The Helldivers 2 Fiasco - How Sony Got Destroyed
Вставка
- Опубліковано 6 тра 2024
- After Sony decided to try and enforce a completely ridiculous account linking policy, the Helldivers 2 community has risen up and put them in their place.
After hundreds of thousands of negative reviews, and a coordinated effort from the player population, Sony has backed down and overturned their asinine policy, in a massive win for the community that is very well deserved. PC players have managed to show with stone cold clarity that publishers cannot, and should not be able to do whatever they please without repercussions.

Sony probably just wanted more psn accounts for their stats or some nonsense it had nothing to do with banning
right now in the mobile market advertising is being bombarded by shovelware games or the rail shooter one that is made in the cheapest manner possible and i think its purposeful
FYI, Spitz was fired today.
Hey buddy get that Bethesda video ready!
Chop chop!
Well mean no surprise everyone was mad, mean ill give you somewhat credit for covering this considering this is game your reviewed Echelon because as much as LegacyKillaHD was bitching about the Xbox firing crap out of employees and possibly ending companies which is nothing new because its happening with all Western Entertainment and with West as whole trying to kill off smaller companies because its not all Microsoft and Xbox, its also Sony but even with Sony Recalling on their choice to not do that Im still not going to Support Sony and I dont even have PS5, because they will still bend over to Larry Fink and Sweetbaby for Better improved games.
But yes its nice to have good news. Anyways thanks for video, "Question anything? I guess or even just research everything, and yeah Sony goF***yourself.
All Sony had to do was this:
1: do nothing
2: profit.
Instructions unclear. Proceed to take a dump on myself.
Too complicated.
But if they did nothing they wouldn't profit, this whole reason for them to have the account thing is to make profit, however a lot of people are annoyed by this nonsense, especially on pc, we are sick and tired of every damn game or gaming company who pulls this crap, Rockstar EA and Ubisoft all pull this crap and we hate it as PC players, because from our perspective we just purchased the game off of steam we want to play it on Steam only, we don't want to hear that we have to download their stupid ass launcher use our space on our computers for that trash, and not only that we have to sign up for a stupid ass account for their stupid ass server in order to play the game we bought off of steam, there are is just too much compartmentalization, we need a simple platform where we can just play our games not making countless fucking accounts to play the games we purchase, it's bad enough we don't own our games, this is just adding insult to injury, yes I'm sure that account is free and all, however I've been hearing information about Sony wanting to scan your fucking face in order for you to play your fucking games that you purchase with your fucking money, that is unnecessary amount of nonsense that shouldn't ever exist, I don't feel sorry at all for this company, in fact I'm not one of those people who just gave in because they feel like they won this boycott, I'm one of those people who's never going to be a customer of Sony not even on PC, cuz simply I don't trust them I don't trust that they're going to be better in the future I think they're going to do the exact same crap and people would have been idiots supporting them further down the road, it's all or nothing for me if they aren't willing to get rid of this shit across the board all over the place, and they get nothing from me those are my standards as a PC player, and I'm feeling the exact same fucking way when it comes to stupid Rockstar EA and Ubisoft.
And any other company who pulls this shit on the customers on PC, I will not go to consoles I tried that and that was garbage, PC is so much better but it's not that much better when bullshit organizations like this pull this crap on the consumers what's even more crap is when the consumers don't fight back they just take it up the ass regardless the situation. I refuse to be a Slave like everyone else is.
If they do nothing they won't get investor money.
Yep. I don't get how it's so difficult to just... don't do anything. Hopefully they will stop censoring games as well.
Sony: Let's antagonize a community that's used to coordinating to together.

Then why did everyone who got their PSN account issue sorted start celebrating and not care at all about the actual victims in the 100+ countries that lost the game? Notice how no one talks about that.... almost as if the community doesn't care at all about them.
The entire thing was a social experiment 😂
@@Damaged7they didnt loose the game though. Steam removed those countries from FURTHER purchases, as PSN isnt available there, thus no reason to sell the game in those places anymore, and refunded those who wished to be refunded because of this debacle.

