This Popeye game calls Popeye's nemesis 'Brutus'. He's also called 'Bluto'. They're the same character but due to legal issues (that ended up being a mistake) early on in the cartoons they rotated the names back and forth multiple times.
I've always known him as Bluto, myself, no one really refers to him as Brutus these days.

Popeye is perfect for a beat em up style game ala The Simpsons Arcade game. Playable characters being Popeye, Olive, Brutus and the Hamburger guy fighting their way through scenarios based upon the classic cartoons. That's ALL it needed to be.
I myself commented about a side-scrolling Cuphead-style platformer with a beat-em-'up elements that I imagined. Not sure about Olive or Wimpy, but I could definitely see a set of circumstances arise that forces Popeye and Bluto to join forces.
That would've been awesome if Konami or Capcom done that back in 90s either in the style of Street Fighter 2 or TMNT.

It really is a shame that this is the most recent representation Popeye has in video games. Like, imagine a Popeye game made by the same team behind Cuphead; it'd be amazing. Instead, we've got... this.
Man that would be so awesome if the Cuphead devs had the rights to make a Popeye game. They pay a lot of tribute to Max Fleischer and other animator studios of old.. they deserve to get that opportunity.
A shame? Nobody cares about Popeye since at least the nineties.

@@ccricers Maybe have the 5 levels from both the Popeye Arcade game and the Java Port, while creating sidescrolling levels and boss fights based on various shorts and comics. Have the story be about Popeye becoming the new town hero of Sweethaven, dealing away with ruffians (like Bluto and the SeaHag) who want to have their way, and Popeye would earn the affection of Olive Oyl along the way. That would get people interested in Popeye.
I find it insane that Popeye not only is well known enough in Japan that Shigeru wanted to make a game about him, but the fact that there are MULTIPLE Popeye video games in Japan over there is much more shocking to me.
Interest in other cultures is not really out of the ordinary. I mean look at all the people outside of Japan who are obsessed with Anime, yet a lot of the shows are probably just mediocre over in Japan. At least Popeye was hugely popular for a few decades.
Osamu Tezuka, often called "the Father of Manga," was a huge fan of Carl Barks and his Donald Duck comics. He even gave the latter a birthday card with a drawing of Astro Boy hugging Donald. Media appreciation between Japan and the West has never been a one-way street. A lot of classic French comics are popular in Japan as well, as is classic manga in France, and there've been many Franco-Japanese collaborations in the last several decades.
@@amp6259 It feels to me that while Classic anime is getting popular in America for paying homage to western animation, Japan is favoring classic western animation for humanization of cartoon characters.
Actually, Popeye is the most iconic cartoon in Asia. Personally I think it’s familiar because the boomer Asians saw navy men all the time. I mean, Douglas MacArthur referred to my families’ home country as the worlds largest aircraft carrier.
It's not that farfetched when you think about it. For example, the reason why Colonel Sanders and KFC is referenced in various anime and manga because it's loved greatly in Japan. Citizens get buckets reserved in advance for MONTHS before holidays.
Popeye is one of those things that should make a perfect video game, he's always fighting, has recognizable villains and a built in power up system but it just isn't going to be done right.

There are many games that are basically rushed like Popeye 2021.
I noticed that, aside from the home screen trick, every time Popeye randomly dies, you can always see the Vulture in the sky, so it might be that the vultures collisions are jank.
Enemies in Popeye 2021 Switch and PS4 can teleports like Wizard at Wor 1980.😅
Ya that's my thoughts as well. I know nothing about game design, but judging by the footage, I'm gonna guess that the vulture's hitbox is just the entire column of vertical space the model occupies (or at least a large chunk of it), so the game might register the hit if Popeye is above or below it too, despite the models not actually being in contact. Idk I've never played the game and I don't know how game design code works, that's just my hypothesis ^_^

If I recall correctly, when Riggs reviewed this game and rated it poorly, the publisher threatened him with legal action. They would rather spend money on frivolous lawsuits instead of proper game development.

There's another western Popeye game which is kinda obscure. It's called Popeye: The Quest For The Woolly Mammoth, and it's pretty much a Telltale interactive movie way before Telltale ever existed. Check it out, it's very weird

@@Nov-5062 Actually, the Popeye thing you’re talking about is called a Multi-Path movie. Think of it as a “Choose Your Own Adventure” Story. In fact, there are bad endings to “Popeye and the Sunken Treasure”, which I’m guessing is the sequel you’re talking about.
This game exists because the popeye character and his earliest comic strips are in public domain in several countries. Anyone can technically make an official popeye game as long as the plot is somewhat original and is developed in Europe.

