Yea, all these contracts don't make sense to me. How can Soto be making more money then Ohtani is baffling. Same in Football. How is Trevor Lawrence the highest paid QB? When your a billionaire I guess it doesn't matter. If you want something, you get it. Even if the amount makes no sense.

Not a Dodgers fan, but I will pay to go see Ohtani. Will not spend a dime just to see Soto. Cohen's mouth and pride are on the line, and he likes to make a splash on the bb world, but paying $765M for one player is a fool's game. Don't care how rich he is this deal is all about Cohen and not about how great a hitter Soto is. Met fans should care about the amount of money he is paying because nothing is for free. Fans will have to cough up more for tickets, merch, food, parking, etc in the coming years. Soto does not have the marketability that Ohtani has nor the drive to be the best player. Ohtani is all about the game and not the money, and that's what makes him unique and valuable to the team and Ohtani fans across the globe.

This is simply true. Soto appears to be a journeyman so far in his career. Traded around. He’s a hired gun. I could see the Mets finding themselves in a bad spot in a few years and then just offloading his contract. Cohen is really smart. When it was obvious that Verlander and Scherzer didn’t work out, he figured out a way to get out of it. He would happily eat some of the cost and trade him away.
Ohtani getting that 700m is one thing. With the amount of buzz that he brings, you could make a case that he’s underpaid. Even beyond his skill on the field, he brings eyeballs.

Mets control the opt out, they can raise the annual amount to 55 M for the last 10 years, another 40 M total, with the signing bonus, over 880 M total, crazy for a .285 hitter with 35 HR's and 100 RBI's. Average fielder and baserunner..

The Yankees played the Mets like a fiddle. They pumped up Soto's price knowing they weren't going to sign him. How is a guy who averages 5 WAR a year in his prime a generational talent exactly? The rate is ~$6 million per WAR. Soto's getting $12 million/WAR for FIFTEEN YEARS. Players start declining around 30 (eg: Mike Trout).... Soto's "26 years old". This contract could be crippling and I'm not exaggerating. - WW

It was really a battle for New York. Cohen saw it beyond just the monetary value of Juan Soto the player. He wanted to turn a good portion of Yankees fans into Mets fans. It was a turf war. This is going to cause a migration of fans in terms of viewership and sales. A lot of Dominicans will start rooting for the mets and Puerto Ricans are rooting for Lindor. It was a powerplay in terms of taking over the popularity of the team in the city. He wanted to shift a Yankee dominant NY to a NY where the population of NY fans are more Mets than Yankees thus increasing overall sales by a lot. Hal knew this and thats why the bidding went so high. It's not that Juan Soto's talent is worth 765 million, it's the shift in power and sales for the Mets that comes with the signing of Soto. He was more the symbol of the catalyst of changing a NY that was more Yankees dominant to a Met dominant NY. It was smart. Cohen will get a lot of that money back, a lot of it at the expense of the Yankees overall income, especially for the young kids growing up who will tune in for the next 10 years in the bronx. Here's to the future Bronx Mets fans!

Boras declined, he said they want higher amount per year the most. Steve went to 600, The Yankees matched them. Steve went to 51 a year plus a 75 million check upfront. And his family get their own suite in Citifield. Boras gave Yankees a chance to match. And Steinbrenner said no, hes gone as high as hes willing. But came back the next day for 765 for 16 years. And Boras said you are down 51 million, and the Yankees declined to raise or lower the year.

Same way the MLBPA and Marvin Miller fought their way out of it by striking will be tbe same way the majority of tbe owners will be locking out the players when the curreny CBA expires. Baseball needs a salary cap and a floor as well for it to economically survive in the long run. There needs to be a happy medium.