@@neonsheep3358 Right on point. The problem with HD2 was that effectively thousands if not millions of players would be robed. And their options was accept the loss or disobey the PSN TOS using a VPN (it's banable).
Most of the gamers don't care about the extra login.
Not the same. They announced it ahead of launch while people can still cancel preorders and have made it clear its for the multiplayer portion only and I doubt most of us will care all that much about it. HD2 required multiplayer to function properly, they announced it months after release and didn't seem inclined to do anything for those who bought the game in countries where making a PSN account required a console.
Personally I have no intention of playing the multiplayer since its a bit of a departure from what I want Ghosts of Tsushima for and I've never cared much for multiplayer addons in a primarily single player open world game (see AC:Brotherhood onward for examples.)
@@neonsheep3358 which is exactly why they try this. if players accept this, they will push further. never give them an inch.

The fact that it went from 12% positive to 66% positive in less than 48hrs is incredible too, I was expecting it to take at least a week before going for at least 50% positive but at the current rate it should be back to mostly positive by next week
And they have seen this as well. And now know that reviews, are not as meaningful if they can change to that degree in a day. They could bot farm to a overwhelmingly positive score with little effort.
We should have left the reviews negative as scorched earth reminder.
@@Gundobald What? No. If they weren't changed then it means that there wasn't any merit for them to backpedal, it shows that we have bargain power, we can give and take it away.
The merit for them to backpedal would've been keeping a larger portion of their player base in a live service game. It was pretty cringe seeing reddit community managers post a "new order, revert your negative review" hours within the Sony announcement.
The underlying issue of WHY they wanted to link to steamids is unaddressed: they wanted to ban people not acting like model citizen soldiers. As far as I know, that overbearing moderation is still on the table.
@@LeMicronaut The whole movement was aimed at the publisher, Sony, for being overbearing and malicious in their application of the account linking. There were also refunds involved.
Reversing the negative reviews is meant to stand in solidarity with Arrowhead, which aren't blameless but their game absolutely does not deserve the negative score it garnered by community response.
@@Ark_Strike According to the Misty tweets, they shared the same aims. "We can already ban people, it'd just make it easier." Overbearing. (Arguably) Malicious. The only real win was getting people who couldn't get a PSN at all the ability to keep playing. The principle of the issue, privacy and conduct enforcement, is still up in the air.

Hot take, Sony didnt caved to the gamers, they caved to Steam, i think Steam giving refunds and delisting the game in many counties to protect it self from possible litigation is what scared Sony not "the gamers" rising up.
Same difference. It's still the customers pushing back.
Maybe, if it was just the reviews I don't think Sony would have cared, but reviews plus refunds and delisting that scared Sony. Because I think it showed Sony that Steam itself was worried about litigation from counties that have better customer protection laws than the US.
Steam gave very few refunds. As someone who requested a refund early on and had very few hours over the two hour limit, they replied with "We're looking into it" and sat on my refund request. But I'm sure the number of refund *requests* put this on Steam's radar and Steam put pressure on Sony.
It was the gamers outrage that caught steam's attention. And then they did what they thought was proper, delisting and refunding since they won't be able to play anyway.
@@trucid2 there were things you could say to immediately get a refund, like mentioning Sony changed the terms of service after purchasing

In a few years this will probably be the norm. Just like in game purchases, account linking to a secondary identifier (email, phone, etc).
June is when they are going to implement it from what I hear.
but why? user data blablabla or do they just want the "active" playstation account number to go up?

Arrowhead still wants to ban people, the Sony Link was just going to make it easier.
The fanbase was trained over these months to coordinate and go balls to the walls. This is simply execution of the training.
The May 6th patch will not be moving forward != linking a PSN account will *never* be required. Don't be surprised to see them push this again once the drama has died down and they figure out a way to sweeten the deal/mitigate the backlash.
I wish more people realized this. We won a skirmish, not a battle, and certainly not the entire war. The worst part is that I know gamers, and I know they’ll cave to Sony on the second round as long as the company handles it with a bit more tact. 😕
One thing I liked about the whole situation is how it was all like one in-game major order and how the community would react.
