Super Shredder looked great on the big screen. I loved how they had the water glistening off his armor. You're right tho about his death, everybody at the time hated how Super Shredder was killed off in 5 seconds. I still have a faint memory bitching about it to my dad after walking out of theater...but I did like the movie, I was 7 after all.
For me as a kid, I felt it was darker. I remember seeing a lot of ugly colors and blackness and the dirty, grimy NYC looked liked the city we'd go go. Splinter hung with blood on his face and the turtles using their wepons. The sequel had so many cartoony sounds in the background, it was cleaner and more colorful.
Me too. I still enjoyed it when I was a kid but rewatching those movies as an adult I definitely have a better appreciation for the first one as it was more comic book accurate. Even the story drew inspiration from the comics as well.
Agreed. At the age of 12 I didn't get to see many movies in the theater but I was loving the turtles back then so I had to see that movie. That year I saw 'TMNT 2' and 'The Rocketeer' and I was rather disappointed that 'The Rocketeer' ended up being the better movie. I'll never forgive all those mouthy parents for pressuring the studio to tone-down the violence, or Eastman and Laird for restricting character availability. We coulda had a better movie, and maybe even a great trilogy.
When I was a kid The Turtles were my childhood. Every birthday my parents would take me to Toys R Us and I would basically spend all my money on every Turtle thing I could get. The documentary Turtle Power is a really good watch. I couldn't wrap my head around how difficult it was to get funding for the Turtles movies considering it was a billion dollar commodity at the time and even though they basically had to scrape about nine million dollars for the first film and it was the biggest movie of that year, Turtles 2 still had to scrap a lot for "budgetary and time constraints." it's bonkers.
Honorable mention Michael Jai White was in this film as a Foot Soldier, if you watch the Wide screen edition you can see him briefly to the right on the scene when keno infiltrates the foot clan as they're going into the warehouse to begin training

I met Ho Sung Pak at a theater in Chicago, because he was doing publicity for TMNT II, as he was doing the stunt work in the Raphael suit. He was also in Chicago to do all the motion capture for Liu Kang in a little game series called Mortal Kombat
I had a chance to talk with Judith Hoag a few years ago at Steel City Con. She said she was complaining about the working conditions for the actors, not the violence. And yes that women has aged like a fine wine. She's actually better looking now than in the movie.
That makes sense. The second one was non violent so she would have had nothing to complain about so I always found that unlikely that she wouldn't return for that reason.
I remember watching secret of the ooze far more than the first movie when I was a kid but man I can barely watch it as an adult where I still thoroughly enjoy the first one.
Yeah, I liked the second TMNT movie even more than the first one at the time because I was 7 and loved the 80s cartoon. I used to wake up every Saturday morning just to watch that cartoon lol. As the years went on though I appreciate the first TMNT movie much more than the second. I loved the boldness and grittiness of it. The lighting and puppets looked amazing. The music and soundtrack was epic asf! Shredder's had one of the best intro themes I think for a villain ever in any movie. Remember the scene where he talks to the foot clan and he gives his speech? Badass. The guy who played Shredder in the first TMNT did a wonderful job I thought. I loved how he spoke/read his lines.
When the second movie was released I really enjoyed this one more it had everything you wanted in a TMNT movie as a kid. Now that I'm in my 40s I respect the first one for being so faithful to the original comics
Same here. The 2nd one always was my favorite. As a very young kid at the time, it was more appealing being that it's more fun and light hearted than the first. Still is my favorite one to this day, but in all honesty it's only because of the nostalgia I get watching it. If I were to watch both movies for the first time as an adult, the first one definetly would be better
I went on an overseas holiday with family to the uk in 1990. Came home with stacks of “hero turtles” toys and merch. All my mates at school thought it was cheap knock off gear. I have a 9 year old who loves Secret of the ooze but who can’t make it through the first.
I’m 38. I 100% agree that - growing up - the second version was my favorite but as an adult I like the first version more. Both are excellent, though. If either is on TV you can guarantee I am stopping what I’m doing to watch it.
Knowing that the original movies were Golden Harvest Productions (Way of the Dragon, Enter the Dragon, Megaforce) has given me a whole new level of appreciation for these films.
When the Secret of the Ooze came out, we went to see the movie in the theater on opening day, and about two weeks later they sold a VHS tape about the making of the Vanilla Ice scene, which I talked my dad into buying for me, but he thought it was the actual movie. The picture used with Vanilla Ice surrounded by the Turtles was the video tape cover. My dad was upset when he saw that it was only ten minutes, and that it was just about five minutes of making it, and about four minutes of a music video with everyone in the movie, so there are actually two Vanilla Ice Go Ninja videos out there. My favorite quote from the making of video section was Vanilla Ice saying, “They told me the song had to be clean, you know, for the kids, which is me anyway, so…….”Then it cut to the filming of the song with all of the pelvic thrusts. Loved it at the time, now it’s just down right ridiculous, but nostalgia fixes my secret shame.
As a kid, I was the same way: liked part 2 better than 1, then got older and swapped my preference. I had every single ninja turtle action figure and vehicle for the first few years they came out, including the squishy headed original turtles and Shredder. Once TMNT 2 came out, it was almost impossible to find Super Shredder in stores. My mom was a trooper though and found one someone had hidden in Toys R Us, on the very back of the shelf behind a crap ton of other figures. She didn’t normally go out of her way to get toys, but my brother and I were bonkers for the turtles and, outside of holidays, we did all our chores on the farm to get our allowance, which allowed both of us to get a new turtle each week. Before the turtles came along, we just had blocks of scrap wood that we had to pretend were Transformers or GI Joe. We didn’t have shit for toys, other than a few stuffed animals and a handful of He-Man figures. We just made do for the most part. I think she realized we were very keen to do our chores at the prospect of getting a new turtle, so it was just easier to keep us in line, as long as she had a carrot to dangle. Certainly made holiday shopping easy for the most part. Just find anything ninja turtle and we’d be happy...lol...and now I’ve been able to share my turtle fun with my daughter and, at 5, she’s a fan too...of the older stuff.
are you me? and I don't remember being you? not only did I get the standard purple suited version, but I also got the special black suited version that you had to send in clippings from Chef Boyardee for! And I still have them both

