Growling is not for everyone, we all understand that. But the music Opeth produce is phenomenal!

Also I doubt many listeners are bothered by you doing Opeth. For the most part, anyone that has the ear to appreciate good progressive music also appreciates what Opeth does.

    Thank you!
Throwing Jana in the deep end with this song. Love this song. The single syllable 'De-vil-guides-the-flame' etc. part is great, glad you both enjoyed it.
I hope more Opeth songs are on the Shuffle.
When she asked who she might know in the band, there is a Steven Wilson connection she might like to know.

Opeth is amazing! The good news is the early stuff is full of softer pieces in between the brutality, and the newer stuff is just straight prog; hardly any metal at all. So, something for everyone's taste!

loved the video! Opeth is one of those bands that people who dont like growls grow to appreciate Mikael's growls because the music is so good lol But at first listen its tough for someone who doesn't listen to death metal

Yep we all go through that. The two bands that got me into growls or extreme vocals was Opeth and Death (mostly their later stuff). Then Gojira and jinjer and bands like that. It’s hard to pull of but when pulled off right it adds an element.

Opera are one of my favourite bands because I love death metal and I love prog so it’s a perfect marriage for me and I also like the later stuff when they are just prog and micheal is an absolute genius

Opeth has TONS of great non growly songs:
    Windowpane
    Face of Melinda
    Moon above sun below
    Lovelorn Crime
    Sorceress
    Harvest
    Burden
    It goes on and on…

the growling is an acquired taste, you get used to it and then you love it. It absolutely adds to their music atmosphere and their prog metal albums wouldn't be NEARLY as good without growling, it's a big part of why it's so good. also, listening to their songs multiple times makes each successive listen better, when you know the song back to back that's where the magic begins. Been listening to them nonstop for the better part of an year, still not tired. To me, the best band to ever exist, ever.
that said, if you just can't get into the growling, all albums from Heritage to the latest are all clean vocals, with less agressive distortion as well, more rock/hard rock, while keeping the phenomenal, flawless quality!

It’s based on a similar event that happened to his friend who had a run in with a mental person that held them hostage at knife point at a lake cabin. The growls are the voice in his head(madness) and his voice, the soft part is also a voice in his head that’s “righteous” and imposed “salvation” through purification.
    Lyrics:
    *Floating on mist
Crept up the caverns of my brain
    Receiving no warning
From nothing to a life code*
Walk with me, you'll never leave
Wait to see your spirit free
Tell me how your heart's in need
As I drown you in the sea
    Unwinding snares of distrust
Your wrist in my fast grip
Look me in the eye, I'm clear
    This is your time
    Face down beneath the waterline
    Gazing into the deep
From love to death in a time span of seconds
Oblivious to regret, pushed into belief
In liquid cellophane gasping for air
Mercy in my eyes is the shade of the night
    Face down beneath the waterline
    Gazing into the deep*
    The piercing sounds you make
    Soaring higher, higher now
And once left in my wake
Your memory is nothing but the scars on me
All over now, forgotten why I needed this
Standing down, disappear into the obscure
Resting days waiting for new disease
    Biding time, looked inside insanity
    It always burns within
    The downward spiral never ends
    When driven into sin
    Your salvation's found in a sinner's deed
All over now, forgotten why I needed this
Standing down, disappear into the obscure
Resting days waiting for new disease
    Biding time, looked inside insanity
The devil guides the way, tells me what to say
Pours himself inside and snuffs the final light
    Deliverance
    Thrown back at me
    Deliverance
    Laughing at me
    Deliverance
    Thrown back at me
    Deliverance
    Laughing at me
    [Instrumental Outro]

Fun reaction! I've grown to like growling vocals in some contexts, although growling itself isn't something that would draw me into a band. Growling vocals provide rhythm and emotion that wouldn't be available through regular singing. I don't usually listen to lyrics anyway so not being able to make them out isn't a huge deal for me, although I do like a good story both lyrically and musically. In Opeth's case, growls are often very fitting to the strong contrasts within the songs. And they do sound badass.
24:04 growling doesn't wreck your voice if done correctly. It's not supposed to be loud like shouting even if it mighth sound like that.

I find Opeth without the growling isn't Opeth. They need the growling and the blend, per why I have more or less dismissed all of their records since Heritage.
This is a good tune, although I think it is a bit repetitive, but some of that is the flow, a little like Jeff Buckley's version of "Kanga-Roo."
Nathan should check out some other bands who blend the growling and clean vocals. Namely like Orphaned Land. He might be surprised. When i got used to it, I discovered a decent list of new bands to get into, that he probably is aware of could happen.
Also FTR: Damnation I find better than all of the post-Heritage albums as well. The songwriting I find to be better. I suppose having Steven Wilson involved helped as well.

    • @NathanOnShuffle
      @NathanOnShuffle  2 роки тому +4

It is true, I do need to branch out a bit and listen to some bands that mix harsh and clean vocals. I know that it is a barrier between discovering a lot of great bands.
I do agree that the more recent Opeth albums without growling are a bit mixed in quality...although I will say that I do like 'Pale Communion' quite a bit. For some reason, their newer style works for me on that one, while Sorceress and In Cauda Venenum leave me a bit cold...
I do also really love Damnation- a really cool record that is probably them at their mellow best (and I wouldn't be surprised if Steven Wilson's involvement has something to do with that).

    • @soakedbearrd
      @soakedbearrd 2 роки тому

The outro is great and very memorable but it stretches out about a min too long. I think their new stuff is great, I mean other than heritage (which is good but a bit “lost”). Pale communion and their last album are top notch and sorceress has many moment too. But I get why oldschool Opeth fans miss their growls and their type of music (which imo still exists in their newer music just different).

Jazz, death metal, prog metal, boss’s nova elements, killer growls and smooth clean voice….yep it’s Opeth.
This is a song I recommend listening to while reading the lyrics. It has a great story and the growls make sense in context.
I would suggest re-listening while reading lyrics, will change the experience. That being said they have many songs that don’t have growls, or songs that are mostly cleans.
Try: Face of Melinda, credence, burden, drapery falls, To bid you farewell, in my time of need.
Or their more proggy rock material, eternal rains will come, all things shall pass, moon above sun below, universal truth.
Btw appreciate the honesty in the reaction.

Opening riff and the part with cleans (devil guides the way...) do much more for me than the outtro. Everyone is lyrical about the outtro of this song. And I agree, it's good, but Opeth has got better outtros. A beautiful beginning of the weekend moreover. First beer and than listening to a nice Opeth reaction. Cheers.

I just don't understand not liking Guttural vocals with the guttural music. Mikael Akerfeldt's main vocal influence was David Vincent of Morbid Angel. From Still Life to Watershed, those were my favorite Opeth years. I don't much like the new stuff, sounds like 70's leftovers from Camel or Jethro Tull. Not my kinda thing.
Opeth has always been about the dark and the light. The good and the evil.
But hey, you gave it a shot.
My ex-wife hated this type of music, me, I love it.
