View from the Only Deck on New Year's Day: VWL315 on Limerick City Bus Route 306 on Monday, 1/1/24.

- A short recording on (an almost empty) NTA/Bus Éireann (Roxboro, Limerick) Wright Eclipse Urban Volvo B7RLE VWL315 (12-D-8576), on a miserably wet and quiet, New Year's Morning, Monday 1st January 2024 as it operated on Limerick City Route 306 between Henry Street and Hassett's Cross via the Ennis Road and Shelbourne Road.
By this date, VWL315 was one of only five VWLs, indeed one of only five single-deck buses remaining in the BÉ city fleet, the class operating fewer than 10% of services.
The VWLs were due to be displaced by the deployment of up to thirty-two Wrightbus Electroliner double deck buses early in the new year as it had been announced that the BÉ city fleet would be entirely zero- or low- tailpipe emission from early 2024 (electric or hybrid).
As a daily user of the city services myself, I had only been on a handful of VWLs during the 2023 calendar year, so this was probably my farewell run on VWL315 if not the class itself in the city.

I am not sure when yet Liam. I passed the depot on the train yesterday and there seemed to be only one EWD there. Gmac (Electrical utility contractors from Armagh) were still there too but there can't be much left to do at this stage. If I was to lay a bet, I would say the VWLs will be here for 6 weeks more.

I have heard from 2 separate drivers today (Tue 16/1/24) Liam that the EWDs are formally entering service on the weekend of Saturday 24th/Sunday 25th February, so that will be over two months since EWD102 arrived at Roxboro.
I imagine that the VWLs will hang around till then. I haven't seen VWL325 in weeks but I have seen the other four around alright in recent days.
Also, PAD117 or 118 is reportedly migrating to Capwell this week, presumably to be used to train their drivers in, in advance of the arrival of how ever many more PADs head south. Maybe all twenty-one will and maybe all the VWDs and VWLs will go to Louth. Time will tell.
