I understood the absolute opposite. He said that when he was younger he was obsessed with getting good but at the time of the interview when he looked back he felt like everything artists do including his pas works looks good. I think he meant that the skill level doesn’t really matter, you can enjoy your work at every stage. He even say something close to that on the interview.

He is teaching the right way. We don't learn how to draw from "art classes" and their structured regimented learning. We learn from observation, memory, reconstruction of reality and imagination of reality, at our own pace, at a young age. But he obviously progressed much more than a lot of us, so learning his techniques helps a lot. Now we gotta go try for ourselves and see if we want to work his ideas into our habits. I learned a lot from this talk, thank you Kim Jung Gi!

My. dad was a major illuustrator back in the heyday of commercial illustrator's, and I asked him what he saw when h3e was drawing, and he said a lot of little people. Gi clarified basically, what my dad said to me. It's all in your artistic dreaming mind, which comes from deep study and sweet sweat!

So sad indeed, but it's a joy he tried to teach us his way, as you can understand it was hard for him to explain. The main thing to keep in mind from this video is to "put yourself in the space you're drawing". It makes total sense to be honest, just need to practice more and keep more attention from your daily vision, even mundane (particularly mundane ones). My take is : just enjoy drawing, observe, draw things you like then learn technical stuff time to time, but you should emphasize the dopamine you get from drawing, it must be your priority if you want to draw well one day.

Wonderful interview! I thought Kim Jung Gi explained his process very well here. I loved his encouraging words near the end. An important reminder to just keep going.
The "invisible lines" KJG mentioned are covered in Scott Robertson's great book, How to Draw. It clearly explains how to construct objects as wireframes in perspective. The book focuses mostly on vehicles, but its principles can help you draw any subject with a good sense of form and space.

I would like to say that the ability to visualise is also a spectrum. Some people can only see black and white shapes while others can visualise colours and scenes that is as real as reality itself, while a small percentage of people actually can’t visualise at all.
Those people that don’t have a minds eye have something called “aphantasia” search it up guys, it’s pretty crazy.
You can also be on the opposite side of the spectrum with hyper phantasia which I am pretty sure Kim jung gi is a part of, so when he says some of his students aren’t able to visualise, I feel like they literally aren’t biologically capable of doing it, atleast to his level.
