I do not regret embracing my waves. I'm very grateful for the influencers that helped me along the way. I'm 57, with fine low density wavy hair. Gels and mousses are like adding spray glue on spider webs. I experienced breakage from the sticky texture. Like you, I prefer a "product" free feeling in my hair. I recently returned to glossing products, oh my! The cuticle smoothing is amazing( I don't color my hair). I prefer an "un-coifed" hairstyle, I don't want to sacrifice my precious strands. I can have healthy hair and use heat as needed to maintain my locks. No shame!
Oooo I would love to know what glossing product you tried out please. It's lovely to hear that others feel the same way about their waves and prefer a uncomplicated approach and you are so right heat does not immediately mean damage! 🙌
@@Tori_Hunter try the L'Oreal Elvive Glycolic Gloss line. I also use the L'Oreal LeGloss demi-permanent toning gloss for blending in the grays for my brunette hair, it also comes in blonde shades. John Frieda is another line I have used. Glosses have really helped to smooth my hair cuticle.
Similar hair here & I absolutely LOVE the phrase: “spray glue on spider webs”. That’s exactly what mousses/gels feel like. 👍 Off to explore glossing products!
Amen sister! & Thank you for this post! You have mirrored my “return to my natural hair” journey. I too got tired of being shamed into all of these things & began to see more damage in my hair from not using silicone ( it does protect from heat), or not being able to brush my hair because it is really impossible to use a brush on my wavy hair days, but blow out days I see fewer tangles. The oddest thing is that the first day of my wavy styling is usually my best hair day & each day after it looks meh. The first day I do a blow out my hair looks absolutely amazing & the next is fine but not stupendous. I can go longer between wash days when it’s blown out & I tend to have to wash more frequently with wavy hair. I live on the coast, so I deal with very high humidity & rain & just embrace the frizz (& baseball caps)& I too loved my return to my favorite products with silicone. Basically, us “curly /wavy’s” have the absolute best of both worlds & it’s our hair & our journey & no one will shame me for enjoying my hair & styling it to look my best.
Yes LOVE this - I'm so pleased that there are others out there in the world feeling the same way - let's just enjoy our gorgeous wavy hair (frizz and all) and stop all this shaming nonsense! Thank you so much for watching and taking the time to comment really appreciate it.
"It should be really joyful" all the advice was helpful but that really resonated with me - i was smiling hearing you list all the things wavy hair can do - newly subscribed! I really like your approach!
I would definitely love to see your updated routine! Your hair looks super pretty today 🤩 YAY! I'm so happy you quit the not brushing dry hair bit! It's one aspect of the whole wavy routine I cannot get on board with. My hair tangles so fast as it is that failure to keep it brushed risks me losing clumps of hair or ripping it out because it becomes so tangled.
I started off my curly hair journey not using sulphates or silicones, but I have since reintroduced both (after using a cgm approved shampoo that totally stripped my hair and remembered my previous sulphate shampoos not doing that!) I also saw Manes by Mel explaining that silicones are not bad for your hair...
And I guess that’s why they call it a journey ☺️ so many people commenting to say they’ve had similar experiences of following strict rules only to find their got worse not better. How’s your hair looking these days now you’ve reintroduced sulphates and silicones?
I really love this video Tori and you and your hair look even prettier than normal. I can’t get over how much your hair has grown! I do the simplest of routines too as I just haven’t got the patience to go faffing around with lots of different projects. I would love to see your updated routine. X
You are so kind thank you so much 😊 I’m just in the process of editing my hair growth video and it is amazing how different it’s looking from this time last year in terms of length. Guess you just don’t notice it when it’s on your head 😂 I will get to work on a video to include my updated routine x
Thank you for this video! I have wavy-ish hair and I've been going down a rabbit hole on how to care for it because I feel as if I've been fighting it my entire life. However, it feels so complicated. I LOVE your hair in this video and I would love to know what you're doing for this!
