I work at Walmart, and when we got these $5 knives in I had to get one because why not. It honestly surprised me and I used it for a month straight and never had an issue with mine. I still use it from time to time.
Orange $10 White $5. Frankly, I like them both for the stunningly low price and what qualities they have. There are probably hundreds of reviews of the orange one, but the white one came out for Christmas this year so it's pretty new. I bought 5 or 6 of the white ones and 3 of the orange ones and just handed them out as cheap Christmas presents. Pretty much a hit all around. I have a pile of knives on the desk besides my computer that I play with and frankly I've fidgeted with these 2 more than any other knives this Christmas. Best $5 and $10 I have ever seen.
💯💯💯 I've been completely ruined for buying any budget knives after having these 2 knives. I sold 25+ knives in the last 2 months. These are IT for budget value beaters. No more search for the "budget Bugout beaters". Or best value knives
Perfect loaner knife, guy at work had this knife he wanted to show me same as this but was liner lock, honestly I did not want to spine wack it with where the lock bar engagement was.
Thanks for doing this, I love all your other reviews but every now and then it is nice to have something very common reviewed just like something very expensive that we can't afford. I have one of these and actually love it. You're the best man, thanks!
I work in precision manufacturing in a related industry. I’ve got bad news for you. Most of the expensive knives on the market cost between $10 and $50 to make. That Walmart knife likely cost about $1 to make. The profit margin on knives is insanely high.
I just bought the red and black ozark trail knife and it was six bucks and it’s worth every penny. Whatever they are doing and however long they do it I’m gonna appreciate it.
I have the white one also but the orange, black & green d2 Ozark knives hold an edge a lot longer. Bought a bunch & gave them to my friends for Xmas. Hoping to get them addicted 😆
Own it it’s ok most come with a soft edge from it being burnt during the sharpening process but yeah it’s great for $5 mine says D2 steel and is in orange
I managed to pick up the orange one in November. I've beat the crap out of it at work(punchout construction). I broke an omega spring but it still works flawless and super sharp.
MC you've been living under a rock... Did you completely miss the $10 D2 Ozark Grail the past 6 months? They still make that (has steel liners) and they have a V2 that has addressed the issues of the V1. This one (linerless) was a limited time Christmas holiday Knife only, and the best $5 spent, I used it 4 nights camping and was surprised still had edge. Between the Ozark Grail and this Storm Trooper, I've been completely ruined for buying any budget knives. I sold 25+ knives in the last 2 months. These are it for budget value beaters. I am only collecting premium featured knives now (titanium, premium steels, fat carbon, etc), no more sub $60 knives. These satisfy every budget/user need.
I have the orange one. I made some micarta scales and slapped em on. It feels like a pretty good knife. It's snappier than my iridium. I like my iridium more but 10 bucks..... BTW the orange one is 10$. They made that one first then did the 5 $ one.
There are quite a few reports of the D2 versions of these having a badly burned blade causeing the edge retention to be pretty poor, but some have tested well, so its a gamble, but a cheap gamble.
I have the orange D2 one... I will trade you it for yhe Excalibur!!! Also when the new orange D2 one came back out they DOUBLED the price... It was $9.97
One UA-camr did a video series on the d2 version and the heat treat on the edge was really bad because of factory belt sharpening messing it up. it dulled after cutting a very small amount of cardboard
Yeah but out of every test ive seen he was the only one. He either got real unlucky or there was an issue from him getting it second hand. @@theperry4134
My guess is that Walmart wanted to get in on a bit of the knife market action, and was willing to take a loss just to get people in the store. In retail they refer to it as a "loss leader." They know they'll lose money on that particular item, but they expect that people will buy other stuff while they're in the store. So now that they've created some buzz about the D2 bladed version, they've quietly replaced it with a visually similar one that they can sell for a modest profit. Walmart is in the business of running competitors out of business, so this is just another standard tactic in their playbook.
