Minty, it's so refreshing that you can make a video about a universally panned movie, and remain so positive, fair, and friendly, all while being honest. You're a blessing to the internet.
What's refreshing about it? Especially in this day and age were people are all about virtue signalling and proclaiming everything to be amazing, underrated and a legend?
I know it’s not the best Jones movie but I still like it. My father and I watched it in the theater and we were both blown away by it. We did laugh at the funny moments (unintentional and intentional) but we still loved it. I miss you, Dad. RIP
So your liking of the movie is based on your memories of watching it with your father. Not the movie itself removed from that experience which likely skewed what may have been your reaction to it otherwise.
My dad saw "Kingdom of the Crystal Skull" as part of a double feature with "The X- Files: I Want To Believe" and came away from both movies saying, "Indiana Jones made a X-Files movie and The X-Files made an Indiana Jones movie".
I get the comparison with Crystal Skull and the X Files, that one's obvious. But how does listening to a pedophile priest while trying to save a woman from a killer (and failing) remind anyone of Indiana Jones?
They definitely wasted Harrison Ford’s prime years by not doing more. Just like they did with Star Wars and waited so long until the original trio were really old.
Loved it at the time, still enjoy it, and in 2008/9 whenever anyone I knew complained about or overanalysed it, I'd reply "the main problem with this movie, compared to the first 3, is that you're no longer 8 years old" XD Thanks Minty for another fantastically put together 10 Things video!
My favorites Indy movie. Love the setting, the fantastical nature, the action and seeing old man jones kick ass feels so much better. Also a proper villain
I was 17 when this movie came out, and it remains one of the few films I've seen in the theater TWICE. Both viewings, which occurred about three weeks apart, were packed to capacity, with lines around the building. The second of those times was with my maternal grandmother, just as she was beginning to slide into the dementia that took her from us four years later. So, I guess that's why I have an extra bit of sentiment towards it. There were a lot of funny quotes, and I remember thinking the shot of Indy in front of the mushroom cloud was so cool, even though I knew a person would never survive that in real-life. I also loved what I call the "B***h, please" moment at the end, where Shia is about to put the fedora on, as if he was taking up the mantle from his onscreen dad, and Harrison snatches it back from him almost immediately. I thought the crystal skull props were pretty, and they turned me on to this particular thread of history, as I'm sure the previous three films did for other people with their respective plot-lines. I've often felt like this movie is an example of what happens, when something becomes trendy to hate. One learns pretty quickly to either pretend to hate the person or thing at the center, or don't speak of it at all. You know that if you defend whatever's being hated on, you run the risk of some of that hate, turning on you. It's similar to the chance a kid in school takes when they try to protect a bullying victim, while so many others are egging the bully, him- or herself, on in some way. It builds and builds over time, becoming an echo chamber, and it's a cycle that keeps repeating in various forms. (6/1/2023)
Kingdom of the crystal skull is the perfect title, it fits with the Indiana jones titles, raiders of the lost ark, and the temple of doom, and the last crusade. All have the same cadence and ray them to them
@@sarcasticstartrek7719 yes but he puts all the disparate information together and shares his passion with us. So it's a lot more than you seem to think.
@@MintyComedicArts Minty! I highly recommend you watch the fan edit of INDY 4! Some very very talented fan editors re edited INDY 4 and made some changes. They got rid of that nuclear refrigerator scene AND the scene where John Hurt confuses a giant snake for A ROPE !!!! Gawd Almighty! The fan editors also brought back the classic John Williams music score from,, "' RAIDERS OF THE LOST ARK."' The classic music score changes the entire tone of the movie ! The new title of this INDY 4 FAN EDIT is.... "'RAIDERS OF THE LOST SKULL."' Highly recommended!
Thank you for making this video. You have convinced me to give Crystal Skull a good chance. I actually missed it when it was originally out. I highly appreciate your movie deep dives and secrets reveals!
Another great video. Especially appreciated the acknowledgement of Young Indiana Jones. Would love to see a video on that series. So good and underrated
I saw all the Indiana Jones movies a few years ago for the first time and I feel like with all the supernatural stuff that has happened in those films, aliens aren't that far fetch. It's a nice change of pace and fits with the 50's era. As for the Tarzan swinging scene, yeah, that was horrible lol.