Same here, I had the VHS and the nunchucks scene is definitely in there. Same for the cartoon, although it is called hero turtles, it has the nunchucks.
Likewise. It must only of been cut on certain home video releases or something? I know it wasn't ever cut out of the film when it was shown on Sky movies cos that's how I used to watch it regularly from recording it off one of the sky movie channels.
Ninja Turtles II was the first Turtles movie I saw in the cinema - my parents actually let me and my sister go to a cinema and watch it, which was surprising, given the more adult tone of the first movie - I guess they didn't know anything about it. I was very disappointed by the ending - super Shredder killing himself was a terrible way to end it. I also didn't like vanilla ice and the dance number. I loved pretty much everything else - especially Ernie Reyes Jr. and that is because I was a huge fan of Sidekicks TV show, which he co stared - I immediately recognized his credit in the opening of the movie and I got excited - I love all of his scenes, he has more fight scenes than Turtles have in the movie, and he also has a great plot of sneaking into the ranks of the foot clan. Back then I didn't notice the toned down violence, but it was immediately obvious as soon as I re-watched the original movie on VHS - and this basically killed the sequel for me - I never watched it again, while I re-watched the original probably couple of dozens of times. I never saw the 3rd movie - I just lost interest in TMNT franchise altogether. The mid 90s were a terrible time for sequels - everything was made kid friendly, pg13 and devoid of any excitement. Such a waste.
@@eliashuapilla I never saw any of them - as soon as I saw the terrible designs and humor - It was enough for me to not waste my time. But I very much liked the TMNT 2007 movie - it was pretty cool.
Hi mark, big fan! I've been watching your videos for a long time now! Really enjoy them! I'm from liverpool, and spent my youth absolutely loving everything about the 80s! Keep up the good work squire!!!👍👍👍😁😁
31 y/o here, watched it a couple of months ago. I had to skip through certain parts of dialogue and story development but it was still fantastic to watch. I really love the analysis towards the end, and throughout, that they missed the mark by toning down the violence. As someone who was born in '89 and grew up with a ton of 80s influences since I have a sister who is 6 years older than me, and a brother who is 4 years older than me, I got a lot of the hand me downs. And growing up I never could distinguish what it was that was particularly different about them(the 1st and 2nd TMNT live action movies), since the internet was still in development and the times were just different from the flow of instant access to endless information we have available today. But it really was the dark tone from the first one that keeps it relevant today. The Turtle's even went through existential crisis' and battled depression in the first movie when they lost Splinter like he was already dead. Raph goes looking for a fight as is his coping mechanism and stumbles across Casey Jones who easily had the popularity to return to this movie and could have played a relavant role to Keno and played the double agent line getting caught up by The Foot. The second one obviously paces better, but that doesn't always make it a better movie, just easier to watch and digest. The second one has a lot of fantastic elements, but I'm left to wonder at 18:46 just how fucking cool that fight scene would have been, and just all the fight scenes and the overall intensity of the movie if it followed the first movie more thematically. When you said you should do right by your fans and ignore your critics, the example you gave is the one that has ever made the most sense to me. Its still a gem in my eyes, but I was also like ~5 the first time I watched it, but when I did watch it again I really enjoyed it for what it was, a well put together film that predates CGI and does fantastic with this element that was pretty much entirely experimental. But the lack of grit, violence, and a real sense of danger and possible defeat were missing from the second film. Because just about everything else was fantastic. Even April got so much cuter. Fantastic analysis
It was lighter and goofier but somehow still felt cool and still in-line enough with the first film, pretty much still a continuation and feeling like a big change in tone.
His name is Ernie Reyes Jr, his dad choroegraphed the fights in Surf Ninjas, he was also on Surf Ninjas and The Rundown with The Rock and Sean William Scott. Theh said he has cancer now but haven't heard about hkm in a while, also I am not sure about this but I think he might have been in a movie in mid 1980s called "The Last Dragon" About a Chinese teacher teaching Bruce Leroy a guy who is at the last of a circle of trainging and a medallion supposedly from Bruce Lee. they always missed the opportunity to use Dr Jordan as Baxter Stockman and mutate him in the Fly man in the movie, beside the prohibition to use Rocksteady and Bebop, with Tokka e Rahzar instead (they were however awesome too)... He was identical as the cartoon character design! When i was a child indeed always tought he was Baxter with a fake name. Maybe was the same problem as character like Rocksteady and Bebop.
Guys, i know. all you said. But THIS movie, was supposed to be more like the cartoon... Was made at prior in the same mood, of the cartoon. And in the cartoon, Baxter is the carbon copy of Professor Jonathan.... same dress, same papillon, same face and same hair/glasses, attire and interpretation. A missed opportunity, so. Or something like Rocksteady and Bebop, staged at prior and later changed in the script thanks the no no by Peter on some characters. Of course, just my idea.. i suppose that... I've never seen a special on the secrets of the movie itself, beside this.. So maybe all is possible, in the end.