We had the extreme divers that would spam every possible mission and fight on all front.

My oppinion on all this bullshit is. If im playing on STEAM all I should need is my steam account. I should not need an EA, Ubisoft,PSN account and more. I bought the damn GAME on steam and should only have my steam account to play it.
Sure it take secnds and what not but I should not need a third party account to play a game I paid 59.99+ for.
Man I miss the good old time when all I needed was a CD/DVD and a cd key and then I could F-ing play.
I agree with u, but that means you shoudls tay away from most if not all big publishers... and go all in on small indie games.
The link is there to ensure they can harvest your data to sell to marketing firms, and so that they can reach out and slap you through the PSN if they determine you’ve been naughty in any way on any platform online. It’s partly about control of the PC market, something neither they nor Microsoft have really been able to achieve in any meaningful way yet.
i think it was steam refunds , rather than the bad reviews.
Combination of both. Game with bad reviews will see less attention on sales and will less likely be bought.
And there won’t be many Steam refunds the next time as long as they don’t reopen the game to be sold in the countries that got affected by this decision. Ergo, no financial pressure and they can just smooth it over with the player base over time like everyone else does.
Possibly also lawsuits from countries where scamming your customers is illegal.
This didn't age well... Sony banned MORE countries and continues to require the PSN Account in Helldivers; Echelon here, like many, got played.
Just bear in mind that the purchase restrictions on Steam for 177 countries that PSN do not market to are still in effect of writing this (late on May 7).
Fun fact: still available in the Baltic countries (EU members even) and we do not have access to PSN
As someone from the US, not a PSN delisted country, my outrage was solely directed at the fact that some of our fellow divers wouldn't be able to play with us anymore. It was never about the account. I was about our brothers and sisters, "We dive together or not at all!" became our mantra and I am happy to have participated in this, the most important major order we have ever faced.
FAFO
If Sony is listening here's what you do:
Make account linking optional.
Get Arrowhead to make a badass armorset in your blue and white colors, give it some flavortext about corporate branding and donations to the war effort and award it for linking your account.
Plenty of people will take that exchange and it leaves our Diver's who either don't trust Sony with Info, or aren't able to create an account, able to play the game.
It's that simple.
Try it again and we will rise up against you. That's also, that simple.
Thank you fellow diver from other side of the globe for standing with us.
If they'd put few hundred super credit as reward for linking PSN, I bet people would line up to do that.
Yet… we haven’t gotten what we fought for. Most of those countries are still delisted and unable to buy the game. I think we celebrated too early on this one and Sony knows it.
i'm surprised you didn't cover stellar blade, which had a bigger backlash.
"they sold us a ferrari and we got a toyota"
I mean, it’s still a Ferrari, but with the headlights covered on two paint jobs.
No they sold u a ferrari, but you got a lamborghini... it was a silly thing to get upset about but with that said.. as i understand it they did the change after release and that is not ok.
The point of the Stellar Blade backlash is that Sony went back on promises made and dropped the expected quality of the game as a result. Not by much, but the point is they’re willing to break promises in a way that negatively impacts the player ON GAME RELEASE just to please a tiny fraction of the player base.
Give an inch, a mile will be taken. This is how a frog slowly boils to death, and how Sony fans have gotten acclimated to far more insidious business practices on PS as a whole.
There is something that people miss here.
This time we may have won, but what will happen when this policy is there from the start? Already implemented in some new games from the release?
I doubt that there will be such a backlash. And slowly but surely, they WILL execute their ideas, which WON'T be in our best interests.
And many probably won't even notice.
Exactly.
This is probably inevitable at this point, let’s hope for the best.
Helldiver players went "Remember no Ru... Sonny"
No PSN.
Good to see you cover this topic as quickly you could have done it, upper echelon back at it again, as always epic giraffe
The thing is, Sony already announced that from now on any of their game ported on PC will require an account to be played online. So we got it out just from this game. They will still get what the wanted.
They can do that. I will never play another Sony game. I will play Helldivers, though.
