All good things to those who wait, I had completely forgot about this after looking back a few times for a higher res (and better sound) version. Chuffed to see a fellow Welshman tearing it up and one I'll be looking to see live next time their on home turf.
hello, Chris Buck has a really cool pedalboard that you can lift the pedal surface lid up to reveal more pedals underneath, can you tell me what pedalboard is that and where can I get one?
2 years later, and a year+ of following him, there is absolutely no reason why Chris Buck shouldn't be more famous. He is a player's player, undoubtedly, but his sound, style, and (maybe more importantly) choices in musicality are nothing less than crowd-pleasing genius. He hits every chord change and modulation perfectly. Nowhere in his original intros/outros are there points when a good listener can say, "There was a missed opportunity in that lick." He nails everything, much like a current monolith whose name rhymes with Fawn Sayer. His style is unique, his melodies and harmonies are effortlessly well-developed, and he has a grace with the instrument that is unparalleled.
I totally borrowed those e major licks he played at the start. He has some great go-to phrases for improvising. Before this guy, major scales didn’t really appeal to me (typical minor scale guy here) but after discovering this dude I sat down with my guitar and watched him for countless HOURS trying to decipher his playing, pausing, rewinding, hitting play again, repeat. Hours! Totally payed off - this guy has a lovely style. I still have his Friday Fretwork lessons sitting in my “watch later” list too. He’s just such a nice dude and it really comes across in his playing.
Chris Buck has the most amazing tone I've ever heard. I can only describe it as "perfect". I'm a Strat/Tele player myself and I have never heard any of my Fenders sound like that. I'm going to say that thing that many frustrated guitar players hate to hear (or read, in this case) but here it goes... that tone is in his hands. It's the only way.
As someone who lives in Hong Kong with no TV other than TPS, Andertons and Apple TV (!), this channel is a godsend. And having seen pretty much all TPS shows I keep coming back to this episode. It’s just...brilliant. What a wonderful guest - funny, hugely talented, self-deprecating. So British! And as always, Mick and Dan just masters of their craft. Beers all round!
My Fourth watchthrough and just watching Dan concentrating on watching Chris's right hand, leaning in close so as to not miss a thing. Remarkable. 59.30- a minute or so
At least my third watch through of this, and I honestly can’t remember a single episode where Dan is so quiet. I was extremely lucky to spend a little time with Chris after one of the gigs on the tour, talked a little gear and stuff, and my goodness what a super friendly guy. Of course gig wise, the band are on fire, and Chris AND Sally Anne (the Evans of Buck&Evans) lifted the roof off the place yet again. This with Chris, Matt Schofield, Josh Smith, Joey, Ariel, this is the best alternative tv channel EVER.
This was astonishingly good. An absolutely joy from start to finish. Three top blokes and three very, very talented people. I’m watching this again tomorrow. Then buying me some Chris Buck music.
He is so good in such a different way takes his time makes everything ring each note sounds just as good as the other he has some of the best touch ive hesrd and the way his brain processes licks is so unique I love his style very unique and very very technical but such good feel makes it look so relaxed zi always feel like players that dont look like there forcing or squeezing to hard are the best players because there comforatable on the neck and evrrything falls into place very smoothly
Holy shit! That was fabulous. Probably the best since Graham which was the best since Joey. The different od pedals set almost the same resonates with playing live venues in London and then at festivals: remarkable advice. It also filled a gap muchly left hollow where the cleanish sound could breathe. Chris' playing leaves me with a dichotomous feeling of inspiration and hopelessness that I will never be anywhere near his touch and technical skill. Much like watching the Woodstock Hendrix film where his fingers run like a fresh, clear spring water over the fretboard with nary a wasted note. He's also pointed me to try and make my Dyna Comp work for me - after years of failed experience! Great vid guys. I really liked the CE1 broken vid on TC. Paul
Hey Paul, Mick here. Just wanna say that I feel the same in terms of inspiration/ hopelessness. It happens every time and I’ve been doing this, sat with guys on this level, for 20 years. Michael Landau, Robben Ford, Matt Schofield, Philip Sayce, Peter Green, Bonamassa,, Paul Gilbert.Satch, Vai, Nuno... etc etc etc.... sorry for the name drops. If I can do that thing where I’m offering you advice but actually telling myself (in a terrible selfish manner)... just be yourself. Be inspired by these guys, but do what’s in your heart and ONLY that. And then it doesn’t matter; there is no comparison. You’re you, you’re unique and if you really mean it, people will care. A little bit heavy. But this shit is important. :0))