This was the first Indiana Jones movie I saw on the big screen and I enjoyed the influence of the 50s B-movies and the Fridge bit was based on the original ending of Back to the Future. I loved seeing Marion back in the franchise I hope we see her back in Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny.
I didn't mind the fridge nuking scene either. It really wasn't any sillier or any more far fetched than Indy, Willie, and Short Round surviving jumping out of an airplane then falling off a very high cliff using an inflatable raft.
The most unrealistic part was that the fridge popped open at the end lol. They had to start taking the handles off those old fridges when they went to junkyards because kids would get locked in playing in them. Though I suppose if I went through a nuclear blast, I might fly off at the handle too lol. That was a terrible joke. I'll go now.
*I've loved every movie I've seen Harrison Ford in. My beloved Dad, who passed in 2013, could have been Harrison Ford's twin. It's almost like watching my Dad on the screen.*
I used to think my Dad looked a lot like Harrison Ford also... and we'd "play" Indiana Jones together where he would be Indy and I was "Short Round". Sorry for your loss. We lost my Dad in 2007.
Nice one Minty, you know why you got a good hit count so far? Timing. Right now the new Indy movie is being talked about after the screening at Cannes. It's always a simple way of getting a higher hit count, release these types of videos when a new sequel is coming out etc. People always look at the previous movies in a series when a new one is about to be released. Keep it up brother! You rock!
Fact: the school where Indy/Mutt were chased in was Yale in New Haven CT and the guy in the library was Chet Hanks (Tom Hanks son) and the lady who punch Mutt in the soda shop was Sasha Spielberg (Steven & Kate Capshaw’s daughter) Kate played Willie in Temple of Doom.
I remember seeing this movie on my 11th birthday back in 2008. This was the first time of seeing Indiana Jones in theaters. I seen the first three Indiana Jones movies on DVD and VHS
Wow we're the same age and yeah this was the first Indiana Jones movie i saw too. But i still went back and watched the original trilogy and loved it too.
@@Ace_of_Horns To be honest, I like all four movies but it’s really cool that you and I are the same age seeing Crystal Skull in theaters for the first time
@@christopherrichards2350 yeah i read your comment and was like, "huh, i was 11 in 2008 as well." Maybe you played the Lego Indiana Jones game around that time like me
@@johnnyd3158 Exactly. This is the problem with Gen Xers more so then any other demographic, they'll shit all over Indy 4 but then they'll praise the latest Marvel bilge that Disney ejects out it's rear end. I don't get it. I'd take a hundred Indy 4's before sitting through a single Marvel movie. Why? Because marvel movies all suck. Even the good ones are awful.
I hated Crystal Skull when I saw it in the theater, but a little later I started to come around to it. I remember a lot of critics saying it was the new 3rd best Indy movie, placing it ahead of Temple of Doom (don't even get me started on anyone who says ToD is a bad movie). To me it's definitely the 4th best, but I enjoy it as an Indy movie. I've never understood why people had a problem with the alien aspect. I loved the Russians as the new bad guys and I think the aliens fit with the atomic age setting. I have a feeling there will be a lot of people who jump on the Crystal Skull bandwagon after the release of Dial of Destiny. It's going to have the same effect that the new Star Wars sequels had on the prequels where people have retroactively decided that the prequels aren't all that bad after all.
But "Temple of Doom" is the WORST Indy movie by far. There's NO contest. And I always loved the Star Wars Prequels - sometimes i felt like I was the ONLY one who liked them. The sequels are absolute GARBAGE, though, especially compared to the 30+ years of the Expanded Universe novels.
Thank you very much for these videos Mark they are interesting, fun, and I learn many things I did not know about films which helps me appreciate films even more
In connection with your mention of CGI use Minty, whereas you focused on the monkey swinging scene, I was always bothered by the ants scene, because in the original 3 they always used real animals (snakes in part 1, bugs in part 2, and rats in part 3). Granted, some rats were real and some were animatronics, but still practical. When they used CGI ants, that got on my nerves. I personally feel like Spielberg and Lucas have gotten lazier as the years have passed. In their early days of filmmaking, they never would have gone the easy route. Anyway, great video as usual sir. Thank you.
Just a little side-note; here in the States, those animals are called "prairie-dogs", because gophers are a separate species. (we have both) Yes, they often get confused with other species, but they are, in fact, their own thing. (I do agree about the CGI though. Ugh.) =)
I go in circles explaining that, as well as that seals and sea lions are two different animals. Also, prairie dogs have a higher incidence of harboring plague than gophers. It’s why Arizona has one of the highest plague populations. They’re adorable little plague baring rodents though.
