I would absolutely love a video about why Oshi No Ko is so popular. Ai feels like she's taken over the world just about as much as Bocchi did.
Sooo like every other anime that's "taken over the world"?
It's pretty obvious why it's popular: Idol + murder mystery
Good writing, interesting characters that have depth, and excellent art and visuals?
@@calar8 it's average
@@TheGamer-sb3ry you need to get your eyes checked
Fitting this dropped on the day where there is no Oshi no Ko episode because it got delayed
3:10 Supernatural happenings
5:38 Doctor's M U R D E R mystery
8:07 Becoming an Idol
10:39 D Y I N G for love
12:56 Dark side of Japanese Entertainment Industry

Another good recommendation would be Odd Taxi. Idols, mystery, spoilers. Go check one out too.
"...nor do gods routinely come down and mess with things"
Well, about that...
I think one aspect of Oshi No KO you haven't mentioned is the show's heavy focus on character analysis of a larger-than-life figure and the lies she makes. Ai is the poster girl of Oshi No Ko, and all of her mental hangups, and the show's central themes as a whole, have to do with the nature of lies and love. "This lie is love. And this lie is a gift to the world." I think it would be nice to include some recommendations that also focus on character analysis of a larger-than-life figure.
Honestly I would love to see any other animes that try to tackle this particular topic
the larger than life characters are meh imo. it feels like self insert.
If you ever want a show that focuses heavy on character analysis and self introspection, Re:Zero is a must watch. Not only do you get to dive into the main characters psyche, you also get to learn many values throughout the main characters POV.
A great example would be the discussion of self love. People who have depression or a negative view of themselves (you can even say this about Arima Kana) tends to downplay themselves and thinks that it's not worth it to share their problems with other people. We can draw the similarities between Re:Zero and Oshi no Ko here where in ep 11 we see Arima Kana carrying the burden of the whole idol group on her shoulders and not sharing it with her groupmates. Kana thinks that she's experienced this a thousand times alrealdy and she has this lens of herself where she thinks that she is a washed up actress who now barely has any value to her name and would be fine on being the one who suffers rather than others. Same can be said for Re:Zero, where the main character, Subaru, no longer sees the value in himself since he isn't strong, he isn't smart, he has all these issues that he has to tackle and the only thing he has to his name is the he can return by death. He doesn't want other people to suffer so he keeps them in the dark and even when he tried to rely on those people, it always ends up in a horrible and gruelsome situation. Only thing Subaru can do is to keep on sacrificing himself and he thinks that his sacrifices are the only reason why he's even worthy enough to stand side by side alongside his peers.
What both Subaru and Kana looked past is the fact that the people around you don't just love you because you're strong, not just because you're this genius child actress, not just because you're someone who'd be willing to suffer for others, the people around you love you because you are you. When you view yourself in a negative light, how could you even possibly understand why other people would love you. How could you understand why people are willing to sacrifice their time and energy just for you. When you can only see yourself as this loser who deserves all the bad things in the world, how could you possibly comprehend that other people are also willing to share the same burdens and together go through the trials and tribulations that you're facing. If you can't love yourself, then you naturally think only you yourself have to suffer and other people to not be part of it but what you don't realize is you're also distancing and isolating not only yourself but also the people around you. When you keep everything to yourself, the people around you can't understand you. Even worse, did those people around you ever even asked for you to go through all this trouble just for them? Now the people around you would start to feel guilty since they made you act that way and heck, there are people who'd even be mad for what you're doing. Are you truly helping others by being the only one who needs to face these problems or are you just being selfish thinking that you're doing this for others when in reality you're just hurting everyone more.
