  • In this video I am going to show you the easiest way to put modern road shifters on your old #mountainbike, that is, to turn it into a #gravel bike.

Hi! Thanks for making this video! Been converting my bike too. Do you happen to know if the Shiftmate or similar tools help to extend the reach of a FD? Do the pull ratio and the reach have a relation? Been trying to find answers but I haven’t found an answer 😅 thanks!

Nice video though indeed the shiftek is in my opinion too expensive for what it does. Instead I'd use campagnolo shifters that have the ratchet mechanism : the older ones do like 11 or 12 clicks while "newer" ones do 5-6 clicks so it's enough to be compatible with a wide (if not every) variety of front derailleurs. That's how I kept using a Shimano RSX front derailleur in one of my road bikes because I paired it with campag left shifter. Plus the campag shifters allow you to get a handlebar bag cause every cable run underneath the bar tape :) they are more user friendly to repair than shimano ones too
Right shifter is another story: 10 speed campagnolo shifter work with any road 11 speed shimano rear derailleur (and 10 speed Tiagra RD-4700 as it has the same pull ratio as 11 speed road ones) and any 10 speed shimano cassette. You also can use "new" (made after 2000) 9 speed campag shifter with the aforementioned rear derailleurs with a 9 speed shimano cassette.
There are also other mix and match configurations that exist: I used in one of my bikes an old 8 speed campagnolo right shifter, with a campagnolo rear derailleur (doesn't matter if it's old or modern) and a 7 speed shimano cassette. It indexes PERFECTLY because the cog space between each click is about the same between 8 speed campag and 7 speed shimano. I just get a "shadow" click in the end. It was quite a cheap alternative: I paid 25€ for the shifters and 15€ for the rear derailleur (as the front derailleur doesn't need to be replaced thanks to the ratchet left shifter I told you earlier) and no need for an expensive and/or rare campagnolo rear wheel :)
    I hope it'll help at least a bit ;)

You have no idea what are you are talking about. Front derailleurs on Shimano groups are fully interchengable. The issue is with rear derailleurs. Road brifters works with rear shimano from 7 to 9 speeds, older 10 speed Tiagra (4600) works too but modern Tiagra (4700) have different cable pull ratio.