@@Catmom-gl5nt I hear ya. What infuriates me most though is that, even right here in Kansas, I STILL hear local schoolchildren referring to Prairie-dogs as "Meerkats"! AAAGH! (and hey; koalas are known for carrying STDs, but we still love them, and they're a vital part of the ecosystem.) =)
Thanks Minty! Your explanation of the movie in #1 is great and really quite accurate to how I feel about Crystal Skull. I am definitely seeing the next one (I have 3 films a week in my AMC plan). However, I am going with that first time roller coaster feeling in the pit of my stomach, and with the unfortunate preview belief even deeper that the ride just might suck. One can hope though, one can definitely hope...
I wouldnt pay any attention to what other people think until you watch it.myself I'll be there I wonder if their releasing a movie novel on this one.the last indy film the book was out before the film was.
Agree 100%. It wasn't what I was expecting when it came out, other than the year in which it was set, but I did enjoy watching it. George Lucas insisted on the aliens over Steven Spielberg's objections? I'd assumed the aliens were Spielberg's addition to the franchise. And I think Shia LeBeouf is a much better actor than he's been given credit for. He may have gotten his start in one of the worst sitcoms ever made, but he's also been in some truly great movies.
classy of Shia to blame himself for not selling it but he's in the clear as far as I'm concerned the cheesy stuff like the monkeys was the director's fault.
“The temple of doom” literally has the same amount of words. Maybe one more.. I’m actually excited to see this new Indy movie. I’ve always loved Indy movies/games.
I never understood peoples issues with aliens being in the film since the crystal skulls are a real life, controversial, archaeological thing. The mystical powers of the first 3 movies would seem to fit right in with the skulls mythos. For me, the movie lacks in some of its pacing. And of course, the believability on the fridge and monkey scenes. I think what really turns people off more than anything to the movie though is the way they tried to set up Shia LaBeouf as a potential successor for future movies. With a character as iconic as Indy, I just don’t think you can replace him to keep the franchise going, as much as they are going to try again with the next movie. I truly feel had they just let this be Indiana Jones out for one last adventure, maybe meeting his kid, but not necessarily having him tagalong, it may have been received much better.
I don't see it as any weirder than witch doctors removing hearts and the flesh closing back up. I think it kind of fits with the sort popularity of the ancient aliens stuff that was starting to get some traction back then. I guess clouds that look like skulls melting faces and 600 year old medieval knights hanging around tombs are more realistic?
I don't feel the movie was that bad. I was a little disappointed when it came out, but I feel it gets better with time. And I feel that the subject of the movie resonate with the time period it's representing, just like it's prequals. So in that respect I actually feel it suits the Indiana Jones series well. 👍
when The Last Crusade came out, people thought exactly the same about it that what they think about the 4th movie, the difference between the 2? Internet wasn't around when Last Crusade came out. Back then, it wasn't the popular thing to do to just take a shit on anything, mostly because the "public toilet" that is Internet wasn't invented yet.
It is a lot of fun. My wife and I had been married a year when we saw Raiders. Now when we went to see skull, we were going to see our 6 year old granddaughter.
I really like the original Indiana Jones Trilogy and I have it on my shelf. But I also like the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull. But maybe I'm weird. I like a lot of some movies that other people think are bad. And then there are the top films that many people think are good, which I don't like. In general, I watch films at my own pace and if something is hyped too much, then it just doesn't interest me, same with TV series. I like to find them myself.
When this first came out I was the only one of my friends who picked up on the fact the fridge was lead lined. I also was the only one to mention that it was funny that Indy named himself after the family dog and his son's nickname was Mutt - a term for a mixed breed dog.
Thanks for the wonderful information you give with each video. The Mysterians 1956 is a wonderful Japanese Sci Fi. Great classic movie if you look up the plot of the movie. You will find it to be very interesting for it's time. Invasion of the saucer men 1957. Is another interesting film. Not as good as the first mentioned but it was funny. Kingdom of the Crystal Skull I truly loved. It was enjoyable, it had its moment too. Which I overlook each time.i don't know if you had reviewed a movie called, Thief of Heart 1984 if not take a look at it. Thanks again for the good information.