The only weird copyright is the whole Bluto/Brutus thing. I always knew him as Bluto all my life until the Internet told me otherwise the recent years.
Is it not an official licensed product? It's referred to as official in its store listing, credits King Features Syndicate as the copyright holder, and is sold under a name protected by an active trademark. The game it's based on is also copyrighted.
Popeye is still copyrighted in America, though. I don't think they'd be able to sell the game here without permission from the copyright holders.

If I recall correctly, Popeye is officially public domain now. If someone wanted to make a Popeye video game now, they wouldn't have to pay to use the I.P.
But if you live in the US, you will have to wait till January 1, 2025 in order to make a Popeye video game without paying to use the I.P

My favorite fact about Popeye is that he was only supposed to be a one off character in a short story arc for Wimpy and Sweetpea before they were renamed they were the main part of the strip (along with olive oil who was wimpys wife all with different names) Popeye did so well people wanted more of him so it all got changed about

This game honestly looks like something that would be featured on Vinesauce Android Trash. It gives off that vibe strongly, especially with the stolen 3D world and Popeye model assets along with ONE song playing in the entire game.
Instead of the game having ads being played on the screen every 2 minutes, it actually got on 8th generation consoles put at a price for 13 dollars.
I mean, not having ads shoved in your face is a DEFINITE plus...

I noticed every time you died randomly, the vulture was way up in the sky. So apparently the vulture's attack box stretched vertically infinitely. Even with it miles up in the air, you still trigger its attack to KO you.

Popeye is gonna go public domain in 2 years times, so King Features is desperately trying to cash on their intellectual property while they still have it. Genndy Tartakovsky (Dexter's Lab, Samurai Jack, Hotel Transylvania) was suppose direct an animated movie and even had a well-received test footage with Tom Kenny voicing a slightly-younger looking Popeye but it was cancelled in favour of The Emoji Movie.

When I heard "popeye game in 2021", I was expecting maybe a cuphead-style, 1930's influenced kinda platformer, action-type game. They majorly dropped the ball and missed an opportunity with with this.

The random dying occured under the vulture. It was registering the hit in the area below it as if the vulture was right there in front of Popeye.
I was about to mention the same thing.
i would assume they noticed, but it doesnt helps much since the vulture is flying so high you only see it upon death, which by then its too late
The game probably calculates proximity in 2D, which means the vulture's altitude doesn't matter.
I could probably code up something like this in a couple of weeks, but I wouldn't, because I have too much pride in my work.

Yeah I was about to say. Every single one of those insta-deaths you could see the vulture plop down from the sky.
So I'm guessing either the vulture's hitbox is just a cylinder reaching from the sky to the floor, or the hitbox appears the moment the vulture spawns, and you don't actually see the model because it needs to animate moving down from top of the map to the ground.
Or like someone mentioned, they got lazy and just went [ if (Popeye.xz == Vulture.xz) Popeye.Yeet(); ] to check for collision, so the moment the vulture is anywhere near you regardless of how high up either of the models are, you always end up dying.

Those early popeye cartoons from the 30s to maybe the 50s are absolutely hilarious. If you've never watched them, check them out. Then around the 60s-80s they were not good. I saw that Popeye movie in the theater as a kid and loved it. I've watched it as an adult and...still loved it.

17:50 Those aren't random, the vulture is in all of those clips. The game's collision detection is treating it likes it's 2D, so everything's bounding-box extends the entire vertical height, like in Doom. Correction, Doom is actually only partly 2D (they call it 2.5D, though that's more the Build games, so maybe 2.25D? 🤷) because while the aiming is 2D, you can actually jump over gaps. They really did do the absolute minimum work to convert this 2D game to 3D. 🤦
That doesn’t make sense, because the Vulture’s Hitbox in the Arcade game isn’t as shoddy as this. I don’t see the vulture in the shot at 18:25.

I don't think so that's not how that would work if the Ai was 2D he would have to be at least on the same level but I think whatever is happening is the witches weapons I think instead of removing the witch they put the witch in the floor if you look most deaths are falling on in walking up hills and you can easily fall into the hills so I think when you are walking on a hill you go in the hill and hit the witches stuff because this is not there suff it's from the Unity store

I didn't expect Popeye to have a videogame, let alone a game for the Switch, instead of some obscure Playstation game from 1996.
Popeye has a bunch of video games
For better or worse, the switch has a lot of games based on old IP's. My favorite example being "Slaps and Beans", an arcade beat-em-up based on the old Bud Spencer & Terrance Hill movies. And it's surprisingly good! And the more I think about it, the more that kind of hilarious slapstick beat-em-up would have been perfect for Popeye as well.
Ummm....this is a remake of the arcade game from 1981.

