It took a lot of courage to open up and share this. Thank you for trusting us, and letting us hear what we needed to hear as well.
Also, I watch NSS for the fail, as well as for the amazing builds and the incredible success; the fail embedded gives me hope that I can do manage something similar. So don't be afraid to be human and share the fail with us - we'll be here cheering you on all the same.

I've always appreciated your storytelling, explanations/talking through stuff, and editing. You've yet to make something I didn't enjoy and I know you didn't make this video to fish for compliments, because that's not the kind of creator you are, but I'm giving one anyways so you know your work and art is appreciated. I've often thought lately about how I hadn't see a video from you in awhile and when your V Rising review dropped, it was very exciting. I personally am really excited to see you around again, and hope you can find a good balance so you can enjoy making videos and avoid burnout.

I’m glad to see that you are valuing your self worth over self imposed expectations. I cannot wait to see what you make in the future! Also thanks for letting us know what’s been troubling you, it’s always a good thing when people open up about what has been bothering them and trying to seek a solution. Sorry about the mini ramble😂 your content is awesome!!

Hey bro I think its cool you made this vid, I found your NSS series during a sorta rough patch and found it very comforting. Just wanted to say that while I've been missing the Space Engineers videos, I've been missing you making videos more than anything else. Hope you start feeling better and I'm excited to see whatever new stuff you've been wanting to try. Just want you to know that while you certainly can't make everyone like you, you can definitely appreciate the ones who do. Only the best 👍

You're right - you don't owe anyone online anything. The 300 day PZ series is one of my favorite of all time, and while I'd like to see another run in the same style, I get wanting to just move on. I did the same with a channel I started years ago. Got some traction and immediately lost all motivation to keep doing it. Things IRL are more important.

  • @thedatatreader

The fact that you soldiered on in spite of failure looming was one of the things that drew me to your videos, starting with No Suit Survival.
Few people attempted such a challenge as that degree of difficulty would inevitably lead to down time due to constant character deaths, and the sheer amount of rebuilding would make progress near impossible. As creating content goes, this is even more difficult as it's hard to make the unending failure entertaining or even compelling.
In spite of that though, you found a way to make those failures fun, and you even carved your way up to space in the face of storms that destroyed everything you created.
You even created your own personal aesthetic and soundtrack that I feel helps you stand out, and no matter what crazy scheme you want to attempt, I am certain you will find a way to inject those unique qualities into it, failure or not.

Hello there my friend, I met you in 2021 with a video called NSS Ep.3. At that moment I was having one of the worst moments of my life, and for some reason I connected a lot with you, I had a very good moment watching your video and it continued with all the subsequent ones. You gave me something to look forward to every day, something to have some excitement about when I had nothing. You eventually became my favorite creator, and I know it's a little strange because you don't know me, but I consider you my friend. I would like to remind you in this difficult moment for you how important you were to me (and many others) in my most difficult moment. I will always continue waiting for a video from you and to hear from you, you are a very good creator, and you have a very sincere and fun personality. I am sure that wherever you stand, success will flourish as it has until now.
Always here for you, my friend.

Man, I feel you. The self expectation once you make a huge video is something that took me a bit to get through. You can own it, you DID that, it blew up for a reason. I'll admit I'm guilty of being jealous of your success and wondering why I didn't get it but like, that's super narcissistic and egotistical. I didn't earn my big videos any more than you earned yours. Honestly, I just fell upward.
I hope you find or already have the passion that started this in the first place, can be forgiving to yourself if it doesn't work out, and allow yourself to take pride in everything you've done.
Also, we have the same chair

Going Viral, as you did, while being still a rather small channel isn't easy, I guess. I can't relate due to my own experiences. But I've heard creators say that a lot in recent months. It sets your own expectations super high and is almost a guarantee for failure. You are a cool dude, and I have subscribed since you played Space Engineers only because your builds are insane! I was glad for you and the sudden success. You are likeable and also a very good gamer. Don't worry too much. Try, fail and just try again. You have the best conditions to actually grow this channel to something big imho. Cheers to you!
P.s.: I myself, want to start uploading on my channel and I am procrastinating now for more than five months, just because I can't overcome my own expectations. I have friggin everything set up. I got the equipment, I got the memes on my hard-drive, I have the software... I got everything. I could just start to make a video right NOW, with like four clicks. And I don't do it, because I wanna be the new Jacksepticeye/Pewdiepie whatever.... It's absolute BS and not how YT works, but my emotional self has to catch up with my rational self that already knows: Just try, fail and try again.
The struggle is real and it's everywhere! :D
Keep it up! I'm sure this channel will be big!

man so glad you got this out there, I've felt that feeling of not deserving the success you've been given (even if mine is 10x smaller then yours) and I struggled with posting videos that don't do as well as the previous, but so good to hear another creator talking about the inner struggle of feeling like you need to please everyone, when in the end your content should be what you want it to be not what you think people want.

