Young kids, forgetting a cardinal rule of the military: beware the old man, in the profession where men die young. Maverick telling them 200 was a lot of push ups was not a complaint. It was a warning.

No, but they did make him obsolete. He more than likely flew missions in both Iraq wars and Afghanistan over the 30 some odd years he was in the service and despite his war record and all that, they still treat him like crap. They should be begging a pilot of his skill to teach at Top Gun full time, given how crap those graduates were compared to him but they basically want a reason to get rid of him.

@@Anarchist86ed well tbf, he has a huge track record of disorderly conduct, which on paper makes him seem like a bad leader (which kinda showed when he didn't keep his classroom in check when rooster lost his shit on hangman. Any other leader would've shut that shit down immediately before it got out of hand, but that would also not make for a fun film lol). Just because he's really really good doesn't mean it would be a guarantee that it would translate to being a good instructor, at least to his chain of command. Heck if it wasn't for Iceman he would've been kicked out a while ago, and he'd be lucky to not get a dishonorable discharge.
So all the animosity from Vice Admiral Simpson, as well as others, is extremely justified.

    • @Anarchist86ed
      @Anarchist86ed Рік тому +12

@@GrantedBunion True, but like I said... those pilots were nowhere near his skill. You'd think they'd be like "Listen, Mav, quit being a child and grow up. We need you to teach these kids everything you know. If you don't, forget about your pension and benefits because we've got enough insubordination on you to lock your ass up. Straighten up and fly right, or else." Instead they just kinda tell him he's what's wrong with how things should be done and he's gotta go. Meanwhile they've trained a bunch of pilots who couldn't even get a target lock on him. You'd figure they'd be a little more tolerant of his ways given how badly they're training their pilots.

But in the sequel you see Hangman how everybody else saw Maverick, a damn good pilot, but a bit of an arse who you couldn't really rely on because they were only interested in themselves how needs to learn a lesson about what it means to be a team.

I’m surprised that there are not more comments about Hangman literally being at a loss for words at 4:12… Flying side by side, Hangman is still giving Rooster heat. Rooster’s head is on a swivel the entire time the two of them are “chatting” because he knows Maverick is out there somewhere. When Maverick casually rolls up from underneath them, stating “been here the whole time” and “can you see me now” all Hangman can humbly say is “holy $hit”…. no cockiness from him this time… It’s like he’s finally realized he’s in the presence of a true master…

I think Hangman gets a lot of "hate" early in the movie for the wrong reasons. Yes, he's cocky, as most fighter pilots are. But he also does want the best out of people. He tells Rooster in this clip that he has the shot on Mav and to take it. He sucks up his pride before the mission to give encouraging words to Rooster. He is genuinely happy when the target is hit. He is the first to ask to go in to rescue the team.

Pilots are a different breed. I was in a NAS training squadron during Vietnam (wasn't easy being the only female in Avionics!) One thing I learned, whatever you tell the pilot they can't do, they will!
One was "Don't buzz the tower!"
Another was for the harrier pilots, "Don't take off with a vertical jet jump!"
    We loved it of course.
The best day I ever had was the day the Blue Angels were coming in for a weekend show.
My job that day was to work on an aircraft at the end of the line. The runway was on a peninsula so the view from the cockpit was beautiful.
Then I looked up and saw the Blue Angels were flying in! Not just flying in, doing all kinds of theatrics and it was like I was the only one in the world watching.
    that had a fantastic view!
Siting high in the cockpit watching this amazing show.
Then they landed right in front of me, incredible landing one after the other nose to tail and they even parked in unison. What a great memory.
Another thing watching this video I remembered the pilots' helmets.
They couldn't mess up their flying gear except the helmet and they had some crazy ones, funny ones. and some reallt artistic, wish someone had done a study on pilot helmet artwork!

One of the many reason why so many movies are so bad are those shaky camara moves and lense flares. I don't know exactly when it started but in the last few years it made many movies really really bad. Character running, shaky shaky. Character fighting shaky shaky. Character using a firearm shaky shaky. I sometime feel like a hung over sailor. It's awful. So I welcomed this fabulous camera work.
