  • I hope this was easy enough to follow. I apologize for the lack of "good" camera angles, but that's a tight spot to get into even without a camera. Check out the links below for the stuff I used in this video so you can do this job your self!

"..for the intake, but this one is going to be significantly more difficult to get to." I love it. Thanks for the great mechanical content, brother.

They sell new old stock O-Rings for the Big Red and 250SX, I bought a couple.

Just fyi. To find the compression stroke. Put your thumb over the spark plug hole. Turn the crank until it blows air against your thumb. The piston will be on the way up on compression stroke.

I agree, but you still have to find TDC. But that’s a good way to get there fast

Isn’t that an 86? I see the two part heat shield. I thought that was only on the 86 and 87s.?

It’s definitely an 85. It’s stamped on the steering stem

I did a new piston and rings like two months ago. It was running horrible. I took it to the dealership to get a valve adjustment. They got the bike running like decent again but now it’s blowing white smoke on start up and it sounds like there’s heavy, tick sound coming from the motor louder than normal. Any idea.

Probably timing chain slack adjuster. The OEM self adjusting ones are impossible to find but they do make aftermarket manual adjustment ones. Give that a go.

I have an 86 Honda big red and recently tried to use kickstart on it and it was just stuck…like wouldn’t move. I thought maybe a dropped a valve so I pulled the engine and disassembled. Valves were ok but while assembling realized that it got stuck again when I installed rocker arm-valve cover. Can a bad rocker arm cause that?

I’ve personally never had a valve cover keep a valve from opening unless the cover itself was damaged or bent inwards. I really doubt it would be the rocker

Thanks so much for responding! I bought a reconditioned cover and arms already, hopefully that solves the problem, but I appreciate the input👍🏻