They’ll get it in this game too eventually. All we got from this was an apology letter and a removal of the official date. Watch it come right back in a few months’ time after they’ve left the requirements out in the open on Steam and all the affected nations have remained delisted for a while. There’ll be no justifiable backlash that they’ll have to dodge then because they did it “honestly” this time.
@@OneBiasedOpinion You're severely underestimating the backlash that would cause. It would be the end of their ambitions on Steam for a decade at least. I don't think even they are so myopic. It would also really, really anger Valve. They probably put the message across to Sony that they were on the verge of accepting tens of thousands of refunds for the game. I doubt they will be happy to go through that again.
@@I_am_nobody999 I think it’s more likely that we are underestimating how much Sony cares about that backlash. This is an Overton Shift if ever I saw one, and they’ll be back later once the community’s had a chance to ride this “victory” high and gain a sense of assurance that their game is safe. Then Sony will implement a new policy that is much less aggressive. If this one goes through, they’ll continue slowly adding one policy after another until the proverbial pot has reached a boil without disturbing the frogs inside.
@@OneBiasedOpinion Oh I don't doubt they want to but I do think that their chances of realising their goals with Helldivers, at least, are over. I say this because I was surprised to see a total walking back of the policy. I was expecting to see a compromise that met the needs of those who couldn't sign up for PSN while still catching those who could in their net. I feel that the fact that they backed off completely says a lot. I think they have serious ambitions over the next few years where the PC market is concerned. Helldivers 2 will have taught them two lessons: 1. The market is more fertile than they were aware, and 2. that Steam users are far more skittish than their console counterparts. I don't doubt that future releases (Ghosts of Tshushima) will be subject to this nonsense, but I can't see them being so thickheaded as to poke the beast a second time when they have already found success despite their best efforts at clutching defeat from the jaws of victory. I wouldn't be entirely surprised if I was wrong, but it would leave me a little speechless at the ineptitude of Sony if you are eventually proven right.
Only time will tell.

To be honest, steam should just not let any games on their platform to force players to create an external account.
So onyly indie games on steam then 🤣
I don't like how people usually only take into account the negative reviews, as if Sony cared. I'm positive they started to reconsider when people were asking for refunds and Steam was enforcing these.
That and the threat of a hellbomb of a class action lawsuit from all the players they sold a game to that can no longer play it. Still, it was likely the negative campaign online and review bombing that got Steam's attention quickly and made them decide to delist the game and offer refunds after looking into the situation, so it played a part.
I doubt they cared steam was paying refunds out of their own pockets. Their top seller going down the toilet and steam threatening not to sell future releases probably had more to do with it. Let's be honest a boycott from 80% of Helldivers on Sony products plus the word of mouth when any of our non diver friends start talking about future ps releases and we stop them. Pretty much the exact opposite of us telling everyone we know to play Helldivers with us. I'm still not going to renew my psn account and switch to PC full-time. I still put some blame on Arrowhead for the fact that they knew this was something that Sony was going to do months in advance. If there has been constant that has been growing in the gaming industry is that developers and publishers are proving to be interchangeable with the amount of lies and deceit in the industry.
I'm of the opinion that what Sony did with Helldivers is different than what they're going to do with Ghost of Tsushima. HD2 launched and was operational for months before Sony tried to force people to make and link PSN accounts in order to continue playing the game on PC; this was a tubgirl-level bedshitting event and I'm glad to have been part of the effort to LIBERATE the game from this being a requirement. Ghosts has not launched yet, and Sony is being up-front about this stupid account linking requirement before anyone has purchased and played the game on PC. While I still resent being required to link my account to anything, the HD2 situation was very different from Ghosts.
yet the game is made by the same publisher... stay away!

This isn’t over, but this is a major victory.
We dive together or not at all.
We need to push hard. We need to demand Valve/Steam force all developers remove DRM/Third Party account Requirements from the games sold on steam or face being banned from selling on steam. Kick these Shit companies and their shit games off of Steam.
