Just a note, Gotoh offer the 1996T with different block heights of 33mm, 36mm or 40mm. The guitar in the video would have benefitted from the 33mm block size as a closer size to the original block.
Gotoh ge1996t...My preferred replacement unit for upgrade 👍👍👍👍.You rock Joe🤘🤘🤘 FYI --THE BAR ACTUALLY SCREWS IN TO THE UNIT SO THAT YOU CAN SET YOUR HEIGHT AND THEN ADJUST THE TENSION WITH THE ALLEN SCREW ON THE BACK OF THE COLLAR
Great video, thank you! I would also add that out of the box Floyd is absolutely not lubricated. Before installation, it would be nice to lubricate the fine-tuning screws. It is also necessary to lubricate the saddles and knives with graphite grease. This way we will get rid of unnecessary friction and the guitar will build perfectly.
The Gotoh does come pre-lubed. I know because when I had to replace the block with a shorter one, I had to remove all the saddles and the plate was oily where each saddle had been.
I said uh oh when you said 40mm block. You needed the 33mm block version for a recessed trem. Not sure if you changed the bridge studs over but its worth doing. The Gotoh units are better and they have a lockdown feature like an Ibanez Edge. Nice guitar 👍
15:35 When you wedge the cardboard under the trem to set the angle, it's probably a good idea to ensure that it's not pressing against the screws! Blocking the trem from the back side by wedging cardboard between the block and the body is probably a better way of doing it? That way you can get it fully set up, intonated and tuned with a level bridge, and then remove the cardboard/block to adjust the spring tension until it equalises.
Been using this same method for many years. Never had an issue, and the setups have always been a success. Thanks for your input and I hope you have a wonderful Christmas holiday sir. 🎄
Right on Brother 👊🏼 I am not a big fan of the Floyd Rose special. I am a big fan of the Original Floyd Rose from Germany because I am a Floyd snob 😆 but those Gotoh Floyds are excellent. They are quality and reliable. Great choice my friend and thanks for sharing
Good choice!!!! lately weve sadly been upgrading OFRs to Gotoh 1996t's. Actually working better for us. I saw some hints that something changed with OFRs and manufacturers were having issues, but not sure
I have installed the Gotoh 1996T on several of my guitars..excellent at a great price....what is the name of that tool that has the handle with the 3mm hex for the lockinh nut bolts and string lock bolts..and where did you get it ?
Thank you Ross, for commenting my friend. You can find that tool here www.fu-tone.com/product/3mm-premium-t-handle-wrench/ I hope you have a wonderful day sir and God bless. 🎶 🙏
Actually, you may have messed up on the block. They come in three different sizes, and my Ibanez needed a 33 mm. It depends on how thick the body of your guitar is. Will the back cover fit back on it, without rubbing? I also got the locking screws shortened and rechamfered, so they wouldn't rub the body. But I've heard that regular Floyd Rose locking screws are actually a little bit shorter, and will fit in there. So, that could be an option too. I love my GOTOH!!! I don't think there's a better tremolo out there, really. 😁😎
It's a shame the Floyd's come with tiers of quality. Most out there seem to be the junk tier. The Gotoh comes with one tier of quality. That says everything right there.
Yes sir, the Gotoh Floyd Rose system will fit perfectly. What I love about the Gotoh Floyd Rose system, is that one end will hook into the post. And the other end of the system doesn't have the hook design to it. It's just a flat edge. So this eliminates the worry of it lining up perfectly with the posts. All of the systems that I had before the upgrades, were Floyd Rose 1000's. You will be good with the Gotoh Floyd Rose unit. I hope you have a wonderful day sir and God bless!! 🎶
Great vid. To be honest, I thought you were going to change out the Gotoh anchor studs as well, drilling out the original holes to fit. I was really wanting to see this done with hand tools, lol. I keep thinking the lower quality FRS posts have wear spots in them. Great vid none the less, I really enjoyed watching you do the swap! 🤘
Thank you so much, Justin!! I did eventually swap out the studs, with upgraded ones. I ordered some better ones from Amazon. And it did make a difference on the quality of the tuning stability. I hope you have a wonderful day and thank you again for watching the video. 🙏🏻🎸💯🤘

Dumb question, but is there any routing needed? I have Jackson Kellys and I’m thinking about putting this trem in both of them to replace the crappy Floyd Specials.