Good work as always Minty Mark. If you ever get around to 10 things about The Rockford Files, yes, don't forget to put on a Sports Jacket, and have an answering machine and game of Solitaire on your dest, but also I'd like to suggest you put on a wavy wig resembling James Garner's hair! Lol! Kidding! From one Shavin Head Brother to another, ya look good!
Unbeliveble how many interesting and decent scripts they passed on, including "Fate of Atlantis", "Spear of Destiny", "Staff of Moses" etc-etc. We talk about 30-40 scripts that had built up over the years from various manuscript authors. Problem was that George Lucas was so obsessed about the ALIEN treassure hunt idea from Young Indy days and never seemed to realize that Indiana Jones was all about religious and culture antic treassures - Not freakin cold war X-Files....
Fate of the Atlantis is considered one of the best point and click adventure games and Indy sequels. I remember being so pissed they didn't use it as a script for the next movie. That thing was already written and on top of that it was good writing!
This may just be the christianity in me, but in the prior movies, something kept protecring Jones from certain death. Nearly every time he faced death, some obscure piece of knowledge or timely placed object would save him. Looking for the holy arc, the holy grail, or dealing with a more demonic entity cult, there was something that would always bring him back or drop in his lap to save him. Yes I know there was a small level of comedic timing to them all, but it sort of explains why and how he survived.
The spiritual element was a major pillar of what made the movies work. You can't drop that and replace it with aliens. It would be the same as taking the force out of Star Wars.
Yeah, the protector was in this case the almighty Plot Armor. The hero wins because the author said he would, not because of any intrinsic merit of the character. See Batman, he's the poster child for this trope.
Yeah, the Indy trilogy did have a lot of humility and reverence toward the mystical and the divine being the saving grace, the element that the protagonists have which saves them and antagonists lack which dooms them. The Ark, the Stones, and the Grail all. Honestly, I want to make a joke that Alien vs Predator did a more Indy-esque ending than Crystal Skull.
I live in Fresno and I remember talk of the filming here. It was a short scene at the airport. They chose Fresno because the old airport still has a very dated (40s / 50s) style building. However, it was barely recognizable because of the CGI.
I've always liked Kingdom of the Crystal Skull, it's a PG-13 movie made for kids really. I also love how Lucas first took the blame for the nuking of the fridge scene, Spielberg then took full responsibility for the scene and said Lucas just wanted to protect him, Lucas and Spielberg and true friends.
Your research is awesome and I always love watching your videos Minty. You have to do something about your sound in the "in studio" shots of you. My eardrums felt like they were being bombarded with falling, broken glass. I really want to hear what you are presenting and I appreciate what you do. Please make it so it can be appreciated to the fullest.
Can you do a video on A.I.? I absolutely love that film, and the fact that part of it was directed by Stanley Kubrik and Stephen Spielberg is awesome! It would be cool if you could show their directorial differences
This was a great movie. Don't care what anybody says. People blame aliens and nuclear blasts for ruining the "realism" of the franchise as if The Holy Grail actually giving you immortality and the Ark of the Covenenant melting your face off were peak realism.
Is that what they fucking said, "realism?!" That's fucking stupid, the movies are so unrealistic and fantastical especially The Kingdom of the Crystal Skull. I personally enjoyed the fourth entry. Is it amazing? No, is it still a fun time, regardless? Yes.
There is lots to like. I love the fridge scene! For me, I think the difference is not realism exactly but in the set-up and the execution. Throughout the first three films, the magical MacGuffin is identified and described very clearly from the beginning of the film. The films then continue with shenanigans and escaping or chasing Nazis, but we are pretty clear on what the objective is going to be. We are also broadly familiar with each chosen object of mystery, which have a mythological basis upon which to draw to suspend our disbelief. The Crystal Skulls have the disadvantage of being obvious and provable frauds - neither Mesoamerican in origin nor related to aliens. It was already fairly hokey and forced before the film was even made. Crystal Skull still begins fairly well with a set-up: we learn about the skull, and we learn from both hero and villain of its supposed psychic powers. So far, so good. But it really feels as if the creative team were not sure themselves what they wanted their film to be after that. Whilst the direction builds up the anticipation for an exploration through hidden Mayan temples, this is almost rushed through and forgotten as the script takes a dramatic turn and reveals that there is an actual alien inside and a flyer saucer - which then demolishes the site of this lost civilization. Neither location nor MacGuffin nor even the reveal are terrible per se. But I feel that they do not coalesce well together. Lack of clarity confused the story and the audience felt frustrated on first viewing. It would benefit from a single, clearer focus. If its an ancient Mayan relic, focus on the Mayan setting and the ancient civilization. Its the skull of their first high priest or a Mayan god, vital for their protection, much as with the Shankara Stones in the Temple of Doom. The villain has her mind melted in much the same way, although now the images she sees are of Mayan gods and rituals. Or... if its the skull of an extraterrestrial creature, base the main part of the film near Roswell, Area 51, or a base for the early space programme or atomic research - somewhere with a strong affinity with and aesthetic related to the 1950s era of UFOs, sci-fi, Sputnik, and the Cold War.