@@ThatPedalShow Cheers Mick. That is heartening advice from you. I have my moments of confidence - usually on stage. It's the downtimes that get to one. The only thing faster than the speed of light is the speed of self doubt. Anyway, keep up the good work. P.
at around 59 mins an 20 seconds, or whenever Chris turned on both the Phaser and the Echorec my life became complete…what a beautiful tone… I am sure you know by know but the R stands for Resonance...
I thought I was having a bad case of deja vu. I've seen all of this before. Then I realised that this is finally the HQ version ... thanks guys. Much better!
Lovely stuff gents. I’ve been a fan of Chris and his Friday Fretworks channel for a short while now and he possesses one of the sweetest vibratos in the biz. My fave part of the show however was at around 27 mins where Mick is borrowing Dan’s lead for a moment to play then without even glancing at Mick, Dan mutes his guitar channel and Mick waits for him to do it before they swap the lead back. That level of sympatico is a small thing but it’s a joy to watch.
The way they were looking at him in the beginning 😂that’s how you know you’re good. You can make two grown men just sit there looking at you and grinning
I remember the first time I watched a That Pedal Show video and I was so confused when they all of a sudden brought out a horn to honk in the middle of a conversation. 😂😂
I'd yet to run across Chris but what a class act. Very talented, but extremely humble and personable. I really enjoyed watching how much y'all were enjoying yourselves.
My favorite TPS yet. I discovered Chris when searching for a good Leslie pedal a few years back. Saw his video on the Mini Vent and have been a fan ever since. I love it when even after 25 years playing guitar, there are people who’s playing is magical and inspiring. Loved all the joking around on this one too!
Man that tone bender tone is probably one of the best gain sounds I think I’ve ever heard. Of course it is Buck playing it, so I can’t exactly make it sound like that, but man… I really need to pick one of those up
38:00 About the Highway one... From Fender support: "...These guitars are almost totally manufactured in Corona California. 5th time watching and still hanging on every word and every incredible note.. Dan at 21.48 just looking at Mick shaking his head ... 'Maan" says it all
That moment you realise someone else holds their pick like that when finger picking and you've been trying to learn it the other way as that is what seemed like the proper way to have more fingers. Good to know I'm not alone.
Recently got into Chris Buck, hat a player. Love the fact that there are still players coming through that have their own style. Weird to think he was a Slash devotee because I don't get this from his playing, he's something special
Wait a sec .. he can't be the biggest Slash fan in the world. Look at my name! lol. How have I not heard about this guy? I started playing because of Slash and GNR and I've recently discovered a real liking for Jimi. We have had an almost identical guitar/musical journey except he's really, really good. Seems like a lovely guy - even enjoying his breadth of vocabulary .. lol
Jarod James Nichols was the first guy that made me realize I need to use my fingers more. When I stumbled across Friday Fret Works I was blown away with what you can accomplish with the nuances Chris gets with fingers and pick that makes his playing so interesting. You guys pulled out of Chris the blessing of messing up his finger nail that gives him such a distinct voice on guitar. Great video. Not that simple of course but definitely a part of his sound.
For everyone who loves a marshall Bluesbreaker and doesn't wanna pay eBay/reverb prices, the Wilson Effects Black Tooth Gain is a Marshall BB with a Burr-Brown IC instead of the cheap original one. Sounds just like the MBB (because it is) but is even more open sounding due to the nicer components. $150 new, about $100 used on Reverb. If you love the MBB, you will wanna marry the WBTG.
Ha! That Strat after Les Paul story is spot on. I got a strat after a decade plus of only ever playing a Les Paul and, I swear, I thought it was f**king broken it sounded so bad! I genuinely was like, 'well, I'm gonna have to send this back'. But, I guess it just takes a bit of time for your ears to readjust, because I stuck with mine and I now adore the single coil sound.
Thank you for giving it another go - much apreciated! On the flip-side, I am once again reminded that I need a new pair of hands and MUCH better ideas...