For certain situations, I don’t think Popeye is dying randomly.
I think the game is treating the vulture spawning in as either a massive hitbox or a diving animation that didn’t load. So the vulture being just above you gets registered as a hit.
I also thought the game possobly confused a heart as an enemy, as Popeye got BTFO'd right next to one.

I have literally never heard Bluto referred to as Brutus until today. Turns out that it was something that lasted from 1957-1978 when King Features thought that Paramount owned the Bluto name. Turned out King owned it the whole time. Ocean Comics made a joke in 1988 that Bluto and Brutus were brothers.
I'm pretty sure they're using Brutus in this game because that's the name that was used in the Nintendo arcade game. The Nintendo game was based on the cartoons where he was named Brutus, which is the same reason Popeye is wearing a white sailor suit in the game.
@@KasumiKenshirou I’m also pretty sure the Ocean Comics are not canon to the Thimble Theatre Lore. For all I care, Bluto’s full name might as well be “Brutus J. Bluto”, and he’s referred to as Bluto to some of his Friends and enemies like Whimpy, Popeye and Olive, while called Brutus by people like Castor, Sweepea and the Sea Hag.

At 17:52, 18:04 and 18:35 *the vulture* was _directly above_ your position when you died (you can see it when Popeye launches). Looks to me like the vulture's model spawned way higher in the air than it was supposed to for some reason, but the hitbox was still at ground-level where it was supposed to be.

@@robbiewalker2831 Considering enemies fail to pause at other moments in the game: I think the models know to stop moving when the switch goes to home, but the hit boxes don’t (since the creators clearly don’t notice those are independent from each other). Since they are no longer following the models the hit boxes can just zip up to you, through walls, and kill you.

5:30 Now you wouldn't think this way, but Thimble Theatre Popeye comics usually gave Popeye a gallion. Nary a steampowered vessel in sight. Sometimes the gallion wouldn't even fit near a regular port so when his friends went on adventures, they had to take a lifeboat away from the port to board the gallion.
However that's a moot point because comics with Bluto being after Olive don't really let Popeye be an actual sailor. The whole canon regarding seafaring is a mess, so let's stick with the oldest Fleischer cartoons for the funniest and most accessible portrayals.

I’d like to point out that the ship Popeye was on in the Popeye Arcade game is a Galleon.
Oh, I see why Popeye dies randomly. Look what's above him during the death animation: it's the vulture. If Popeye touches its shadow as it descends, he dies. What a glaring programming error.
And I thought the hitboxes in Dark Souls 2 were bad.
I think I have an explanation for the dumb no enemy insta deaths. every time we saw it I saw the vulture above, maybe the vulture is the reason.

My mind is blown. I had no idea that the Robin Williams Popeye movie did so badly. From the time I saw it as a young kid, I remember always loving it.
I feel the same about the Rocky and Bullwinkle movie from the year 2000. I remember wanting to watch it when they advertised it when I was little.
Finally watched it in 2014 before Mr. Peabody and Sherman came out in theaters, and I had a pretty good time watching it. 😊

How the hell can you screw up Popeye!? He's a character tailor made for video games, just put him in an action platformer or a beat-em-up! If it were up to me I give this IP to Sega and have the same crew who work on the Yakuza series make the game.
What about the people behind Cuphead? They clearly have a love for early twentieth-century animation, and the side-scrolling platformer format would work well for Popeye. You could even have Bluto as a second player!

Having the Popeye characters stylized after the 1930s Thimble Theatre Comics and the Fleischer cartoons (and the stock art made for promotional material for Modern Popeye merchandise), while recreating and extending music based on the Arcade Game (as well as a remix of Octopus from Game and Watch Gallery, which in of itself is a remix of the Level 1 theme from the Popeye game).
Have a Thimble Theatre Museum to showcase different cartoons, comics and other cool stuff like merchandise of the past, as well as character profiles for recurring popular characters like Popeye, Olive Oyl, Brutus J. Bluto, Willington J. Whimpy, the Sea Hag, and Swee’Pea, including obscure characters like Nana Oyl, Eugene the Jeep, Sutra Oyl, Ham Gravy, Rough House, George W. Geezil and the Big Guy (AKA, Thimble Theatre’s version of God).

Omg I loved the live action popeye movie as a kid. My mom found it in the $5 movie bin and for some reason we LOVED IT. It’s so corny but the sets and atmosphere are great, definitely worth a watch if you can find it cheap.
Man that Popeye film is actually real underrated. It's a solid Robert Altman movie with a great Robert Williams performance and amazing soundtrack from Harry Nilsson.
It's one of the worst movies ever made.