Igor Zhizhikin told me that Harrison Ford broke his nose during one of the fight scenes, and that he considers it a badge of honor, as he is a huge fan of the man. Also, the production gave him a lot more money when it happened...
I like Crystal Skull. I don't think its perfect, but its far from the abomination the nerds claim it is. I think the story is good & engaging up until the ancient cemetery. After that (when they are captured), I think it kinda goes downhill, but I still enjoy the rest of it. There are some impressive things in it, like the University chase scene where Indy is riding on Mutt's bike, & he is pulled off into the car, he fights them off, & goes back onto the bike from the other window, all in one shot. I do like the early mystery elements like when they go try to find John Hurt's character, & of course, the intro to Indy at the start was great. I wasn't bothered by the fridge thing or the other stuff the nerds whine about. I do think Ray Winstone's character changes sides way too many times, & his demise is basically just the same as Benny in The Mummy. Its a decent film, & while it isn't as good as the originals, it is still far better than anything that came after Aliens (particularly Ridley Scott's awful prequels). Side note, I actually liked the second X-Files movie. I found it very atmospheric & I liked the mystery plot.
Well, I seen it on a date with my ex-wife and we got the box set that my new pup chewed up the corner of the box but I LIKED IT! I was always into the "ancient alien" theory that began by the 50's and 60's from archaeological finds and hieroglyphs and Nazca Lines in Peru written about in Chariot's of the Gods by Eric Von Daniken and crap. I guess I didn't know about the controversy about CGI or purist fanboy stuff although I grew up when Raiders came out at the drive in as a kid was kinda boring and took awhile to get into. Anyway, awesome shoutout to Angry Video Nerd and SouthPark, haha!
This is going to be an underrated classic once that new movie drops trust me... I already thought Crystal Skull was pretty good but it's gonna look even better now!!!
I like this movie, and you are right, it is not a WOW, but it is fun. This movie is based on nostalgia, to try to catch that feeling of awe when we watched any of the trilogy, it does not achieve that, but it is a fun ride. At least it has more sense than other franchises, like the Fast and Furious, which had become absurd and ridiculous.
Crystal Skull doesn’t deserve all the hate it gets. It’s a fun film that manages to capture a lot of the Indy hallmarks, even if it doesn’t quite match the first three. I enjoyed it then and still like it now.
Loved all the movies. Glad to get a couple more in before it’s too late. Indiana Jones is part of the iconic ‘80s! I always stop on these movies flipping channels!
What bugged me most was in the end when Indy is trying to help Mac get out as they’re escaping and he wouldn’t stand up to leave-just lying on his stomach holding onto a rope/whip and Indy tells him to use his feet and instead just lies there saying it’s ok and the wind lifts him up like a kite and gets sucked away..he had plenty of time to just stand up and run! Personally, I would have just left him there when he fell and wouldn’t get up..
I enjoyed the whole movie. Great story telling and what a good movie should be, an escape from reality into another world. People complaining are to entitled. If you don't like what Lucas/Spielberg made, go male a movie you like and see how many people like that one. Just saying
I don’t get the hate for this movie. I LOVE the first 3 movies, I’ve probably seen them at least half a dozen times each. And I really enjoyed Crystal Skull, too. Sure, it’s silly (then only scene that kind of bothers me is the swinging with monkeys scene), and I don’t think Shia LaBeouf wasn’t the best choice, but it’s a fun watch and Harrison Ford can do no wrong in my opinion.
