I'm still rocking my HTC Vive from 2015. I've upgraded the lenses with the "gear VR mod" from fresnel to smooth, added prescription lenses from VR Optician on top of that (courtesy of a special 3D-printed mount from Etsy that supports both sets of lenses), the Vive Wireless mod, the "deluxe audio" headstrap, and I've fastened a pair of batteries on the curved back of the headstrap with Scotch Fasteners (basically super velcro) so that the entire thing, batteries and all, is contained on my head. The whole thing is heavy, but balanced, so it feels much less restrictive than the weight alone would suggest. And now that I've gone wireless from the PC, I can't go back. My Frankenstein is still the only combination that I've seen that is (1) wireless and (2) natively supports the Steam store out of the box (specifically Sairento and Half-Life: Alyx). I want the Index, but it isn't wireless. The Quest 2 looks great, but it doesn't natively support the Steam store. So for now I'm stuck with my Frankenstein headset.
A lot of games on the Steam store are ironically Rift only, and if you use a Vive, you can't 'natively' play those games. However, if you use Virtual Desktop to play SteamVR with your Quest 2, it's completely wireless and acts like a Rift on Rift games and like a Vive on other games. It's the most convenient, comfortable, and inexpensive solution. I say this as I regularly use my Vive and Vive Pro Eye and only use the Quest 2 every few weeks at most. In my case, the Quest 2 is simply too small for my face/head. I want to get a better strap for the Quest 2 and try using Index controllers with it soon.
@@syrsly273 I'll try looking into that. Thanks for the idea. I'm just concerned about the processing power required by games that assume a wired connection. Can the Quest 2 handle that?

I was also thinking for a experiment kind of system for the headset where vive trackers/cameras could connect to the headset itself (no pc required) and get full body tracking .Also thinking of a experimental system where we use the display port to use the gpu within the HMD as a External GPU, allowing you to play vr games on the pc without a graphics card.
With this, there is atleast a genuine "competitor" for the Quest, even if it's a qualitatively worse product overall. Sooner or later, Valve will release their own implementation of standalone VR as well, and that'll probably be way more competitive and actually worth the money.
You can't call something a competition when it costs 1000 dollars more than its counterpart and is in worse performance in many aspects. Facebook, for instance, is barely profiting off of the headset themselves, as the production price is very similar that of the actual price of the headset.
@@JesoTV FB gets part profit from games on their Oculus store, sure they're at a loss but I doubt it is much when you need games to play it and FB makes up for the loss off of in store profit.
It was clear when HTC released the original Cosmos that they were no longer a credible player in the VR space, haven't seen anything since to change my opinion on that, when they went their separate ways from Valve they just haven't been able to compete.
I've had a Quest 2 for about 4 months ... I cant imagine these limitations! It would be terrible. The battery charging scheme seems outrageous. For the price, the VERY few advantages/improvements seem silly. AND oh the price difference is oh so much.
Even if you get a second battery you can't hot swap them so you have to save everything, shut down, swap batteries, reboot, and then reload all your work... For an enterprise market having the damn thing charge while it's plugged in probably makes 1000% more sense.
I did one a little while back if you search for VR setups episode 1 on my channel. Not much has really changed other than a few tweaks if you want to check it out []-)
My mother gave me this headset for Christmas. I compared it to my Quest and tbh there really wasn't a difference for me. Like the vid said the only distraction for me is the cooling fan. Everything else i like about it. I would say the Vive headset is my 3rd personal favorite Vr Headset.
Amazing that HTC with such long HMD history is still unable or unwilling to make decent lenses with nice wide sweet spot. Rift CV1 got it many years ago, why can't these guys get it right, especially on $1300 HMD. Kudos for having IPD up to 72mm.
I'd wait for the DecaGear, or get the HP Reverb G2 if you can work with slightly sub-optimal tracking, and controllers without capacitive touch (which are why I haven't got a G2 yet)
@@muizzsiddique G2 and DecaGear have basically the same displays, boasting identical specs. Both are a significant jump in clarity from the Rift S. Of course, if you don't feel like there's anything good to upgrade to, don't upgrade
Are you 100% positive you can't charge the headset while you are using it?! Even while wirelessly connected to say, SteamVR and through the barrel connector or USB ports?
But for PCVR its practically garbage, my friend has got one, while i got the Rift S and he always complains about compression, latency and other buggy shit. Wether he used the link cable or completely wireless, even tho people praise the wireless it's basically trash... just compare Beatsaber standalone VS pcvr , then you'll see how fucked up wireless still is.
If they just made this more like the quest it would be killer. It's looks dope and storage add on is great. The angle on the strap seems to be the comfort issue.