Your brother seems like a genuinely wise man and a fine brother indeed. That same thing he's been trying to drive home with you is something I've been trying to help my own brother grasp, as he truly feels the weight of his failures in the context of others despite being such an incredibly good and caring person.
Failure is a necessary, unavoidable component of success. Your brother is right, you don't owe anybody, anything, except yourself. You owe it to yourself, to have love and respect enough for yourself, to pursue whatever it is that truly lights the fire inside.
In this video, you said that you're going to start trying to do the things you want to do, regardless of how others perceive and regardless of success or failure.
_Please do EXACTLY that, and nothing less!_ You deserve to give yourself the liberation of that decision.
Also, you said you didn't "deserve it" (I'm assuming you're referring to the 300 Days of Zomboid series).
Bro, you didn't just hit the UA-cam lottery, what carried the success of those videos was YOU and the extremely fun and interesting and imaginative personality you have. You literally invigorated me to play Zomboid again during one of the deepest depressions I've ever had in my life so far at 34, and at that time I needed that little bit of motivation to just play a video game more than I can possibly communicate, as I believed I would never have that fire again, and that broke me inside for a while. And what lit that fire in me? It was _exclusively_ by merit of your expression of motivation and way of setting your own goals in the game, and your willingness to EMBRACE FAILURE within that context!
You are wildly underestimating yourself and the spirit of creativity and fun that you so clearly harbor. I don't mean to lecture you man, I just really want you to hear this perspective sincerely from someone who you can trust isn't directly incentivized by trying to "make you feel better" as it were due to the obligations of a close relationship. In other words, you can trust I'm not trying to placate you due to a pre-existing relationship where it's expected of me to do so.
Anyways, I have really enjoyed seeing you on cam (I totally thought you were asian and I don't understand why or how that strong perception came about! 😂) and I really look forward to any content you put out going forward, be it PZD related or otherwise, and regardless of whether it's a shining success or whatever.
Personally, I'm here because I like your uniqueness in creative expression, and I hope this comment somehow finds you well and that it helps to illustrate to you that those limiting self-reflections you might be imposing on yourself are based not in the evidence or substance of reality, but based on the self-consciousness of the ego of comparison.
Let that go, and above all, please be kind to yourself in your mind.
Choose your words with yourself carefully, as what you speak to yourself, you will express and manifest outwardly into the world.
    As above, so below.
    As within, so without.
    “What you think, you become.
    What you feel, you attract.
What you imagine, you create.” ~ Buddha

I absolutely loved your NSS videos my dude! The way you creatively came up with solutions and actually engineered your way through problems was awesome for two reasons. One is that you still took the time to make things aesthetically pleasing when you could've made everything boring and ugly. Two is that for a game about engineering, up until watching you play I had never seen anyone actually engineer anything to solve problems in a sensible fashion. Most SE videos they've got the jetpack on at all times, and make all in one ships that can do everything and have no soul. You're absolutely right in that you don't need anyone to like you, but we here do like you. If you're done posting I respect that and I appreciate that we had you for the time we did. Take care dude! 🤙

Hey man, don't beat yourself up. This is a common issue among many UA-camrs. I can relate in some ways, as a musician. It's really hard when something is your hobby, and you have one video do far better than everything else, and then that becomes the new baseline. It also gets you to start focusing on the wrong thing, the popularity. The reason you get popular in the first place is because you were being you and focusing on the fun, and just doing your thing. Once you get popular, you start trying to chase that and it's easy to forget what got you there in the first place. You start looking for some formula for success, when in reality you had it all along. It's nice to hear you say you're ready for failure. It's a really hard hurdle to get over, but it's necessary for your mental health and success in general. Any successful self-made person will tell you failure is what got them there. Failure is a good thing, Yin needs Yang.
Also just wanted to say, your 300 movie is only 10 months old, and I've watched it twice. I've never watched a video that long multiple times, even years later. You're a very talented story-teller. But don't burn yourself out with PZ if you're not enjoying it as much anymore, do the other things you want to do. Sure, they won't be nearly as popular at first, but over time people will start to come here for YOU, not the game. Looking forward to whatever else you do man, take whatever time you need. Peace.