I know it's your accent but I crack up every time I hear "Vanilla Rice." 😂
I remember seeing the trailer for the first movie and being blown away at the costume work.
@Helping Heroes Hatzidakis Yea, they had a crazy amount of detail. They don't make toys like that anymore unless it's meant for adult collectors.
This is actually my favorite one outta the whole trilogy
Me too!
Same here! When this movie came out, I was nuts for Vanilla Ice and had a crush on him. (I also had a crush on Michaelangelo, but that's just me.)
Honorable mention Michael Jai White was in this film as a Foot Soldier, if you watch the Wide screen edition you can see him briefly to the right on the scene when keno infiltrates the foot clan as they're going into the warehouse to begin training
Spawn/TMNT movie crossover could have been fun. lol
It's pronounced "Keno"....

Jim Henson thought Turtles was too violent? But yet "Dark Crystal" scared the living crap outta me back then.

The first movie was actually mainly based off of the original comics.

I had a chance to talk with Judith Hoag a few years ago at Steel City Con. She said she was complaining about the working conditions for the actors, not the violence.
And yes that women has aged like a fine wine. She's actually better looking now than in the movie.
The comment I was looking for :)
That makes sense. The second one was non violent so she would have had nothing to complain about so I always found that unlikely that she wouldn't return for that reason.
Yeah, she looks pretty good for a redhead. I usually don't like looking at redheads because they make my eyes water but she's definitely bearable.
No matter how many times I heard him say vanilla rice I found myself just wanting him to say vanilla rice one more time

I remember watching secret of the ooze far more than the first movie when I was a kid but man I can barely watch it as an adult where I still thoroughly enjoy the first one.
I just found your channel and I absolutely love it. Keep up the great work!
Shredder being called "Momma" by a giant grotesque turtle and drooling wolf is the best part of the whole movie.
i was so aggravated not to have Bebop, Rocksteady, and Krang! but they were great!

I was 9 and 10 years old when the movies came out and I loved them..
We had a great childhood our generation 👍😁👍
This one was always my favorite as a kid because it felt more like the cartoon.
I remember seeing the first movie in the theatre...there was so much excitement back then!
Yeah, I liked this one better as a kid. It was a lot more like the cartoon most kids got their first introduction to the turtles from.
I remember when my neighbors got the VHS the day it came out and I went over and watched it like 3 times !! Man, such great nostalgia.
"Karens" have been around a long time Minty.
And I still have them both
Just thinking about the fact my fiancee and I were 4 and 7 when part 1 came out and went together (we were neighbors and really good friends for that age) to now being engaged and part 2 came out 31 years ago is pretty insane

@@shockz16 I had on vhs..but i remember that scene
You have... It was never edited out of the UK version, he's wrong 👍
Same here. Maybe it was edited out of the cinema release but added for the VHS release
3rd movie was the worst movie of the franchise...until the remake 😂😅
@@eliashuapilla I never saw any of them - as soon as I saw the terrible designs and humor - It was enough for me to not waste my time. But I very much liked the TMNT 2007 movie - it was pretty cool.

Jesus. All that for TMNT?