I think you should check out the icon knife from harbour freight i think its like 30 bucks not to mention its almost a copy of the begg glimpse its my current edc work knife and so far so good
Highly unlikely; I've sharpened and used WE/Civivi's D2 more than the average person and their D2 is actually quality for the budget tier and is top of the barrel for Chinese D2 despite what all the WE/Civivi knife haters say on Reddit. On the other hand, OUTDOOR55 did tests on the Ozark Trail D2 and although he said it got "slightly better" after his 15th sharpening or so that the majority of the blade was burnt, likely due to the sharpening process during manufacturing. The test showed him making
@ I will be the first one to call out junk. Maybe I did get a great example of a meh knife. I will admit I did not test the factory edge as it was garbage. While sharpening, it felt good on the diamond plate. After reprofiling I did break down a bunch of cardboard. I didn’t do any measuring or counting, but by the pile of crap I had to clean up I was impressed.
As a normal person, i use my knife like 3-5 times per year, usually when cutting food, because what the fuck else would i use a knife for. So a $5 knife looks good. That being said, i still want something like a Kizer Grouper Mini because it looks cool
This one is not d2 only the orange one is to my knowledge my area is not very populated with knife people i suppose i see these and the orange ones at every walmart im in
The last Ozark Trail pocket knife I bought I ended up throwing away 2hrs later. The action was frozen. Once I Finally got it to open I discovered the detent was so poorly manufactured that the knife would just flop open. Par for the course with Ozark in my experience.
My cheap fidget/beater knife. If an omega spring breaks, I’ll get another knife. It’s nice that they use packaging that you don’t need a knife to open.
I feel like something like the cjrb acacia is a much better buy despite technically being 6 times more expensive. I just can’t trust that the quality control of this knife is going to be consistent in any way
Hi MC, I have one of the D2 orange handle models, brand new in the packaging, that I’d be happy to donate to the channel if you’d like it. Just let me know.
Outdoors55 had one, he tested it and found the heat treat is optimal, it didn’t perform like D2 in his un-scientific testing his theory is that a decent amount of the blade behind the edge was burned through manufacturing causeing the heat treat to be different on the edge and a bit behind the edge. That was his theory he also could’ve gotten a lemon.
Considering they have the absolute worst heat treat of any knife I've ever used, I wouldn't consider them "good". I'm talking dull after cutting up a cardboard box bad. Decent knife at best. You're better off spending $25-30 for a CJRB or Sencut. Even a Gerber Paraframe at $15 (on sale) is significantly better.
The knife that created such hate in 2024.. the orange one actually has full liners instead of nested. I saw a vid that if you sharpen it passed the factory bevel the performance is not half bad.
Maybe for you that's what the video convinces you of. But knives are like cars or any other kind of specialty tool, instrument, art supplies, scissors for cutting hair, computers ect.. just because you can buy them for cheap doesn't mean they're as good as a top of the line product in the same category.
@f1nch1312 The pocket knife industry is no different than the wristwatch industry. There's a point of diminishing returns. Past that point, quality only marginally improves, if at all. We're eventually buying clout and the hope that someone will ask about our expensive knife, so we can rant about blade steel. The bottom line is a $150 knife will do 99.99% of the tasks required of a $300 knife.
From what I know outdoors55 debunked these Walmart knives as being just more hype junk because they couldn’t actually heat treat the entire blade correctly and therefore some people got good ones and some people got bad ones. You can tell Ozark Trail really tried though I think they’re pretty OK.
That knife is not the D2 blade. The D2 is the 7.5 inch with an orange handle and is $9.99. The heat treatment is sub par, giving it a burnt edge. Mine also had some burrs right out tge box. I've ground mine down and put a new edge on it, and it seems I've gotten to the better hrc inner steel. I destroy knives at work over time, so I'm currently using it as my work knife. Its $10, so my expectation was that of a $10 wal-mart knife. 🤷🏻
i have this knife. its not good. its a decent enough $5 knife. But being $5 doesn't just automatically make this a good knife, is it a decent knife to pry with and beat on and not worry, YES, is it a worthy edc knife, not even close.