"If you have the time to overcomplicate everything in your head, then you have the time to spill it all out! Spit out all of those knots and when you're done just tell me to believe you!" -Otto Suwen, Re:Zero
We can clearly see that Kana feels better after sharing her thoughts and worries with Ruby. Where Re:Zero takes another step further though is how they show that when you love yourself and you think that you have self worth, you'll start to see the situation in the show improve. When both Kana and Subaru talks and communicates their emotions and issues, the people around you can finally understand you and are able to help. Be it like Ruby where she tells Kana that it's okay to fail or be it like Otto where he tells Subaru that it's okay to rely on others, both of these examples shows clear character introspection and analysis.
There are many other aspects that Re:Zero dives into and all of the things that I said just now are just a fraction of what makes Re:Zero a masterpiece. There's another similarity between the two shows being that "Who is Natsuki Subaru?" and "Who is Aquamarine Hoshino?". Just truly, who are you? I don't really want to type it out here but hopefully this will convince you enough to give Re:Zero a shot.
As for other shows you could consider, you can try Mushoku Tensei.
If you truly love Oshi no Ko. Then I highly recommend you watching AutoSave's reaction to this show. The things that I talked about are topics that are commonly discussed during the discussion of AutoSave's reactions. They are very intuitive and are always trying to see the meanings behind things in a show and you could really view this show from a different light once you listen to their discussions.
That's all from me. ;)
Another show about a deceased idol with supernatural elements (other than _Zombieland Saga_ 😉) and examining what it means and takes to be an idol is last year’s largely overlooked _Kami Kuzu☆Idol_ (aka _Phantom of the Idol_ ) I won’t spoil anything here, but lots of similar themes to Oshi No Ko with an overall slightly lighter tone 😊
Monster and Perfect Blua amazing masterpieces
I'm surprised Skip Beat is not on this list, for the acting and showbizz part of the anime. It's old but it's still very good and I whole heartedly recommend it
I expected you to recommend Erased for the supernatural aspect, because that also has a adult living in a child’s body during modern times and is a murder mystery.
Except I really dislike the ending to Erased, which has stopped me from recommending it to anyone ever.
Sure, there are parts to it that are amazing, and many OTHER people will justifiably recommend it. But will "I" recommend it? Not unless I was happy with it. Which I wasn't.
@@GlassReflection Yeah it's sad that the anime's final episode came out very shortly before the manga ending. If they'd waited, the ending would've been a lot better.
@@LordVader1094 What's even more upsetting is that the _actual_ ending to the series *IS* a lot better.
I'm still mad.
10:40 I'd probably say another good recommendation for "dying for love" that would be going out of the norm of possible choices, I would think Summertime Render would fit the bill nicely.
It's just a shame they're not many people have heard about it or watched it because of streaming issues.
What do you rate it outta 10? 🤔
Been watching this on netflix and enjoying the heck outta this. And yes, Netflix is simulcasting Oshi No Ko in Asia with English subtitles.
I guess if you live in Japan most anime are on Netflix
@@amara560 VPN over to Hong Kong or Singapore. Netflix Japan usually won't cater to English speaking viewers. Most of the anime don't have English subs
i would say to watch Idolish7 for both the idol aspect + the dark side of the entertainment industry. sure the cast isnt small, but almost everyone is well developed with clear motivations and struggles that end up colliding with the idol careers of the 3 main boy groups + a duo ( across the three current seasons ). almost everything from family drama to idol culture, to companies bending to the wills of higher ups just so they dont suffer the consequences. but my biggest recommendation is to watch it for yourself.
I'm so glad someone mentioned i7, thank you! It's definitely worth watching.
I was actually intending on reading the Oshi no Ko manga at some point, so I was excited that it was actually getting an anime adaptation. Being caught up to the anime, Perfect Blue is, well, a "perfect" recommendation. I had a feeling it was showing up somewhere before you even mentioned it.
Really like this type of video. I don't always get to keep up with every season, nice to see recommendations based on something I'm watching now.