The forth movie was the first one I saw when I was little, since I was two when it was made and I was 3 or 4 years old the first time I saw it and I still love it to this day, although yes it doesn't have so many cool moments but the monkey scene with Mutt swinging in the trees alongside the monkeys always makes me laugh because it's so funny and cool at the same time, The Crystal Scull is my second favorite in the franchise with the either The Last Crusade or Raiders, but I do have a soft spot for the new fifth and final installment Indiana Jones and The Dial Of Destiny because it was the first, last and only time I got to experience watching an Indiana Jones movie in a movie theater
I like this filme a lot! It brings back Indy, it has great scenes, and I really liked the Crystal Skull, to the point I want to have a action figurte out of it, LOL!
I was the only person in my group of friends that liked Crystal Skull when we watched it in theaters. I loved it. It has it's issues but it's a great movie and feels like an Indiana Jones flick. I've always thought Temple of Doom was the worst movie out of the original trilogy. I feel it has way more wrong with it than Crystal Skull. That might be me because the topics and themes in Crystal Skull are things I have been into and studied myself.
We had it so good back in the 2000s and some of us didn't even know it. There was this movie and Star Wars: The Clone Wars (2008). Gen Z Lucas fans were eating good before Disney took over
Temple of Doom, had outrageous moments like pulling a heart out of a person and the person is still alive, the mine cart scene, and the jump of the mine cart. Each film had crazy moments. Swinging on vines isnt that outrageous. I still love all the movies. I heard it before, and I kind of understand it, but it was said the "The Audience has changed." IMO I liked it better than The Last Crusade, I felt that was too safe. Skull took some good risks. - Toronto, Canada.
Yeah, but some of the mine cart stuff looked really bad also, when they are stretching short round from cart to cart. It's all good action adventure fun. Let's escape. I think it was just too long of a gap also. And the run off into the sunset in Crusade sure looked like a proper end. A safe one, but proper. They should have not stopped making this films at all.
I completely agree with you about the title. Only until recently where my interest in Indy has peaked again have I finally have the title sketched in my head for long term but even now I have to take a few seconds to find the title in my head. The original three titles on the other hand come up so easily.
Still seeing Dial of Destiny, dont care what the critics say as i rather have my own opinion. Still prefer the first 3 to this one though. Fate of Atlantis will always be the real 4th Indy film (even if its a game)
Fate of Atlantis has its moments of ridiculousness that the nerds would have whined about if they used ideas from that into a film. But of course it came out in the 90's, when these cry babies were still kids.
Harrison Ford and Shia LaBeouf just didn't have the chemistry that Harrison Ford and Sean Connery had. I could buy the father-son relationship with Harrison Ford and Sean Connery but I couldn't with Harrison Ford and Shia LaBeouf.
I actually enjoyed this movie no matter what others think of it. Me and my BFF both agreed that it was a pleasure to see Indie and Maryon back together, you know, back to the roots of two wove and things like that😃however we did find a couple of flaws in the script, and boy we hate plot holes when we see them! Plot hole 1: given that Irina was Stalin's right hand woman and we are in mid-50s, how come is she still at large? No, scrap that. How come she is alive to begin with? Beria says hi from beyond the grave🙃 and Indie, howe are you going to make a business trip from the USA to East Germany where Leipzig was back then? Rewritings did the trick I guess... and plot hole 2: isn't Sean Connery, like, immortal according to the lore? And in this movie we are told that he wasalready dead.... Ooh. Oh boy.
The knight guarding the Grail said, "You have chosen wisely. But the Grail cannot pass beyond the great seal. That is the boundary, and the price of immortality." In other words, you're only immortal if you don't leave the place. A bit of a bummer really. But with a lick of paint and a couple throw cushions, you could make that cave look quite nice I suppose.
"Shouldn't there be fridges ... all over the place?" Yes. Yes, there should be. It is incredible to me that so many intelligent people thought this was anything other than the dumbest movie idea yet! "What were they thinking?" $$$
Its no more dumber than a bunch of pale white guys & their black liquid that leads to the creation of the Xenomorphs in Ridley Hack's garbage prequels.
Personally, I have never gotten the hate for this one. I think it's easily right up there with the original trilogy sure this adventure doesn't have a religious or historical element but aliens are a real life possibility and all the indy films have supernatural parts to them but fair enough if some people don't like that to each there own
Thank you for this. Both because of the fair assessment of the movie, and because of how the CGI took you out of it (I could never pin down what specifically I didn't like). I agree that it had its moments (the Ark being shown as they're driving out of the warehouse being one of them).

