    And now I feel bad for those times I was internally critical of how far the bus driver had stopped from the kerb. Like others I randomly got shown this by youtube's algorithm. However, it is a great thing to watch for anyone that drives to see what bus drivers have to deal with and to demonstrate how you need to give them space. Also if possible not to park too near a bus stop.
    Doing it from the point of view of a car driver will never reinforce it enough that buses are hard to drive.
    As an aside, tail swing used to be a small problem on cars but for the vast majority these days the rear is not very far back from the rear wheels. When it was tail swing was something you would have had to deal with.
    Found out about it when I wondered about if it was a thing for cars.

      The safety barrier is to discourage people from crossing there. As the UK is not exactly blessed with lots of space, the barrier has to be near the kerb, because we need the space on the pavement (as in sidewalk). If you put further in the pavement would no longer be wide enough for wheelchair users/prams etc.

    It is only in the past 20 years or so that buses have had these projecting front mirrors. It is obvious to all (except the vehicle designers, obviously) that such projections are unacceptable and inviting problems. Similarly the rear overhang. I remember when London introduced long single-deck buses in 1968 the number of bus stops that were knocked down when buses pulled out sharply from the kerb. The fault lies in the design which, in more sensible times, would have been rejected or, more accurately, would never have seen the light of day. It seems we have learned nothing in recent years.
    In addition, the space needed for projecting mirrors reduces the number of vehicles that can be accomodated in the garages. Perhaps that is why so many buses are dumped in open yards these days.....
    What happened to commonsense?

      @stevesales4263 3 роки тому +2

      Not a well considered view. Firstly, legislation demands that the N/S mirror is viewed through a cleared part of the screen. I can assure you that the blind spots from a mirror placed further back are much greater. The danger from driving a bus with a nearside mirror obscured by rain, dirt or misted interior glass cannot be over emphasised. Any good driver of a large vehicle relies on good rear and side vision. I speak as a bus driver of 45 years experience, commercial vehicle advanced driver, (test taken in an old manual double deck bus) and instructor of many years. I have driven buses with tiny round side mounted mirrors and all sizes up to the modern large front mounted options. Modern mirrors and position greatly enhance the rear view, the only downside being blind spots to the front.

  • @millomweb

    Well, I say - that if there's a raised kerb at the bus stop, the driver should raise the bus fron its travelling height ;)

      Actually, a retest would not be effective. The idea of the driver CPC was to provide periodic training. Unfortunately, many companies don' consider what will actually assist the company and drivers, but just consider it as a cost. I know of companies that have just got the drivers to repeat the same module 5 times, usually Customer Care which probably requires the least effort. Properly considered and constructed modules can include driving time and within the 5 year period should ideally have at least one "on road" module. The way forward is for at least 1 driving module to be made compulsory.

    I wish bus drivers in New York City know this. They will pull in and out of bus stops when on coming traffic is coming. Unsafe for Drivers and Cyclists who are overtaking the bus.
    Also if we want to fix the issue, we have to make at least 60 feet of space for 40 foot buses. This can be done by placing a stop at the corner or a street.

    • @stevesales4263
      @stevesales4263 3 роки тому

      Always a cause for discussion, however, no simple answer. Every bus must be wheelchair accessible. However, if a ramp fails on route the driver is permitted to finish the journey. Wheelchair spaces are limited, so if the bus has its legal maximum on board, no further wheelchairs can be loaded. If other passengers, with pushchairs for instance, are taking the space, the driver can ask them to move but has no powers to enforce it. Also, if you look at the legal lettering inside the bus, you will see different capacities. Seated, standing, wheelchairs and then as wheelchairs need more space, the variations when wheelchairs are on board. A driver can't ask a couple of able bodied passengers to leave the bus to enable a chair to board.

      It's intentional. Otherwise it would put the driver behind the front wheels which make for very bad visibility as UK buses have flat faces. Also the entrance needs to be flat so people can board as the tyres are very large. Lorries get around this by adding steps to climb up. But that also makes it too high for old Doris lol

      Can I just say as a bus driver and previous controller, there is NO penalty for being late. Controllers rushing people is actually very rare. It's usually new drivers fall victim to this idea that they're being rushed because they get asked why they're late. Experienced drivers don't suffer with this.