Thank you Arkada! I have had Perfect blue on my plan to watch forever and this is a perfect reminder of why I need to check it out ASAP
Bro I remember watching your videos with religious zeal back in 2014, I was so into anime and manga back then, but life happened and I had to pause all my hobbies. After a nearly a decade of hardwork and success I'm free to enjoy my old hobbies again.
It's really nice to see one of my favorite UA-camrs are still around. 😊
Yo I LOVE this video format. I find recommendations based off individual aspects like this very interesting.
Also, I love that I said "Perfect Blue" in perfect timing with you revealing it.
First things first, I commend the effort in the video to come up with Linus-worthy segues into other anime, I'm just having fun.
Damn, that Monster recompendation is such a stretch that that segment became purely amusing to watch. Like, there's an OVA Chika fried rice energy there!
Mentioning the idol aspects of Oshi no Ko and recommending Sore ga Seiyuu, feels like "Hey, you liked the Chalk World cartoon, right? Shirobako would be right up your alley."
The first four recommendations just feels like an excuse to mention Perfect Blue, honestly XD
While I've not watched it and will most likely never watch it, through cultural osmosis, I'm absolutely sure Perfect Blue amazing and perfectly fits as a recommendation.
Guess it had just been too many years since GR last recc'd Monster xD both are good, for sure, but it does feel like a stretch
Yay! You finally reacted to Oshi No Ko! ❤
also I've heard people compare Aqua to Lelouch of the Code Geass fame with both of them trying to get revenge on their respective fathers.
Shit how did I not see the similarities before
Good comparison, but Aqua couldn't pull off my name.
0:52 I did cry, so many subscriptions just to watch my anime without sailing the high seas
Was hoping for a full breakdown 😢😢
Had a blast!! hope you did too! Just noticed your plushy of you behind you on the shelf, are you hoping to try again to have a small production run of them? We did place an order when you first introduced it but I'm guessing the minimum number was not met. Cheers!
Nice video GR
Great video and recommendations, having watched and read all the anime and manga you recommended here I can´t think of better examples.
"Nor do gods routinely come down and mess with things"
*glances nervously at The Crow Girl*
It's almost like I said that there would be no spoilers in the video. Anything that COULD be a spoiler would be missing important context :D
If you like CONCEPT of Oshi no Ko but hate BG monologs with static shots that last like half an episode, watch Perfect Blue. It's never meant to be a movie about what's going on behind the curtains but it shows that pretty well for me.
pretty good suggestions actually
You nailed it with Perfect Blue. Its the exact story I thought of when I found Oshinoko. Solid recommendations, all of them, really.
Love a good recommendation video
Be warned, Monster is the slowest of fucking slow burns that I’ve ever watched
Ill be back to this video when I eventually watch it, just a future self reminder
THE VEST IS BACK! All is well in the internet!
I can't believe you made a link between ushi no ko with monster 😮
The Oshi no ko manga is a insane sets of twists and turns into the abyss that is the Entertainment industry trust me.
Loved this! Soooo that girl in Seiyu is not Yuki from Haruhi Suzumiya?
You had me at Rascal Doesn't Dream...
Just visited Japan, this show/manga is absolutely EVERYWHERE.
I need to find the anime title for that guy who gets into show business and travels through time from some historical japan time with the weird hats and robes
I’ve been watching Idolm@ster Cinderella Gurls U149 after each episode of Oshi No Ko since they come out on the same day and it really helps lift your spirits. So far the show is also being handled very tastefully, and the animation is top tier.
Also, I enjoyed debating Steins;Gate as an isekai with you at Anime North! I was definitely not as prepared for it as I thought when I picked the fight, but I’m glad I was eventually able to make a somewhat decent argument
Skip Beat! is a better recommendation for a behind the scenes look at a girl becoming an actress idol.
For the mystery part i see it similar to Erased, stein gate, kokoro connect, monster. Maybe farfetch is nagi no asukara for the supernatural aspect but it has a bit of time travel so thats why i include.