Loved it at the time, still enjoy it, and in 2008/9 whenever anyone I knew complained about or overanalysed it, I'd reply "the main problem with this movie, compared to the first 3, is that you're no longer 8 years old" XD
Thanks Minty for another fantastically put together 10 Things video!
Here are a couple good points. It was nice to have Marion back and the villain was cast well.
I love this movie. I was 5 when Raiders came out and it has been my favorite movie ever since. Indiana Jones is not a Trilogy, it is a serial.
My favorites Indy movie. Love the setting, the fantastical nature, the action and seeing old man jones kick ass feels so much better. Also a proper villain
My favourite part of the entire movie is Indy's reaction with the reveal of Marion.
(6/1/2023)
Junior. I’ve seen “a new hope” 8 times.
I still love this “Red-headed step child” of a film. Nice and fair treatment!
Kingdom of the crystal skull is the perfect title, it fits with the Indiana jones titles, raiders of the lost ark, and the temple of doom, and the last crusade. All have the same cadence and ray them to them
Absolutely Love your research, and explaining how the movie was constructed. All of your videos are brilliantly put together. Great Job Minty

"You're a UA-cam movie historian?"
Minty: "Part time."
Another great video. Especially appreciated the acknowledgement of Young Indiana Jones. Would love to see a video on that series. So good and underrated
I really enjoyed Kingdom of the Crystal Skull. It still feels like an Indiana Jones movie. The Older Jones was great.
You have extremely poor taste in movies. :)
She's in it. You might not like it though.
Crap
@Krazy Kajeevie IJ5........Crap.
Minty's "10 Things You Didn't Know..." videos are the the only reason I come back to youtube! Another great job!
I didn't mind the fridge nuking scene either. It really wasn't any sillier or any more far fetched than Indy, Willie, and Short Round surviving jumping out of an airplane then falling off a very high cliff using an inflatable raft.
Exactly, that's the exact example that came to mind. Or jumping the train carts. I thought absolutely nothing of it.
Then there are 2 stupid scenes
I don’t hate the crystal skull mythos - it’s just the execution was silly
Yeah, as it’s not as though there haven’t been any silly or campy moments in Raiders of the Lost Ark and The Last Crusade.
I will concede one thing however; the stunt-work is STILL impressive, and fun to watch! =)
It's embarassing that the last Indy movie he had to see before he died was such a Sh*tshow. :)
@My Retro Life my sympathies as well I list my father janurary 22nd 2011.
I'm sorry to hear that . The passing part
Get over it.
You rock!
Give it just a few more weeks and I have a feeling... that suddenly The Crystal Skull will be looked on as a masterpiece...
Right.
I’ve got a bad feeling about this.
I’ve begun rating it a lot higher after Dial of Destiny undid its happy ending and didn’t do much that excited me.
lol! you are funny

@@johnnyd3158 the series ended with last crusade.
Doom is the best IMO.
If it were the first movie released it would be viewed in a different light.
Absolutely right! Well put!
Also, aliens? Interdimensional beings in point of fact, as the film would say. LOL
Except those prequels are absolutely terrible. There were two good Star Wars movies.
Thank you very much for these videos Mark they are interesting, fun, and I learn many things I did not know about films which helps me appreciate films even more
I’ve always loved the Crystal Skull!! I think it’s underrated and ppl are overly harsh about it
that’s funny
In connection with your mention of CGI use Minty, whereas you focused on the monkey swinging scene, I was always bothered by the ants scene, because in the original 3 they always used real animals (snakes in part 1, bugs in part 2, and rats in part 3).
Granted, some rats were real and some were animatronics, but still practical.
When they used CGI ants, that got on my nerves. I personally feel like Spielberg and Lucas have gotten lazier as the years have passed.
In their early days of filmmaking, they never would have gone the easy route.
Anyway, great video as usual sir. Thank you.
Yup agreed.....it was the ants scene that got me. Other than that it's watchable
@@jimbowers1693 I appreciate the confirmation. Not only because it was CGI, but it looked so fake. I just thought it was lazy filmmaking.
I wouldnt pay any attention to what other people think until you watch it.myself I'll be there I wonder if their releasing a movie novel on this one.the last indy film the book was out before the film was.
you should avoid this movie at all costs
Another great adventure for our beloved Indiana Jones 😃
lol
The Crystal Skulls were known to be hoaxes before this movie even came out.
