 clip on mic you find over by the checkout in a convenience store.
Do not forget, you can pre-order or buy the headset only version for $800, so if you already managed to have base stations or Valve Index Knuckels / Vive Wands, and a cord, you can consume it that way too.
That microphone and headphone audio quality makes it seem to me like this would not be a better upgrade over keeping my index because I mostly play VRchat anyway
I picked up an open box deal and got the vive pro 2 for £399. Had to order the index controllers and base stations tho. Headset still in perfect condition.
7:08 - 7:32 . Exactly. I have been making that same argument ever since HTC announced these new headsets. VR game development has so heavily shifted to the Quest now with very little investment in the PCVR space. So why would anyone spend all this money just to play games developed for vastly inferior hardware.
You have plenty of life in G2 left mate. Wait until a truly worthy upgrade brings something new and interesting to the table. Not just a new display and lenses []-)
Once tried the Quest 2 I can no longer be bothered with any wired headset. Unless it's something like the index at the price of Quest 2 or just a bit higher...
Right I've tried most other popular headsets and nothing compares to the Quest 2 still, being able to just go anywhere and not require a PC to play VR is the biggest thing. And at the price point, tbh most companies just don't compete with it.
I personally don't like Facebook tech, but isn't the Q2 better than the index in literally every standard spec other than fov? Why would you pay more for an index (other than the feel of high quality materials etc)
@@MintRobin Yeah mostly better but I do want the higher fov and refresh rate. Why can't there be a product that combines these (at a resonable cost, of course)!
I just bought Index's controllers on their own (I have Vive Pro and 1.0 base stations). They were delivered today. Then I found out Vive Pro 2 is released!! I nearly had a heart attack (knowing nothing about it!). Quickly came across this review and now feeling very happy, no need to upgrade to Vive Pro 2 headset :D. I'm using the wireless kit too. Thanks!
Right now pcvr headsets feel as if they have hit a roadblock and innovation is lacking, the last time we have seen a truly innovative pcvr headset has been the valve index and that headset is already 2 years old and nothing has topped it which is sad. Right now buying anything other than a quest 2 or a valve index just feels dumb. Hopefully valve will release their next headset and it will bring some well needed innovations.

Really the best VR headset that doesn't cost an arm and a leg.
I'd love to see a deeper dive into the vertical field of view and the distortion. Or more specifically a direct comparison to the Index when considering an update from the OG Vive. I've seen other reviews marking FOV and distortion as the biggest drawback of the Pro 2. I'm currently torn between the Index and the Pro 2 to replace my OG Vive and I'm still on the fence on which one I should get. The high resolution of the Pro 2 is tempting, but the refinement of the Index and the fact that it will cost me less pull me towards the other direction... What should I do?
I saw these rumors, too. But they're based on patents which are no indication of actual products being available soon, or ever. Just that they thought of this kind of tech. I've waited months to finally be able to afford an index and then a few months more for the Vive announcement. Kinda tired of waiting...
have been using a quest 2 for 6 months now as my main headset. but if valve release a standalone headset cheaper than the Index then i might upgrade, right now the quest 2 is the best headset imo
Thank you, Thank you, you are the first reviewer that I have seen mention that the 5k needs higher specs to achieve the 5k. Have to say though I haven't looked at them since the release date and most did not even have a review sample just spewed out information. I currently Have a Vive, with the 1.0 stations. Running an ITX build so I do not have the extra pcie slots for the wireless adaptor not to mention that you only get a certain resolution with the wireless adaptor, I also make that comment. Vive doesn't like criticism.. To bad they were blasted by a lot of people that day. :)
I've had the Odyssey +. Sold it and got the Vive Pro. It was not a easy decision but 2 or so years later, I've decided to go back to it. I'm tired of and really haven't a need for the base station's limitations - that is being confined to one small room which ultimately keeps me from using it but a small amount of time when I can steal that. I have no issues with the VPro but not using it becomes the deal breaker.

I hope whatever the next iteration of the Valve Index is, that it keeps those amazing micrphones. Wish Vive had more improvements than just the resolution...
Agreed. Thats why I'm more excited about their Focus 3 announcement, even though its intended for enterprise, than this Pro 2. HTC really needed to integrate all those new technologies into the new headsets, aside from just upping the resolution. The individual peripheral options (eye and face tracking) are ok for us last gen users to give us a quasi-upgrade path...but a new headset should have it all integrated. Shameless self plug on my thoughts: ua-cam.com/video/daIi9h8OO98/v-deo.html
If it had built-in eye tracking and otherwise was the same, I would definitely have grabbed it. Given that it can't use its resolution wirelessly and doesn't support eye-tracking at all yet and it'll be added expense down the line, I guess I'll just stick with the Index. Maybe Index 2 will have eye-tracking.
I dove into VR with Quest 2, as a child of the 80's i had been promised a VR experience from waaaay back lol. I was not disappointed! Also his review kinda says I should buy the pro 2 because I fell very neatly into that category, so he hasn't pushed me away from it at all.
Thanks for the review! Looks like I will be sticking with my Index for a little while longer. Overall I do really like the Index as a complete package, just looking for something that keeps everything that makes it great + higher resolution
Especially the fact that they still are using vive wands. Those remotes are top heavy, uncomfortable, and barely usable in games after you’ve tried index controllers
Hey, I am a gamer with the Pro, and since the wireless is already the Achilles heel, I really would love a review of the Vive Focus 3 with the Airlink PC support, if it can be better PC wireless headset.
I will always wish I could have had a Rift 2. As I said elswhere, if there was a Rift CV1 with better res and lower SDE it'd be my favourite headset ont he market.
This. 100%
For anyone playing Blade and Sorcery, the Vive wands seem to be easier to use for rapid swordplay (basically the entire game) rather than the Valve Knuckles.
Nice, I actually have both
8:12
It also needs a much better mic if anyone is gonna do anything social with it
So far i could hear the mic is "ok", the position of the mic is the main issue, that generates the pop sounds. When you look on other headsets where the mic is build in and than compare it to the vive position it is pretty clear what the problem is.
Not gonna stop me playing beat saber. All social games are full of pre-puberty so I have no interest.