ADVICE-NEVER BE STOP TO CONTINUE A PROJECT THATS GOING WELL JUST BECAUSE YOU FEEL THAT IT WONT BE RECEIVED AS WELL AS THE LAST PART BECAUSE IT WILL STILL APPEAL TO PEOPLE(not always as much)FOR THE SAME REASONS THE LAST TIME DID
AS WELL AS ÎN MOVIES THE ORIGINAL IS ALWAYS BETTER BUT EVERYBODY APRECIATES A GOOD SERIES IF THE MAKERS DONT LOSE INTEREST!!
KEEP MILKING THE COW THE WORST THING YOU CAN DO ÎS JUST MOVE TO ANOTHER PROJECT SUCCES DOSENT COME ON A RGULAR BASIS IT IS A PROCESS OF TRIAL AND ERROR
THIS SERIES UP TO 300 days WAS A BANGER AND YOU SHOULD HAVE BEAT THE IRON WHEN IT WAS HOT SINCE YOU WOULD GET LOTS OF VIEWS UNTIL YOU MOVE ON IF YOU SAW THAT THE SAME APPROACH DIDNT MAKE THE VIWERS STANDARDS

Oh man, okay, to start with, you're the main reason why I even made a channel. Like me, I'm sure a lot of others felt inspired by what you did. Your journey on PZ was amazing. And if your next video doesn't do well, it's fine too; your subs will be here supporting you in the end.
And it's fine to fail. It doesn't mean it's not going to hurt, but just keep on going. Heck, my latest video flopped like a fish on dry land after seeing good growth, and that hurt so much. But, we like you, Madmavn! And that's who you need to focus on, even if some people don't. Focus on the people who do like you, and try not to think too much (I know it's hard) about the ones who don't. You can't make everyone happy.
I hope to see you soon, whatever game you're thinking of playing next.❤

Hey Mavn! Been awhile since I checked up on you. I remember the first time you made a video like this, and it hit me hard that you were suffering the same things I was. I loved NSS, left before your 100 days series. But what really impacted me was your other (presumably privated/deleted) video like this one. If you continue ANYTHING on this channel, keep up these mental health/check in videos. I'd much rather know you're doing well and having fun with this channel than to only see "that persona" as you called it.
I really hope you can find what works and what you need Mavn, good luck, there's always going to be those rooting for YOU, not for your next video.

You never failed though, as long as even 1 person enjoyed your content, you were successful in changing someone’s entire day for the better! I watched your PZ300 days movie and I was having a bad day so far, I binged the entire thing and I was ecstatic the rest of the day! It was also the first time I sat down and watched some random person’s hours long video, I’m glad I did!

Props to you man for getting it off you’re chest don't ever be afraid to expand and grow and to be yourself. Don't let fear stop you from doing the things you wanna do. I know it's hard for people to have different opinions about you but that's all they are words. Just keep doing what you’re doing and I look forward to see what comes next on this channel! 😁👍

Hey Mavn, try not to worry about popularity, youtube is fickle, people will come and go, you got a a couple videos that did far better than you expected, don't let them define your content. Do what you want, your core audience will stay with you. If you follow trends you will go down the "New Coke" route and lose the people who like you for you. focus on the games you enjoy, in the format you enjoy, whether it is "successful" or not shouldnt be a factor in your decisions. Your core fans like watching your stuff because we enjoy you and your ideas.
I hope you feel better mentally, we have missed your videos.

I've heard a lot of UA-camrs say this, please if you read this, failure is okay its how you build and grow, if you don't have a flop of a video how do you know that you need to do better than it, look at constructive criticism learn from it, don't let it get you down, if you need someone talk to I can insure there are plenty of people out there who are willing to talk to you about this, including me and idek you, please take care of yourself, no one needs to like you as long as you are happy with yourself and your creations you will never need that validation from others, as some guy said that I thought was beautiful. don't spend your time trying to catch butterflies, create a beautiful garden and butterflies will come to you in time, and if they don't at least you still have that beautiful garden
    Stay strong my guy ❤❤

Man, I'm happy to see you somewhat happy and healthy. Stupid to be worried about some youtuber I guess, but I admit I was kinda worried.
Follow your goals and dreams since if you're happy, you'll easily infect others in your life being happy for you. Either if close friends or us random people.
    Stay healthy and happy everyone!