Also, them being from another dimension is a little original as that has been barely done over the years.
off topic here Minty, but your shelves are AWESOME! I see lots of Dr Who and Trek.
The best part of the movie for me is when Indy grabs his hat from Mutt.
That was a huge relief lol
I loved it! It all made sense at the end. Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal skull is my favorite, Indiana Jones movie!
Never heard of any of these. But they sound pretty good. I think they would have been allot better than the skulls!
@@user-gl2wh8eq1c Beaten Skulls and Dial with miles long lances!

@@shanester1832 and yet the force was ruined by midi-chlorians.
@@shanester1832 not replacing it, just saying that maybe it was also part of the reason Jones kept surviving events in the last movie.
I'm not a big fan of the third act, but the first one is truly amazing for me.
And I still think bringing the game "Indiana Jones - Fate of Atlantis" to the big screen would have been way better.
I think they were really competing for credit over its infamy, because those guys make movies for themselves.
Your research is awesome and I always love watching your videos Minty. You have to do something about your sound in the "in studio" shots of you. The new Indiana Jones film will make this film look like a masterpiece
This was a great movie. Don't care what anybody says. People blame aliens and nuclear blasts for ruining the "realism" of the franchise as if The Holy Grail actually giving you immortality and the Ark of the Covenenant melting your face off were peak realism.
Yes, i also love the movie!
Or a guy ripping out your heart and its still beating
@@curbydinobot8633 exactly lol
Is that what they fucking said, "realism?!"
That's fucking stupid, the movies are so unrealistic and fantastical especially The Kingdom of the Crystal Skull.
I literally didn’t hit the like 👍🏼 button till minty revealed his name for part 5 that’s coming out soon bwahaha nice one mate!
Igor Zhizhikin told me that Harrison Ford broke his nose during one of the fight scenes, and that he considers it a badge of honor, as he is a huge fan of the man. Also, the production gave him a lot more money when it happened...
11. Dial of Destiny may end up making Kingdom of the Crystal Skull look like a masterpiece by comparison.
The second X-Files movie was quite good. I agree with you
Very well said - very much agree ( I like the 2nd x files too )
The second X-Files was pretty decent. They went for a smaller-scale story and it worked, though the first film is still the best.

True dat ✌️
Thanks to Dial of Destiny, I love Crystal Skull more than I already did.
Can't wait for the new one
Just saying
Sean Connery saying, "What is this shit?" is a hilarious thought.
It's not a bad movie, it's just not on the same level as the original trilogy.
That might be me because the topics and themes in Crystal Skull are things I have been into and studied myself.
let's CHECK IT OUT!!! (I love that part of your intros, Minty...never drop it!)

The swinging on vines isn't the bad part. Its how they visualized it. It LOOKS terrible.
@@filmbuff2777 thats true but you have to agree its a fantastic story
Honestly i love this movie. Sure some scenes suck like the monkey scene but the movie is still good. Cant wait for Dial of Destiny
Harrison Ford and Shia LaBeouf just didn't have the chemistry that Harrison Ford and Sean Connery had. I could buy the father-son relationship with Harrison Ford and Sean Connery but I couldn't with Harrison Ford and Shia LaBeouf.
I've been watching your channel for a few years. I assume you will see the 5th and possibly Final Indiana Jones coming out in a few weeks?
Ooh. Oh boy.
The knight guarding the Grail said,
"You have chosen wisely. But the Grail cannot pass beyond the great seal. That is the boundary, and the price of immortality."
In other words, you're only immortal if you don't leave the place. A bit of a bummer really. But with a lick of paint and a couple throw cushions, you could make that cave look quite nice I suppose.
Dude! You HAVE to make a video about Indiana Jones and the Abuse of the Elderly! I highly anticipate this.
Your closing line was PRICELESS!
Personally, I have never gotten the hate for this one. I think it's easily right up there with the original trilogy sure this adventure doesn't have a religious or historical element but aliens are a real life possibility and all the indy films have supernatural parts to them but fair enough if some people don't like that to each there own
The difference is the nerds that whine about Crystal Skull were kids when the originals were released, & are blinded by nostalgia.
@Film Buff I agree sure my dad grew up with the originals and he's a big fan of crystal skull
Thank you for this. Both because of the fair assessment of the movie, and because of how the CGI took you out of it (I could never pin down what specifically I didn't like). I agree that it had its moments (the Ark being shown as they're driving out of the warehouse being one of them).