One thing I love about gog. Download the games and own the games forever. Do have back up copies of all my favorites that work with proton. The company heads definitely seem infected with the mindvirus lately though. The alternative is hoping Gaben is secretly immortal as I don't think anyone decent could afford the taxes on inheriting steam. Might be possible that only gamers with steam libraries can bid on limited amounts of the company shares in his will to keep it out of bridges hands for a while.
This is what the industry needs more of.. We need to stop letting the big ones get what they want. No more just letting anti consumer decisions fly because we cant do anything.. We can. and this and Tarkov absolutely show that..
Steam delisting the game was key here. The community reaction might have gotten there eventually, but losing markets and potentially having to do refunds is probably the reason it happened so fast.
Protip: Don't piss off a community that is so dedicated that they are willing to kill 2 million space bugs in record time because of some arbitrary in-game order. They will absolutely unite together to defeat an overwhelming enemy, and that includes faceless greedy corpo suits.
If only we could have done this for the injectionobonanza of the past four years. But no a video game is more important than our bodily autonomy... This game is a psyop and I for real have 200 hours on the game. This is bad.
DEMOCRACY WILL NOT BE STOPPED!!!
also jfc the lewd bots in the replies....
I did my part, did my part for Tarkov too, doing my part from now on. I want there to be games the new generations can enjoy like I did, I want there to be a future at all in gaming.
Thank you everyone else who participated in the event.
Those 4 legged alien look like they are from Osiris New Dawn....
it was EU VS SONY ... the community did nothing , bra ... EU repercussions of this would be fun for Sony ...
Sony hasn't lost they are just buying time to deal with the legal issues from selling the game in country's that wont be able to play. They have not removed "Requires 3rd-Party Account: PlayStation Network" from the Steam page. All they have done is delay the requirement this is no total victory this is no victory at all Sony is playing them. I haven't and wont buy the game until "Requires 3rd-Party Account: PlayStation Network" is removed from the store page. Until it is all they have done is make a temporary retreat. This false idea that the players have one needs to stop its not over until there is a legal commitment from Sony.
Yes. Sony has temporarily suspended hostilities but its ultimate objective is unchanged. This is a truce, not the end of the war.
This game has been successfully training gamers to stand a united front against a common enemy. How Sony thought they would win is beyond me lmao.
Kotaku ain't happy.
PC gamers really do have power 😆👌 I can't say the same for console players though.
We do too, we just stop playing the game. Stop buying stuff. Slightly slower but it works
And that is why we are the master race
@@silvergamer7250 Yeah but the average console player I guess tend to not care as much if not all and go like oh well and do nothing.
@@danteshollowedgrounds I’m a console player, we care. We care a lot
@@dankmemes8254 True so true and couldn't be more far from the truth 😂🤣👌
I don't know why Sony thought was a good idea to not only do this to a game that's extremely popular - but a game that has _literally_ indoctrinated its fanbase with not just pro-consumer activities, but taking full advantage of the propaganda from the game, turning it into a meme, and essentially weaponizing it into a political force.
I've never seen this in a game community before, and it only worked because of the unique circumstances. I sincerely hope this now spreads across the entirety of gaming to put corporations in their place.
For the record, I did review bomb the game, and reverse my review after the change was reversed. For democracy and Super Earth!
It's still pretty surreal to have been a part of that and it having ppl like Upper Echelon and other big youtubers talking about it just intensifies the feeling of dreaming
I don't play Helldivers, but I'm happy that the players were able to it to Sony. The more humble pie those execs have to eat the better.
Now if only we could reverse the censorship of Stellar Blade and Senran Kagura.
There is still one mission side quest to complete: Remove Spitz. He's been an absolute thorn in the shoe of EVERYONE that has legitimate concerns over a product they purchased. Get rid of him.
first of, nah; hell he was supportive of reviewbombing.
second: you got what you wished for lmao he got booted at the behest of sony
as far as i know.. he isn't a CM anymore... at least not if discord-roles are any indication.. the problem.. spitz isnt the only one.. baskinator and this misty-person are ( in my opinion ) even worse then spitz.
@@ayrendraganas8686 No he wasn't he was one of the first CMs to start throwing fuel onto the flames, then backtracked.