@@4879daniel it is but it's still one of the best methods for tracking as it's alot smoother and tracks alot more accurately than current inside out tracking methods. But still I think it's more convenient for companies to start iterating and adding Inside out tracking to their future visors that can be on par with base station level tracking, and we r very close to making that happen in the next couple years so base stations will soon be a thing of the past. We just need the inside out tech to improve alot more, so much so that we will no longer need base stations as a method for accurate tracking.
I was out as soon as you said LCD, in a time when owning an OLED TV at home is fast becoming the meta, those washed out black LCD panels are looking very old hat. For that price tag I'd definitely want an Oled screen, and 120hrz at that!
There has to be a reason all the VR headsets have moved toward LCD. I assume it relates to response time, pixel persistence, etc. Black levels are only one part of the equation to make the experience feel good.
@@Thezuule1 yeh I absolutely agree, I just wish the tech would catch up, after enjoying true blacks on the Q1, LCDs are still taking some getting used to especially on horror games which is what I mainly play. I appreciate LCD screens had more to offer in terms of advancement regards frame rates, resolution etc, maybe when Oleds catch up that will roll out again in future headsets, although I'd bet my house the real reason that tech isn't available yet is because Facebook want to keep cost down at the moment to encourage uptake.
@@dirtytechno4948 the thing though is that none of the new headsets that have come out or are slated to come out seem to be using OLED panels. There has to be some reason behind the scenes if even the premium level PC headsets are sticking with LCD displays. I assume it's some technical thing that just makes them more suited for the kind of low latency stuff you're trying to do with a VR headset. If you're really sold on OLED there's a always Pimax gear but I don't know of anyone else who makes an OLED headset atm.
@@Thezuule1 just did a bit of research and yeh its got to be a costing issue, the latest Samsung S21 has a 2400 x 1080 pixels, 424 PPI AMOled screen that runs at 120hrz, 2 of those would that would piss over any existing lcd display, Colour range, refresh rate, lag and even lower power consumption it wins in all departments, but two AMOled screens (ideally for IPD slider) in a VR headset would drive costing up massively, that's the reason why it's not the meta, the production process is just too costly at this point for it to be viable, a good all rounder is what VR needs right now to keep things cheap and good value, and that is LCD. For now we'll just have to wait. I'll checkout that other Oled thanks for the info.

Great review and I fully agree with a lot: Quests need competition, and this is atleast some form of it and in the right direction. But, its too little, too late and HTC will not have the time to counter. Since they cant make this in consumer price, its already DOA i my mind. Pitty, a consumer version of this was exactly what the standalone industry needed. It looks great and its almost there, but fall short and become irrelevant. The real power of Quest is the enormous amount of resources FB have poured into software devs over the past decade. It will take an heroic effort to even get close, and HTC isnt strong enough to do it. With a Q3 possible around the corner the cycle will start over again: HTC hopelessly far behind on standalone tech and with a softwaresuite that have nothing unique to offer.
People talking about a huge price disparity need to understand THIS ISN'T FOR YOU. This is an enterprise product. The Quest 2 enterprise is $800 then another $180 a year for support. Two years would be $360 on top of $800 so $1160. The Vive is $1300 and includes the two years of support. It's a difference of $140 a unit which isn't really a thing for a large company.
The fan nose is because the Oculus quest 2 is actually underclocking the XR2, (for saving battery life). The Focus uses the chip to its full potential. An unfortunate noise, but a significant improvement to performance,
The review is probably gonna be great as always from Mike, but the headset is most likely gonna suck big time. Index is still on top in terms of how much value you get for that headset
I mean, it's your wallet, but you really have no reason to buy this.
Рік тому+1
I feel like this was a missed opportunity for Vive. I JUST placed an order for the XR Elite and when I learned of this unit, having more field of view and having a higher res, as well as options for eye and face tracking, whereas the XR Elite lacks all this stuff... I feel like I've been ripped but at the same time, the F3 has less RAM and is way more pricey than the XR. So aside from being appealing to businesses (a big ask, compared to the market) I'm starting to feel like I should cancel my order for the XR Elite and just wait out the market again for Steam's Deckard :/ Looking to have a discussion here. I'm very frugal when it comes to buying tech because I want it to hold me over for a while, so I try to weigh out cost-to-tech offerings and I'm feeling like I made a bad move with ordering a XR Elite. (To clear the air, I DON'T want anything to do with Meta. I'm not kosher with being forced to have a facebook account to play games, less risk it being bricked if some social justice warrior manages to get my FB account flagged and banned)

Great informative review. I had higher expectations for this. I think now I will wait on this and or see the what the other ones will be like coming out.
Thanks for taking one for the team m8 :)
Thanks for the honest review. I'm holding on to my OG Quest until ???
how did you make yours more comfortable? I'd love to play more, but it's so frigging front heavy
God damn it. The more time passes the more i'm getting pushed towards a new quest headset.(i have an og quest) If the valve wireless headset (wich isn't even confirmed yet) is not my next headset i'm afraid i'll have to go for the quest 3 or something... i'm patiently waiting for an alternative to the quest for both pcvr and standalone. I'm still really happy with my og quest tbh and there's not too many things that bothers me with it but time is running out. I'll have to connect a facebook account really soon.