Yes!!!! I am a Strat, Tele, and Les Paul player and there does seem to be a correlation there!!!! Les Pauls played through any blackface-fender have a dynamic response to die for. Teles hang right there with the Les Paul (in my experience) and only need maybe some delay or reverb to add some dimension. Strats seem to have the Most Dynamics, BUT, lack quite a bit in dimension. Hahaha!!! Sorry it took so bloomin long mate. :0)

There’s a cool video he does with JustinGuitar on his articulations if you’re still into learning something :)
The world stops still and silent, then holding its breath listens to every note he plays.
and they were all c natural
Probably the best guitarist of today : genuine, his own style, humble, create on the shoulders of others. Hats off.

This is literally an hour of Dan drifting off grinning, snapping back and drifting again. Chris Buck, total tone hero!
Keep coming back to this episode for a rewatch, great stuff guys, 😁👍
Don’t know where I was five years ago, but this was a great show
I’m with Dan here. Just watching Chris play leaves me gobsmacked. Cracking stuff.
What a delightful and entertaining human being.
I’ll say it again, what a great guy. Humble, humorous and an awesome player.
My Fourth watchthrough and just watching Dan concentrating on watching Chris's right hand, leaning in close so as to not miss a thing. Remarkable. 59.30- a minute or so
He’s such a likeable chap; it’s great when talented folk are down to Earth. Good banter lads. 🍻

Probably my favourite UA-cam video ever.
Every so often I watch this video, entirely for the fun factor of it, one of the most enjoyable vids I've watched on UA-cam.
Yes!!!!!
Thanks for not giving up, guys!
This was astonishingly good. An absolutely joy from start to finish. Three top blokes and three very, very talented people. I’m watching this again tomorrow. Then buying me some Chris Buck music.
A fender strat with super clean pickups and EV12LM speaker. Ain't nothing to hide behind there, and absolutely the core of his special tone.
Yay! Thanks guys for never giving up on this and reposting it at the quality it deserves
The thing that really hits me outside of the gorgeous playing is the humility of both guys.
This may be my most favoritist episode of TPS ever. Cheers you guys!

Chris is an amazing player.
In regards to the pickup comparisons, Mick’s blue strat sounded incredible.
Best Pedal show ep yet imo. Love Chris's playing.
Chris Buck commenting on nuances between pedals - "The punters can't tell. All the punters care about is whether I'm playing well". Wisdom!
...brilliant show....best guitar player...thanks ....

Watched it again...Great bloke and doesn't take it all too seriously. Well done guys for promoting British guitar talent.
CHRIS BUCK DUDE. Your playing is so great. I love your work.
Astonishing!
I only discovered Chris recently and was blown away immediately
Fabulous interview too!

I've met him after a gig; completely unassuming, friendly and funny. A lovely guy.
Great Show! Great Guest! I can totally relate to Dan's experiencing Chris like this!! 👀😍😁
What a nice, nice guy, and plays beautifully.
My god Chris sounds great. The tone is fantastic. Thank you for bringing him on.
Good laughs here, amazing playing, of course. Thanks y'all!
Finally! Thanks Dan, Mick, Chris and Simon!
Fabulous Show guys, great to se Chris On with you two, Best Guitarist About. And Welsh too👌🏽
I would never have guessed he was a huge slash fan. Kudos for developing your own style and tone
Oh man, now I have to watch this all over again? Okay, if I really have to...

24:12 i did the same thing with mine, nail is now super thin, even though i stopped using it that way
Yes!! Now he doesn’t look like Lara Croft circa ‘96! 🤘🏻😂
Not the worst character to look alike...
Hahaha! Just to clarify I was making a comparison to the pixel count not the “Tits and Pistols”
Although I think I’ve found a new band name. 😂
You totally have. Awesome
Got to be out there somewhere, maybe even a UA-cam channel on every Friday!

No idea how I missed this. Long time fan, and “borrower”, of “Young Buck”.

When he was a “Les Paul guy”, he needed a guitar and an amp. Now that he’s a “Strat guy”, he uses a wide range of pedals. Is there a correlation?
I always seem to go back to my Strat though. It seems that players who have grown up playing them always deal with the downside because the upside is SO GOOD!!!! Another thing, Strats (being so low in output) seem to really play well with all types of pedals and I think that this may be the best explanation.
Well... in all honesty, there ARE a lot of pedals that sound glorious with a Strat that get too woolly and thick with a LP.
AND...even more brillianter second time around!! OH YEAH!!!
Yay! thanks for the re-upload :D
Just fab.