Hi Taylor, I was also in that rabbit hole, I really do recommend a less is more approach because at least even if your hair doesn't quite turn out as you hoped you won't have spent hours and hours 'doing it' 😆 Thanks so much for your lovely comment about my hair - I had tried a completely different blowout method and it held up so so well I couldn't get over it; this was almost frizz free which is unheard of for my hair! I could film a video on it if it would be interesting/helpful.
Great video… Love the honesty! I brush out my hair when it’s dry, but more so to get rid of excess hair before I wash it (twice a week) as otherwise it’s just insane hair down the plug hole 😂. I just try and be really careful, using a bit of oil and starting at the ends etc like you do. I suffer with frizz also and am very interested in re-introducing some silicones. Heat wise. I don’t mind doing the odd blow dry but I will never use a ghd again as I did really damage my hair. I love all the different routines and products out there etc but ultimately no 2 hair types are the same and we all have to do what works for us individually. Unrelated… your nails… are they the stick on ones you used in that Sunday routine video? Are they worth it, how long do they last etc and how do they fair with water, cleaning products etc
Hey Kim, yup you’ve sum it up well; ultimately you just have to work out what suits your hair best and not every method or routine or product will work for everyone! Yes the nails are from glaize, completely stick ons no curing at all - I feature them in my recent video favs and fails. I love them so much and they last so so well!
Great video and it's fascinating to see what you've discovered works and doesn't work for you (over the last year). I think it's great that you're happy and content with how your hair is in multiple different ways 😊I remember your early videos where you had been having so many negative experiences with your hair, before you started wearing your natural waves, so I think it's highly motivating that you feel so flexible and relaxed about your hair now - it shows how far you have come in improving your hair health and knowledge base 👍 I agree about the time sink that multistep routines can be - I don't have the time or motivation to lose hours at at time to styling my hair, especially as I wash it every few days. And you're right, complicated routines can be frizz-causing. I think a lot of them are suited for stronger curl/wave patterns which can handle lots of different products and manipulation without getting frizzy. When I started the CG method (years ago) I tried stretching out the time between washes and it upset my scalp badly so now I wash every 2-3 days (or as necessary if, for example, I've been exercising) for the same reasons you mentioned. If I'm worried about damaging the lengths of my hair I'll apply coconut oil to them before shampooing. Plus, bond repair products exist and help protect hair from wash damage. And 'Yes Please' to an update on your usual routine 👍
Wow Nic we seem to have such similar experiences and feelings about wavy hair. I also sometimes protect my hair with an oil pre wash, but again this was something highly discouraged or 'not allowed' in certain methods. It just goes to show you have to experiment and try things and see what works for you; there is no black & white answer that will work for everyone! Thanks so much for watching and also for taking the time to comment, I really love to hear that other people feel the same way as I do about methods, ingredients and so on 😊 I'll def start planning an updated routine video 👍
I switch between doing a full routine with all those products and brushing it out so my hair just becomes somewhat straight and soft. I’ve been using regular drugstore products with sulfates and silicones for the past year and my hair curls even better than before. So yeah the “anti-silicone and anti-sulfate” routines just don’t make sense. Everything I use now is from the drugstore and almost everything contains silicones. I use volumizing and root lifting products too that specifically contain certain coating types of silicones that are water soluble to create the appearance of thicker hair - this all washes out with sulfates that’s why we need sulfates :) I went more than a decade with minimal haircare believing in “natural is always better” but after the age of 37 my hair would not get shiny or curl, well it needed a good wash with sulfates and some nice silicones - now it’s super healthy and shiny. Never going back to “natural” products. 😊 oh yes and I too wash every 3rd day. 👏👏👏👏
Your hair looks so pretty today. I would love to watch an updated routine and how you get today's look. I really enjoy your content. I also like a soft, product free feeling. I usually air dry. I just found that my dry hair loves shea moisture intensive moisture mask as a leave in. Discovered that by accident but it has helped with frizz. I also have super tangly hair probably cuz I have a lot of highlights.