That OST in the beginning of the video sounds a lot like Buddy Daddies OP. Great recommendations all around.
Yo... Make more of this!
I haven’t watched Bunny Girl Senpai, but that plot premise sounds quite a bit like the Monogatari series, which I was obsessed with in high school
And there I was thinking it's a misspelling of Hoshi no Koe.
Not sure if it fits in any of the categories, but White Album 1 may be recommended as it is about the industry, a love story with a sad end and an idol's story.
I approve your stretch one. It's fantastic. ReZero
Please make full review on Oshi no ko
For the "idol" aspect, Skip Beat & Ya Boy Kongming are good alternatives.
Good video
Nice, I was getting worried that Perfect Blue was not going to be mentioned
well to be frank, A Doctor can be a competent detective indeed, especially when human life is at the core of the problem, Medical Diagnosis is all about ruling out the posibilities based on availlable symptoms, signs or proofs, and how to fix the issue efficiently, we think much like a detective when a patient complains about illness
idk why There aren't more and nmore series about "Detective-Doctor" Dynamic, it'll be the next big sub-genre which has potential to blow up.
soon I'll be able to recite the patreons myself
I found OshiNoKo manga when I searched something similar to ActAge.
Although ActAge manga was never finished, you could still give it a try. Read all but the last (unfinished) arc and you won't regret it.
I have already covered just about every old anime I might want to watch, My Anime List is infinite, I only gain new stuff at new seasons
But you make good videos, so here's my watchtime!
I love Oshi No Ko.
i knew every single recommendation coming except the idol one!
When you brought up becoming an idol I thought it was going to be Zombieland Saga.
1.Rascal doesn't dream of bunny girl senpai is very nice, it's good plot is nice and emotions are genuine.
2 , monster, actually i haven't watched monster but i have good things about it.
3. Seiyu's life Never heard.
4. Re zero, amazing it's one of my best anime every. Scary, cute, funny, and mind blowing depressions, etc . In other words it's amazing ❤️.
I fucking knew you were gonna say perfect blue at the end LOL
If he didn't, it wouldn't make any sense.
Neat.
I’d also recommend Mushoku Tensei. If you like the premise of an adult in a child’s body and pervy humour, it’s probably for you.
Seiyu's life I haven't seen yet... kinda surprised I've seen all the others already 😅
I'm surprised "Erased" wasn't mentioned.
PERFECT BLUE! Great recommendation.
How about some recommendations for anime that cover 2 or more of the 5 factors you list? Let me start the ball rolling:
Supernatural + Becoming an idol: ZOMBIELAND SAGA; YA BOY KONGMING
Murder mystery + becoming an idol + dark side of entertainment: ODDTAXI
Anyone else got some?
HUGE leap from Oshi no Ko to Monster.
oshi no ko is dramatic.
monster is sad.
pick your poison.
I didn't but based on what I've watched these recommendations seem solid
I was so sure you'd recommend Zombieland Saga here somewhere but alas~
Very new!
I feel like you could also recommend kaguya sama love is war since the manga has the same writer even though it doesn't really fit any of these categorys, they do technically take place in the same universe, but most people have also seen it probably
the problem is finding one with all those as well placed as in oshi no ko
Sooo, what about if I didn't like Oshi no Ko? What anime would you recommend? Something that delivers on the promises of the first episode?
There is another, more recent series I would recommend if one is interested in a murder mystery in the idol industry, though a) the main character isn't the idol, but a taxi driver caught up in her death and b) well... they're animals.
My personal fave of 2021 and on my short list of Best of the Decade: ODD TAXI.
ua-cam.com/video/zI_cLtW3PnA/v-deo.html
Kageki shoujo is a very good show which covers very similar problems. It has great characters and portrais emotions and trauma probably even better then oshi no ko
Also recommend Revue Starlight and Zombieland Saga
I see love for Monster, I give a like. QED.
