    Heya fellas, this video was from a siege about two months ago(part of the "300" series), and I didn't want it to be out of chronological order. Some of the "300" battles I've chosen to fight more than once because of their difficulty, but also Epic nature. Believe it or not some of the Sieges to come are BIGGER and more gnarly than this, so hope you enjoyed it!

      Yeah this seems to be the case in my extremely late game campaign but the other factor is the enemies have huge armies and I don't have very many cities or castles left so it's like a maniacal game of music chairs and the enemy is just rampaging and raging on every target I have for them to attack...

    TE-"I've never done a battle of 4000 vs 300."
    Proceeds to go up against even more insane odds and win, lose, or draw, just put on an absolute class on how to do this type of battle.
    Impressive as always. Watching you got me to pick up Bannerlord again. I've always just used basic tactics and couldn't get into the game too much. Now I'm branching out, using more tactics and different types of units, and I'm finding I'm losing a lot less people which means my army really starts to get some elite troops and I can really take on more armies than before. Prior to watching you I wouldn't touch an army I didn't outnumber. They'd crush me with their elite troops. Since picking it back up, while I'm not on your level or anywhere near, I did take on 553 with an army of 225 and won. Being able to take on battles like that makes the game so much more rewarding and fun. So thanks for the inspiration!

    For me, the appeal of a great defence is the story of an overwhelming and awesome enemy being held in check by the sheer will to fight (and smart tactics) of the defenders. Read David Gemmell's "Legend" for an epic example if you want a good fantasy genre story with all these aspects.

    Hey dude, your bannerlord stuff is sick. I'm mainly known for being an Elden Ring invader, but I'm a huge medieval nerd and I cannot stop playing games like Bannerlord and Chivarly 2. I plan to branch out to those games on my channel, although it is a risky move.
    I have always really enjoyed the tactics aspect of bannerlord, mainly for role playing game reasons. It is cool to win impossible battles with your own wit. I destroyed 1200 Sturgians with 400 Legionaries, Sharpshooters, and Banner Knights yesterday. Nothing quite like that feeling.
    And yes you are right, seiges do hit different for some reason. Not sure why. My favorite is the Watchers on the Wall from Game of Thrones. It isn't a traditional siege due to the 600 foot high ice wall, but it is close enough.

    • @HeadlessHorsemanProductions
      @HeadlessHorsemanProductions  2 місяці тому +5

      We're like kin. I LOVE tactics and roleplaying in massive battles. I checked out a few of your vids. I don't think I have the coordination anymore to compare with you young guns, pilot fighter reflexes. I'll probably still to strategy and tactics.
      NOTHING like a great siege for me, just the stress, strain, epic feel, and fight to the last man...

    never underestimate the effectiveness of sturgian heroic line breakers in a siege, form them in square, and when the gates busted have them stand in the gate and they will take 50 enemies out for every one of them lost with a good captain
    my last vanilla campaign, around midgame (getting my first fief), my sturgian heroic line breakers were swinging their axes at super speeds, and it would take roughly 3-4 hits to break a high tier units shield, 1 hit for low tier units, easily able to deal with any enemy that tried to get through the gates, the javelins being thrown over their heads helped

    Awesome. You don't panic and you make good tactical decisions. I like using fians and usually my infantry is in square formation, if you put them in front usually the enemy that is much more numerous will surround them and then the fians will pick them easily shooting at their backs. I was emulating napoleonic wars tactics in open fields to stop cavalry charges, but it turned out useful against infantry as well.

    Archers covering your infantry in a defensive siege like that works so well on Bannerlord for a simple reason : Arrows stagger enemy infantry and restrain them from even attacking your troops. And if they manage to land a hit, either it's on a shield, or on an heavy armour, doing almost no damage. With enough archers, there is so much arrows staggering the enemy infantry that it's almost as if they're getting perma cc'ed until they die.

    • @HeadlessHorsemanProductions
      @HeadlessHorsemanProductions  2 місяці тому

      Yep, it's savagely effective. The best thing for them to do would be to split, shield-wall and charge the archers but then we'd just break our square into an attacking division and cause carnage.

    This was really eye opening on defense tactics. I’m definitely going to put more archer forces on the ground for uphill battles like this. Was there a reason you didn’t prioritize taking out their siege engines? I know getting as many elite enemy kills as possible was mentioned, but would taking out the Ram have helped holding out longer? This was awesome to watch, thanks!

    Sieges like this are so hard because even if you're outnumbered 1 to 5, a 1 to 5 kill ratio wont do. Because once your inital elite troops are gone and militia comes you know you cant keep it up, so you need like a 1 to 10 kill ratio

  • @alex86fire

    Very nice defending. Never thought to let the enemy enter and make a killbox inside the fort. Very nicely done. Of course, I never faced such insane odds :). I don't know how the AI ever got that many units together, I think the biggest pool of armies on one side was a little under 2k troops.
    Also love the editing and the music of the video.
    P.S.

      Thanks for the kind words. I love a great seed. The huge armies are from a very late game campaign. The ax is a custom ax which I no longer have the directions for but I can say look for a short fast ax that's better for seeds than a long slow one

    i always try to knock down the towers and battering ram first. That makes it easier to herd the enemy where i want them to be and cuts down on the breaching locations. A coulda, shoulda, woulda moment for sure. But the battle lasted longer than i expected, a costly win for the enemy.

    Damm, what a pity! Maybe if you were less reckless you would have stayed alive enough to make use of the reinforcement and win!

    It’s a shame this city didn’t have a more defensible fall back location , I’ve won a few where my initial force has kinda lost the gate and there’s hardly any chance to get it back so you run off with most of your men and set up your archers in a little choke and defend from there

      May not have here consistently. This battle was recorded a few months ago, before I really started to focus on siege more and my tactics and polish shows in the sieges to come. Certainly it's better to destroy the ram - and I'm working on a guide that covers things like that.

    I had something similar once, managed to turn sturgian troops into hero unit thanks to a mod and turned a group of 499 sturgian troops in named character XD thats a force to reckon with since all of them become the equivalent of combat oriented lord(who minds you can be a threat on any battlefield) it was my most fun to date bannerlord run and the only one I remained as a mercenary company the entire time. Overwhelmed a siege camp just as they started the siege, had unexpected reinforcement from the ai lord who sallied out his entire force. I'm not sure if the mod still work, but I would love to try this again but with a different faction's troops

    Thing about Thermopylae is there were 300 Spartans but 700 Thespians and Thebans stayed and died as well. The Spartans were a minority of the defending force. What they did have is a very good propaganda system that was so effective that today no one remembers the 700, just the 300🤷‍♂️.

    Excellent defenses on both attempts. I'm curious how you think you'd do if you were able to destroy the ram instead of the siege tower? It might keep the flow of enemies more controlled, and your archers could slaughter enemy forces that make it onto the wall while your elite companions, yourself, and heavy infantry maintain control of the gatehouse. Just a thought for if you ever want to try this again!

    • @HeadlessHorsemanProductions