MadMavn, the very best advice I've ever heard is: You Be YOU! That's it, just allow yourself to be YOU. If you want to play Space Engineers and give helpful hints, laughing at yourself for doing the opposite of a "no brainer", of just buildin' and chillin', that would be fine. If you want to play PONG and giggle yourself silly, DO IT! If you think playing Project Zomboid sounds great to YOU, then do it! YOU BE YOU! Do your own thang! Just have fun with it. You've already "ARRIVED". People know who you are, so you HAVE your audience. Now go and create something, young man! We'll be here watching when you post it. We may not "like" or "love" YOU, because we don't really KNOW you. But your content is some of the very best out there, and we (your audience) are here to stay. Love your channel!!!

One thing I've always kept in the back of my head is that "Those who have achieved success didn't quit when they failed." Meaning failure in anything you strive for is inevitable, it's up to you to either give up and try something else, or learn from your failure and try again. Failure is ok. Failure is natural. It is how we grow as humans and learn the things that don't work so we can discover what does work.
If you spend your time worrying about what others think of you instead of spending your time on thinking about what you think of yourself, you're not going to have a good time. No one's opinion about you matters more than what your opinion of yourself does. Who cares what others think, if you're not someone's cup of tea, then you're not someone's cup of tea. It is what it is. You got this, Mavn. You're doing well. Thank you for the content you create and I look forward to more of your content.

My man, relax a little, take your time, but if it helps I would like to give my two cents of opinion here:
Yeah, you got lucky with those Project Zomboid videos, but that doesn't mean you have to hold the bar at that level, just be glad for the algorithm and keep going with what you had, it clearly works out if did that time.
Secondly, don't worry so much about what will happen next because everything that does will only be a result of you acting, but if you don't do anything, then nothing will happen as a result of your inaction.
What I'm trying to say is, just keep doing what you want and see where that leads you, don't worry so much about what would happen, because you can't know for sure and that will only serve to keep you from doing what you want to do.
    Best of luck

We all have that constant desire for people to like us. As a 53 year old, retired Army Sgt; trust me... some will, some won't... so what, move on. I've been here since NSS Ep 1 (on a different account because I was still in the Army at the time). I would love to see NSS come back for a season 3, but whatever you decide to do, just do it... Kind of like Nike, brother. Just do you. Shalom

A very healthy outlook and I'm glad you're taking this self-awareness introspection journey. Self-acceptance is and should be first and foremost. Once you realize that true happiness comes from within and never something dependent upon other people to provide, true wisdom is within reach. Only you have the power to control how you feel, how you respond to the world and what you want to make of it for yourself, to live in harmony with your own values.
If you're interested in psychology topics at all, I encourage you to look up the INFP personality type. I think you might find something interesting there.

Most people will likely agree, your content when you started was simple, elegant and easy to follow. these first episode's of space engineers really was the definition of making videos for fun, not as a job or to appease the audience.
We the viewers just want to watch you enjoy the games you wish to play. Remember this, you are the content not the game or progress. If your happy making videos and playing, so are we

Hey bro, It’s ya boi Nick. Your videos are of great quality. I haven’t seen all of them, but your talent is clear. Obviously, you should do what you feel is prudent for your channel, as well as what might bring you success; that said, I have a few thoughts.
    1. Most importantly, do what sparks passion and brings you joy. This is not only important for your own happiness, but also the quality of the video. Mix it up, go crazy, be as genuine as you can. People will flock to you like a guiding star.
    2. Prioritize community over raw views. Certainly views bring the cash, which might be the ultimate goal for most. This video has a crazy amount of comments proportionally. Your community cares about you and further videos.
    3. Establish some form of consistency in uploads. The actual length between uploads seems to matter less than the actual consistency of said uploads. JonTron uploads like once a year and people are fine with it because they have become accustomed to it.
I hope that none of this seems patronizing in any way, these are simply some of my thoughts as a MadMavn Fan. Thanks!