Erased or Boku Dake ga Inai Machi is great to watch or read if you liked oshi no ko
Only the first 2 aspects intrigue me
Other than the seiyuu one... I've seen pretty much all of them. 😊
The title feels a little misleading. I thought the recommendations would consist of shows which show the dark nature of the entertainment industry. Something like Kageki Shoujo. Besides Perfect Blue I guess.
But the show is not just dark nature, its a bunch of components…
그 사악한 괴물...
아쿠아와 루비가 너무 그리워...
Read it
⚡👍👍👍⚡
I've only watched the 1st two episodes of Oshi no Ko, and frankly, I have no interest in it (even though I like 4 of the 5 recommendations). The main reason is that I can't stand Aqua...
Personally, I find myself not drawn to stories with certain aspects, be it isekai, romance, idols, SF, mecha, or whatever. Nor is it well constructed plots (though that helps). It's whether I enjoy watching the main characters. Give me enjoyable characters with a lackluster plot, and I'll still be happy. But give me even an excellent story with characters I don't care about, and I'll likely drop it.
Who is ahegao comics?
You've probably seen this video
So I have some questions for you
Oshi nou koww
Great 👍🏻 video nice 👍🏻 hype!!!!!!!!!!!
I reckon 90% of people watched Oshi no Ko because 'AKASAKA'
And he DESERVES that reputation.
you don't miss any opportunity to recommend "Monster", still there is no chance that I will.
After I watched the 1st episode of "Oshi no Ko", I was thinking, how came I already new of the toxicity of the I.doll industry? the answer was "Bunny girl senpai", it informed me of the toxicity of that industry and the unwritten rules that only serve to encourage that toxicity.
Monster is fantastic.
Oshi No Ko is very up to date in the manga about current technology and trends and social media compared to Perfect Blue
What if I don't?
I am here only to say sorry. Since I watch over 20 animes per season and work 9 hours a day I cannot watch more anime. But I will add them to the plan to watch section in my animelist in case I find a girlfriend to watch anime with xD
Still waiting for more Rezero.
only one doctor is detective??? HOW ABOUT BLACK JACK?
I only watched so far as to the point where the two babies decided to blackmail their nanny pretending to be gods. That was one thing too many to derail the concept for me |D
As she was going to probably blackmail the company's president aka her husband for no real reason? Yeah, I think the babies have the moral highground here.
Also, also... Try to finish that first episode. If you say it's not for you after you've seen the ending and its after credits, fair game. No one loves everything. But, let me mention that the hype this anime generated was more than justified.
@@marinellovragovic1207 It's not a criticism on the baby's morals. It's just the concept as a whole that's like... not from this galaxy.
@@DAS_k1ishEeyeah, i was expecting something different, not something so silly like that, so in that sense it really was a deception. But I was able to put those expectations aside and I really is a good anime.
@@marinellovragovic1207 Having finished the first episode, it's not really worth it honestly, I could tell it wasn't for me from the first five minutes and the rest of the episode was borderline unwatchable. The clearly telegraphed and poorly executed plot twist at the end of the episode doesn't salvage it. The manager jumping to blackmail for no real reason just to provide the MCs an opportunity to immediately solve a pointless and largely irrelevant issue in the dumbest way possible is kind of a part of the problem, at least for me anyway.
Yeah I got through the first episode and it was too much. Not for me I'm afraid
It's not dark tone all the time. Later episodes are even more centrally comedy based, but obviously tone could quickly shift to being darker.
Hm, I'm not a big fan of these recommendations. Other than Perfect Blue, it feels like these recommendations aren't really based on what makes Oshi No Ko interesting. To me, that's the revenge plot, the reincarnation aspect, the mystery, the feels, and the focus on exploitation. As such, I think better recommendations would include Death Note, To Your Eternity, Saga of Tanya the Evil, The Promised Neverland (Season 1), and Erased. I guess there is something to be said about recommending things people might not have already watched though.