@@ayrendraganas8686he was after he got ratio’d for doing the exact opposite and sucking sony off
@@ayrendraganas8686
Spitz has been a kunt since the game released. He has stoked every single issue and gone out of his way to piss people off for literally no other reason than he's a CM. F*ck him. He was only supportive of the community when he was completely out of line and he knew he needed to backpedal. The guy is just a run-of-the-mill Discord mod and nothing of value was lost by ditching him.
Still not putting Ring 0 anticheat on a bare metal system, and from what I hear Helldivers 2 doesn't like running on a VM. 🤷♂
This was the best hostage rescue mission in all of helldivers
Something I realized that not a lot of people are talking about is the fact that Sony allowed the sale of Helldivers 2 and maybe some of their other PC ports to those countries where PSN isn’t supported. If they went through with this, shouldn’t that of been something to be considered?
This is why i pirate games. Because taking the risk of having a trojan/virus still better than getting scammed out of blue.
I have a thing for organizing and leading teams. Watching this whole thing go down in such an efficient and coordinated manner felt so good. It's nice to fight and win for a change!
Ok I'm seeing a lot of people saying this but Steam DOES sometimes give you refunds for games over 2 hours. This isn't guarenteed but it can happen. You can even see it when you get a refund: "Refunds aren't TPYICALLY issued for games over 2 hours of game time"
Thanks. This is the type of content I joined your channel for, years and years ago.
I neither play the game nor own a PlayStation, but this is a huge W. Good job Helldivers.
In the holy words of prince Vegeta: "What a miscalculation on your part!"
This is my second post, just to talk about the cape!
It was designed by a player on Reddit, not by Arrowhead. The Devs saw it and thought it was a good idea.
And this game isn't PS players and PC players separately. We play together. Fight together. We are one group.
It is great they didn’t go thru with it. This is a beacon of hope. It’s been great fun. Thanks for sharing as always
When consumers work together, then things start changing!
Fun fact not mentioned im the video: some people called this review attack as "Orbital Dislike", apparently im reference to the "orbital strike" present in the game (i don't know, I don't play it).
sadly it wont prevent them from trying the same shit on other ps games already on steam or future releases... most likely we're screwed.
Trying to find out whats best for pc players is code for figuring out just how far we can bend you over before you stand up, great video and well done community we stopped them this time!
I want to add in i joined helldivers a little over a month after launch. I wasnt ever given a pop up about psn linking. So anyone that hadnt played at launch had even less of an idea
3:30 Yup, I remember having to use VPN to be able to sign up for a PS NOW 7-day trial in order to conquer GOW III in Chaos (Very Hard) mode. 🤷🏻♂🇲🇦
The Prodigal Son cape. Poetic lol
What about the fact that you still can't buy the game outside of a PSN zone? They backed off but Sony didn't back down yet. Or has that changed?
That’s steams doing
That's on Steam to reverse.
Thanks for the thanks, was annoying being viciously savaged by people for standing up to this. Barely affects me, but i read the initial update and immediately changed my review and uninstalled and requested a refund before I even saw my fellow divers up in arms. Thank you all for your support. I look forward to diving with you all.
We play together, or not at all.
Now they remember that.
Fantastic summary video.
Imagine being dumb enough to attempt to flip the script on a community that has been essentially trained on how to assemble in mass against a common enemy and thinking that will end well for you.
I think more people should recognize arrowheads wrongdoing. They wanted the psn requirement to help to ban people and submit support tickets. And it was the CEOS decision to disable the psn requirement until now. It was partially on them too.
Hey UE, hope you're well. I just heard some rumors that Helldiver 2's PSN account requirement has once again been implemented. So far Estonia Lithuania and Latvia have been affected. Not sure how high this issue would be on the list your coverage priority, but I'm hoping it's one that's worth checking out. Thanks.
I’ve seen plenty of takes on this shitshow, I clicked on yours because of your excellent perspective and delivery of subject matter. Keep it up!
Well, this surely didn't age well.
Petty sony.
If only we carried thar same energy to Ubisoft, EA, etc.