Is the headset any good I was looking to buy one

Great review and amazing shots Mike!!
Thanks for the review Mike!
Looking forward to the Vive Wireless Adapter update as well ^_^
As for games, I am mostly looking forward playing (and developing some AAA VR game mods for games that actually have proper graphics like HL-Alyx).

Your new mic sounds great Mike! 👍
I heard on ThrillSeeker that Valve is likely working on an "Index 2" of sorts. I'd wait a while.

People are always stunned when I'm on zoom call and switch from my regular mic to the Valve Index. I've gotten more compliments for it that than my Elgato Wave 3 mic. I hope whatever the next iteration of the Valve Index is, that it keeps those amazing micrphones. Wish Vive had more improvements than just the resolution...
I have the original vive right now, so I’m looking at the vive pro or the pro 2. Do I absolutely need the new base stations if I go with the pro 2?
Still perfectly happy with my Rift S.

So I have a Rift S, is the upgrade worth it do you think?
I dove into VR with Quest 2, as a child of the 80's i had been promised a VR experience from waaaay back lol. I was not disappointed! It blew me away when i fired up First Steps... it was pretty much what i had in my head. But for me it was a bit too blurry, i also grabbed a Rift S before they sold out but my gaming rig hadn't arrived until a week after the Quest 2.
I immediately saw a massive improvement in visuals on the Rift S over the Quest 2, and i fiddled with that thing for a week! Just couldn't manage to hit the sweet spot, and what i could manage... the pro strap had to be SO TIGHT it was miserable after 20 minutes anyway.
I'm fortunate to have gotten a Rift S, and on the cheap, before they went out of circulation. I don't expect i'll upgrade until next year at the earliest. If it's comfy, and it's clear... you're good to go.

Also would be nice to see if it mixes with the knuckles, since I was unable to mix the quest with other steam devices (vive trackers) using Virtual desktop.
Well I finally did it I’ve been watching this channel for a long time but I stopped because I wasn’t old enough at the time to have a job and I couldn’t afford a vr head set so I got really discouraged about it but I finally bought my first one and I knew I had to share it with you I’m super excited and just downloaded the walking dead
I did cancel my pre-order of Vive Pro 2 today so my Index gets to live on.
Why 😧😧😱?
@@fenriswolf-always-forward I would watch other reviews first . Vodoos eye are sunk in his eye caves

I’m totally good with my Quest 2 with Airlink PCVR and it’s stand-alone ability🤙 But good vid Mike!
Hell yeah. Wireless is great. Ill wait to see what oculus brings us next year.
Right! They are improving the Quest so rapidly I don’t think anyone else can keep up! We’ll see what Play Station brings to the table but at this point I’m not holding my breath on it
Every time I see something about a new VR headset I'm left scratching my head. 3 times of the price of a Q2 and you have to use wires.
@@4879daniel Have you used a good Wired PCVR headset before? It's a far better experience.
@@vtidsvr4674 I've used a valve index and while I do find it better in some ways, the experince isn't better enough to justify an upgrade IMO
I wanna but the headset but I have Nvidia GeForce GTX 1650. Is it compatible?
Looking forward to the review, reddit is going crazy over this headset, so much controversy!!! Goodness why didn't they change that awful mic!!
When a $0.30 microphone just doesnt cut it in an 800 dollar headset.
@@CorporateZombi Haha right??? 🤣
Right now I just ordered mine can’t wait to upgrade from the vive pro
Its sad that i would still have to recomend a quest 2 as a genral pc headset to any pcvr newbies...come on deca gear you are our next hope!
Not sad at all. Quest 2 is amazing for the price.
@Joe R why 2?
@@Jinx-rj7kx if like me, multiplayer with friends and family members. The bomb.
@@Art-Sin very true, i meant sad in the sense that a standalone headset is way better value than a dedicated PC headset
I've had the original Vive for about three years and have used it intermittently. I ordered the pro 2, figured why upgrade my monitor when I can upgrade the headset and go big screen VR for better viewing and experience 120hz vr. So I guess it's mostly impulse which is how I got the original Vive.
i will wait for the quest 3. i am not rich or stupid to buy such thing
Great review, Mike! Keeping it real as always :)
hi everyone this is mike virtual reality oasis, the year is 2056 the quest 35 just came out, time to test it with half life alyx again cuz this never get old
debated on selling my index and hp reverb headset and getting this one.. but now I think I'll just use the reverb with index controllers, and call it good.
ill just be happy with my quest 2 , 2k res 120hz fully wireless hybrid headset only $640 CDN cant be beat not even close
Google for PCVR? Any lag issues!
@Big Bean thank you which bitrate setting do you use for virtual desk?
the valve index's microphone sounds incredible
I will just get the ocules quest 2 and 3,4,5...3000
Facebook are subsidising their headset, as far as I know.
They put a lot of money into it and there you are the product.
@@bot-uz9phbut what if you do have a pc
@@realpoorman3154 Quest 2 is great as a PC headset, especially when used wirelessly.
