14:56 Commenting on this video a year later to point out something I just noticed: The Cyrillic (the alphabet used by Russian and many other Slavic languages) letters on the side of this machine spell out "Danger High Voltage." That is, they *literally* spell out the *English words* using the Cyrillic alphabet. It's not translated into Russian (or Belorussian or Bulgarian or any language that uses Cyrillic), nor is it transcribed in such a way wherein reading the letters as they are pronounced will result in an approximation of the English pronunciation (something like "deyn-jeyr hie voal-tawj"). It's literally just the English words written using a 1:1 swap of Cyrillic letters for the Latin ones, resulting in utter gibberish. Most galling is that the letter used to substitute the Hs in 'high' *is the wrong one.* They used "Ч" which makes a "ch" sound, like in 'Church.' Honestly I think this was probably some amateur project made by one dude that somehow got published.
When I first saw the Cyrillic characters, I started thinking this was just a poorly translated Russian game, but then I saw the English text later in the game, which just added to the other nonsense in this game. *WOW.*
The 90s was a wild time to be alive, once we got holographic Doritos cards in our bags of Doritos, and there were even advertisements on the television about the holographic Doritos cards in specially marked bags of Doritos... And we loved it, too. Later we did the same thing, us 90s creatures, we made holographic Phantom menace cards in boxes of Pepsi products. Collectively, we all loved holographic things tucked into our food containers.

A good deal of those old CD-ROM games could only play one sound source at a time, so devs back then had to decide if they wanted to put speech over music, and make each cut-scene its own audio track, or just subtitle the speech. Many opted for the latter as something as simple as Redbook audio quality was still extremely novel.

Oi, this era of PC games... It's a treasure trove for a series like this.
All those "rich media" trendy stuff didn't go past s fad.
With exceptions such as Myst, the whole FMV thing ended up relegated to a gimmick, for examples.

14:56 Commenting on this video a year later to point out something I just noticed:
The Cyrillic (the alphabet used by Russian and many other Slavic languages) letters on the side of this machine spell out "Danger High Voltage." That is, they *literally* spell out the *English words* using the Cyrillic alphabet. Most galling is that the letter used to substitute the Hs in 'high' *is the wrong one.* They used "Ч" which makes a "ch" sound, like in 'Church.'
Honestly I think this was probably some amateur project made by one dude that somehow got published.
How did they even do that!?
When I first saw the Cyrillic characters, I started thinking this was just a poorly translated Russian game, but then I saw the English text later in the game, which just added to the other nonsense in this game. *WOW.*
Consider that with CD drives at the time, the loading times would probably make the button prompts much more forgiving.
"... Oh, great... He's still alive..."
Comedy gold.
Collectively, we all loved holographic things tucked into our food containers.
wah
I remember those cards

I feel like the idea behind this game, of using a molecular analyzer to morph yourself into different animals in order to infiltrate a secure location, has a lot of potential as an FPS.
Messiah? Dishonored?
@@MildMisanthropeMaybeMassive Never played either one.
It is a good idea, just poorly executed.
@@millenniumf1138 Both of those games allow you to possess the bodies of NPCs including animals. (In fact with Messiah, it's the central mechanic/gimmick.)
Messiah was a flawed forgotten game that was really hyped up in the 90's.
Dishonored is one of those essential games every gamer needs to play. It's one of the best immersive sims next to Deus Ex, Thief, and System Shock and shares some of it's developers.
@@MildMisanthropeMaybeMassive Huh! Okay, then I'll have to try them out and see how I like them. Thanks!
Around the same time this came out, I made a, "game," using Hypercard. We could go to my high school's computer lab if we had a study hall period, and I always did that instead. It was basically a choose your own adventure story with some sounds, and simple animations. I am pretty sure it was a better game than this. I will admit, even at the time, I realized it was just me messing around with computers to kill boredom, and not an attempt to make game anyone would actually want to play, let alone pay money to play!
There's another gsme that was made with Hypercard... mentioned in this video...
Hey, Hypercard was a decent technology. Cyan used it for the original release of The Manhole and I think the Mac version of Myst.
@@NaviciaAbbot I believe you are right about Myst. The game Bomber for Mac was also created with Hypercard. It was a WWII B17 bomber simulation. Obviously not a flight simulator, but more strategy, and crew resource management simulation. I played it for MANY hours.

NOO!
Wow, this one really takes me back.
No, I never heard of it before seeing this video, but this was the kind of weird crap you'd often get when developers got way too ambitious with the new CD-ROM technology back in the Windows 3.1 days of computing. Just before the internet started picking up steam and becoming publicly widespread. Stuff like "Town with No Name" and that terrible Gundam game you reviewed a while back.
If this is them being ambitious, I'm scared to see what they do when they're not.
It's like someone tried to make Animorphs based on a rough description that had been through 14 rounds of Chinese Whispers
I can't help but kinda love the dedication that's evident in this game. So what if it's bad? They went all in anyway, and I can't help but respect that!

Oh god, I'm so sorry.

This channel went from 'meh' to 'ok' to one of the best and leading gaming channels on UA-cam, it's been amazing to see it's progression first hand.
I'm glad it moved past the angry, sweary atmosphere from long ago to this. It's not like I'm against profanities when it's used for appropriate moments but I find it incredibly immature and off-putting when it's used all the time for mundane things, you know?