Has 4 ir cameras and 2 1440p cameras. I was also thinking for a experiment kind of system for the headset where vive trackers/cameras could connect to the headset itself (no pc required) and get full body tracking

HTC is suffering from Covid layoffs too which made things even worse.
Thanks for the in-depth review and unbias remarks. I was so close to buying it. Thanks for making my decision better.
This headset is what the vive pro 2 should have been
I've had a Quest 2 for about 4 months ... I cant imagine these limitations! It would be terrible. The battery charging scheme seems outrageous. For the price, the VERY few advantages/improvements seem silly. AND oh the price difference is oh so much.
Aimed at business and enterprise markets... 2 hour battery life, can't charge while playing... Does it at least come with an additional battery?
Nope, you have to spend extra
Even if you get a second battery you can't hot swap them so you have to save everything, shut down, swap batteries, reboot, and then reload all your work... For an enterprise market having the damn thing charge while it's plugged in probably makes 1000% more sense.
I wouldn’t have thought the headset mic quality was that good
You took your time with this one. I hope its worth it.

My mother gave me this headset for Christmas. I compared it to my Quest and tbh there really wasn't a difference for me. Like the vid said the only distraction for me is the cooling fan. Everything else i like about it. I would say the Vive headset is my 3rd personal favorite Vr Headset.
What would you say your other two favorites are? I wish testing hmd's before buying was more accessible
love all the new wireless headsets that are coming out!
Amazing that HTC with such long HMD history is still unable or unwilling to make decent lenses with nice wide sweet spot. Rift CV1 got it many years ago, why can't these guys get it right, especially on $1300 HMD. Kudos for having IPD up to 72mm.
The fact that 16 people disliked makes me more sad than the fact that the headset costs $1,300
Alot of people dislike by accident
I can’t see dislikes anymore on UA-cam

I've been looking for an upgrade for my Rift S. Also I'm trying to get off the FB ecosystem.
I'd wait for the DecaGear, or get the HP Reverb G2 if you can work with slightly sub-optimal tracking, and controllers without capacitive touch (which are why I haven't got a G2 yet)
This seems very promising, but it doesn't feel like much of an upgrade from the Rift S.

Hey Mike what are ur thoughts on the valve index 2 do u think it will come soon
Of course it will come, we just don't know when as they r still making the headset
Hopefully it will be cheaper. 1K is a hard to bite on. If the Index was $600 id have bought that
@@ArkonBlade ik, for ppl who already have base stations or had a vive, the index headset is just $500 and well worth the price. But for ppl who don't have any base stations already or any headset for that matter then yea $1k is a bit too much. But if u don't care and r a VR enthusiast then the 1k index kit is by far a great deal for a great headset.
@@tylerdurden6917 I think they need to move away from base stations, it's a non-starter for a lot of people.
Thank you so much for the review. Saved me some money.
Think il just by the valve index.

Great review. I prefer the microphone 🎤 quality of the Quest 2.
Great review and I fully agree with a lot:
Quests need competition, and this is atleast some form of it and in the right direction. With a Q3 possible around the corner the cycle will start over again: HTC hopelessly far behind on standalone tech and with a softwaresuite that have nothing unique to offer.
i cba reading that but i guess ill agree
People talking about a huge price disparity need to understand THIS ISN'T FOR YOU. This is an enterprise product. The Quest 2 enterprise is $800 then another $180 a year for support. Two years would be $360 on top of $800 so $1160. The Vive is $1300 and includes the two years of support. It's a difference of $140 a unit which isn't really a thing for a large company.
Everytime Mike says "Welcome to the Oasis" makes me want to stay to watch the whole video
The fan nose is because the Oculus quest 2 is actually underclocking the XR2, (for saving battery life). The Focus uses the chip to its full potential. An unfortunate noise, but a significant improvement to performance,

Aww, I almost feel slightly cheated out of a cheery held over "welcooooome"! Here's a F for your wallet, Mike! (;
I mean, it's your wallet, but you really have no reason to buy this.
So aside from being appealing to businesses (a big ask, compared to the market) I'm starting to feel like I should cancel my order for the XR Elite and just wait out the market again for Steam's Deckard :/
Looking to have a discussion here.