Thank you for watching and commenting sir!! Man, that’s not a dumb question at all. No sir, with the replacements that I had performed (which were Floyd Rose Specials) there was no routing needed. So I would imagine you shouldn’t have to deal with that. Should just drop right into place. But may I say, do yourself a favor and also upgrade the trem posts also. If you don’t, the upgraded Floyd will not hold tuning, because the trem posts are soft metal. You can find Floyd Rose 1000 Trem Posts on Amazon, with no problem. I hope you have a wonderful day and God bless!! 🙏🏻🤘🎸💯🎵🎶
Thank you so much, Andy!! Yes sir, I was definitely impressed with the Brass Block that comes with the Gotoh. It does make a difference with sustainability. I used to never believe that. But I know now that it works. Thank you so much for watching and commenting my friend and Rock On!! 🎶🎵🤟

Thank you for the comment, Mr. Randles. If it were me, I would check two things. First, the tuners. I'm not sure what tuners you have on the guitar, but if they're inexpensive...this could be a reason. Second, the nut. Also, the same applies for this as well. It could possibly be cut poorly, so tuning would definitely be affected. I hope this helps my friend. Thank you again and I hope you have a wonderful day sir. 🎵
@@TheJoeWentzProjectTVthanks for replying. Did it stay well in tune after a pull up? I heared that gotoh has a rounded tip edge and post compared to a sharp edge of a floyd.
Anyone experienced any issues with adjusting intonation after installing Gotoh FR? Is there enough clearance in FR cavity? I think my standard FR cavity is 80mm, so just wondering if there's enough room for those saddle screws?
I had that issue with a couple of my guitars. But then I found that you can swap out the long screws, for shorter ones. It makes things a lot easier, if you run into that problem. The link below will direct you to where you can purchase the replacement screws. It comes with three types. The long locking screws, the front saddle screws...and the locking screws for the nut. And the great thing is, these replacement screws are stainless steel. A fantastic upgrade, if you choose to do so. Thanks for watching and commenting my friend. I’m looking to replace my special on a Jackson kvxmg and I was curious if this trem would be an easy swap. I really like string spacing of the special but the quality is really bad. Did you buy a new nut or does it come with new trem? Cheers!
Hey Chris, thank you so much for watching and commenting my friend. I just swapped out the trem for the new Gotoh Floyd Rose system. And yes, I found it to be an easy swap. I didn't replace the locking nut, as the stock one on the Jackson was sufficient. I hope this helps and I hope you have a wonderful day and keep rocking!! 🤘🎵🎶🎸
Thank you so much for watching and commenting my friend. I honestly don't know if the D-Tuna would work on the Gotoh Floyd Rose. I would imagine that it would. Hey Lukster, thank you for your comment my friend. Yes sir, I just left the original posts in, because I didn't see any reason to remove them. They were fine the way they were. Everything still lined up perfectly. So I just decided to go with that. And it did very well. Thank you for commenting sir and I hope you have a wonderful day!! 🎸
Just a FYI. Replacing the studs depends on the new bridge base plate material. If the old plate was zinc alloy, and the studs are zinc alloy, and the new bridge has a steel base plate = change the posts to steel ones as well (the bridge likely came with them). Always make sure the posts are made of the same hardness as the base plate (knife edges) or one of the parts will wear down prematurely. The worst thing you can do is upgrade to a steel base plate and use it with softer (zinc alloy) posts. The Floyd Rose special uses a steel base plate and so does the gotoh so I would imagine it is ok to leave them. I bet the gotoh studs (anchors) and posts weigh more than the special though.
@@salimerkoFrom what I've gathered the mounting studs for the gotoh are actually a lot bigger than the floyd rose ones so you would have to drill new holes into your guitar... Or you could buy Floyd Rose original studs