MC! Medford’s Black Card/Mystery Knife is ending very soon. Are you planning on getting one? I just bought mine.
Be safe homie
I work at Walmart, and when we got these $5 knives in I had to get one because why not. It honestly surprised me and I used it for a month straight and never had an issue with mine. I still use it from time to time.
Even though you blurred the image I knew what it was immediately.
Same.

This is a great knife to learn to sharpen on.
I picked up one of the orange ones and use it as an outdoor beater knife and it does just fine.
Correct, the Orange scale one has D2. I bought 5 of them to keep in my vehicles.
I have the white one also but the orange, black & green d2 Ozark knives hold an edge a lot longer. Bought a bunch & gave them to my friends for Xmas. Hoping to get them addicted 😆
I bought the green 10 one, I love the color way more than the orange one
I have this one and I’m not mad about it at all.
Pretty sweet I look for these everywhere I Go

I picked up one of the orange handles for the luz, and it turned out to be a decent beater knife.
I bought both orange and white, gave away the white one. The orange version has full liners and seems a little stronger
I was just given one. I'm quite impressed.
I've got a couple of the orange handle d2, and they are great for around the shop and could care less if I lose them
I have the orange one. I made some micarta scales and slapped em on. It feels like a pretty good knife. It's snappier than my iridium. I like my iridium more but 10 bucks..... BTW the orange one is 10$. They made that one first then did the 5 $ one.
Great content...you are the man
Just diyed mine yesterday and put it back together and it is impressive did a dark blue it's on my reddit page
There are quite a few reports of the D2 versions of these having a badly burned blade causeing the edge retention to be pretty poor, but some have tested well, so its a gamble, but a cheap gamble.
I got the orange one in d2. Carved a knife out of wood with it. Im happy
As others have said, the orange handled one is the D2 version. I got very lucky and got the last one at my local Walmart, and I really like it.
Also like the video said...
Nice cut test
Interesting all the hype around this knife.
I have the orange D2 one... I will trade you it for yhe Excalibur!!! Also when the new orange D2 one came back out they DOUBLED the price... It was $9.97
I bought four of them for Christmas presents this year😂
I was looking for that $10 D2 knife and then I saw this
I got in on the orange (original), they were $10 and so far so good...
Ive been trying to get one for months. I just want to check it out.
One UA-camr did a video series on the d2 version and the heat treat on the edge was really bad because of factory belt sharpening messing it up. it dulled after cutting a very small amount of cardboard
Yeah but no one else got those results and then he made a second video where he got good results.
@ he had to remove a ton of material from the blade to get to the actually properly heated steel, I wouldn’t call that good
Most knives require at least one sharpening before their true performance shines through. Burned edges are pretty common
Yeah but out of every test ive seen he was the only one. He either got real unlucky or there was an issue from him getting it second hand. @@theperry4134
@ the burnt edge stayed even after a bunch of sharpening, he had to remove a considerable amount of steel with a grinder to get to the non burnt stuff
I bought both the White and Oramge one. Part that sucks are the pivots are plastic
My guess is 3cr13 steel or something cheap to that effect. I know the orange was D2

8.8 on the slap
Now let's be honest ...Wal-Mart knives are the DEFINITION of Poopy Pablo 💩
Generally I would agree, but these to are head and shoulders above all the rest of OT sub $10 knives by a pretty sizable margin.
I have both versions, the D2 one, at least the one I got, is holding an edge just as good as some of my Civivi D2 knives……
Highly unlikely; I've sharpened and used WE/Civivi's D2 more than the average person and their D2 is actually quality for the budget tier and is top of the barrel for Chinese D2 despite what all the WE/Civivi knife haters say on Reddit. The orange D2 version is $10. Have one. My son uses it.
They haven't been available anywhere since well before Christmas.
I got them delivered to me directly from the store
I tested 2 examples of this guy, they both performed like 3cr13 always does.
Unsurprising

The D2 version is 8 bucks with the orange handle.
I heard that the coating is true DLC

The D2 was $9.95.
D2 are the orange ones
And also full liners

hell at $5 I'd buy 50 of them, and use them for all the things you KNOW you should never use a knife for, but we all do sometimes anyway.

Vanax?
These are coming in other colors, same with that orange bugout.
Is that a clone of the iridium or the bel air?
That one is $5, the $10 one is the orange one with d2
Guarantee the blade was a factory 2nd from some oem.
Mine was dull as shit and the swedge and grind lines weren't even close to being symmetrical. But, i can't complain for $5 junk drawer knife.

Yeah. I like everyone love pocket knives. But this for 5.00 😮 How every you swing it it doesn’t look great for Benchmade 😂😂

Please do not send that back to me, that is yours to keep lmao

gotta be careful , a couple of mine have recently just started to come apart , I dont think they tighten the screws to spec