That's so kind, thank you 😊 I few people have said they'd like to see how I created the look so I'll get that and my updated routine filmed. Thanks so much for taking the time to watch and comment on this video, really appreciate it! Yes I def think if i gave up highlights my hair wouldn't tangle so much but that's not happening so I just find ways and products to manage the tangles 😆
Your hair looks gorgeous today!!! That is 3rd day hair you said??? Wow!!! I am right here with you. I watch Abbey Yung and some Lab Muffin videos too and I also feel like moderation with all this will bring freedom and peace! We know what it is like to abuse our hair and you aren’t suggesting that. It might have taken that approximately 2 years you went through to get your hair in a better state of health, so now enjoy it and have fun!! Thanks for leading the way!!😊 Also, before I wash my hair, I like to brush with a 100% boar bristle brush to spread my natural oils.
Oh it’s so lovely to be surrounded by such positive people like you Sheri. Thank you so much for being part of my channel. Super wise words…moderation brings freedom & peace … LOVE that! Yes absolutely not in anyway promoting destructive behaviour just want people to enjoy their hair and not finding it taxing or frustrating. Wavy hair can be so brilliant to have! I used a different blowout method and it honestly lasted me 5 days - incredible ❤️
hi Tori thank you for sharing some of the habits that you have stopped doing on your hair routine, very informative… oddly enough, l was thinking , specially about dry brushing the hair, it was the way l remember we used to do it back in the day, and l was doing it nit that long ago even, so l started doing it again a few days ago, but without adding any oil to my hair… something that l will do from now on, add a little oil to the hair before brushing it. my only problem was deciding which brush to use since over the last few months l have acquired a whole bunch of them, and for the life of me, l can’t remember which one l used to use before. l decided to go with the tangle teezer… l guess ❓: no denman, bounce curl, etc, for dry brushing? can a comb be used instead? quitting some stuff is good sometimes 😊 l might quit watching videos about hair routines 😊 thank you again Tori p.s your hair looks different, but very nice as per usual! 😊
Hey Rony, I'm amazed by how many people with wavy hair are commenting and agreeing that routines can be overly complicated or more suited to curly hair or they also dry brush their hair - it's lovely to know others feel the same way. To be honest if your hair isn't on the dry side you might not even need to bother with an oil; my hair is dry and prone to frizz which is why oiling first is so helpful. I think you opted for the 'right' brush, a tangle teezer is so nice and gentle. Thanks for your lovely comment about my hair - it was a different look for me; that's the joy of wavy hair right there 😊
Thank you for sharing, Tori. I 100% agree with you and these are the habits I stopped doing too, having similar hair texture to yours. I am also a big fan of the Olaplex leave-in, I just use that and a bit of ColorWow Curly spray on top. Have you tried it yet? It helps me with frizz and adds shine, specially on the crown. Also works as a heat protectant. Your hair never looked better :) Happy 2025!
Happy 2025 to you too Tatiana. The Olaplex leave-in and redken bond repair are def my favourite hair care discoveries of 2024! I don't love the Curly Spray stuff from ColourWow maybe I need to try it again?! x
Fellow wavy - we know what works best on our hair( yes to blowdrying, yes to silicone, wash it when it needs it ) we don't have to be slaves to other people's routines .
Sounds good - I feel like a lot of people are swinging towards science based hair care again. Although you could also sum these changes up as going back to normal, basic hair care - things you probably were already doing before getting sidetracked with the hair community.
Do you use a clarifying or detox shampoo? I have VERY hard water where I live and that is something I think I need to incorporate. Also, do you use any bond repair?
I do use clarifying shampoos as a lot of the shampoos I use these days are sulphate free. But I also don’t get much product build up these days because I’m not layering so many things into my hair. Yes 100% I use bond repair treatments. I’ve got a couple of videos coming soon - 1 about frizz and 1 about hair growth and both I chat about bond repair. I was thinking of doing my favs and fails videos on this topic though…would that be useful do you think?
